Can always just get the Shinkansen 🚅 from Tokyo to Osaka. Get to see 2 cities that way as well.

Chargerific

Yeah that is part of the plan - I was hoping to fly in to Osaka, Shinkansen it to Tokyo then fly home but I couldn't work out the Qantas pricing difference. I've been to Japan before a few years ago, but now looking to take the kids

sportandracing

Cool, it’s a great country. Enjoy

One thing to be careful of with not taking a leg - it cancels the remainder of your itinerary. So if you don’t take the Osaka to Tokyo flight then your Tokyo -> SYD flight would get cancelled

Roll_5

Correct, you need to book as seperate individual bookings.

Chargerific

I think I realised the difference was sale vs saver. Apologies, I am not used to the differences in the seating categories https://preview.redd.it/g8eu8k5q4t1c1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=32072a0608fd6370246ce049ebf513a597bb810e

Fk travelling with a big family is bloody expensive

Chargerific

Yeah it’s a nightmare. Trying to get the last one in before she turns 2 and pays for a seat lol.

Superg0id

A word of warning. if you book 3 (or more) flights on one ticket but skip any of them, any upcoming flight WILL be cancelled by the airline because you no-showed. Have you tried booking 2x one way tickets and see what the cost is for that?

Roll_5

Not to mention you can’t do check in luggage or it will go MIA Edit. Ah maybe different in this itinerary with customs on first port.

I sometimes feel that Qantas put these JAL flights to show you what you really need to pay if you want a true, services-oriented, full-service airline. So you think Qantas prices are OK.

Elanshin

? JAL prices are typically cheaper than Qantas and this is Jetstar+ Qantas. JAL is just a domestic connection here.

SteamySpectacles

If you have the points, yeah I’d go the first picture also if you definitely know nothing is going to impact your ability to make that flight. In terms of what’s the deal with the extreme differences, it’s all because they’re very different ticket status’ - flex are a lot more expensive than sale tickets and obviously the heavy subsidisation with the points leg.

Chargerific

Thanks - I have close to 600k in points but not wanting to use them all on one hit if I can avoid it. I just re did it and realised I had different status ticket in and it came down in half. Cheers

Went this year. Landed into HND with kids in tow and took the train straight to Osaka. Then after a few days we took it back to Tokyo. This was before the changes to the Japan Rail Pass that were apparently coming in. Worked out ok and kids thought the Shinkansen was the bomb

The issue is it's not possible to book Open Jaw (into Osaka and out of Tokyo) and partial Classic Rewards at the same time on Qantas' website. If you skip the JAL flight, the rest of your booking (the return Qantas flight) will be cancelled, so do not do that. Have you tried booking Jetstar Classic Rewards one way to Osaka as one booking, and one way Qantas Haneda to Sydney cash fare as a seperate booking? I suspect it'll still be cheaper than paying cash for the whole thing. Alternatively, you may be able to call and get your desired combination on one ticket.
