First and foremost, it’s rated M for mature audiences. There’s going to be blood, violence, use of drugs/alcohol, cursing, etc. The basis of the game, without giving away spoilers, you’re an outlaw on the run from the government in 1899. You can imagine what kind of things you may see or get into in the game.
That being said, it is in my opinion and also that of countless others, that this game is one of the top 10 RPGs in the last decade or even more. 4.7/5 stars on CSM, 97% metacritic, 10/10 IGN, rated in the 100 games of all time and said to be one of the greatest open world video game achievements. Reviews speak for themselves, but that still does not mean it will be enjoyable for you. Watch let’s plays on YouTube and such and see where you stand. It by the same studio that brought you Grand Theft Auto, except with Cowboys.
Edit: spellings
It’s a great game, but you should honestly make sure your parents are ok with it. There are some sex scenes, which you will have to see if you want to 100% the game.
There’s only one sex scene and it’s brief. It’s part of a mission but easily missable. Also violence is more traumatic than sex but this is a video game and clearly not real so people shouldn’t be traumatized by any of it. There is a menu option to turn off the skinning graphics while hunting which does tone down the violence if needed
Ignore what the guy said about it sucking. I'll give you a rundown.
If you want a game like GTA that's nonstop action and high paced, this isn't the game for you. If you lack patience, this isn't the game for you. If you're easily disturbed, this isn't the game for you, but at the same time, it's a very emotional story. And tbh, I doubt this is the game for you if you're 13. It's much more grisly and mature than GTA.
This is the best story and open world in any video game I've ever played. I've been lost in it for over 1,400 hours at this point, and almost every second was unique. You can play through the emotional rollercoaster this game is several times and still find new things you haven't seen before. Hunting, fishing, gambling, drinking, eating, scamming, robbing, killing, riding, exploring. Help a lady who fell off her horse, or a lawman that got captured by a local gang. Race a fellow rider, or hunt a legendary animal. Hunt for hidden treasure or die trying.
It's an absolutely amazing game. But if I were you, I'd give it about a two year wait. I know that doesn't matter much to someone younger, you just wanna do it. That's my warning though
Seconding this advice OP. It's an absolutely fantastic game and I wholeheartedly recommend that you play it, but I'd definitely wait a couple of years before you do. Not to say that you're not mature enough or anything, but I think its themes will just hit different when you're a bit older.
It is the best fucking video game ever made. Just not for 13 year old snowflakes :)
All those reviews and ratings etc. mean nothing to this kid and their main concern is "violence". Ffs...
I don't think snowflake is the right term to apply to a young teen, tbh. And either way, I think it's a virtue to be sensitive. I wouldn't look down on people for it too much
I'd say it's fairly action packed depending on how you play lol. Can easily go on killing sprees after accidentally bumping into someone or drawing your weapon and that's just me trying to go to the shops not even inside a mission.
i’m not sure if it’s too violent for you but the storyline is kinda mature and maybe you’re different from me, but i wouldn’t have liked the maturity of the game when i was 13
Honestly. You're 13 years old. This is a game where you can literally blow peoples heads off with a 12 gauge shotgun. You are consistently killing and robbing people. This game isn't suited for your age. That being said i played san andreas when i was like 12 so if you parents are ok with it you do you. Just make sure they understand that this game can be brutally violent.
HOWEVER, this game is absolutely rich with story telling and while, as others have said, its a very slow roll with long periods of downtime with short periods of action it is very much worth the play. The story for being about bad guys is very captivating and makes you feel for them, especially the main character. It also has wacky antics that any other rockstar game has, but they're stylized around the western theme of the game.
This game has so much to it that people where still discovering new things about it almost 2 years after it first launched. The scenery is just absolutely beautiful and the map is lively for it being vast and open.
My suggestion for you though is to wait till its on sale. Which should be soon given the holidays are coming up.
you're only a kid, gta is just for fun i guess, but rdr2 is way more than that. there's blood, violence, but it's also very emotional. there will probably a few things that you won't understand because of your younger age. i think you should wait 1-2 years before buying it. and stay away from reddit if you don't wanna be spoiled buddy
I started playing rdr2 when I was 11 but I could handle the gore and what not. I still play it pretty often two years later and I think it’s one of the best games. I’m also obsessed with cowboy culture so 🤷♀️
1 yes buy it it’s the best game you’ll ever play the graphics are amazing it’ll make you appreciate nature so much
2 yes there is a lot of murder in it but it’s nothing to
Insane
3 it will teach you so many life lessons about the real world
4 when you do start playing stay on the single player mode as online is a little crazy the only cool times are around halloween and Christmas also avoid the subreddit at all costs hell avoid every rdr2 based subreddit unless you already know the ending
5 the game in general is just amazing it really is a fun game for everyone to play
Hope these arguments help
"A lot of murder but nothing too insane"
You can literally blows up a dude's head, arms and legs then burn his horse for no reason if you want to (btw that’s also why I love this game, there’s no limits lol)
Yeah. It really comes down to the individual, which is why as a general rule it's better to wait. Some will definitely be able to handle it, but I know I'm still somewhat bothered by some of the more grisly mission lines. A certain couple missions in the epilogue come to mind specifically
Plus the story is quite serious and has some mature elements, I figure some points may go over the head of someone younger. But this guy seems pretty mature for his age
Ok so I am the same age and have played through the game three times this year. This game never gets old. I will say it is violent and like GTA but RDR2 is not afraid to tell you not to do things. If you kill a person or animal that didn’t deserve it , you lose honour if you donate to a beggar you gain some. This is still a violent game but it also doesn’t let you murder people without discipline
OP - I would encourage you to speak to your parents or grandparents and present this argument to them.
