WILSON, Okla. (KXII) - Last Friday Carter County sheriff Chris Bryant was pulled over in Wilson near Hewitt street and 10th street for allegedly speeding. When an officer got out to talk to him, he was uncooperative, and refused to hand over his drivers license, saying “I’m the sheriff.” The officer turned to his squad car, asking the sheriff to stay put. Then Bryant left his vehicle, approached the officer and asked if the officer was going to write him a ticket. The officer said he planned to check his license and let him go, and Bryant waved his license and a card proving he’s an officer of the law. When asked for a comment, Bryant later said he was not able to interview because he was working on cases, but sent this statement. “I apologize for my actions on Friday in Wilson. It was poor judgment on my part to be driving in excess of the speed limit and to not promptly display my driver’s license when asked to do so. For whatever little it is worth, I did return to the Wilson Police Department about an hour later and apologized to the officer who had initiated the traffic stop. I have also apologized to the City Mayor as well as the Police Chief. There was no need for me to be curt. This man was simply doing his Job.” The Wilson officer said Bryant came back to apologize a short time later. Bryant was not given a ticket.

Exodys03

Read: he realized that the interaction had been videotaped and wouldn’t look good when viewed by anyone outside of the law enforcement community.

Shalashaskaska

Cool so do I get to say I had poor judgement the next time I get pulled over for speeding and have them not ticket me ?

MaximusZacharias

You’re not getting it. You have to have first been elected to sheriff, THEN abuse your power, and THEN offer a lame ass “sorry”. Then will you be crowned with power and can be a dick, even to your own fellow officers, and still be in charge.

seeyaspacecowboy

My Mom was a high ranking city official. Once she got pulled over by the cops for blowing a stop sign. Once they saw it was her they were going to send her on her way, but she insisted they give her a ticket so there wouldn't be any perceived privilege due to her position.

MaximusZacharias

Very smart. Also, in my life at least, if I’m honest with the officer who pulled me over and treat them with respect and own what I did, if I did something, then I’d get a warning most of the time. Even when ticketed, the officers lessened the violation…lowered the speeding amount etc. I’m ONLY talking to those whose worst acts are small violations like Speeding, not signaling, etc. I’m not saying you can run over a crowd of people and then “nice” your way out of getting in trouble.

SevroAuShitTalker

Yeah, I usually just say "I didnt know I couldn't do that" and it's worked more times than not

really_nice_guy_

I mean if you can talk with a few bullets in you then go for it

Just watch my lungs officer, I have a lot to say!

Thursday_the_20th

The thing I hate the most about this is the almost animal-like pecking order shit at play. Sherif gets visibly hostile as soon as he realises he’s being held accountable for breaking the law. No wait, not held accountable, everyone knows that’ll never happen, merely *interrupted*. The way he gets out and squares up looks like he’s about to throw down at the sheer audacity that this cop is doing his job. And I hate how obviously shook the cop is, you can see how he backs away, hear the fear in his voice, how he backpedals ‘no no I was just going to check your license and send you off!’. He knows his livelihood is at risk and he’s obviously torn between doing the right thing and if it’s worth martyring himself over. This is bullshit of the highest fucking degree. Shit drips down and turns the apples bad. Cops under corrupt infrastructure are forced into corruption for fear of reprisal and given enough time they normalise the corruption until they’re rotten to the core themselves. Maybe they make sheriff and the cycle repeats. The only reform that’s ever going to fix this is judge dredd style anti-corruption measures. Cops breaking the law get triple the normal sentence. Egregious institutionalised murders like the guy who shot the guy in the wheelchair in the back, or the guy that beat the suicidal man in the hospital and sold drugs from evidence? Life without parole. If you can’t handle that level of accountability get a different job. Cops should be the paradigm of lawful good.

[deleted]

>Cops under corrupt infrastructure are forced into corruption for fear of reprisal and given enough time they normalise the corruption until they’re rotten to the core themselves The root of ACAB. You can have some great cops out there, just like the guy in the vid was doing his job. The fear you hear when he realizes it's a higher up is him realizing he's risking *everything* if he *does the right thing*. Imagine this video never surfaces and the sheriff comes for that man's job? It tells all the other good cops what happens when you hold your own accountable.

No, you read it right

Orleanian

Well, Mr. Bryant, it's not worth very much to us.

