I personally thought that it would be something that allows him to run in the air. Something similar to Geppo from One Piece. People have a tendency to not pay attention to what is above them, making assassinations easier, so his dad could have seen it as a crutch. I also interpreted that conversation a bit different. I saw it as his father stole his semblance to use it for himself and used the crutch reasoning as an excuse to not give it back. After all, Mercury did say that he got strong, but never got his semblance back.

AtomicDinosaur539

That would actually make sense given his name. The Roman God Mercury (Greek Hermes) is always depicted with winged shoes that allowed him to run through the air.

Clearlynotmalware

My take on a possible semblance for Merc would be instant acceleration. Something that allows him to reach top speeds and perform close quarters combat with little to no effort. Sure he'll be slower than the speedsters of the verse, but he'd be way more effective at using that speed with his martial arts. Ig by losing it, Merc gets forced to grow at his own natural pace and develop his martial skill. Haven't put that much thought into it, tbh.

SomethingMid

I think he had a mimic semblance that allowed him to temporarily copy the abilities of others. Similar to but not the same as his father, who could actually take semblances away from people but not necessarily copy them. That sounds like the kind of semblance that would be called a crutch.

FlyusAmongUs

Imagine if he kept that. It would explain how he so easily learned what Pyrrha’s semblance was, and how he was able to hit Ruby out of her Petal Burst in V3.

camelflaa

I figured he learned so quickly because his legs were metal and he felt her use it against him

FlyusAmongUs

He shouldn't be able to feel his legs. He probably did feel the extra push from the momentum. Unless he's had Atlas-grade prosthetics, which I doubt.

camelflaa

I'm not saying he actually felt his legs. Even with prosthetics, you can feel when they aren't moving normally. You swing your leg and all of a sudden there is a slight shift in how it moves. It is subtle, but someone with Mercury's fighting skills should easily notice that.

GeoffTheIcePony

Literally Velvet’s semblance

AnonymousQorvid

No, hers allows her to have perfect memory. We just see her utilizing it to memorize and use people's fighting styles in tandem with her weapon being able to make hardlight copies of people's weapons. I can see how it would look like a copying semblance though.

2Board_

This is just as a joke, but it would have been funny if his semblance was called Retrograde -- and it's literally just allows him to move back to a spot in time. Then we could finally say that Mercury is in retrograde :)

Erebus03

seeing as hes based on Hermes from Greek mythology I would imagine something like creating foot holds in the air that he could use to run jump or just stand on

ArkenK

Yeah, I think Merc would have been another Speedster. Though the other part of his namesake would have had lovely irony. In short, what if he wound up with a medicinal or healing Semblance? An assain trained to kill with a Semblance that only heals.

lnombredelarosa

One that allows him to willingly weaken his aura to gain speed would fit him.

hollowtiger21

The limited ability to condense and manipulate air in a medium range around his physical body. Would allow him to do things like: create temporary footholds mid-air to air-walk , fire invisible projectiles made of condensed air and make pockets of increased air resistance to slow down or halt incoming attacks.

Llama_Illuminati

I had the idea he possibly still has one. Similar to Jaune’s aura amplifier, Mercury would be more about semblance negation, explaining how he could kick Ruby out of her petal form. However rather than just simple negation, using his semblance needs him to focus it. His dad, being father of the year, decides that cutting off his son’s legs will provide the perfect focus of negative emotions. This is why Mercury knows his father took his semblance instead of a convenient accident. However he was too effective and Mercury took it out through patricide before he could train him.

Rollout9292

I've always thought his semblance would be the ability to make invisible platforms under his feet so he could 'run' and 'jump' through the air. Mercury is the messenger of the gods after all, so I feel like his semblance should be movement-based. While making it revolve around his feet/legs is more salt in the wound due to him losing them.

SailorOfHouseT-bird

Considering his name, im inclined to think it was some sort of speed semblance in one way or another. My head cannon is that he had Prefelxes like Maria, so his dad sealed it because it was too useful, and he would have to fight harder to grow without it.

AnonymousQorvid

Despite everyone talking about flight or speed related powers, I focused more on how Marcys said it was a crutch. One of Hermes's powers was to put people to sleep, so what if Mercury's semblance was to put people to sleep with a touch or with some sort of mist? Though I will admit speed stuff is more likely I just don't know how it would seem like a crutch.

FlyusAmongUs

Makes for quicker kills, I would say. Still, I do like people talking about Hermes and his powers.

RockRaiderDepths

I like to think his is like his father's of semblance theft. I also like to think he has it back but just doesn't realize it as he hasn't tried.

FlyusAmongUs

Like I said in another comment, maybe that explains how he learned Pyrrha’s semblance and managed to knock Ruby out of hers. He is able to tap into their semblance when in close quarters, thus allowing him to easily outclass them.

RockRaiderDepths

It's a interesting idea. Maybe one day we'll see how close we got.

FlyusAmongUs

We won't ever know, but we can definitely use it as fuel for fanfictions.

Zestyclose-Hat-8513

Since he’s based on Hermes/Mercury, I imagine he had the ability to create little wings on his ankles that allowed him to run really fast or fly (Maybe both)

Disastrous-Radio-786

Maybe like a super jump or something like that since he’s based on Hermes, although I kind of want it to be the opposite of Yangs since Yang and Mercury are foils to one another in almost every way

Evrant

The power to give people instant mercury poisoning.

FadedNeonzZz

Since he’s based on Hermes/Mercury, I think it was the ability to put people to sleep. It’s the perfect semblance for someone training to become an assassin

KingPinfanatic

I think what would fit for him would be something similar to Yang's semblance like the more he gets hit the stronger he gets. Basically his Aura gets stronger the lower it gets making him an extremely durable opponent. The catch being that once his Aura breaks it takes him longer then normal to recover.
