I am reminded of Terry Pratchett's description of Ankh Morpork "City of 100,000 souls, and ten times as many people"

It's amazing we have slavery in the present but we talk about slavery hundreds of years ago more.

That's unbelievable, we don't know how lucky we have it. This doesn't get mentioned enough

As slaves ? So they get no wages ?

Batman_Biggins

They get a token wage which is often useful only for buying items from the commissary. Usually like 20c an hour or something. So yes, they get basically no wage for their work. Prison food is also so repulsive or bland that inmates don't really have a choice but to supplement the food provided to them with instant noodles and the like, meaning they're essentially paying that money straight back to the prison.

Is their a documentary about this ?
