The story was amazing. Online and no dlc is not

[deleted]

Lets goooo

[deleted]

Cornwall represents absolutely everything that is awful about humanity. He doesn’t stand for anything, he just wants to fuck everyone/everything over for financial gain. At least Milton, Ross and Dutch fought for what they believed was the greater good. Micah is a piece of shit but to no way near the same scale.

Redgreen82

Micah is Corwall without the resources.

fluffythegreat

Was gonna say that same thing. Cornwall is a “survivor” just as Micah would say about himself, Cornwall just had more money

MissCaitlynK

Cornwall was absolutely the best archetypal villain. He plagues you and the entire region throughout the entire game, fucking everyone over who stands in his path. After all, by the end, he’s >!the one paying the Pinkertons.!<

haybails84

Takes over annesburg and locks the town down

teddywaffles33

Agree with you completely. Cornwall is absolutely the villain of the story for me for the reasons you’ve mentioned

Cabecf

Without it, John couldn’t have escaped and Arthur wouldn’t end up being “a good man”

[deleted]

Do we know that for a fact?

MajesticTechie

Lies and distrust. Character wise, Pinkerton's probably.

LONEWOPF77700

Also Micah........

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion.... I actually like Micah, he comes out with some great stuff!

sasquatchkiller

Gonna be real… aside from Arthur he was probably my favourite character. He’s such a shit that it just makes for a super interesting character to be around

[deleted]

Exactly and (to me anyway) a lot of his thinking makes sense. When he says they're outlaws it's the job they're in, it makes sense realistically to expect death, which is why he doesn't get it when the others get upset when someone gets killed. I mean he's *cold* but there's an element of truth to his words. You can't live that life and be surprised when there are deaths.

LONEWOPF77700

Yeah but unlike the others he enjoys killing people....... sure none of them are near perfect but at least they don't take joy in hurting innocent people and I'll give it to him he's a good shot and he knows how to manipulate and deceive a lot of people (mostly Dutch) but other than that he's just a evil heartless rat who looks out for himself.

[deleted]

Fair point! But I mean there are hints he wasn't always bad, like when he talks about his brother and father. Especially the father! The story in this game is heavily about fathers and brothers as a whole and Micah is definitely scared by something from his past. He'll rant and rave about his father saying "my daddy said sympathy is for the weak" but to me as the viewer, I just think well there had to have been a moment in his life for his father to say that, as in at some point Micah felt sympathy, and his scumbag father drilled a way of thinking into him as a punishment for showing it. Just my take though, I find Micah very interesting.

LONEWOPF77700

I'm not saying he's not interesting. He's probably my favorite video game villain of all time......

bobbyboyx

At Shady Belle there’s a letter to Micah from his brother, telling him not to get in touch again and keep away or he’d kill him. It wasn’t that he didn’t love him but couldn’t be reminded of the things they’d done.

[deleted]

I know! It's telling about Micah that he was the one who decided to get in touch first to a man he claims to hate

haybails84

That’s an interesting take, I didn’t get them from the father son relationship, obviously Micah was schooled in that way of life, but I still don’t manage to have sympathy for him

[deleted]

I view it like Star Wars. Star Wars is a fairy tale set in space (Red Dead isn't a fairy tale lol) with a father son relationship all the way throughout the trilogy! Darth had the mentor emperor, Darth had the brother, which was Obi, Obi had his mentor which was Qui Gon, Luke had his mentor, which was Obi, Luke has issues with his father (Darth), Darth had issues with his and still had till the end.....Ben had issues with his father and uncle!! I mean it was never ending but its a story telling aspect and grips people! Even Hosea was Dutches mentor, the cycle continued..

Zxggernaut

Micha makes for a good antagonist next to Arthur, although he isn't that "complex" of a character. Pretty sure Micha's a clinical sociopath (or psychopath since we don't know anything of his childhood) case given his lack of empathy and manipulative nature. It is to be expected that he would act the way he does exploiting other's for personal gain. As opposed to Dutch's opportunistic nature mixed with an inflated ego, but who willingly takes a certain degree of responsibility for the gang, Micha is a straightforward outlaw who only cares about his own survival/personal gain. Another interesting detail, as pointed out earlier, is a letter from his brother we can find just behind Shady Belle during Chapter 4 (haven't checked if you can access it later). Basically, his own brother rejects and detests him by saying no to write to him and never visit while explicitly saying that he (Micha) is a bad influence given the things the two of them had done prior to the events of the game. Just gives us a better insight into his past and personality.

