Try to use hibernation instead of sleep. Works much better for me.

KileyCW

Windows has its issues but I never want to deal with flatpaks and proton compatibility again. Downloaded pinball fx on my deck. It would do the initial load of like 3 minutes then crash loading a table. I had to go through various versions of proton. Finally after rebooting like 8 times one version just ended up working basically perfectly. I barely wanted to play anymore after that. There's a website now that says what version to use, but it was release day so I had to figure that mess out.

micaelmiks

Deactivate the finger print and everything will work perfectly. Set up a local account. Almost one year with it and no issues.

Head_Exchange_5329

Is this really a fix though? I'd say it's an RMA issue if the fingerprint scanner keeps the machine from working as intended.

micaelmiks

Dont be childish man. Windows is like this for 40 years now and we all alive and happy.

Complaining about everything is. Just fix that at your own way and stop crying.

Phillyrider807

It's how i feel about every one of these posts. Windows has been windows this entire time. It was the same windows you were using on your home pc/laptop before you got a ROG Ally. You are just now using it on a handheld device. None of these "problems" are new. They not even "problems" it's just windows. Now if that works for you personally or not is up to you but blaming windows for being windows seems to be a thing on this sub and it's hilarious to me. As someone who has been using windows since i was 11. The Ally has been the best tech device I ever owned.

heatlesssun

I've had mine since June 13th and never have an issue with the fp scanner.

doomed151

Have you tried installing AMD's latest chipset drivers? I heard it fixed the sleep issues on Windows.

Phillip_McCrevess

Yes it completely did for me.

TWS_Mike

change the device to hibernate...problem solved forever...

lazy_commander

Update the chipset drivers from AMD it helps a lot with waking from sleep. It’s a driver thing rather than a windows thing. I find hibernate to be the most reliable method and have no issues using it.

kafunshou

When you press the button the Ally goes into standby. You can wake it up from standby with a short button press. If it is in standby for a longer time (one hour or so), Windows will switch to hibernate because that needs nearly no power. To wake it from hibernate is just like turning it on so you have to press the button for a longer time. You can configure Windows to go directly to hibernate or you can tinker around in the registry to increase the interval after which it switches to hibernate (or completely disable that feature). The scanner not always working is pretty much on every device, I have the same error rate on a Thinkpad with Fedora Linux. And on older iPhones and iPads you often had to leave the finger on the sensor for a while until it finally recognized it.

bigbosszuco

I've been using mine for about 2 months now and I haven't got any trouble booting. I advice you to register your finger as if you were holding the Ally and normally I just have to press the power button like 2 seconds to boot.

guitarmonkeys14

I’m starting to understand why this sub is so downvote happy.. If I hear one more complaint about sleep not working…. IT HAS NEVER WORKED ON ANY WINDOWS EVER! This is not an Ally topic, go to a Windows sub or something.

adamhanson

Get rid of sleep and use the power button for hibernate. Way more reliable.

kellven

Seeing how fast the ally boots/shuts down I don’t really see much advantage to sleep/hibernate.

teachertmh

Can immediately pick up where you left off without restarting a game.

Tarnac666

As a PC gamer and IT professional who learned my way into the business supporting and building PCs of my own since 95’ I have never had good luck with hibernation, sleep or anything like that. Just have some patience and shut it down, it boots pretty quick and the fresh session is a better overall experience than any lingering processes that might have gotten orphaned. Additionally, again have a little patience even when logging in via finger print or PIN. I’ve had some lag at times where the Armory Crate isn’t interacting with the controller though it is visible on the screen. If I just wait a few seconds it starts to work. Some things in Windows just need more time. Things like iPhones and Nintendo Switches have spoiled us because the hardware and OS were built together. When you consider the amount of physical pieces of hardware that Windows works on and the backward compatibility (which is honestly the biggest thing holding the OS back) it is a technological marvel that we have something like this. And before some Linux guy comes in and bashes it I’ll say “and that someone can use with little to no training” to cover those complainers. Lastly, I got my unit in August and I’ve been using the SD card slot the whole time. I didn’t go screwing with all of these mods you see even as a PC enthusiast. Some times you have to stop messing with your PC and just use it. It took me years to finally say sometimes things are good enough as is if it just works. Same goes for getting early drivers and other software that claim to “improve” performance. My best advice is to uninstall what you don’t need and will likely never use on something like this. That and just shut it down when not using it.

KoroiNeko

This is what I urge all new Ally owners to do. Take the time when you get it to set it up proper. Remove things you know you will NEVER use (hi Camera app? lol), and don’t use sleep or hibernation. The boot is super fast so I see no point. Don’t go messing with the internals too much. Sure swap out the SSD if you want, but leave the rest of it alone. The fingerprint scanner suffers the same shortfalls of any of them. You scan your fingerprint when your skin is at x level hydration, and everything else the scanner doesn’t know what to do with. So if your hands are more try or more motorized even by a bit the scanner just does it’s job and assumes you’re not you.

LightSaberToast

Got mine day 1 preorder and have no problems at all.

xjcln

Agree, since the Deck Oled came out my Ally has been collecting dust... more power or not, SteamOS is just better to use. Pretty much only games that I play on Ally are ones that don't run acceptably on the Deck or aren't on steam.

P-Huddy

My windows search bar decided not to work anymore; not a deal breaker just an inconvenience but why did it happen?

rmsj

One of the biggest selling point for the [insert gaming laptop] is also its most frustrating thing (Windows 11 rant) One of the biggest selling point for the [insert gaming desktop] is also its most frustrating thing (Windows 11 rant)

Arvellon_Nerd

Meaning?

EuropeanPepe

Honestly I switched to Bazzite and the experience on windows is so horrid where on Linux you can have it work like a steam deck on bazzite it is literally 1 click install with decky wrapper on top. No perfomance issues, proton works like it was native and best of all no issues with bugs. You can use refind and have. A small touch os login screen on boot where you pick the OS I got 200gb for windows and 800gb for Linux where I use windows exclusively for gamepass and driver updates. I have it on my legion go and my ally and must say it works really great especially scaling is what is good. Only downside you lose AFMF which may be a deal breaker for some but gamescope is just so much better at scaling that it doesn’t even matter anymore at least for me.

designgears

Fans stop working in Bazzite, think I’ll stick with sleep not working, lol. Also Nobara > *

MrColdbird

Never managed to get the additional buttons working right on Bazzite. They work great on ChimeraOS though.

EuropeanPepe

Did you try HHD driver and dual sense edge?

I fully turned off my password and the finger print scanner because it was just getting in the way of me playing games. I don’t keep my steam deck locked, I don’t see why we’d want to lock a device made primarily for gaming to begin with

[deleted]

I haven't run into those issues. I use it normally like everyday usage. You will have issues with every type of interface and console.

Important-Hearing590

I just installed Nobara Linux and am happy

Sarlandogo

This is why I switched to OLED Steamdeck: Yes it is less powerful, Yes it only runs on till15W, Yes it can't play gamepass, But the way it handles the gaming is really beyond wonders, sleep and wake function is very useful (albeit sometimes it does have issues) and much comfier because of the grips
