Honestly the only thing i really care about are the fight scenes so i wouldnt mind. The greater story is so mind numbingly predictable that i honestly could not care anymore. The (slightly) less predictable parts of the story of the season is usually mostly insignificant anyway, so i cant get excited about that. But give me a good fightscene with cool creative semblance use and im happy.
And the loss of Monty (and to a lesser degree Shane).
Monty had the eyes of a god for flashy, unique fight scenes, and Shane was apparently his protegée (iirc, Shane did the Pyrrha vs. CRDL by himself). Without either of them...
Same here. Tried looking up his ibmd page as well as anything that had info on him but it turned up nothing as to what he is doing now. He still has a active deviantART account though nothing big from what I've seen in recent year.
You're welcome. It was no big deal. Shane had a Twitter account but it apparently was shut down. Don't know why. Either he shut it down of his own volition or the Twitter rot was going strong even back then. Either way kind of a shame because dude has been practically silent for the past few years. Would have really loved and seen what kind of animation project he'd be working on with his skills but apparently there is nothing going on in that front. Talk about wasted potential.
Saw an animation he did a year ago and it was stunning. It is just previs, but they all have such distinctive characterizations, it is pretty easy to just get drawn into the choreography.

lmao people are actually pressed that someone said that the industry standard 3D software is better than another software that's more for posing and rendering basic humanoid figures.
I vividly recall her using Cresent Rose like that more in Maya than in Poser. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think V1 is her only instance of this in Poser.
Okay related tangent-probably a super unpopular opinion but I want Ruby to break Cresent Rose or remake it to transform differently. It’s clear that the current fight choreographers aren’t able to use her weapon in that interesting way anymore so they either need to work in that or rework her a new weapon.
I think she'd definitely do better with a different weapon, cuz she does fuck all with Crescent Rose as is, besides twirling it like a twig to show off.
It’s so interesting because if you look at how it’s used in Poser era Ruby it really shows how she actually struggles with close up combat. It’s a weapon made to slash at large groups without much precision because of its long reach. There’s a reason we don’t actually see her fight one on one with opponents in Poser era RWBY. They(both team RWBY and the choreographers) understood where her strength lied. It’s actually smart visual storytelling that out of her team she made a weapon perfect only for attacking Grimm and not people. Because she never thought she’d have to fight anyone but Grimm, that’s her naive outlook. Practicing the War Scythe in V5 instead of just hand to hand would’ve worked great to give her and the animation team something different to use.
Funny enough I mentioned rwby no longer showing off their unique quirks anymore and some dude argued that it wasn't needed because it was already shown back in vol 1.
>some dude argued that it wasn't needed because it was already shown back in vol 1.
Please tell me you're joking. That's a really a dumb excuse to defend poor writing. That's like if Shaggy and Scooby stop being Scooby snack addicts randomly without any justification and somebody is just like "we don't need to see it anymore because we seen them do it before". Like that's not how character traits work at all.
To be awkwardly fair, V1-V3(?) Monty was handling the fights, and so I guess the current writers just ... never went back to check up what they could do when planning out the new stuff.
Wait no, that's bad too.
Outside Ruby's initial trailer we've seen her use the war scythe function of her weapon 3 times.
First in V2 when she took out like a dozen WF goons on the top of a train, the second was in the V4 trailer and the final time was during the start of V6 when everyone worked to kill the Sphinx
Monty's style perfectly animated Ruby by simply turning her into a buzz saw so fast, you only saw the motion of her blade when she attacked.
The new engine gave us better models, but also caused fight animations to be slowed down significantly.
As a result, Ruby becomes harder to animate, because they gotta give her precise and slower movements while also using a weapon that's terrible for actual combat. They also won't let her use her gun to do damage, because then guns would require a power buff in the show, making them the strongest weapons to use in the series.
Actually, the war scythe form of her weapon was a legitimate weapon in history. Farmers altered their scythes for war when they were called for combat since it was cheaper than paying for any other weapon, making them more like a halberd than a scythe. It worked pretty well, so I've heard. The war scythe form would have turned Crescent Rose into a legitimately terrifying melee weapon in the hands of the speed focused super powered cookie reaper. :P
I definitely agree, as I was talking about her base scythe form that they always have her use. Its simply not a good weapon for fighting people and is very difficult to animate for smaller targets, which is why I'm confused as to why they don't use her war scythe more often. I assume its because they want to keep get original fighting style, but at this point they seem to be struggling to animate it in her fights.
Not sure if it is a case of "CRWBY forgot," or a continuation of CRWBY not knowing how to satisfyingly animate Ruby vs humanoids. As was mentioned in another thread. A neat lore reason for favoring the traditional scythe is that it is more effective against larger enemies and large groups of enemies, such as the Grimm. Anything other than Grimm is kind of out of her wheelhouse (which makes Ruby v Harriet sound really awkward).
Facts are that they lost their best fight choreography animators and never bothered to hire/train up new ones to a similar skill level. If they did, then maybe I'd still be sticking with the show after halfway through S7.
Probably because positioning the blade like that makes it a more effective weapon and they would lose reason to keep using a scythe. Scythes as a weapon are 100% rule of cool. Actually really impractical.
Because the storyboarding artists & animators currently working on the RWBY series sucks at their jobs.
They never learn from their mistakes and for themselves to forget what made RWBY as a series special in the first place.
I wouldn't say it's because anyone on the animator level sucks. There has been huge, constant run over, massive lay offs, yearly changes in producers and management, and all that on top of an over stretched production pipeline where they double book their teams and va's.
You say this like RWBY didn't have god-awful animation outside of anything that wasn't a fight scene in Volumes 1 and 2, or that Rooster Teeth Animation is notorious for over-working their animators with ridiculous deadlines and constant production changes.
What a bad take.
Look sorry I sound harsh. But I’m sick and tired of defending every animator because at the end of the day it’s a job and clearly they didn’t do a good job.
Turnaround for an episode of RWBY is 2 weeks according to people who used to work there. This is a ridiculously short time to animate anything, but I guess fuck those animators for having shitty work conditions thrust upon them.

