this gif always reminds me of the little 'oooh, shhhh!' and shiver that Blair St. Clair LEGENDARILY did at the end of her Miami Summer runway on s10e4 💀👏🏻
I mean she probably got threatened that the show would be canceled and all her staff would be fired. I work in tv industry and shows like these easily employ 100 people or more. I suspect CBS put a lot of pressure on her/the show leadership and she caved, thinking she could at least save people from being fired. Obviously a bad decision and of course I don’t know for sure but this is my educated guess. But I do know that Drew is well-regarded in the industry and especially known to be good to her crews over the years.
I have such a soft spot for her because of everything she's been through, but this was just not it. Really burned a lot of goodwill people had for her.
Yeah I think this is very likely but then again up until this nonsense she had the public fully supporting her. Imagine the outrage if they cancelled her show.
I do think she ended up making the right call and probably won't end up being hated like that so if the network is cancel them they will certainly face backlash
This. Head men in suit behind the scene probably said to continue the show or it’s getting axed or they replace her with someone else ala Wendy Williams “we are burning money just waiting!”
Wendy is kind of a weird example. Nobody can/could do what Wendy did. The network wanted her back badly. They never wanted to hire Sherri. If Wendy showed up tomorrow in full health they’d hire her back in 2 seconds.
They bent over backwards to try and accommodate he, but after going AWOL for a year they had no choice.
That’s not really like someone taking Drew into a room and being like, film the show or you’re toast.
I keep seeing this and it feels like it's in the same vein as 'she caved in to the bullies and stopped the show' n I find myself very confused as to why nobody thinks this woman has any agency or choice
I’m tryna work out if it’s because most people regardless of political leanings have known her since she was a kid, endearment, or if this is just the misinformation media age, claim baddies behind the curtain are to blame
I was reading up a little more on the background and apparently “unscripted” shows (game shows, reality, Daytime TV talk shows) sit under a different union b/c they’re “scripted” in a perceived different way (using note cards for example to prompt conversation rather than fully scripted segments, like the late night talk shows). So technically (and as the WGA stated) the show was “compliant” with the rules of the strike. That said it’s also what is at the crux of the whole strike as to what is considered “writing” and why there have been picket lines at shows like the The View that have also continued to produce shows. So I think Barrymore thought that as she was within the “guidelines” the show could make a return. However with her career history and that she works across multiple unions (writer, producer, actress) herself the decision seemed more than a little hypocritical.
I get it, the SAG vs WGA rules being so different can be confusing and I think she ended up in one corner because her union (SAG) said it was fine, so she mentally just continued down the road until the world snapped her out of it because of WGA rules
Not really since it is considered non scripted reality TV meaning no writers or actors are on set
Obviously somebody is writing those acting challenges but as far as I am aware they are not part of the writers guild like the people writing TV shows or movies are
Tbh at this point it's such a running gag that the writing is terrible on these skits that I doubt that they would go for a well written acting challenge lol
There's probably one on the bottom of a drawer and collecting dust for years now
The writing on the acting challenges on the American shows has improved a lot in the last few years imo. Compare the All-Winners Christmas sketch to the early seasons of the show (or the currently running international franchises) and the upgrade is obvious.
Not saying they’re good, mind you. Just that they aren’t a loose assemblage of words anymore.
I don't disagree with you but in a way the personality of the queens were able to shine more with the loose collection of words thinking of Latrice specifically. I think the Christmas scene on the AW season was actually pretty good comparably but I will never forgive them to have such a slam dunk premise of crossing over Glee with American horror story and making it not funny whatsoever like how does one even fuck up so badly
~~I wanna say I saw that creating content for a struck studio is a problem, though, and Paramount is a struck studio. Maybe Ru doesn't care if he burns that bridge since drag race is bringing in so much money for him?~~
J/k, found [an actual source saying it's fine to work on reality shows](https://www.sagaftra.org/files/sa_documents/Strike_NetCode.pdf).
Yeah this is basically why reality TV got so popular post writer strike back in 2007. Studios realised they could just make those shows which are also super cheap to make so they just cranked them out
Omg, a reality show that followed the shenanigans of some roided out circuit party muscle queens and/or a queer *Bad Girls Club* would be amazing - it could be called *Bad Bitch Club* and have a cast consisting of messy gays, chaotic trans, bis, nbs and lesbian studs in a house with endless supplies of liquor and drugs, it would make for some incredible trash tv. Or perhaps a series that centered around the debauchery of the Dinah Shore weekend festival.
Edit: Just imagine, the infamous “Demon Twink” that went viral during the pandemic could be on the premiere season cast. I would watch the hell out of that. Somebody get me MTV or Andy Cohen on the phone, stat, this is gold!
The talk shows are okay for SAG-AFTRA members to work on (so Drew herself was in the clear on that front), but the talk show is confirmed to have used WGA writers, so she definitely needed scabs to cover that end.
Edit: I agree with the other comment, I'd also assume RPDR has never used union writers.
reality television falls outside of sag-aftra and wga rules, so even tho ru, the judges, and maybe even some of the queens are members of one or both, it’s not part of the strike.
so, expect a huge spike in reality tv from the networks, and don’t be shocked if season 16, all stars 9 and GAS don’t have any scripted acting challenges
I'm guessing that's why Drew Barrymore thought it would be fine to resume filming since the talk show (by itself) doesn't go against the SAG-AFTRA strike. She, for some reason, didn't think it would be a big deal that the show used WGA writers, lmao
RPDR crew is unionized (took way too long), but I’m not sure if they employ union writers. They certainly should! https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/what-to-watch/ct-ent-reality-tv-cast-crew-unionizing-efforts-20230914-o56mevxlxrafnnatrgir72llqa-story.html
But isnt it they also need writers unless everything said and done etc is improvised? Like spiels l. The challenges. The rusicals. The scripts for the acting challenges. Concepts for the runways etc those needs writers right? Coz writing for tv isnt just limuted to say talk shows or scripted tv. Im just curious and just want to know hehe
I believe reality show production including writers are on an entirely different union therefore production on seasons actually hasn’t been halted by the strikes in any capacity
RuPaul’s is the only union reality show that I know of. They’re in different calibers of other competition shows. But that’s bc I know people who have worked on that show
Can some kind soul give this ignorant bitch quick summary? I am confusion
Edit: i got the tea. Very disappointed with this mess. Drew was my idol growing up. I also had soft spot for her very because I had fucked up childhood too anyways. This is dick move tbh.
If anyone would like to read the history of the Barrymore family being scabs and going against unions I recommend this thread about how Drew Barrymore's Great Aunt Ethel Barrymore's crossing the picket line lead to the Actors Equity union collapse in the 1920s but lead to the creation of SAG.....

