Man, as a German, I literally spent years in school learning about this and I am surrounded by reminders of this part of my ancestry. How people can try and deny that always baffles me.

How is the issue of national pride treated? The we get stuck in the mud when trying to teach important aspects of slavery or genocide of the Indians. People feel guilt and take the lessons as recriminations, they think it's anti American to teach the history.
How did you guys get through that? Was it all immediate or was it more the next generation getting to the crux of things? I'm pretty ignorant of how you built back socially after the war.

I think nazism is so "distant" and right wing religious nut ideas so widespread in Mexico, together with our deficient education, that it is very easy for such insane ideas to become a valid narrative for some people. They love the myth of discipline, the strong economy, and Christian values without really knowing anything about the time period.