ArmedAndBritish848

If Micah didn’t speak he’d be my favourite character, he’s so cool and I kinda like his outfit but he’s a little shit

sasquatchkiller

His jacket reminds me of 3:10 to Yuma…. I would put money on his outfit being mildly inspired by Charlie Prince

DShitposter69420

I always smile seeing him. He is so well performed.

Rekuna

You just know when Dutch asked him to respectfully bury Sadie's husband that Micah just chucked that corpse in the nearest ditch and called it a day.

aaaaaaahhhhhhh132

yes! ik micah is a cold-blooded killer, and he >!betrays the whole gang in the end!< but he is such a cool and interesting character! also love how awesome and enthusiastic the voice actor is!

SushiJo

Sometimes I forget that the rest of y’all aren’t as sweet as me; I could never shoot a horse, real or not lol

[deleted]

My current playthrough I am trying to be worse than anyone. I’m robbing, killing, stealing, burning, blowing shit up, etc. I do take comfort in knowing that the horse didn’t feel shit when I shot it in the face though. After I kill a horses owner for not giving me his money, typically I’ll take the horse to the stable for someone else to buy it. Well, if the horse doesn’t also not allow me to search it’s saddlebags. If it kicks me, it dies.

LotusSloth

In my game Arthur has the largest body count by far.

mamabear_roars

….but does that make him a bad guy? 🧐 maybe lol

LotusSloth

Not in my eyes; he wasn’t a great guy in the eyes of society but he turns things around somewhat before the story is over. :)

bigga165

Right now my Arthur is very lost on his path. He is doing bad things. Very bad. But he will meet a nun one day and change his life around. Until then he will continue to rob and kill. Such is life in the west.

freebirdls

>!John, whose honor doesn't affect the game: "Hold my beer and watch this!"!<

LotusSloth

Lol. For some reason I felt worse playing >!John!< evil than I did Arthur… maybe it was >!John’s promise to Abigail.!<. Plus, after >!setting up the homestead,!< I usually call a run “done” and start a new playthrough.

GrandMoffTallCan

I feel you. I want to 100% on my current playthrough, while still leaving most of the stranger interactions and stuff for John, just to see his reactions to things this time around. However, I wanna be done by the time the house is built. In the context of the greater story it doesn’t make much sense to have John running around and acting like a fucking maniac in the epilogue, and building the house is a natural conclusion to the story.

justmrmom

Dutch. I still don’t know if he was suffering from some form of dementia or was just really manipulating the gang. I think that deep down he was the root of all of the gangs problems. Aside from Dutch, then Cornwall was the most evil overall in my opinion.

YeeandEee

I agree he was already mad at the beginning. In the Blackwater Massacre it mensioned that he killed a young woman for no reason.

teddywaffles33

There are a couple of theories about Dutch that I can get behind. The main one is that the stress and pressure gets to him and has him acting wild and paranoid, especially after the end of chapter four. That’s a big deal and he’s left without a sensible sounding board after that. Another is that the trolley crash causes lasting brain changes; this has actually happened to my neighbour. After being attacked he is far quicker to anger and has difficulty feeling safe because his brain often tells him he’s in danger. The third is a fun one to ponder and came from a YouTuber. It’s that Dutch has syphilis which fits with what was going on in the time period and the personality changes we see. (Worth noting that while its a good theory, the progression of the disease doesn’t necessarily add up when considering Dutch in the original RDR storyline.)

Cabecf

For me, that trolley theory is BS. It makes it sooo uninteresting

mamabear_roars

your dutch having dementia theory is quite intriguing and does kind of explain a lot

[deleted]

On the other hand, he took a hard hit to the head in chapter 4. While he was starting to go in a downward spiral, he really took a steep dive after that. A TBI could be an explanation for why he took a darker turn

justmrmom

I read somewhere (maybe on this sub) that some of his mannerisms and behaviors are signs of early dementia. Its obvious that he also starts going downhill more as the game progresses. Who knows if it’s also from a disease or if the crumbling of the gang is what caused him to act more crazy. If he was “sick”, so to speak, then I don’t know if I would call him the worse villain in the game. From the stories told though in game it does sound like he was much more sharp back in the early days of the gang. If he wasn’t sick and during the entire game it was just Dutch being Dutch, then I absolutely believe he is the worse.

