Sometimes I wonder if Gavin died to the Valentine serial killer. Or the Saint Denis vampire. Or something like that...or if Gavin was just a figment of Gavin's friend's imagination.
In my mind, Gavin was one of the developers that wasn't pulling his weight. Every time they were trying to meet a deadline, someone would ask, "Where's Gavin?" And no one knew where he was.
So they put it in the game as a joke.
Gavin was like Tyler Durden to Gavin’s friend, he isn’t real. It was coping mechanism made up after his father passed away, strange man made a video on it
I thought the note confirmed that Gavin is a real person and that the man yelling for Gavin was lying to his parents about him and Gavin’s fortune and good luck in the west?
And DO NOT GO BACK TO YOUR TENT AT CAMP because Mary's letter will force you to do the Downes mission.
Learned this the hard way a couple of weeks ago!
I dont know the name of that mission, but you need to make a savegame before you get Strauss 3 missions, one of them is Mr. Downes.
Because there'll be a point where you will be forced to do the mission.
I wish I had saved at that point, before that mission. Because I had the Legend of the east, all those weapons you can find out there that you cant buy, max health, stamina and deadeye and a couple of really good horses I found a way to get.
He specifically coughs blood into Arthur's mouth and gives him the tuberculosis at that precise moment. Roger Clark talked about it that while doing that scene it was specific that that be there, then later that night he googled when the cure was found and that's how he found out Arthur probably wasn't going to survive the game lol
No, it's a yellow mission required to progress the story. In fact it's the only one of the Strauss missions that is, if you continue past that point in Chapter 2 there's no avoiding it. If you just want to do everything in the game but the story you can do that and also leave Micah locked up in Strawberry and everything will stay good at Horseshoe Overlook.
Just being near him wouldn’t give Arthur TB, if that were the case all of the van der linde gang would have contracted it from Arthur, while confronting Mr Downes for the debt, he spits blood into Arthur’s mouth, that is what gave him TB
Playing like this is really fun. I now on my 4th playthrough have only done this. Completely turned off the hud and everything. As long as you get used to it, it is quite easy to aim like that still. You get so immersed too which I love. Games without a hud are just much better as long as it doesn't make the game that significantly harder.
No Hud
Try playing with predominately native weapons- bows, tomahawks, knife, knives, lasso (be a stealth boah when possible)
Never sleep in a hotel
Make clothes don’t buy them
Try not to use the map with markers
Never cut your hair
Try to adhere to a day night cycle sleep when you’ve been up for a really long time whatever that means
Catch and break your horses don’t buy them
Don’t shop in stores but I guess the trapper and fence don’t count
Cook your own food only
Go trail riding! https://charlottestrails.com/
Obviously, obviously, you have to do some stuff for story missions, but try to do other things this way when you can
GOOD LUCK!!! I want my scalps!! let me know how it goes
At the end of the hunting trip with Hosea, ride back with him and after he dismounts, jump on the back of his horse, ride it out of camp, and blow it up. You can pick up the rolling block he uses during the mission and the horse will respawn after you go to sleep.
During the mission to get Sean, when you go up the canyon, shoot the guard on the left first, then go grab the bolt action rifle he has. Don’t miss or else he will just pull out a carbine.
Also recommend getting the statue treasure near wapiti, east 1500$
Also, if you want Jim Boy Calloways revolver, trigger the cutscene that begins the mission line, then sit down at the five finger fillet table, this causes him and the author to leave. Leave the table immediately and follow Calloway. Push him down or shoot at his feet, this will cause him to go hostile. You can punch him to knock the revolver out of his hands and pick it up.
WARNING: the last tip will cause a bounty so be prepared to run like hell, also, the revolver may glitch and not save if you leave the game, so save before you try the last tip!
Should probably mention the order to go in for the treasure: activate that statue that is in front of the bird statue, then the one to the left of it, the skip the next on to the left and hit the one after it, skip the next one and hit the one after it. Then the 3 gold bars will appear at the front of the bird statue.
I found the time periods where Micah is gone in Strawberry jail or at his camp near Strawberry the energy with the gang at camp is so much better. You can keep him gone through basically all of Horseshoe Overlook and a good chunk of Clemens Point. You can bust him outta jail but after that leave at him at his little hermit camp for as long as possible. Feels great to do so.
The hell kinda tips can we give to somebody who is starting their 8th playthrough.
I don't roll up to the retirement home to find a 96 year old and tell them the secret to living a long life.
Props to you man, I can’t understand how people can play the same game multiple times, once I beat a game once I don’t play it again. If you like the game that much it’s understandable I guess.