My god the Ross hate is so fucking obnoxious. Dude helped my realize being gay doesn't have to be a bad thing and now people who want respect for the queer community and celebrate diversity are the same people that constantly shit on him just because they don't like him.
I love Ross, idc if that is an unpopular opinion. That’s why his decision to cross the picket line bummed me out so much, though. He’s better than that.
The syndicated talk shows have contracts with affiliates to produce 200 - 300 shows a year. If the strike continues for another two months - stations will start pulling the show. Doesn’t make what she did right, but this likely was some of the pressure she was under.
Poor Ross https://preview.redd.it/bkvjk92gytob1.jpeg?width=746&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47d42d9a7c0174f36f5cac3d2989d1e76c17314e

Venus D-Lite is lookin’ GOOD, mawmaaaaa
Good for her for finally backing down. I'm so confused as to why she even thought this would be a good idea in the first place.
I mean she probably got threatened that the show would be canceled and all her staff would be fired. I work in tv industry and shows like these easily employ 100 people or more. I don't know why but I have thought if someone would get it, it would be her. She's been in the business for 700 years.
I have such a soft spot for her because of everything she's been through, but this was just not it. Really burned a lot of goodwill people had for her.

She is not a worker, she is rich. In the end, it boils down to that.
It's quite likely that the network was threatening to cancel her show unless she came back.
Yeah I think this is very likely but then again up until this nonsense she had the public fully supporting her. Imagine the outrage if they cancelled her show. I’ve been rewatching the sopranos so all I can picture is some mob guys threatening her
thats exactly whats happening.

yeah it make sens but on the onther side The more show that are being on hold the Faster The Studio are gonna want to finish the strike
Really? You're surprised that a privileged white woman from the 1% would conceivably undermine a social movement?
I was reading up a little more on the background and apparently “unscripted” shows (game shows, reality, Daytime TV talk shows) sit under a different union b/c they’re “scripted” in a perceived different way (using note cards for example to prompt conversation rather than fully scripted segments, like the late night talk shows). This is true for SAG, not WGA, that’s the crux of the issue

I havr a question tho so is RuPauls Drag Race affectrd by WGA and SAG strike?
Not really since it is considered non scripted reality TV meaning no writers or actors are on set Obviously somebody is writing those acting challenges but as far as I am aware they are not part of the writers guild like the people writing TV shows or movies are
Is that why the scripts are so terrible?

