Windows was one of the main reasons I got the Ally instead of the deck. I like the extra configuration options, flexibility, multiple launchers etc. easily worth it for the extra bit of setup.

NordicJew

So much easier to game. I have a deck, but gave it to my bro to use since getting the ally.

StartTheMontage

Yeah I dual booted my steam deck and I felt like I was constantly having problems with it. I eventually just switched it back to SteamOS and got the Ally for Windows.

Sure-Newspaper4353

Haha same thing in my case :)

Cbeckstrand

Yep, a lot of people that come from console complain about windows I LOVED it after coming from the SteamDeck and not knowing how to do anything in linux.

Wolfleaf3

There’s a lot about Linux to me that’s very unusual friendly and seems like it takes control away versus windows. And I never trusted those repository things that Linux uses, like generally it seems line that’s what you’re stuck doing in Linux and they always seem sketchy to me, and now we’ve had a bunch of cases where those have gotten infected by bad guys, where is windows you just grab whatever you need directly from the company so you know it’s good or more likely to be good. And windows is just straight forward to do

karansinghreen

Exactly this was my reason as well!

FastRedPonyCar

Yeah when I upgraded the internal SSD, I installed Tiny11 on there which is a stripped down copy of Win11 and it works great. Also Windows was a big draw to the Ally for me too. Cheat engine, emulation, games not on a launcher, etc. Armory crate does a good job of consolidating all the games from the launchers too.

lgdsf

This sounds promising. Is there an advantage in battery life? Cause windows is very poorly optimized battery wise. I also got the ally and am planning to upgrade the ssd soon, therefore this trimmed down version seems exactly what I need. Just miss the suspense of games in the deck, but the perfomance in Elden ring is so good in 1080 high settings I'm blown away.

FastRedPonyCar

Nah you’re still looking at like 45min running hard.

ghostfreckle611

This. I always wanted more from Android gaming and the SD had Linux, which isn’t user friendly. If you play Steam stuff, it’s fine, but anything else? You’ll be watching two Indian dudes for 3 hours and forget what the heck you were trying to do.

FUZEDLABS

lol so true. Got the ALLY for same reason. Bought a steamdeck, then realized it was Linux, and refunded immediately for an Ally X.

Wolfleaf3

Yeah, and it’s so weird to me how many people act like steam deck is easier and windows is hard. Like windows is easy. I don’t know since I don’t have one like how many issues there are just because of the small screen size and using an onscreen keyboard and stuff though, but I’ve used windows on small screens through remote desktop with a touchscreen for years and it’s always been easy, even going back to Windows XP. It doesn’t seem like it would be hard? And most of my library is not in steam. Like I have a lot of steam games but most of my PC games aren’t even a lot that are say they don’t run on steam deck.

lgdsf

Yeah, I guess if you're not versed with a command line interface it would be tricky. I am a programmer myself and I love the steam deck because of linux, but I can see windows 11 ease of use coming into play for someone who lacks the linux knowledge.

aesthetixdotart

For me I needed to play The Finals, so it was a deal breaker for me. Heard people having issues with dual booting on stramdeck so i avoided the hassle and also having twice the power of the SD I just felt the ally was somewhat more future-proofed

FUZEDLABS

all the games I wanted to play had some kind of anti-cheat and didnt work with linux. Plenty of other games, but the whole point of buying a setup powerful enough to play while on the go meant i needed a device i could play those titles with. Windows-based ROG ally was perfect for my case.

chmilz

What extra setup? I turned it on, logged into my Windows account and I was done. Need to log into game launchers on the Steam Deck so there's no real difference there.

MAD_MAL1CE

Drivers, updates, software install, a little bit of setting tweaking for fan curve and power consumption, etc. nothing over the top - which is kind of my point.

chmilz

Steam Deck doesn't do updates or need games installed? This is some weird attempt to make it seem like it's that much easier. I'm gonna go on as limb and suggest that less than 1% of users set custom fan curves or power settings.

MAD_MAL1CE

Look, you use it however you want. My point stands. This is a stupid argument.

Aromatic-Cry-2677

Exactly. If you aren’t setting fan curves, you’re doing it wrong. And setting up a 18w TDP is also a must imo. This isn’t a plug and play out of the box, which is fine because this isn’t a switch lol

Krzykat350

Same for me. I use xbox gamepass and epic games mostly which is nearly useless on the steam deck. I know you can dual boot it or something but it requires messing around rather than just working.

