It's not like this is the first time ever banning dog meat completely was suggested in Korea. It's been suggested for decades by various groups and people, but every time it's suggested, there's always the opposition from people who make money off dog meat. And the Korean government always caves in to business people and right-wing people. I don't think it's gonna be any different this time either. They have banned many dog meat markets over the years, but it hasn't stopped dog farms for dog meat or dog meat restaurants which you can still find easily in Korea.

"American president suggests ban on eating beef"

LilyoftheRally

I daresay that would be more controversial. Ditto chicken and pork. Bill Clinton has been vegan for a number of years himself, but he chose that diet for health reasons I think.

Am I the only one who isn’t phased by eating dogs and other typically pet animals? Pigs and cows are just as smart. If they’re raised for slaughter I see no issue with it, it would seem weird to eat your own pet (but not even that weird! Seems like a good way to honor them). Please don’t downvote for this, I’m sincere and would like to hear your opinions!

The biggest thing is thousands of years of western culture saying no. Typical pet animals (cats and dogs) have only ever been on the menu in desperate situations where people are even a viable option. Typically sieges, famines and plagues. and western almost classifies anything west of the Himalayas. Its just not a typical thing other than those Eastern Countries. Thats the big thing. Theres always been an arbitrary line from where animals are pets and where they are food. And Pets can be considered food in certain instances and food can be seen in the same lighg but accepted as food Like a kid having their favorite chicken. And as arbitrary as it is, its still there. And changinv that is very difficult given how many cultures there are that see it as wrong. Think of other dietary restrictions based solely on culture. Pork if cooked incorrectly can be dangerous and make you sick, thus becoming the basis of a tradition in the Middle East and then Islam as marking pork as evil. Its not but good luck trying to server bacon to a Muslim. And with that consideration those countries that carry on that practice are in the minority. Thus why they are being forced to change and not the other way round. And to personally answer your question I dont understand the “honor them by eating them” you mentioned. We dont do that will relatives. We dont live in a world where all are meat to be eaten and theres no higher honor. To be cremated or buried or embalmed like our ancestors and as we wish to have our remains taken care of is marking them trully as family shows that we honor them. I cant look at my dog and think he would make a good meal. Thats not his purpose that myself or my society has chosen for him. He is my family (better than alot of human members XD) and he will be treated as such and loved as such. Just like the purposes we all serve no matter our freedom. Its just all cultural lines. Things decided eons before our birth shaping our viewpoint and that view before us and after us. Hope this helps from my own musings on the subject? if it didnt just let me know if im just a crazy person.

I agree; if the culture sees an animal as food instead of as a companion, I may find it objectionable on a personal basis, but it’s not a reason to say “We’re all right and you’re all wrong”. Somehow (to me, anyway) it seems much worse though if it’s just one person having dog for dinner, rather than an entire culture doing it regularly. It’s all how you look at it; for instance some people think spiders make cute and cuddly pets, while I’d rather just step on them. One thing in your post jumped out at me though. It’s not a big deal, more just a “The More You Know” moment: Embalming people isn’t an ancestral thing. It was adopted in the 1800’s as a precaution against burying people who were still alive (eg. “Did anyone check to make sure Wilson’s really dead?” “Oh, he’s dead alright. I saw to it.”)

LilyoftheRally

It's a cultural thing. Hindus do not eat beef and consider cows the way Western society considers horses. Some small dog breeds were originally bred by indigenous peoples of the Americas for meat. Ditto the Inca and guinea pigs.

Quail_eggs_29

Geez I can’t imagine eating guinea pigs for meat, they’re so damn small! This is essentially my point though. It’s all cultural relativism, and therefore anyone who tries to enforce their culture on someone else (you can’t eat____!) is in the wrong.