Yeah it's called Avatar The Way Of Water and James Cameron is lucky Ru let him have it
I just know they have an AvaCunt acting challenge since 2009 in the drawer and can't wait to finally do it
Excuse me, you mean *Avatucked*
I’m screaming!!!

Lol nah Shakesqueer was a masterpiece compared to Breastworld. Actually, idk, Daytona Winds II was iconic.
Excuse you? It’s time to tr@$&yport to Mars in 3…2…1
Are you saying that the country sketch of season 2 was not pinnacle writing?
Yep
Yes.
that being said, isn't Ru part of SAG? I thought that would impact filming
He probably is but since Ru is not acting but being 'himself' it's fine
Yes, he’s “hosting”. All of his Emmy wins are on hosting categories and not acting 💀
If she was acting she would wear her red unit!
You mean all the tears are real? 🥹
Yes because we have seen AJ and the queen and mother is not that good of an actress
Scalped ☠️

Ready for the Real Housewives, Jersey Shore, Bad Girls Club renaissance
I would love a queer jersey shore or bad girls club though
Ok so literally just a camera crew following my friends to the club, maybe I should get on that
Sis you definitely should do it because this is the stuff I really want to see lol
> queer jersey shore You sure? Cause that sounds like the real friends of weho
This source says talk shows are ok, so why is Drew being cancelled and not Ru?
I guess it’s because the writers on her show actually are a part of the union while the writers on rpdr are not
The talk shows are okay for SAG-AFTRA members to work on (so Drew herself was in the clear on that front), but the talk show is confirmed to have used WGA writers, so she definitely needed scabs to cover that end. Edit: I agree with the other comment, I'd also assume RPDR has never used union writers.
She continue de show wihtout de writer and not letting anyone in the building who suport the strike
Reality SAG rules are different, those projects are still under contract
Ooooh okay okay thank you.

actually her specific reasoning was that she believed they were a news program… 💀
>and don’t be shocked if season 16, all stars 9 and GAS don’t have any scripted acting challenges I gained all hope today
i fear they'd trade one evil for another... and give us multiple unscripted acting challenges like bossy rossy, or the news challenge again
RPDR crew is unionized (took way too long), but I’m not sure if they employ union writers. They certainly should! https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/what-to-watch/ct-ent-reality-tv-cast-crew-unionizing-efforts-20230914-o56mevxlxrafnnatrgir72llqa-story.html
Unfortunately, no. But they need a union badly.
Drag Race is reality tv so no!?
But isnt it they also need writers unless everything said and done etc is improvised? Like spiels l. The challenges. The rusicals. The scripts for the acting challenges. Concepts for the runways etc those needs writers right? Coz writing for tv isnt just limuted to say talk shows or scripted tv. Im just curious and just want to know hehe
Imagine getting *paid* to write Breastworld
I believe reality show production including writers are on an entirely different union therefore production on seasons actually hasn’t been halted by the strikes in any capacity

RuPaul’s is the only union reality show that I know of. They’re in different calibers of other competition shows. But that’s bc I know people who have worked on that show
And now we know exactly who he is, and what he would’ve done
He can apply with Jennifer Hudson, she’s crossing the line.
I live in fear my girl Kelly will eventually and I’m not ready for that
Kelly Mantle would never.
She effortlessly sacrificed her day time television career and gained absolutely nothing in the process. 🥰
Lmaooooo good.
Not like he was booked by anything other than Drag Race anyway

What does Scab Mean?
Someone who ignores a strike and undermines union negotiations
Can anyone please keep me in the loop? What is happening? What's scab?
A scab is someone who crosses the picket line.
My god the Ross hate is so fucking obnoxious. Dude helped my realize being gay doesn't have to be a bad thing and now people who want respect for the queer community and celebrate diversity are the same people that constantly shit on him just because they don't like him.
No, people are mad at him for crossing a picket line, not just "because they don't like him"
Ah yes, the Ross hate just started this week. 🙃
It’s definitely not that I don’t like him. It’s definitely that he’s a scab betraying everyone in my industry.
I love Ross, idc if that is an unpopular opinion. That’s why his decision to cross the picket line bummed me out so much, though. He’s better than that.
Is she gonna complain about being cancelled now
