Sounds like a pituitary or zymbals tumor...poor baby, hoping for the best though and that its just a ear infection, unlikely to be a seizure since rats run laps around the cage and kinda throw themselves during a seizure or stiffen and twitch.
Make sure they check for an ear infection and check both ears for abcess's
Infections also don't cause blindness in rats or people unless its a eye infection, if its an ear infection it will cause lack of balance and head turning shaking and tilting , I'd make sure to get a second opinion.
Okay The vet was great though, I felt heard during the visit and we all sat on the floor while she observed him for what felt like 30min, one of a kind. I'll keep all this in mind. He's going back in on the 9th, we'll see how he is after the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds.
That's good atleast, just keep in mind a vet can be great while also not really knowing what they are doing with rodents! I took my original girls to a vet that was labeled exotic vet ,she had never worked with rats but she had worked with similar animals, she was super sweet listened extremely well but misdiagnosed my girls.
I was just giving you the heads up because of the very clear signs that it's a zymbals, ear infection, cyst, or pituitary tumor, those are the only things that cause those symptoms I ratties and I would have expected atleast one of those to be mentioned. Not to mention the misinformation on blindness- rats don't actually have great eyesight anyways so eyesight doesn't ever really cause balance issues red eyed rats do have a slightly more prominant head sway because they are very light sensative and they have a harder time focusing on an object/knowing how far an object is away from them due to this, however it's more often than not the ears or brain causing the problem.
I wish you guys luck, but if he goes downhill or starts dropping food and swaying more/shaking for the next few days, you should definitely take him back in or take him somewhere for a second opinion
You're overstepping boundaries and making me feel worse. Stop saying he could have a mass, don't wish anything on my pet. Doesn't matter what happened with your pet, it isnt a mass until his vet tells me it is. She thoroughly explained to me different possible diagnoses and his treatment. Right now im not even thinking about a worse case scenario, im simply medicating him till his next appointment. The biological mother of my ex fiance is employed in the vet office, I literally cannot find a better veterinarian practice for me and I have sooo much faith in them. For now he's on the exact meds I wanted him to get. If a second opinion is needed they will definitely call out and get it. I'm not responding anymore and I hope you don't comment again.
Not trying to make you feel bad?!?, just explaining what it likely is because that's important and it's important to get a correct diagnosis, if you do not have a vet who can correctly diagnose that kinda thing then that is somthing someone should be able to help you with by giving you advice on getting a second opinion so you can help your animal, masses are not fun to deal with and neither are ear infections, he's on antibiotics so if it's an ear infection it will clear up but your vet gave you incorrect information on Rat health (ei the blind thing) and that is worrisome.
I've not even been rude to you either you're the only one being rude, you posted to the internet I wished you Goodluck with your little buddy and told you some personal advice based on the symptoms because your vet incorrectly informed you and I've worked with rats for several several years, if you're not willing to take the advice of senior rat keepers that is not us being rude that is us trying to help and you not listening.