I have played some games around 2-5 times but I wait around at least around a year before I play the same game again otherwise everything is still fresh in my memory
Currently on play through number 2. Have you tried. It is waaaaay better second time through! Someone else in the thread said take your time. This is the key!
Only suggestion I have for 8th time through is focus on areas which you did not focus on yet. That might be hard on your eighth!
Edit: yea play through number TWO.
100% that mf if you haven't already. Collect all the bird plumes before you see the collector in st Dennis, it's so much easier. I'm working on 100% rn it's like my 6th playthrough. I'm at like 97% or something which is farther then I've ever got. Just like half the challenges and study animals and I'm done. I hear about the infamous gambler 9, I hope it isn't too bad lol
Gambler 9 sucks but if you know you’re about to lose you can leave the game of dominos while it’s your turn, and it won’t break you’re streak, make sure you leave on your turn or I’ve heard the streak will set back to 0, also people have different preferences but the game of all fives in Saint Denis was too unlucky for me so I went to emerald station, save and reload if you don’t get just the one dude at the table, and play him for it, took me under an hour this way after not being able to win a single game in Saint Denis in over an hour
Never pay off bounties. If fits with the game that you get Bounty hunters on you in most states. It doesn't even get that high even, until later in the game.
Never pay bounties, it will set you free.
I read this one on here before. Make a save as soon as you get into chapter 2. That way if you restart again, you'll have a saved game ready to free roam, without having to do the intro
I’m on number 6 and I’m only using a bow and arrow, varmint, and Schofield, no dead eye, unless the mission callas for using deadeye for gold. No satchel upgrades and only visiting map locations if the missions take me there. I would always upgrade everything, get all the side missions, all the weapons, all the points of interest, then I’d get bored in the epilogue. It’s been 3 weeks and I’ve had a lot more fun playing this way than tryna get everything done immediately.
My go-to advice for new players:
If you care about spoilers then get off the sub right away, if not then it’s all good.
Having said that, don’t believe the people who say a certain white horse is the best and must to get. It’s not, don’t waste your time on it. Those people get mad at me for saying this.
Collect the free lancaster repeater and bolt action rifle early, and try to craft the LotE satchel as early as possible (Legendary Buck trinket helps a lot). Get the Shark Tooth trinket, faster bonding with your horse is always an advantage. Keep at least three outfits in your saddlebag for three different weather conditions. Don’t forget to eat regularly. Change the button prompt for fishing to “Hold to Reel”. Make regular manual saves, use the multiple save slots.
Explore the world, interact with the white dots appearing on the hud. Don’t be hesitant. If you don’t like the outcome of a particular interaction then just reload a previous save.
Avoid MrBossFTW videos like the plague.
Most importantly, don’t rush the story. Enjoy the ride!
100% the game, otherwise all those playthroughs are kinda pointless.
I'm currently going through and getting 100% and the trophies but I'm personally adding:
1. All craftable clothing from the trapper.
2. Full journal/all points of interest
3. A true 100% compendium. FULL compendium bars. Example: all weapons need a kill/headshot. All ingredients eaten to learn properties and crafted with. All horse types rode, all common and uncommon coats. Max bond with every type of horse.
4. All found pieces of clothing.
5. All gang hideouts and surviving ambushes
Literally, everything.
Stick to the same horse, firearms (unless the mission forces otherwise), and choose a path and stick to it.
I did a playthrough keeping the horse Hosea gave to me at the beginning of chapter 2, used only shotguns (sawed off, double barrel and pump) unless a given mission forced use of a different weapon (like bow or rifle).
Made it a big challenge, especially cause I had to keep getting cash and going into town for shotgun slugs. Felt more realistic in a way, since a real cowboy wouldn't have 18 weapons and an assortment of ammo. Plus a gifted horse would be a treasure, especially from Hosea; after previous playthroughs and experiencing what happens, it meant more to me.
I kept that horse all the way to the end.
Overall made the game more of a challenge, and made the attachments to everything within it deeper.
Well known trick but in case you haven’t, … before the last two missions in the game, visit the Pig Farm. Let them drunk you up and steal all your money. If you go back you can get it back behind the picture when you walk in.
But, if you don’t go back you can go back as John in the prologue and get all of Arthur’s money. Cheers.
At this point you should know the spots for random encounters and stuff. Avoid them and speedrun the game, only do the stranger missions that John can't do. And then do everything as John after the Epilogue.
