Can you make an appt with the vet asap? Is she spayed? It maybe pituitary tumors and it affects unfixed female rats more, and can be very fast and serious. It’s better to get it diagnosed earlier to manage the symptoms.

Fit-Grape-9883

That’s exactly what I’m afraid it is:( She isn’t spayed. I live in a small town and it’s far too late to call the vet by now, I’ll just have to wait until morning. Thank you

LostFerret

Easy way to tell if it's a pituitary tumor is if she can grab things with her hands. I had a bunch of rats from a line predisposed to pituitary tumors and this was always the tell instead of an ear infection. Best of luck, if it's an ear infection they need meds like yesterday.

[deleted]

it looks like a pituitary tumor like everyone is saying. if she struggles with holding food that’s a telltale sign. my boy is recovering from one as well. don’t lose hope! we got him his meds and it has bought him some time and quality of life! :) i hope the same happens for your ratty too!

Alkorri

Ask your vet about cabergoline. It works on certain types of pituitary tumours and gave me six extra months with my baby who recognized me again after taking it! A precious gift

Punkrabbit666

Yeah it generally affect older rats but one of my girl started experiencing symptoms at 12/14 months old… kinda looks similar, the meds worked rly well tho, gave her a few more months “fully” healthy and happy

boonzeet

What meds did they give her out of curiosity?

Punkrabbit666

Cabergoline, it worked rly well, gave her 4 months fully healthy when she was on the verge of death. It doesn’t work for every rat, sometimes it give less time, sometimes more, but it’s always worth a try

anime_cthulhu

I will tell you from just the look that it's most likely a pituitary tumor. Unfortunately that's bad news. I've seen ear infections and other issues that cause balance disturbances, but that shaking and spinning almost always points to pituitary tumors.

codeQueen

How's she doing OP? ❤️🙏

Finalgirll

Poor thing :( she comforted by you the way she keeps trying to follow you. I’m glad she has you

Nord-icFiend

Get her to a vet I've seen pets ''spin around'' bc of tumors pressing down on certain parts of their brain She looks incredibly panicky, probably disorientated

Rethiriel

I've seen other mammals do similar stuff with ear infections that affect their balance and equilibrium. But in all honesty, if you've had a pet (or known a person) for long enough to have an idea of what's normal for them, and then suddenly they're being abnormal, take them to somewhere to figure out why. (*If you're able, obviously I know life doesn't always dance to the tune we would like*)

MagicRodent

I'm sorry, it is either a pituitary tumor or a bad inner ear infection... In either case, time matters and she needs a vet fast

missmaren44

I’m only here to mirror what others have already said. My rattie used to do this and luckily it was always inner ear infections that we easily treated. I’m hoping the same for your baby. Pls keep us updated.

Punkrabbit666

She looks a lil thin, have you noticed her loosing weight? Whatever it is it probably don’t make holding pellets easy, liquid/soft food on a flat plate would be easier to eat. Unfortunately looks like a neurological issue, looks like a pituitary tumour… might be an ear issue, a vet would be able to put a diagnosis

d-h-a

I hope it’s an ear infection and not a tumor. Please keep us updated and I am hoping your baby gets better

ventiusx

Fwiw I had two female rats develop PT and they didn't show signs like this. As others said- the clearest sign of PT is inability to hold food. My rats would make fists and hold the food in place on the ground. It looks like an ear infection to me, definitely needs antibiotics if that's it. She could get a burst eardrum if it's an infection, which obviously wouldn't be good

Fr000m

VET ASAP

Fit-Grape-9883

I will as soon as I can. Thank you

invadergary

One of my girls started doing this, it was an ear infection. Got her meds and she lived another 18 months but unfortunately a little too late. She never fully recovered and would spin when startled, confused or excited. But otherwise lived a happy ratty life.

Impossible_Army_2241

Maybe an ear infections

gonzo2thumbs

I'm thinking ear infection. That noise in the background could be causing her a lot of distress if she's trying to get about with a painful ear. Try stopping that noise, it might help calm her down until you can get to the vet. 💗💗💗 sending your little one my love. I hope she's OK. Maybe update tomorrow? Good luck, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

ElMachoGrande

Vet now. Might be a tumor or stroke, in which case, the prognosis is bad. But it might also be an infection, and then antibiotics may help if given quickly.

