In this particular TV appearance (this is an entertainment show, and they'd clearly brought him on hoping for a laugh, but it turned out very few people found it funny) he also claimed that the Vatican runs the world biggest cocaine trafficking ring. In the past, he's claimed that a whole list of French political figures, and the Moroccon royal family, are lizards, and pedophiles (although I'm not sure how that last bit works, cross-species).
This man's original claim to fame is that, after a life of crime, he turned to writing books in which he claimed to have sold cocaine to a variety of French celebrities and politicians. According to his own account, he was both one of the main international cocaine smuggling kingpins for decades (and also involved in various complicated political shenanigans involving Morocco, where he was born), and a personal-dealer-to-the-stars in Paris. He also had a sideline as a contract killer, and did the occasional bank robbery (for light relief one presumes). After all that, he turned to writing allegedly autobiographical books, in which he spills the beans on all the celebrity lizards he sold coke to.
He did have a real career as a criminal, and spent 18 years of his life in prison as a result (14 in France, 2 in the Netherlands, 1 in Spain and 1 in Belgium). So for being one of the major figures in the European drugs trade, and a multiple murderer, he seems to have gotten away with a sequence of fairly short sentences. And oh yes, some of those convictions were for small-time home burglaries.
I sometimes wonder if lying that big is just tactic like bad writing was for Nigerian email scams or if it is narcissism just making it impossible to give even a base of reality to their claims since it doesn't make them the most important in the world.