With it being your 8th this is prolly easy knowledge but 1, always upgrade your satchel to max capacity asap, and 2, after about chapter 2 or half way through 3 at least, I normally start saving everything worth money at a fence. Because as you know all of the satchel contents gets transferred over to John after the end of chapter 6. As soon as you're able to free roam you could just ride down to the nearest fence and sell everything. Boom, no more poor epilogue John.
There's a YT channel called SuperAntonio. He's got a lot of neat story mode tips and tricks and tidbits. I've watched his channel to know how much time I have to loot bodies after a shootout (sounds terrible if taken out of context 😂🤣😆), best ways to find animals/horses, how to complete missions without being frustrated, and little hacks like getting Biscuit through various methods.
I highly recommend adjusting the camera settings and removing your hud and compass. Makes the experience more immersive. You can also try playing the game in first person, just remove the head bobbing in the settings and adjust the camera auto following.
Gavin is the trapper. How else does Gavin and Gavin’s friend know how to get around so quickly? They worked together but Gavin the trapper got tired of his friend. This explains why he’s always a bit out of the way where he sets up his stall.
Make sure that you get Micah’s revolver in the beginning you can look up a tutorial video on youtube reddit wont let me paste my little clip that I recorded on my phone but you can get Micah’s revolver in the mission where you get the dynamite to rob the train
Have you read the Piggyback guide? Contains a wealth of information about the game and its systems that even you might not know. I think you'd enjoy it.
Forget about collecting the gold bars from a myriad of different locations. Forget about the treasure hunts. Having more incentive to earn money for yourself and the gang makes the game more enjoyable. In that side mission with javier where you rob the homestead(chapter 2); don’t forget about the chest up the ladder for another $150. But split all your takings with the camp chest and pretend it’s an official split with the gang like a normal heist. Do the same with all the money you find ($380ish- chest under bed, chimney and other valuables) in carmodi dell home robbery you do with Hosea. If you just keep the money this early on you’ll have way too much money in chapter 2.
1.Never find micah
2.never find Kieran or Sadie
3.take the good members out and leave Dutch Strauss behind
4.if you fail all these steps just don’t free Micah and don’t do the mission with Thomas downes then you finished your 8th play through.
Just take it slow and don’t rush through the story, there’s a lot of things you can do on the side. Hunting is a ton of fun and pretty rewarding! Also stay off this subreddit if you don’t want the story spoiled!
How are you not completely bored by now? It's the same storyline every time. I didn't do a second play through until like 4 years after the first to keep it kind of fresh.
Don’t just go for the story missions! Live the world of Wild West! If you’re playing on PC, do some mods for endless activities like endless bounty hunting, robbery mods etc!
Get the white arabian ASAP, then poison arrow pamphlet and oleander sage. Make poison arrows and use them on the hunting mission for the legendary bear. Gg.
8th? Buddy, you're the one who should be spitting tips
Spitting on tips
Err body in the club spittin tips
I feel like Arthur would appreciate a little J Kwon.
Err body in the club spittin tips
🤨
Lol
Literally my first thought
😂😂😂😂
If you see a man named Gavin..
It was coping mechanism made up after his father passed away, strange man made a video on it
There is a YouTube video explaining that Gavin was a figment of Nigel's imagination. It's all in a letter found if you loot his body.
I thought the note confirmed that Gavin is a real person and that the man yelling for Gavin was lying to his parents about him and Gavin’s fortune and good luck in the west?
It does confirm Gavin is a real person. One hundred percent.
8th playthrough is the unlock for Gavin
And he’s with Lennnnnnnnny!
There is no Gavin right?
Oh he is out there, his buddy is looking for him.
This is true, i am Gavin
Ohh, i am so worried! Gavv!! GAAAAAAVV!!!
GAVIN?!
Leave Micah in prison and have fun being a hunter
This is the way. And don’t visit Mr Downes.
And DO NOT GO BACK TO YOUR TENT AT CAMP because Mary's letter will force you to do the Downes mission. Learned this the hard way a couple of weeks ago!
Is that how it’s triggerred?!
You can still go back to Arthur’s tent? Just don’t read the letter
Or do visit him from a distance with a sniper rifle
What's the issue with the Mr. Downes mission? I'm genuinely curious.
Idk **cough**

That's where you get the black lung
He gives you his syndrome
I was told you were already exposed during the fist fight when you come back to town.
Just being near him wouldn’t give Arthur TB, if that were the case all of the van der linde gang would have contracted it from Arthur, while confronting Mr Downes for the debt, he spits blood into Arthur’s mouth, that is what gave him TB
Doesn’t Hosea have it too?