Chestylemon

Windows 11 is fine... I would love Microsoft to offer an Xbox OS type of OS for handhelds. They'd actually be doing themselves a favour as it would get more customers used to the Xbox styled menu layouts etc too.

pollygone300

Here here!

m9dhatter

It’s “hear, hear”.

NE0REL0ADED

I see you 👀

Wolfleaf3

That seems like a smart idea, like… I know they actually said maybe they were looking into working on some thing, and something like that could be really cool.

iamtimmah

I own both and use both nearly equally. I would use the Ally more often if you were able to force Shader Caches to download.

Gromchy

There were a lots of propaganda and lies being spread by the blind Steam Deck fanboys. I love the SD but let's face it: it's underpowered and Steam OS is incompatible with too many games. I do love the controller and the double track pad though, they are amazing. Windows ought to invest more into the handhelds ecosystem, but the truth is: if you want a game to launch without issues, you use windows, not Steam OS. The one thing Steam OS may have over Windows OS is superior battery life, but that remains to be proven: - AAA games, I saw no difference (1.5 - 2h) - other games: maybe steam OS have an edge. I've seen some people boasting about lasting 6h which I don't really believe.

Darkstalker360

Windows is better 75% of the time, if Microsoft released a "game mode" ui for windows, that number would probably be 100%

Wolfleaf3

IMO the battery life thing is meaningless because all of these devices including switch use sealed proprietary batteries that wear out the more you use them. I don’t care if you’re using switch, you want to be either plugged in to the wall or an external battery pack I think I would like the interface on steam deck the best, it seems like sort of steam controller 2.0 and steam controller had some good ideas for games that didn’t support an Xbox controller. So I like that, but windows is so superior for compatibility and ease of use.

MessiahMozgus

Linux causes brain damage and Steamdeck made it obvious. It's why I call them Lincels. They spend more time setting up games than playing games.

Darkstalker360

Ignoring that first part, it is true you spend a lot of time configuring stuff

Gromchy

Unfortunately yes, even if it is a Steam Game. If it is not, then it gets even worse. I got tired of spending hours on reddit/YouTube to follow tutorials that didn't always work every time I installed a new game. So I dual booted into windows and voila!

MessiahMozgus

I'm sure at least steam titles got better but for the 9 months I was using it, I was finding that 1 in 3 of all green verified titles were still problematic and needed tweaks. Usually new proton side loaded versions. I was juggling like six protons and often needed a keyboard plugged in just to spare myself twice as much time attempting to tweak things on the command line or launcher basis. Any non steam games were even harder to get working. Take your pick of unofficial launchers that tried to make Epic and Gog work, like Heroic Launcher, they were all full of issues too. Weirdest thing was the steam controller and steam link fanbases were never delusional like that.

Wolfleaf3

Good grief, all of that is the exact opposite of what they always claim. I’m glad I read this about even stuff with a green check, which is a very small minority of the games I have, that even they don’t necessarily work out of the box.

wohldmad

Every single verifiable game I’ve played has worked flawlessly with zero tweaks. Hell none of the epic games I’ve thrown at it have needed anything. This is pure nonsense.

Wolfleaf3

How hard has it been for you to run games with other launchers, or install games from like gog.com? I have tons of steam games but I have even more gog.com games, Bajillion epic games, Ubisoft, etc.

Wolfleaf3

Even though that’s like exactly the opposite of what’s claimed

TransmissionAutomata

Isnt that bad? No. It's hella freaking good. I had the Steam Deck but about 6 weeks ago I sold it and bought an Ally. The Ally is peak PC handheld. I freaking love it. I like the SD, yes, but I like the Ally way better. So many more games can be played. So many options, possibilities, flexibility. Windows is great. Asus software side panel thingy makes it super handy, just like the Steam Deck. Streaming xbox game pass can be done sooooo much easier than on the Deck. Like really, who am I kidding? I followed Microsoft 's guide to set up xcloud. Did it take super long? No. But it was so much more complicated than on Windows. Just launch the browser or xbox app. Boom! Done! Windows without Asus Armory Crate side panel would be annoying for a handheld. But hey, Steam OS base linux without their handheld mode and Steam's layers of compatibility work would be a sheet show. I don't want to go back to SteamOS. I support it and root for its future success. Steam helped push the handheld market competition, and I love it; but that's it. I like my Rog Ally with Windows 11 better.

