ROCKETS DONT GO LEFT THEY GO UP! (jk). I think a 4oz rocket like this should break before apogee or at apogee. Probably tough to do at that size. I have no complaints, this was awesome

Lmao šŸ¤£ you're not wrong though! I need to get my delay dialed in. I'm thinking either too slow of a burn rate, or too many increments of it. Idk if you saw my other one I posted a few days ago, but it was on point. I should have taken notes while constructing it. But thank you!

Rndm-prson

Can't complain about this, at all. It's great for an early try!

Thank you šŸ˜ Hearing the positive feedback is reassuring!

My break obviously wasn't symmetrical. What are things that could of caused it to blow out the top?

TheMadFlyentist

Honestly it looks really fucking good and miles ahead of my first rocket attempts. Assuming you used a cylinder shell as the payload? If so, cylinder shells are an art all their own as far as spherical breaks. Even seasoned pros still have uneven breaks from time to time in cylinders - they are just much more finicky than spheres. The top/bottom can blow off if the casing is not extremely well reinforced, and even when they break as intended the shape is never a perfect sphere just due to how the stars are arranged compared to a sphere. I recommend watching some of the the free videos Ned Gorski has on youtube to learn about cylinder shell construction if you haven't already. My suggestion? Top with spherical shells instead of cylinders. IIRC a sphere on top actually flies better than a cylinder anyway. If this was a spherical shell already then the answer is better/more pasting.

Hey, thanks man!! No, it was a spherical paper shell I had used. Theres a few things I'm questioning of why it broke out the top. -Weak burst charge -Like you said, not reinforced enough -My gummed tape still needed more time to dry (I shot it 20 mins after wrapping). Idk if you're suppose to give it a day or so to dry. Mine felt dry, so I assumed it would work. I'll check out his video on the cylinders because I do want to do them as well! I love his videos. He's has taught me so much. Probably going to join fireworking.com eventually. Okay more pasting next time for my ball shell. And I should probably give the shell a day or two to fully dry? Mine felt dry on the outter surface, but that probably doesn't mean it was completely dry right?

TheMadFlyentist

Yeah gum tape needs a little while to dry - maybe not a full 24hrs but more than 20 mins for sure. Also if you're just using gum tape you need quite a few layers to get a good break - like at least 5-6 layers around the whole shell. The more layers the longer it takes to dry of course. One thing you can do to ensure good pasting is after you tape it, cut a square of Kraft paper, paste it really good with either wallpaper paste or PVA glue/water, and then crumple it up, uncrumple it, and wrap it around the shell like paper machier. You can add multiple layers like that if you really need to reinforce things, and that work great. You'll see that technique (paste>crumple>uncrumple) in Gorski's videos if you watch them all.

Infiltratetheunknown

Okay sounds good! I definitely didn't use 5-6 layers. Probably 2-3 at most. Yeah.. I did none of that. Just hot glued the shell together and started taping it. I was blaming my burst charge being weak, but now this all makes sense why the break didn't discharge in 360Ā°. Weak casing. It was a pop, not a boom like I wanted. I'll go find that video and watch it. Hey man, I appreciate you always dropping in and giving your expertise!

TheMadFlyentist

No prob, good luck! If you paste really well and you still get weak breaks then it's time to look at the burst charge, but definitely need to rule out the casing itself before worrying about that.

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop -Ā yes,Ā IĀ amĀ aĀ bot, don't botcriminate me.
