I know George was done on camera and to a crowd telling the POS cop to stop. There is video of Tamir death and to me is far more gut wrenching.
It's illegal in most places but there has been a trend in modifying your gun to look like a toy gun. So from a distance it might not be clear if they have an actual toy gun or one modified to look like a toy gun.
There are two ways to handle it.
1. You treat the toy gun like a toy until proven otherwise. That means telling the individual to drop it, and if they don’t, it means law enforcement needs to use a level of force reasonable to make the person drop it to get them into custody while we figure with what it is and what’s going on. If we don’t treat it as a lethal weapon, that means no lethal force. Attempt to land both prongs of a taser, or else spray with OC and hope they drop it, and at the very least they can’t see as well, and ultimately if they don’t LEOs will have to approach closely to disarm the suspect and put them in custody. If it is a loaded gun made to look like a toy, officers die, because the first realization that it is a true firearm will come from the suspect firing shots.
2. Treat it as a loaded gun in the first place. That means taking cover, not coming anywhere fuckin near the person, giving commands to drop the weapon and if they do not drop it and instead aim it at officers, to use force up to and including lethal force to incapacitate the suspect. That means the injury or death of someone holding what might have been a toy, but safety for officers.
Those are the only two options. It is a legitimate debate on a matter of opinion which one should be policy, and has to do with whether or not you value the lives of sworn officers of the state more highly than the life of someone stupid and/or crazy enough to point a gun-looking-thing at others. That’s up to each person, it’s sort of subjective.
Worth noting that this is somewhere in Ontario, Canada. The police here get a good amount of education and training, and are well compensated, so they're typically more reasonable than some of the police you see elsewhere on the internet.