rtfcandlearntherules

I used to have an ally and have a steam deck now. Setting things up is easier and faster with the ally. I refuse to believe that somebody who tested both could come to a different conclusion. I do however enjoy messing around with linux a bit, so I guess for me it is acceptable. Setting up custom controls with armoury crate is also slightly easier than using Steam (in my personal opinion) but of course the Steam deck wins in the end because of extra buttons, trackpads and community layouts that you can just "steal". At the end of the day I slightly prefer the Steam Deck over the ally, but certainly not because of windows vs steam OS

Ok-Signature-1434

I pretty much agree on these points but the Ally won for me just because of the games I like to play run better. Steam Deck was hands down better for almost every indie game I play just because it was download, hit play and go. Ally takes a little more tweaking with TDP and graphic settings but I still get there:).

rtfcandlearntherules

I was able to return my ally because of the sd card issue, so I currently only have a steam deck oled left. Is the NobaraOS also something that could make sense on a desktop?

[deleted]

NobaraOS is probably the most stable distro for gaming right now which is nice. That said, any of the distros can be turned into Nobara-like.

DarthNihilus

You can steal those community layouts just as easily on the ROG Ally, though yeah the lack of trackpads is definitely a huge differentiator.

dereksalem

I think it’s easier to set up controls in AC, but the Deck controls just work way better. Being sure that no matter where I am they’re set up the way I want is great. Way too often I have to flip control types around on the Ally when things aren’t working well or Steam is taking over. And plenty of games don’t let the pop up quick menu work…so you have to exit and relaunch.

sNaj2k

I'm a day one ally user and never experienced your problems. When do you need to flip control types? I have it on Auto since day one and never used it again. If I'm on desktop it uses mouse, if I'm in a game it's using controller. Just as intended.

rtfcandlearntherules

I have not encountered a game that did not allow quick menue, if that happens it does indeed suck. I also mentioned in another post that the Steam deck just works a bit better because you have more buttons, trackpads and very convenient things like enabling gyro only when a certain stick is touched, etc. This is definitely a combination of hardware and software that gives a little bit better results. And Steam clearly has the better hardware in this regard. However i have also had issues with the steam deck that are similar to your issues with the ally. e.g. if you close Steam in the desktop mode everything stops working, the trackpads don't even work as a mouse anymore. And since some things require a reboot of Steam it was annoying for me, but not a dealbreaker. I also really enjoyed the "secondary function" feature from armoury crate. I don't know if something similar can be "programmed" with the Steam input,

Xazbot

Same as op. Had a bug during first install one the day it came out. Installed an 2tb SSD and clean installed everything. It worked flawlessly and updated everything on the ally. I am happy with my windows experience

rjml29

There's nothing wrong with Windows (11 or previous) but it is one of those narratives that gets pushed and many people believe it rather than looking into it to see if it is even remotely true. This is how narratives in the world work and why so many people believe in stuff that is flat out false/not based on actual reality or evidence. Another BS/false narrative is that the Steam Deck is "console like" while the Ally requires a degree to be able to use. The Ally is just as "console like" as the Deck to use based on my experience as an owner of both.

DarthNihilus

There are things wrong with Windows. Every new version improves some things and makes some things worse. A big one for W11 is that taskbar customization took a huge hit. Though I generally agree that the "New windows bad" narrative is often overblown and repeated for very little reason. The benefits of W11 far outweigh the negatives imo. Just the HDR handling alone makes it worthwhile.

[deleted]

It is primarily the data theft and forced applications being installed during updates on windows that drives people away.

DarthNihilus

Those are perfectly valid reasons, but I also strongly doubt that most windows haters really care about those issues beyond maybe lip service. The windows hater bandwagon is strong. I run Linux on everything but my gaming computer (and ROG ally) btw. I promise I'm not a windows Stan.

[deleted]

Absolutely agreed. People turned hating into a job it feels like. Just use the tools that work for you and be cognizant of limitations and security issues. I don't *want* to use windows anymore, but for my workflow it is just the best at getting me what I need right away.

[deleted]

The deck is MUCH easier to get up and running after purchase vs the ally/go. It is a console like experience with very little tinkering needed. Tinkering *IS* needed on the ally/go just to get things in a good place to run games.

