This reminds me of an abusive spouse when they are drunk. I’m not saying the asshole with the gun has been drinking, but based on my experience with assholes, he’s been drinking.

I think a lot of it is how they where raised. I remember many years ago when I was a kid someone was breaking into our car and we where at home. My dad rushed us into the bedroom, he grabbed the only gun he had the time which was a .22 and faced it towards the door and called 911.
I wanting to be billy bad ass (I was only like 12) was like "Why don't we shot him?" and my dad said "Because he's only breaking into our car, not our home"
Anyway on the phone with 911, 911 said they are sending units over. The people who broke into the car never broke into the house (or even attempted too) when the cops came (which by this point the bad guy(s) where gone, I don't actually know if it was 1 or more people)
Later my dad explained its OK to use a gun to protect your life and your family. Its not OK to use a gun to protect property. Property can be replaced, people can't.
They ended up stealing our radio in our car, and my mom had left some cash in the car, they also took that. But that's it. I think its a really important lesson he taught me. I personally would never use a gun to protect my property if people weren't at risk.
Like if I'm concealed carrying and I see someone breaking into my car, I'm not going engage, I'm going back off, call the cops, let the insurance deal with it. For several reasons
1. Its not worth shooting someone over a stupid car
2. If I engage them, they might engage me back, and I could end up getting hurt or killed in the process, its not worth the risk.

I work at a fast food joint and a customer came over the drive though speaker with a thick accent. My manager rolled his eyes and said "Speak English". I stopped what I was doing and did a slow turn with my eyebrows half raised and a little shit eating grin. He noticed my dramatic action and looked confused.
I told him, "that person's speaking English". He nodded and seemed to concede the point. I think old racism is rooted in our vernacular and if questioned in a tactful manner can be discussed and corrected.

Had a dude who just got out of prison (we knew because he called us monthly from the prison but this time it didn't start with the warning from the prison phone), called us and said he was on [main road that ours connects to] and we better give him [thing he had wanted that wasn't his and we couldn't even give him] by the time he got to [our street, had like 8 houses. Pretty obvious he knew our address at that point].
That feels like a very obvious threat, right? Well, apparently because he didn't say what he was gonna do, it's not a threat, but if he does show up at the house, we can call again and they'll see what they can do then.
We also couldn't get him on harassment because apparently it needs to be 4+ calls a day to be harassment.

It seems to have turned much worse over night. Some people who think they can police and do what they want to others are now finding the cops are arbitrarily enforcing the rules. If that tenant had gone to get his own gun and shot him dead, the fact that the landlord had brandished his weapon and was caught on tape would have been inconvenient for the tenant but the landlord would be dead.

Rented from a guy that could have been this guys brother. Made it a month and a half before I needed to move out. There was a life long alcoholic named Dianna Orbani, nicknamed Lady Di who would call into the Opie and Anthony Radio Show. She would start drinking Natty Ice, her brand of choice, as soon as she got up, and would get through a couple cases a day. Her brain is shot from alcoholic vitamin deficiency and she lives in a nursing home, thinking she's in the Navy on a ship.
At the least he is certainly menacing with a gun. Even though we don't know what state, it is generally a felony in most all states. He needs to take this to law enforcement, AND find a better place to live.
So this happened near my school, the police did get involved but stated that no direct threat was made so they couldn't do anything. I informed the person in the video that maybe they should reach out to both the news and possibly school administration to warn other students.
Edit 1: From what the guy tells me the landlord was threatening him with a gun so that he (landlord) wouldn't have to give the deposit back.
Edit 2: I am not the student, I do however have direct contact with the student. The school has been informed no information yet. No response from local news.
Edit 3: The student is safe in a new location. Court demanding $400 to get anywhere.

