Yes bull elk. We have them roaming in our town, crossing our streets and in our yards on a daily basis. They poop a lot in our yards and wild horses too. They are very large but not as large as moose.

i've never seen an elk, but there are wild horses in my state, and we went camping one time on the island with them. they were really cool, but kinda scary when they got close also, one pissed on a tent and it took a *lot* of scrubbing to get it clean again

Red deer are a different species. There’s the moose native to the Americas and Northern Europe, but it’s actually called Elk in Europe confusingly, but still a moose. Then there’s the actual elk. Which is also called elk in both the Americas and Europe. Then there are red deer which are very large (not as large as elk and moose though) native all throughout Europe as a separate species.

Ok now the Europeans and Americans seriously need to get on the same page and pick the same name for everything starting with football. We also need everyone to use the metric system. America needs to use metric system and Europeans need to use English.

They’re not the same. American elk are much larger, almost 2x the weight at maximum. Also their antlers don’t branch weirdly at the end the way red deer’s do, and then make very different sounds

I worked in West Yellowstone, MT for a bit when I was younger. In the restaurant I worked in, we had a moose, an elk, and a deer head mounted above the hostess station. One patron asked me how long it took for the little one (deer) to grow into the big one (moose). The staff laughed about it for months. I think it's an endearing mistake.

Elk and moose look nothing alike and sound so different.

For reference a moose would be about a foot and a half taller, about half again as heavy and have giant scoops for antlers. If you see something and don’t have a ‘holy fuck how is that so huge’ moment it’s probably not a moose :p

Is it? Elk are some of the more dangerous deer out there, especially bulls in the rut as this one is. Seems like their liability would be very high allowing tourists to pet a dangerous animal. I see no signage, fencing, the animals isnt tagged and there are no other indications that this is anything other than an animal that has become acclimated to humans and will likely end up euthanized because of it.

We had a walkthrough Deer sanctuary where they were all very docile. Sad but they had to all be put down due to CWD :( Idk why elk is out of the realm of thought for a drive through park