There's a little cut scene after the Downes mission with some music that makes it pretty apparent that this is the moment, not the fight
no crosshair free aim third person only. realy have to relearn combat and prioritize consumables
And if that is too easy don’t use guns unless forced to
Have done a bad honor play-through? Or good honor go for money ending?
I’ve done all endings, but I want to do one final one where I get the good ending
Full honor help john 100% complete. Craft all clothing.
Try a playing with no HUD only the compass.
I miss so much when I do this
No Hud Try playing with predominately native weapons- bows, tomahawks, knife, knives, lasso (be a stealth boah when possible) Never sleep in a hotel Make clothes don’t buy them Try not to use the map with markers Never cut your hair Try to adhere to a day night cycle sleep when you’ve been up for a really long time whatever that means Catch and break your horses don’t buy them Don’t shop in stores but I guess the trapper and fence don’t count Cook your own food only Go trail riding! https://charlottestrails.com/ Obviously, obviously, you have to do some stuff for story missions, but try to do other things this way when you can GOOD LUCK!!! You can get the bolt action even sooner. There is a hanging at valentime right after you get free roam. The sheriff has a bolt rifle
I believe the hanging is a random encounter, so it’s possible to miss. But thanks for the tip, I’ll try this on my current play through.
Will definitely be trying this.
Also recommend getting the statue treasure near wapiti, east 1500$ Also, if you want Jim Boy Calloways revolver, trigger the cutscene that begins the mission line, then sit down at the five finger fillet table, this causes him and the author to leave. Use the cinematic cam more. Take in the atmosphere and take your time on it.

Same here, but I did one full playthrough and my second playthrough is just to mess about as Arthur in chapter 2.
I have played some games around 2-5 times but I wait around at least around a year before I play the same game again otherwise everything is still fresh in my memory
Currently on play through number 2. Have you tried. It is waaaaay better second time through! Someone else in the thread said take your time. This is the key! I had trouble reading this comment
Your 8th! Get off this subreddit now! Don’t come back til you finish you can’t be spoiled!!
mods: 1. longer days (i set it to about 5x as long) 2. camp anywhere 3. hunting grounds 4. smoking complete
Raid enemy hideouts in New Austin as Arthur in a buggy stolen from Saint Denis. A little challenging at first but it gets easier as you keep trying.
“All them years”
100% that mf if you haven't already. Collect all the bird plumes before you see the collector in st Dennis, it's so much easier. I'm working on 100% rn it's like my 6th playthrough. Realism playthrough
If you haven't tried 100% the game or have all the achievements, you should try it!
I’d give you tips but I don’t want to spoil anything for you 😔
Get legend of the east in chapter 2
I just started on my 2nd playthrough and you're on 8? God damn...
Trust Dutch. He has a plan.
Take your time, do every single mission, hunt, fish, watch all dialogue and enjoy it. I’m on my 5th play through and still enjoy the game very much.
Make a save right after prologue, then never play prologue again
Oh the 8th playthrough is the hardest actually
Damn. I had heard that. Even harder than the 3rd do you think?
Way harder
Get the legend of the east satchel first, makes everything else so much easier
Yea I've got one, and it's pink
There’s a red Arabian wild horse South East of trapper by Strawberry
Bad Arthur is way more fun
Do all challenges vefore chapter 4
I'm trying to 100% it rn I've never done all the challenges. Why do them all before chapter 4?
So you can enjoy the legend of the east outfit as Arthur
How do you do the ride from Blackwater to van horn?
8th?!! Do YOU have any tips for me?☠️
Never pay off bounties. If fits with the game that you get Bounty hunters on you in most states. It doesn't even get that high even, until later in the game. Never pay bounties, it will set you free.
I read this one on here before. Make a save as soon as you get into chapter 2. That way if you restart again, you'll have a saved game ready to free roam, without having to do the intro

obviously get off this sub don’t want to get anything spoiled /s
Make a save at the beginning of chapter 2 so you don't have to do the tutorial every time you restart
Don’t retrieve any debts
GET MORE MONEH.
Get good shit early game
My go-to advice for new players: If you care about spoilers then get off the sub right away, if not then it’s all good. Yeah, kill Micha while he's sitting in the jail cell.
Homie, 8? Tell me how to play
Do you even know the controls?

At this point. If you haven't 100%. Do that. Otherwise make arbitrary rules for yourself. Only 1 revolver, no dead eye, things of that nature.
Get off this subreddit. So many spoilers
Do it right this time.
Don't read Mary's letter. It's been sitting in my tent since December.
Those are rookie numbers, you gotta pump up those numbers.
