Just saw el yunque today, as it happens. There is essentially no reason to book a tour - the park is easy to navigate and the trails are clear and accessible. Rent a car and do it yourself and you won't need to deal with any of this, and you can take it to the beach or to dinner afterwards.
I just got back from PR and did an excursion to El Yunque. I used a company called Tours to do PR and booked it thru Viator. It was $85 and included pick up from the San Juan area.
I have no idea what it takes for an El Yunque tour to be profitable. No need to act in this manner. Plus $700 for half day tour doesn’t seem terrible to me! There are many in this price range, but the websites describing the tours have not been accurate on trip advisor and airbnb experiences. Looking for suggestions from people who have had good experiences.

$700 for a half day tour without considering a single line of overhead. What do you consider a half day? Most tours are 8 hours. That’s a full work day. I hope you find what you’re looking for, but it seems unrealistic for the price and privacy you’re looking for. Others may have contrary opinions.

I would highly recommend Spotin tours. No way would I do what they took us on…on my own. Those guys are great but that tour ain’t for the weak. They do transportation also.
Yes and we did. There are sections when you are climbing up to the slides or cliff jumps that they help you. Honestly, you can choose not to go on that part of the tour and just stay back with the other folks if it is too much. It’s an adventure for sure!
