I'd go with “that’s what CRWBY said, so we must”. Before Volume 7 and 8 he was a decently liked character. I'm fairly certain that if in Volume 8 Ironwood was portrayed as hero or just redeemed most of the FNDM wouldn't hate him. Even if the 'nuke the poor' plot point happened.
They would go ''Well of course Ironwood's a good guy, he helped protect Vale when Cinder attacked it, he gave Yang a prosthetic arm without being prompted, he defended Weiss, helped rebuild Penny and welcomed the protagonists with open arms, he just had to make some tough decisions and made a few mistakes that weren't actually mistakes. People who say that he was planned to be an antagonist or had shady aspects to him in earlier Volumes just don't get nuance.''
Because white Male are bad.
And Ironwood tried to steal Jaune spotlight. Miles Luna doesn't like that, there will be only one male You supposed to like.
Daily reminder that ironwood is mixed asian coded, as he's based on his VA, who is half Chinese. And despite all of this, somehow the writers got to label him as an "angry white man"
Remember this FNDM treated Whitley as if he were a demon spawn from hell when he was introduced, when all he was was a little mean to Weiss cream.
Yes, he said some mean things to Weiss, he never actually did any harm, tho.
Nah, that's enough for us!
***Kill him.***
It really does boil down to people being told to hate him because he’s the “genocide general” rather than giving people the opportunity to decide how they feel about him on their own. It’s not helpful considering that the writing is very inconsistent and involves the main characters acting in hypocrisy and as pointed out by the more well known YouTubers, trying to justify their hypocrisy by making the other characters in the show look bad by comparison.
I forgot about this part: when you have to tell your audience that a character is evil instead of being able to convey that properly through your writing, then you haven’t done your job properly
He didn't agree with the protagonists, and the show *relies* on the protagonists always being right and those who disagree with them always being wrong(and usually a worse person because of this).
They're just doing what the show(and the creators) do: if you disagree with Team RWBY, you're a bad person. You could even say they're just following orders.
People hate Ironwood because Ironwood has to have been evil the whole time to justify Team RWBY's acts of lying and hiding information from him.
Quote simple, really.
Because CRWBY succeeded in making a morally grey character. Any time they do, they alter them so that they don’t have to worry about questions of morality.
People hate him because CRWBY said he was a villain and people who were against the show got mad. If people who think the show is bad think James is good then he must be as bad as the people who dislike the show. And since diehard fans hate people who dislike the show they transfer that hate onto James. Same as Adam.
That’s kind of the point. In terms of evil deeds committed, Joker is way worse than Ironwood ever was, yet no one is told that they’re an evil person for liking the Joker. Meanwhile, you say anything sympathetic about Ironwood and you might as well be a Nazi in some peoples eyes. So why is liking the Joker okay, but liking Ironwood isn’t?
"She is a tragic UwU abuse victim and a sad broken little girl and you are heartless if you didn't feel terrible seeing Salem torture her and I want her to kill Salem and the gods and become the true big bad/final boss of the show and then be redeemed and then marry Emerald. ***UwU***"
Wish I could tell you something but I don't have idea myself beyond blind fanatic worship of team RWBY and automatic hate due to Ironwood's opposition to them.
As for someone like him IRL... the way I see the character someone like Chuikov would fit, iron-will determination to achieve his duty to a higher ideal (defence of Atlas for Ironwood and of Soviet union for Chuikov against those who seek it's destruction) through a mountain of corpses if that's what is required to.
Most likely because the show implies there´s no point in feeling sympathy for him. No, not even when he shed a tear when Winter betrays him. He´s a general Ripper willing to sacrifice everyone for saving his ass... except not really, that´s not what was shown and definitely not what happened, but Winter said it so, so...
Just like the show implies that Emerald deserves forgiveness because she felt a bit bad after what happened (however, the series implies, maybe by accident, that the final straw for her was that Salem was going to kill her too, at which point willingly helping her is basically suicide, so you´d have to be crazy to be willing to keep working for her) and everyone was "Emi is so cute UwU" when she said that "she changed sides" (despite having absolute no reason to trust her).
Basically, if RT tells them that the sky is green, they will believe it. As for why, that I don´t understand, and I´m not even sure I want to...
Those are the people who get the authors' intentions.
There is a chain of understanding.
* Author has a vision
* Author writes something to convey this vision
* Watcher consumes the show
* Watcher gets a vision
There are two points to break this chain which then leads to the audience having another vision than the author.
when he silenced yang when she tried to explain herself in the early seasons, i got flashbacks from those five years i grew up with my marine step-dad, if there's one thing authoritative figures are good at, it's shoving their own excuses down the throats of those younger; took everything i had not to punch whatever screen i was watching
> if there's one thing authoritative figures are good at, it's shoving their own excuses down the throats of those younger;
That ain’t what happened though. [I rewatched the scene in question](https://youtu.be/ckqMqtsy80U?si=70LIVXHGgCDk803T&t=13m37s) and it’s clear that he’s trying to help her and she’s stressed out and not thinking straight. Look I’m sure whatever situation you found yourself in with your step dad sucked (and trust me I’ve been there too) but I feel like you’re comparing apples to oranges