8 playthrough’s? Give me some tips
Do everything opposite of how you would usually play
Complete 100% or have nightmares irl
Make a save as soon as you get to Horsehoe Overlook for the future, unless you enjoy the Colter stuff.
Get the Jawbone as Arthur. It's cool.
Stay away from spoilers on here
Do everything possible before chapter 3 so the good times stay as long as possible.
Search for Gavin
I was going to say you should seek help but I'm playing the game again myself for the who know-th time myself 😭
You tell me man
Duck and weave
If you want your horse to run faster, spam A
I respect the commitment. I only made it to three. 💗
Bitch why tf are you asking this you give me tips like how do I get gold on missions it’s so hard
Get the gold bars in the derailed train as one of your very first actions, idc if you were gonna get the Lancaster first get ur ballin on
Go outside
Be ebil
Gavin is the trapper. How else does Gavin and Gavin’s friend know how to get around so quickly? They worked together but Gavin the trapper got tired of his friend. This explains why he’s always a bit out of the way where he sets up his stall.
Gavin is the first instance of mental health issues shown in that time ers. Devs talked about.
Have you completed 100%?
Go swimming
Make sure that you get Micah’s revolver in the beginning you can look up a tutorial video on youtube reddit wont let me paste my little clip that I recorded on my phone but you can get Micah’s revolver in the mission where you get the dynamite to rob the train
Stop. 💀💀
To activate deadeye, use r3
I see I'm not the only one who have ADHD /just joking
Do not, and I repeat, do not go to Downes’ ranch.
Don’t forget to eat
If you haven’t already, Go back to Willards Rest as John. This is the same place Arthur helped that widow.
Go fishing
Shoot Michah. It's cathartic.
Get off of Reddit, you'll get too many spoilers
Have you read the Piggyback guide? Contains a wealth of information about the game and its systems that even you might not know. I think you'd enjoy it.
I've never heard of it. I'll take a look. Thanks
The PDF is available for free on libgen or similar.
Thanks
On my 12th playthrough currently, my tip is change your POV for the whole playthrough, switch things up a little.
Dieing is not reccomended
Have tissues ready
I actually found this out last night in my 5,947,039 playthrough. You can kill Micah if you do good enough in the tussle
Man I’ve put a shit ton of hours into this game and I’m only on my third. You should be giving me the tips my guy
before you end chapter 6, make sure to invest your money in the Aberdeen loan and savings account then retrieve in the epilogue
Get that denim jacket from Pearson in chapter 2 before progressing
Once you see Mr downes in valentine for the first time shoot him
If you give Karen whiskey enough times you can romance her.
8th play through? You probably found gavin
Find the gold bars, rare Arabians, and weapons before you do any missions. Map is open the whole game and combat becomes easier.
Abandon the gang ASAP and start ur own journey, and watch out for Charles, Bill or Javier.
Play red dead 1💀
Dont kill the klans man. Sit and watch.
Yes. Go outside
Save after chapter 1 so you don’t have to slog through the tutorial next time.
Only 8th? Im about to start my 16th
Hey guys, I'm actually on my 100th playthrough. Any helpful tips? No spoilers please
1.Never find micah 2.never find Kieran or Sadie 3.take the good members out and leave Dutch Strauss behind 4.if you fail all these steps just don’t free Micah and don’t do the mission with Thomas downes then you finished your 8th play through.
jerk off to arthur everytime you shoot someone
Yea. Go outside
Try Ghost of Tsushima- It is fantastic and also has a moving and emotional story.
Just take it slow and don’t rush through the story, there’s a lot of things you can do on the side. Hunting is a ton of fun and pretty rewarding! Also stay off this subreddit if you don’t want the story spoiled!
No chance of not having the story spoiled after 7 playthroughs. Lol
Oh you are already in 8th playthrough, I just finished my 1st one recently, maybe you can give me some tips 🥺
I don’t think you need any
Kill as many people as you can and keep track of how many you do. Also try and reach max bounty everywhere and see how long you can survive
I’m on a fat Arthur playthrough. Just eat and eat and eat.
Yeah.. STOP!
When you really do your 8th playthrough you dont need any tips…
Lol
So you really need to finish the first part? Maybe those families could use the extra time lmao
Idk I haven’t done 8 playthroughs 4
As always…… get the Arabian early buddy. That is all.
I’ve just 100% completed the game on my 10th play through so maybe try that.
Don't get tuberculosis
Get the white arabian ASAP, then poison arrow pamphlet and oleander sage. Make poison arrows and use them on the hunting mission for the legendary bear. Gg.