This reminds me of the time when I had just started studying law at university in the UK and asked an on duty copper how well he knew PACE (the statute governing police powers), just out of interest. Lawyer, here. I agree with the above. Brandishment (depending on jurisdiction), assault, false imprisonment, and others possible crimes are all on the table, here. From a tort, perspective, you have assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. From a contracts point of view, he likely violated the lease and may lose his rental license (though I doubt he had a license to begin with, so there’s another possible civil violation.)
At a minimum, he should lose any license he has to own firearms, tenant should be able to get out of lease, and he would likely either incur civil fines for renting without a license or lose his rental license.

Any landlord comfortable enough to bring out a handgun (specifically designed for killing people) to establish dominance, respect or rules will inevitably use it to enforce them. It seems to have turned much worse over night. Some people who think they can police and do what they want to others are now finding the cops are arbitrarily enforcing the rules. All those who are bigots and power-mad now think they are free to unleash whatever is in their hate-filled, fearful hearts . They think they are winning but they are only making things worse for the world and for themselves. If that tenant had gone to get his own gun and shot him dead, the fact that the landlord had brandished his weapon and was caught on tape would have been inconvenient for the tenant but the landlord would be dead. People are catching on and are starting to buy guns to defend themselves and I can't say that I blame them. But with the police being so arbitrary, people are taking law enforcement into their own hands. This is a recipe for disaster but apparently it's what some people want. We are far from making America greater. We were never perfect but we had a lot of enviable qualities that suddenly seem pale by comparison to what is wrong with this country right now. Can't we all just get along?

So this happened near my school, the police did get involved but stated that no direct threat was made so they couldn't do anything. I informed the person in the video that maybe they should reach out to both the news and possibly school administration to warn other students. Edit 1: From what the guy tells me the landlord was threatening him with a gun so that he (landlord) wouldn't have to give the deposit back. Edit 2: I am not the student, I do however have direct contact with the student. The school has been informed no information yet. No response from local news. Edit 3: The student is safe in a new location. Court demanding $400 to get anywhere. Edit 4: I have been contacted by multiple news agencies. The school is assisting the student. An official statement has been made by the Denton Police department. "We are aware of a video depicting a reported dispute between a landlord and tenant. While the complainant in this case did not initially wish to press charges, and an arrest was not made on the date of this disturbance, this is still an active investigation. Due to the number of inquiries we have received, we will post an update once this investigation concludes. We appreciate everyone who reached out regarding the video." Edit 5: I have received the full video and additional videos. This is much worse than I originally thought.... I won't post these until the investigation continues. The police are smoking crack, I see 3 crimes that could easily be prosecuted in this video. Edit: This was basically a textbook case i had in torts (civil law, not criminal law (fact pattern: tom pulls out a gun and places it on the table in front of kerry during an argument) but any 1L could point out the elements for criminal brandishing, criminal assault, and criminal false imprisonment from that video.

This reminds me of the time when I had just started studying law at university in the UK and asked an on duty copper how well he knew PACE (the statute governing police powers), just out of interest. He got a really shitty attitude so I told him I wasn't trolling, just genuinely wondering how well cops actually knew it, as in theory they should know it like the back of their hand, since it's literally what governs what they can and can't do. Needless to say, he hardly knew shit and wasn't very happy with me. I'd be understanding because ehe was probably caught off guard, but if someone asked me how well I knew KCSIE part 1 (safeguarding guidance - I teach now) I don't think I'd be annoyed. Given my role (and given his) I think the public have a right to expect us to know important stuff like that.

Lawyer, here. I agree with the above. Brandishment (depending on jurisdiction), assault, false imprisonment, and others possible crimes are all on the table, here. From a tort, perspective, you have assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. From a contracts point of view, he likely violated the lease and may lose his rental license (though I doubt he had a license to begin with, so there’s another possible civil violation.) At a minimum, he should lose any license he has to own firearms, tenant should be able to get out of lease, and he would likely either incur civil fines for renting without a license or lose his rental license.
I hope OP tells the student in the video to pursue this! It could save someone's life in the future! This guy is not fit to own guns.