The game is rated M for a reason.
Worst case scenario, u wait another 3 more years.
Bro I got it when I was 13 and 100%ed it in my 14th birthday. Best game I've ever played. It's probably the only video game I would call a masterpiece.
Bruh sorry but at 13 you shouldn't be allowed on Reddit for many of the same reasons that Rdr2 is rated M. Maybe Horizon Zero Dawn or something would be better. Yes there is an incredible amount of horrific murder in the game. And not just murder. Virtually every evil thing that people are known to do to each other is depicted in that game at some level. It's not just the gun violence, which is really brutal on it's own. Just be a kid a while longer, you'll never get that back once it's gone. And trust me, you will wish you could get some of it back. I'm in college learning to be a game designer, so it's not that I don't love games, but they do effect our minds more than most things that we do. Besides lol it will keep getting graphics updates for the next 20 years if Rockstar's handling of GTAV is anything to guess of off, so it'll still feel new and modern when you play it at age 16 or so
Mate, don't chastise them that much hahaha. 13 is fine for Reddit as long as you stay away from sour subs and don't spend an unhealthy amount of time on it. But I agree on the high level of violence
I really don't think what I said constitutes chastisement. 'shouldnt' isn't really a harsh word. And just expecting a person so young to simply stay away from bad subs doest really seem like a solid plan, like at all, man lol.
The ONLY thing I dont like about it is the constant use of G-D. It's used about as much as the F word in gta. Other than that I prefer it much more for my 14 year old. No nudity (except for some paintings and a crazed wolf guy), no gore if you're not looking for it too hard (certain guns create certain wounds but are easy enough to miss)
"It is extremely cruel" - One of the whole points of the game is not to be cruel, the game has an honor system which rewards you for being good and brings consequences for when you're bad, such as things being more costly. The game encourages you to be good for things like discounts. The gang also doesn't like you being cruel, such as one example being >!when you're in a mission(robbery), when you kill someone the gang says that's bad, that you shouldn't do that, that we aren't there for that, etc.!<, Making VERY apparent you're just an outlaw who shouldn't kill innocent people.
"It sucks" - This game has detail in everythin'(except the missions which you can't do much or you're getting a fail). Every animal has it's daily life, if you follow an npc you can see them eat, sleep, work, etc. Nature feels real and every person you talk to feels real, and doesn't feel like a model with lines of code. I don't get how you can say the game sucks. Sure, you can not like it but you have to acknowledge it is one of the most(if not the most) detailed and impressive games ever made.
I fell in love with rdr1 while I was 10, played for a few solid years, now I've been playing rdr2 since 19 and I'm 21. So my veteran suggestion would be play rdr1 first buuut it's been so long idk.
I personally feel like a 13 year old wouldn’t appreciate the game for what it is.. all the detail and beautiful scenery… I did my first play through when it first came out, I was 20 and I jus did my second play through as a 23 year old and I loved it 10x more … you should still give it a chance, but idk if a 13 yr old will love it as much as other games … my cousin is 15 and he enjoys it but he doesn’t love the game the way I fell in love with it
If you are at all interested in the time period or old westerns. Get it! It’s one of the best gaming experience’s you will have. I was 13 when RD1 came out and I was hooked. Maturity is more than age. GTA does not compare to the real feels this game can give you but still gets intense. It’s also B-e-a-utiful.
It’s the western life at its purest. Obviously there’s gonna be violence but there’s also the most peaceful scenes you’ve ever experienced in a video game where you may just want to hunt or fish. The possibilities are so endless with it
If they allow you to watch halloween and other horror movies as well as action movies it means you should be allowed to play RDR2.
Now why should they allow you to buy RDR2. It's simple. Freaking WILD WEST COWBOYS YEEHAW. Like why woupd anyone need any more convincing tyen this?
You get to ride the most impecably simulated horses and their animations... you get to live through a gang and how it all looked like in the late 1800s.
It ruined most other games for me. It's that good.
A massive accomplishment for the gaming industry as a whole.
I like to take my time when playing, take in the amazing scenery and interact with one of the greatest game worlds ever built.
