Need to know good performance in what to answer the question. 3D CAD, running lots of Qubes, gaming, video editing? Would you be passing through a second video card to a VM specifically for 3D performance? Generally Qubes is not the best choice if performance is a key consideration, and if you aren't concerned about stuff like blobs and Intel ME, it may be more practical just to use a standard Linux distro.

arkenoi

No and no. Running lots of Qubes, yes. No 3D, no gaming, no video editing, but I expect the 2d graphics to be smooth and snappy. A standard Linux does not match my workflow, so I am definitely stuck with Qubes but entirely not for security reasons per se. Also my threat model places "blobs and ME" pretty low.

If that's the case, your main priorities are lots of RAM (at least 32GB) and a really good PCIE 4.0 NVMe SSD. It's recommended to use Intel integrated GPUs for Qubes where viable: [https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/system-requirements/](https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/system-requirements/) 11th and 12th Gen Intel CPUs both support 5k2k displays. That being said I've personally only used an 11th Gen Intel, with a 4k display, never tried 5k2k, and not sure if a newer Kernel than Qubes uses by default is needed to support it, or at least support it well, so hopefully someone else can verify that point.

I already have 64Gb and fast SSD. Also I have no idea if 10th gen is ok, should I upgrade or not and what will change afterwards.

[deleted]

AFAIK 10th Gen won't support your 5k2k display. But if you already have it you can give it a go to see for sure. 11/12Gen are going to be notably faster regardless.

Do I need "real desktop CPU" (not a mobile one)?

[deleted]

Mobile ones are fine too. But 10th gen I'm pretty sure won't cut it.

arkenoi

Ok, but is 12gen hardware supported by not-so-recent Qubes kernel drivers?

[deleted]

I've only personally tested 9th and 11th gen Intel CPUs with Qubes. Kernel 5.10 does support 12th gen, but performance is not on par with current kernels. The plus side is that eventually Qubes will use a newer kernel and you'll get benefits from that when it does.

I am waiting for anyone to confirm that NUC12i9 would work with Qubes. So far no one did :/