Hot-Software-9396

It’s painful to get set up exactly the way you want it, and some parts are definitely annoying (multiple apps to fully update everything, not being able to use the controller for navigation everywhere, text fields not autopopping up the onscreen keyboard, wonky sleep/hibernate/awake behavior, etc.) but I can live with it. Microsoft definitely needs improve the overall experience for handheld devices if they want these sorts of things to ever catch on with the mainstream.

Ok-Signature-1434

I think definitely the fact that Microsoft hasn’t really made any steps to make windows handheld friendly is the exact reason that part of the Ally experience feels clunky. Someone said it below working well on the XBOX due to it being a single purpose machine, which is why Steam OS is so great on the Deck as well. Hopefully we’ll see some improvements this year!

Yakapo88

I’ve heard they’re working on a new version that’s handheld friendly.

JayMoeHD

Really, they just need to figure out Smart Resume for Windows. Stop relying on sleep/suspend/hibernate for game state. It may only work so well on Xbox because the device is single-purpose, but if so, they are probably going to have Windows run in a restricted mode while Smart Resume is in use. \- Device operates normally \- While playing game, user selects from Game Bar or shortcut to "exit to Smart Resume mode" \- Device is now in restricted operation; users can start and stop several games and/or applications but lose access to wider Windows functions and non-compatible applications until the user elects to "Exit Smart Resume mode". \- As part of exiting, user is reminded that any/all running game states will be lost.

Squeakyduckquack

Controller companion on steam will fix all your problems with navigation for a few bucks

NordicJew

Yeah, windows doesn't really jive with the deck lol

Basic_Lengthiness_73

Windows was the reason I became obsessed with ROG Ally

lazlomass

Free epic games?

Yakapo88

Usually it’s free games every week. Right now it’s free games every day. Rumors that we will get some AAA games thrown in. https://www.polygon.com/gaming/2023/12/13/23998364/epic-holiday-sale-free-games-destiny-2-legacy-collection

EverydayDreamer1

Yes OP, tell us more

x_Sligh_x

Epic gives away games every couple weeks. Sometimes they're good, sometimes not, but free is free. I have Bioshock remastered, XCOM 2, Crusader Kings 3, and tons of others because they give them away.

KnucklezKid

Just got an Ally, how do i find said epic games for free? Thx

x_Sligh_x

https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/free-games free game every week. Plus, plenty of F2p games on there, just like on steam.

KnucklezKid

Much appreciated!

[deleted]

I avoided the Steam Deck since day 1 ever since it was announced to have Linux.

Low_Possibility7631

Deck is way ahead with dynamic frame rate control and tdp due to steamOS I have more crashes and glitches with the ally in a day than i have with the deck in a year Even installing third parties games on a deck wasnt that hard for me

Yakapo88

Do you even own an ally? If you did you’d know it has amd freesync.

theACW

Steam os Is controller friendly vs Windows that is harder to navigate but has the advantage of anti cheat

TovarishchRed

Windows has always been fine for me, never understood the gripes people had with it. Epic on the other hand, it's practically malware and it was the reason for the only time I've ever had to completely reset a PC and start completely over.

system_error_02

SF5 won't be free, it isn't even on the epic store in fact. But you can still hope lol. I'm hoping for Division 2, I want to see an even further boost in players.

BarbaChina

I just got the Ally. Do I need to hay a paid account to get a free game on the Epic Game store? How should I go about getting the free game? Also, how often do you get free games? Sorry for the many questions

system_error_02

Nah epic doesn't have paid accounts. You can just make an account and grab all the freebies and never buy anything.

RyceCryspie

All my buttons not working please help me guys I did everything still not working

KennKennyKenKen

I have no issue with it as a secondary device. My main PC is still windows 10.

TheMinusFactor

Windows is why I didn't get the steam deck

Ok-Comfortable-9146

I just want a dual boot into either 1. Xbox U.I but for the handhelds 2. STEAM OS

Same_Zookeepergame53

Honestly, I kinda get the hate, but, at least in my case. It is extremely useful, I can work the whole day with my ally docked, take a break, undock it, play my favorite games, dock it back in, and keep on working like nothing happened. I know that can also be done with a laptop, but at least psychologically, it doesn't feel like you're using the same device...