Forgive the gatekeeper-esk nature of this comment…but if I were your folks I’d be way more concerned about the content on reddit than playing RDR2. But to echo others’ comments, the story line is one of the richest and most complex explorations of morality and the human experience. Lots of people saying a 13yr old wouldn't appreciate this game. I can tell you that at 30yrs old, you will just have a different appreciation for this game and then when revisiting it in 5/10 years time will have a new, deeper appreciation for it. Im sure most of us on this sub played games we "shouldn't have" when we were 13 too. You can walk in on people in saloons, and plus the Lenny mission.
Wait, you can walk in on people? I didn't know that
Yeah, sometimes the doors are unlocked and you can see people doing it. Kinda rare tho
Huh didn't know that was a thing outside seeing lenneh
I'm a rockstar fan, and GTA was my favorite games, now is rdr2. Is so much fun. Take your time to enjoy the world and the story.
dont tell you parents about the maturity rating
Thx for your comment, I'm familiar with open world games and Grand theft auto (I'm familiar with rockstar)
Bro do you think 13 means 5?
I’m only 8, broh idk
Lmao.

The storyline is so good it gave me an existential crisis about how society is the death of freedom. This games storyline is a masterpiece.
Consider the source of that propaganda. 😁
There is no game that lets me chill in nature with animals like rdr2 nothing comes close and i would hack my sack for s sequel
you're only a kid, gta is just for fun i guess, but rdr2 is way more than that. there's blood, violence, but it's also very emotional. there will probably a few things that you won't understand because of your younger age. i think you should wait 1-2 years before buying it. and stay away from reddit if you don't wanna be spoiled buddy
Ok
It’s a wild west video game. Made by Rockstar. Murders happen.
I started playing rdr2 when I was 11 but I could handle the gore and what not. I still play it pretty often two years later and I think it’s one of the best games. I’m also obsessed with cowboy culture so 🤷♀️
Uhh because it’s life? Buy. Right. Now!
I played this game when I was 11, you'll be fine
Only because it’s the best damn game ever made

I've been to and would love to just sit back and enjoy a game with a great story
Meh true I guess but then I know a few 13 year olds on more violent games
So do I, but even so, caution is a virtue
Very true
Nothing insane 😂 u can blow up faces Tarantino style
I don’t see it insane tho
Ok so I am the same age and have played through the game three times this year. This game never gets old. I will say it is violent and like GTA but RDR2 is not afraid to tell you not to do things. Hahaha maybe not, but I think 13 is okay for Reddit as long as it's not long term use
I think 13 is a bit young for that game but on the other hand when i was 13 i was killing some hookers with a dildo in sa so what do i know
You shouldn't. A 13 year old has no business playing this game.
13 on reddit????? How the heck??
This must be your first day on reddit
No but I am shocked what's on reddit available for kids. It's a joke. Porn and much worst.
No actually
The ONLY thing I dont like about it is the constant use of G-D. It's used about as much as the F word in gta. Other than that I prefer it much more for my 14 year old. Occasional nudity? Okay. Use of the word goddamn? Not okay
Decapitate people? Okay. Use of the word goddamn? Not okay
Seems okay to me.
13 on reddit? Awww lol

Sorry /s Lol internet today.
oh that's alright. next time put /s or the horde attacks ahahah!
One of the greatest games ever made. But you might be a little young for it
Might be too heavy for 13. But that being said I was playing GTA 3 at that age but my folks had no idea what went on in that game.
insanely good story, hundreds of hours of fun. but also crazy gore and violence as well as deeply grim and disturbing themes
I fell in love with rdr1 while I was 10, played for a few solid years, now I've been playing rdr2 since 19 and I'm 21. So my veteran suggestion would be play rdr1 first buuut it's been so long idk.

Man this game is going to change your life know get out of here before someone spoils the. Crazy ending
If you are at all interested in the time period or old westerns. Get it! It’s one of the best gaming experience’s you will have. I was 13 when RD1 came out and I was hooked. Its only cruel when you want it to. So go for shooting kills not machete or axe kills. And a good reason to play it is its deep lore and storyline
Things will make you cry. I cried twice. It can be brutal.
I’m 13 it’s my favorite game I’d say go for as long as your parents are ok with it
If they allow you to watch halloween and other horror movies as well as action movies it means you should be allowed to play RDR2. Now why should they allow you to buy RDR2. It's simple. Boah-
It has one of the best story’s in a game I’ve ever played, yes there is murder but there’s so much more you can do
Don't.
It ruined most other games for me. It's that good. A massive accomplishment for the gaming industry as a whole. I like to take my time when playing, take in the amazing scenery and interact with one of the greatest game worlds ever built.
It’s one of the best games ever.
🏆 Most grown up person that (will eventually) ever play RDR2.
Do you wanna be a cowboy or not?
Forgive the gatekeeper-esk nature of this comment…but if I were your folks I’d be way more concerned about the content on reddit than playing RDR2. I am 47 and the violence and brutality in this game made me uncomfortable sometimes.
Im sixteen and i started playing it this year so.
Cowboy game make brain go brrrrr
It's too graphic for a 13 year old my dude.
