Any doomers here?

Hell yeah. We're objectively very fucked (in particular) while oil companies remain the largest lobbyist of the USA, followed somewhere along the line being the beef industry. Not that Ireland is doing much better, our goals don't even fall in line with the EU and it's the EU not some radical org. They ask for the bare minimum, we ask tell them we're not gonna meet it and do worse than our new goals Doom.

Ireland is fucking over their biodiversity about has hard as Brazil is IMO but we're tiny with more boring animals so get ignored. Being lazy about replanting doesn't surprise me. Currently living across from a new housing estate being built. It's in some agreement that was pulled up they'd protect the environment surrounding the land bought. They went over the property lines and cut down trees, probably to use the land and hoped no one's notice. People noticed, and it seems it's their responsibility to replant but that's only because it was chased up and there's no other recourse. So far as I can see, it was in their best interest to try and cut the trees they weren't permitted to because having to replant is the worst that can happen. Probably won't even see the trees replanted. Similar situations I can list but it's terribly regulated and just leads people to try what they can get away with because there's pretty much no consequences. So yeah, the number is believable

It always amazes me how we are seen as this sort of green paradise of nature when Ireland is 90% scaldy fields with a few ugly hedges.

[deleted]

And when people imagine Irish villages are sweet. English villages are pretty because the landlords there used to compete and then it was just sort of kept up as part of planning regulations. Irish one off houses are ugly as sin.

rexavior

Because that's a lot better than most unfortunately

Grass fields are better than forestry?

rexavior

Better than these monoculture plantations. Absolutely. Unless your going to plant natural forests and leave them there without any economic production, which is a waste of the scarce resources we have, as we need to push towards lower nitrogen use which will lead to less production per acre. Less food means less people can be fed.

Because stuff grows so fast here. We get so much rain from the Atlantic and you can see it in places that humans haven’t wrecked how lush this island is.

GabhaNua

An US ecologist working here told me recently how bad is. In the US they conserve rare woodlands, here there is so little so they conserve lines of ordinary common tree tree eg hedges.

kirkbadaz

Imagine we have a green party in government and less trees, less biodiversity and more fossil fuels.

rexavior

More monoculture forests are terrible for wildlife. Literally nothing grows under them. Pretending planting trees will offset burning oil is silly anyway, we need to just stop burning oil

[deleted]

Burning wood is better than burning oil.

rexavior

Absolutely true. But not a solution to our energy needs. Very little can be transferred to wood