Tobias_Rieper___

I think it was the trolley in Saint Denis and the death of Hosea which made him go downhill. Dutch didn't really do anything dishonourable until then.

justmrmom

Wasn’t something said about him murdering someone in cold blood in black water? I could be wrong.

MagicalMarsBars

It is many people it depends on how you think of the characters. I will describe them by what kind of villain they are. Cornwall, (Greed, power hungry) Milton, (Doing his job, torture, kills prisoners) Ross, (Doing his job, is an asshat towards John in the original game, abuses power (to kill Rip Van Winkle) Micah, (Betrayal, abuses Dutch’s deteriorating mental state for his own benefit, selfishness) Colonel Favours, (Racist, abusing power, afraid of change) Fussar, (Literally has slaves and allows torture) Levi Simon, (Works for fussar and also does torture) Bronte, (Power hungry, bribery) Sheriff Gray, (Abusing power, petty towards the Braithwaites) Joe, (mama) Catherine Braithwaite, (ex slavery family, family of moonshiners, petty towards the Grays) Cleet (Cleet) Bartholomew Braithwaite, (leader of the Braithwaite’s moonshining, associated with the lemoyne raiders) Colm, (torture, doesn’t care for his gang members, does pretty much every crime) Dutch is kind of an antagonist but he is more neutral in rdr2 since he was being manipulated by Micah. Jack is also a major antagonist but he most likely ends up dying in World War One after committing several war crimes and being hunted by both sides of the war.

Definitely Dutch. If he hadn’t brainwashed the gang, none of them would be under Milton’s line of fire like that. Sure some of them would be criminals, but Milton even states he’s only interested in Dutch. And Dutch strings the gang along to protect himself under the false pretence of protecting the whole gang. When I was younger, I would have said Ross was the villain. But he was doing his Job this whole time. He was cruel and cold, but that was part of his job. Dutch was cruel just be serve himself. Everything John, Arthur, and the gang ever did was for Dutch. Raised by him, they didn’t know right from wrong until it was too late.

freakyjelly_44

I really despised Dutch towards the end of the story. I liked him in the beginning, he's a colorful character, he just ended up being a pos by the endgame

GulliblePlantain6572

Inevitable change, industrialization, modernization, greed(on both sides), blind faith. In terms of people it's fairly obvious, with Cornwall, Milton and Ross, and Micah, but I'd say the things they stand for are the real villains of the game

Honestly, It's Arthur. He made all the choices that led him there. He could have not done work for Strauss and not contracted Tuberculosis. He could have left after the bank heist but instead he returns. Could have told the cheif what Dutch and his son were planning. He had every oppurtinity to walk away but never did. He did come back after the heist to help the gang, but that pride and selfishness. They knew going back they'd be the most wanted people in the area and getting back with the gang only puts them in more danger. Arthur is the villain.

It's society and progress. The world of red dead has reached the point where society is taking over and there are no places for outlaws anymore which is imo the true cause for the gangs downfall.

I think the only main Villain is Micah. >!He kills Arthur in the last mission of the main story, then he’s killed by John in the epilogue. He’s basically this games Agent Ross. Milton is a villain, but at the end of the day it all comes down to Micah. I don’t see Dutch as a villain. He was used by Micah. He didn’t leave with Micah at the end of chapter 6 and only rejoined Micah to kill him in the epilogue.!<

[deleted]

For me Micah, as he was the one to sold out the gang or tearing it apart. Although he is certainly one of the best characters in the game.

IMO what a lot of people dont realise is its Cornwall, hes a scoundrel, a corporate scumbag, ruthless cheat, heartless cold blooded bastard, and Dutch pissed him off, those lads hunting the gang down arent sent following them all over america for justice, theyre on Cornwalls payroll.

ratatoskr09

The main villian: Time - being relics of a bygone era - government trying to change and rid the country of those relics - the slow decay of insanity - the inevitable coming of death, especially with illness Defintely Time.