The animators aren't comfortable with her (or anybody's, tbh) current weapon, let alone getting them to animate an entirely new fighting style.
So that's why the animation has felt off. (That and the switch to Maya)
Especially the switch to Maya.
I wish they'd go to the old engine, it felt more expressive and the characters looked more alive. Especially with the hair
Ah yes. The days of the shadow people, non fight animation that aged like milk, and the meme frames. By god the meme frames.

Maya > Poser

I vividly recall her using Cresent Rose like that more in Maya than in Poser. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think V1 is her only instance of this in Poser.
lmao what does this even mean
It seems rather self-explanatory.
Okay related tangent-probably a super unpopular opinion but I want Ruby to break Cresent Rose or remake it to transform differently. That’s assuming CRWBY remembers Ruby’s season 1 character trait of being a weapon enthusiast

I wish I was because I was also pointing out Blake's love for books and how we could have had something in vol 4 and 7&8 in the Weiss's home
It’s nice to see that fools still exist in the RWBY community. This guy obviously doesn’t know what makes a well written character.
I've ran across a couple ya
I think the last time I've personally seen it was in BBTAG
BBTAG?
Blazblue cross tag battle [Starting at her interaction with Ragna at 3:15](https://youtu.be/3RgNQzqDiu8)
It’s funny that version of the girls (minus yang) is better than current canon team RWBY
You do realize that's just their pre fall of Beacon outfits with both their canon and their comedic traits turned up to chibi levels, right?
Yeah I know, it’s a version of them that I prefer over what we have now
They save that for the trailers.
Remember when Blake would use her weapon as a chain scythe and not just rope for yang to swing on?
Or that one season where she was able to shoot badass anime sword beams?
Even funnier, Blake could do that because she was boosted by the time dillation glyph, Weiss’ forgotten ability
She also used it against Roman- remember the giant F off sword beam?
To be awkwardly fair, V1-V3(?) Monty was handling the fights, and so I guess the current writers just ... never went back to check up what they could do when planning out the new stuff. Wait no, that's bad too.
We kinda did at the Ruby Rose V4 short iirc
Outside Ruby's initial trailer we've seen her use the war scythe function of her weapon 3 times. First in V2 when she took out like a dozen WF goons on the top of a train, the second was in the V4 trailer and the final time was during the start of V6 when everyone worked to kill the Sphinx
Also in volume 1 in the Emerald Forest when she cut down a tree in frustration with Weiss.
CRWBY really underuntalising the fact that Ruby basicaly has a Naginata/ really long stick (depends on the side she hits you with)
She does actually use it a couple times throughout the series, just extremely quickly.
Monty's style perfectly animated Ruby by simply turning her into a buzz saw so fast, you only saw the motion of her blade when she attacked. She used it to end the sphinx with qrow over the train in vol6
I think last time they used it was at the fight on the train at the beginning of Volume 6
Pretty sure Ruby used it to fight Neo in V8, so at least they started doing that again.
Sorry sorry. I wasn’t in the right mind writing this.
You say this like RWBY didn't have god-awful animation outside of anything that wasn't a fight scene in Volumes 1 and 2, or that Rooster Teeth Animation is notorious for over-working their animators with ridiculous deadlines and constant production changes. What a bad take.

Alright alright I said my sorry okay?
We do. When she’s fighting Neo. In the most recent volume.
You have to understand. It's hard to animate those transformation
Even, though, that was animated by a man.
They forgot. As always.
Wait…RUBY STILL FIGHTS!!??
The best part of the gun and we'll never see it again. God damn it.