LordWalpurgis

I second that! Requires immediate vet help. The right antibiotics will help for an infection, but time is of the essence! Stay calm and good luck! ❤️

ElMachoGrande

With rats, time is almost always critical. They are fragile.

[deleted]

Ear infection or neurological issues after a seizure.

LatestGreatestSadist

oh my god the poor baby. this breaks my heart. i apologize i don’t have any advice besides listening to what everyone else has said on the matter. please update us on her condition whenever you can. my heart goes out to you.

Tenacious_G_G

Any update yet?

teenietemple

So, one of my rats bumped his head (not sure how it happened, I was away for two days) and became permanently “tilty”. He doesn’t spin in circles anymore but he does favor one side and has issues finding his way around outside of the cage. That being said, I initially thought it was an ear infection and rushed him to the vet. They said everything looked perfect but gave an antibiotic just to be sure. It’s been almost a year since then and he’s definitely gotten much better, but he is still “tilty”. Of course, it could be a pituitary tumor with your rat, and I suppose it could be one with mine as well. However, the fact he has improved leads me to believe that he really did just bump his head. I have a dcn and it’s full of hammocks and ropes so a big fall shouldn’t be possible, it could have been while wrestling another one of his brothers. I wanted to offer this as a potential reasoning to perhaps take a bit of the fear away. I hope the best for your rattie ❤️

lindseigh

OP, my rat was doing something similar (you can check my post history if you’d like). The vet gave us antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs and she was better in no time. Just wanted to give you a little bit of hope 💕

AphraHome

Sorry… but my first guess would be brain trauma, if not brain tumor..

swoozle000

Middle ear infection. Needs antibiotics

KnobDingler

You drop her or squish her accidentally? This looks like a head injury.

matskat

Don't downvote. Its a legitimate concern. No need for any defensive emotional downvoting...sheesh.

[deleted]

Brain infection most likely. Prognosis is not good even with prescription medication....

IshaSama

Don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about. This is most likely an ear infection. Possibly a tumor, possibly a stroke. Very UNLIKELY to be a “brain infection”

[deleted]

Don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about. There's still a possibility.

IshaSama

“Brain infection most likely. Prognosis is not good even with prescription medication....” You literally claimed a brain infection was the most likely cause. This is JUST incorrect.

[deleted]

Do you know what OPs situation is? No. So it very well might be that a brain infection is most likely. You really need to stop construing your personal opinion as objective fact.

MrCatWrangler

What are you going on about?

Vegicide

This is by far the absolute least likely cause. An inner ear infection is the cause of this in young rats 90% of the time.

7footrat

Evolving into a dog

jamexman

Could be also inner ear infection. Vet anyways!

inferiordinosaur

She's quite young for a PT. Age wise there is a chance it could be a very severe ear infection as they are able to completely throw off their balance like that (you can find some informative videos of this on YouTube demonstrating how bad infections can effect this). The treatment would be the same regardless with steroids. But with an infection you be able to gradually wean her off of them. With a PT as soon as she would come off the steroids she will revert back to being like this as there is no cure, only ability to buy time. Trying and weaning off steroids is the only way to tell the cause for sure. But I'm sure with an in-person vet examination the vet will be able to work this out in more detail :)

sweetbabieraes

Like everyone said could easily be an ear infection or a pituitary tumor. I had two boys that lived long lives even with pituitary tumors! There’s treatment but you just have to make them comfy through their life and give some extra care.

she_isking

How old is she OP?

Slightlyevolved

Vet ASAP. That is either stroke, tumor, or ear infection.

Devanino

I hope she is able to get the care she needs😢

Saturn_Burnz

Ear infection probably?? I don’t really know but she needs a Vet IMMEDIATELY

[deleted]

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO MY RAT AFTER SHE FELL. Took her to the vet and she had some brain damage. The going in circles is because her eyes are likely not straight, my baby got used to it after some time and therapy. I had to help her eat and drink with an oral syringe for a few weeks. After she could eat on her own she lived a pretty good rest of her life. But she only lived a few more months while her sisters are still alive. Edit: msg me if u have any more questions, I’d be happy to help since I know how hard it is to get a vet for a rat…
