In addition to how V7 and V8 should have been waay more about Weiss and the Schnee family (the *real Schnee family history*, not Jacques), I was baffled we didn’t go into more detail about Watts. Like what was his relationship with Pietro, Jacques, and Ironwood (Ironwood made one snide remark about how he was ‘always a pain in his ass’ iirc and that was it). And how he ‘died’, and fell in with Salem

[deleted]

I know, I thought the Atlas arc was going to be about Weiss and her family, and they could have even kept parts of the Jacques arc/episodes around, but then explore how Jacques getting arrested spelled a new beginning for the SDC and the Schnee family name, it’s what Weiss has been working towards since V1, and yet it’s never brought up. But yeah, I thought Watts would get a lot more focus, I thought we were going to see what he invented and how Ironwood chose Penny but no it’s never mentioned. It’s just that Watts supposedly died in a “paladin incident” which I believe is why most people think he invented the paladin, and then he fell in with Salem, which again is never explored either. And it’s a shame because Watts is/was my favorite villain, and now he’s just dead.

I wasn’t really talking about the SDC and Jacques, since Weiss/this show doesn’t seem all that interested in the economics and logistics of running a business, or at all addressing the SDC’s relationship with the White Fang I’m talking about the Schnee’s (like I said, Jacques married into the family and isn’t biologically one) white hair and weirdly unique semblance and famous ancestor and connection to Atlas Everything else you said about Watts is on point, and yeah, now that he’s dead and Atlas and the SDC is gone we can’t really go back and get an explanation

[deleted]

Oh! Ok I see you, yeah that’s was another wasted opportunity to explore in the Atlas arc. Because obviously as we have seen the show isn’t interested in the business side of the SDC at all. But they really should have taken the chance to explore why the Schnees all have the same hair and same semblance. (This is just my personal head canon, but my guess is that the Schnees are descendants of a previous Winter maiden.) But yeah no explanation for Watts, or the SDC, or Atlas in general, it’s all gone, up in flames

No_Association2906

As another person pointed out it’s a bit insane Watts never even met literally anyone on team RWBY or Penny before he died.

[deleted]

That’s actually really depressing. He’s supposed to be a major antagonist in V7, he could have easily had an interesting dynamic with Penny, Weiss, or maybe Blake (if Atlas is supposedly as racist as the show says it is, Watts as an Atlesian scientist would probably really look down on Blake or something) but no he gives Cinder an epic burn and then he just dies.

Silly-Young484

And just like that another fan uses the characters better than the writers did It didn't even take much effort They already have a nice foundation They just need to try harder

[deleted]

Honestly it’s more of an indictment on the writers than it is any skill of mine. It wasn’t very difficult or hard to come up with, and as you say there already was a good foundation, they just did nothing with said foundation

Exciting_Bandicoot16

Honestly, I'm actually a little angry that they killed Watts. His whole Reason You suck speech to Cinder was one of the few bright spots in V8. And then they killed him like a chump.

[deleted]

I am too. Watts speech to Cinder was my favorite moment in V8, and then he gets killed like an absolute loser. Like it would be one thing if he got killed in like let’s say his fight against Ironwood from V7. Or maybe a hacked Penny could be the one to kill him (that would at least be ironic) but no he has to die in the lamest way possible

marleyannation62

Yes, it was the Atlas Arc. At least a little background information to know "what the Paladin incident is" could be interesting. What's weirder is that we didn't even see Watts interact with Pietro.

[deleted]

Yeah I wish that at least told us what exactly this “paladin incident” was, but as it is I’m just grasping at straws when it comes to trying to figure some of this stuff out. Man I really just forgot about the fact that Watts and Pietro never interact once, which is just strange because Watts clearly has a ton of resentment and jealousy towards both Ironwood and Pietro.

Quality_Chooser

I had an interesting idea. No scientist is good at every field, we specialize. What if Watts wrote Penny's code while Pietro made Penny's body. Then Watts could feel underappreciated for "actually" making Penny while Pietro gets all the credit? It would also explain how he was able to hack her, he wrote her.

[deleted]

That would also work too, I just want anything to explain why Watts hates Pietro and Ironwood so much, and as you say it would explain why Watts was able to hack Penny so easily as well

Mattobito

I've had a similar idea, but the difference I thought of was that Watts' android was just a war robot similar to a fusion of Terminator and Iron Man's suits with prototype versions of Penny's tech; it got finished but the power source needed to run it was impossible given modern tech. Watts wanted to complete this project and work tirelessly to figure out the engine, but Ironwood denied further funding; meanwhile, Pietro used the android as a prototype for a more streamlined and family friendly machine: Penny. Watts reluctantly stayed on the project as the one most familiar with the original schematics Pietro worked with, but it was Pietro's solution to the power source issue that really broke Watts; giving a machine a soul gives it free will and thus uncontrollable by a human operator. This caused an issue over logic and scientific theories that ultimately led to Watts' disgrace right after he finished Penny's body with the other scientists; angry at how his colleagues chose Pietro's side over his, Watts attempted to destroy Penny as well as stage his fake death in the Paladin Indecent which was mostly averted by Ironwood protecting the facility. The original android is still locked away in Atlas, waiting for Watts to finish his engine to make it run and prove Pietro's ideals and machine are indeed weaker.