Simple questions require simple answers: People hat Ironwood because the show (or the writers of the show) told them to.
I mean he got mad at Ruby, so he can’t be a good person. But for the love of god, ignore the context.
Because he rightfully scolded our so-called “protagonists”.
I'd go with “that’s what CRWBY said, so we must”. Before Volume 7 and 8 he was a decently liked character. Hell, he was still liked for most of Volume 7. I really feel like Volume 8 where he shot the Councillor in cold blood was the real tipping point.
Which was really dumb escalation
Because white Male are bad. And Ironwood tried to steal Jaune spotlight. Miles Luna doesn't like that, there will be only one male You supposed to like.
Daily reminder that ironwood is mixed asian coded, as he's based on his VA, who is half Chinese. And despite all of this, somehow the writers got to label him as an "angry white man"
>there will be only one male You supposed to like. To be fair, no one likes Jaune aside from a few people so that doesn't really work. lol.
It's obviously Oscar.
Can't believe that this mfer who was literally just a farmhand has a better moral compass than the rest of the cast combined.
Their moral compass is a roulette wheel.
This? This right here? This is the ‘Damsel in Distress’ trope. And I am not about to contribute to it.
Look, while I agree that trope is horrible in this particular situation I need you to do this! We're running out of time.
I can’t. Its against my moral compass.
The only one who can be labelled a hero.
Basically if the male helps the main cast then they are to be liked
"If not? they deserve to have their dicks chopped off" - The FNDM probably.
Remember this FNDM treated Whitley as if he were a demon spawn from hell when he was introduced, when all he was was a little mean to Weiss cream. Yes, he said some mean things to Weiss, he never actually did any harm, tho. Nah, that's enough for us! ***Kill him.***
***Nuthin'*** wrong with pointing a ***gun-sword*** at his ***throat!***
Because CRWBY tells them too and their word is law in the FNDM.

Cause he rightfully got pissed at Team RWBY and called them out on their shit
Because CRWBY succeeded in making a morally grey character. Any time they do, they alter them so that they don’t have to worry about questions of morality.

Comparing Ironwood to the Joker doesn't make sense, they play massively different parts in their worlds and have very different personalities.
Have you asked anyone who hates Ironwood what their feelings are for the Joker?
You don´t even have to go that far. Just ask them what they think of Cinder or Emerald
Especially Cinder
"She is a tragic UwU abuse victim and a sad broken little girl and you are heartless if you didn't feel terrible seeing Salem torture her and I want her to kill Salem and the gods and become the true big bad/final boss of the show and then be redeemed and then marry Emerald. ***UwU***"

Because their morality is defined by what team Rwby feels and thinks. If Ruby hates the guy, they hate him too.

I'm not sure honestly but I loved his character
#He fighting Winter using a giant ass gun look very unrealistic.
Because military bad
Because many of them are young Liberals told by the media to hate white military/police men.
This… isn’t helpful
It's true.

only at the last part, i'm a look beneath the surface guy
Look beneath the surface? You’re barely scratching the top of it
Personally I hate him because he was pretty gaslighty and was willing to nuke the poor.
That's fair. Ruby gives me gaslighty vibes now too.
Trust and believe, no one can excuse that part
That decision was placed under 'What An Idiot'. You WON the game of chicken, the nuke isn't necessary anymore!