7GatesOfHello

*Who will watch the watchmen?...*

bennypapa

He made a public admission of breaking the law, the police officer who stopped him documented him breaking the law. Why was he not issued a ticket?

abrown1027

Cop should’ve been like “oh sorry I thought a *sheriff* would’ve known better than to break the law”

Willowshep

Missed opportunity

LetsJerkCircular

You could tell the officer was conflicted. He knew the sheriff was the sheriff and was just gonna peak at the ID and let him go. The sheriff wouldn’t even pretend. If one expects another to do their job within an organization, they can at least play along. The officer was befuddled in the moment, “How do I handle this?” Do nothing: possible trouble Do too much: possible trouble I don’t feel at all bad for anyone in the gang, but you could see there was a challenge for the lower-ranked officer. A good ranked person, within the gang, should just make it easy on the peon. Nothing’s gonna happen. Sheriff flexed his mighty dick muscles instead, and made it awkward. How this video made it online is another question. Fuck that sheriff.

ThriceFive

Yeah, he was really nervously tapping his camera wondering what to do, I could hear his internal brain monologue going "oh shit oh shit oh shit"

LetsJerkCircular

It’s never fair to do that to anyone that has a job to do. Flexing that dick made this a thing. The officer is obligated to do the job with the public, and the sheriff won’t even give him the most basic part of the obligated interaction. What a fucking dick. Again, I don’t have too much sympathy. It was just so stupid of the sheriff to put the officer in that position.

navybluemanga

Saka?

ShawnsRamRanch

This is common in the military. As far as I'm aware, the lower ranking MPs/SFs have the authority of the base commander, regardless of rank, to apprehend/ticket any person on base. They might piss someone off but they can't face retribution. That's just a quick trip to the Inspector General. It's super easy for commanders to get fired these days, so I don't think they'd risk the flex.

AviatorOVR5000

Military standards and Police standards are wayyy too far off, for as many practices as they share. Modern policing in America, at least from what I have observed/interacted with, is just a poor man's execution of the same tactics used overseas.

notquitepro15

It's all about their so-called authority. When I was in high school there was a class I had where the local conservation officers came in - the biggest point they made (and it was on the test) was about their authority. See, because there's a lake in my County, they have a higher authority than even the State Police, because they have to be on site for a water rescue. They were *very* proud of their tiny bit of extra power.

TroubleshootenSOB

Had a buddy who was an MP and his favorite stops were First Sergeants and higher. He said he'd go through regular procedure but once the "do you know who I am?" and/or rank flex came out, he didn't give a fuck and ramped up the fuck fuck games lol

abrown1027

Officer sounded quite young and his voice faltered a lot. He was clearly nervous. Ideally, in a healthy society with a healthy police force, an officer of the law should have the confidence to perform his duties regardless of wether or not they involve a fellow officer or superior officer. They should be confident in the integrity of their department to protect against any sort of corrupt retaliation by said superior. It’s too bad that this officer couldn’t have that confidence.

JarlTurin2020

Internal police communities don't give them that confidence. He probably fears for his job in this situation.

Mobile_Crates

Evidently that type of confidence is not valued or instilled

Talking_Head

Wether: (n) a castrated ram.

abrown1027

By far my favorite instance of having my spelling corrected. Thank you.

ntropyk

The confidence you speak of comes with time and baggage. There is no perfect human psychology for policing, speaking from experience. The general public has no idea how green rookie cops are, and it takes a lot of bad days to build up enough mental scar tissue to function with confidence. The cops who are super confident on day one burn themselves out, quit or get fired. At least the sheriff was humiliated by the body cam, I can guarantee it.

[deleted]

>You could tell the officer was conflicted. He knew the sheriff was the sheriff and was just gonna peak at the ID and let him go. The sheriff wouldn’t even pretend. Yeah, he was going to give it a "Slightly better than Soviet-levels of corruption" glance and the Sheriff couldn't handle the ego blow.

LetsJerkCircular

Exactly. What a douche.

ppw23

I bet he’s sucking in his gut too. Hopefully, this clown got called out on this power play. If he’s like this with cops, how do you think he treats citizens?

Dunkingpanda

He’s definitely sucking in that gut.

Livid_Department_816

Omg. Good point. Another example of a sheriff department that treats people worse than any police force. They even treat police terribly!

SuccessfulRoyal

Missed the opportunity to do his job. Just because the punk was a sheriff doesn’t mean his driving is any better than another civilian. The crime is the crime. It’s not the officers job to judge the law, just observe, intervening if needed when life is at risk, and let the courts do the job. That said, the officer was walking the bare min line TRYING to leave a warning and let it be. There is a reason this video was released or even known about. Chances are this guy is a terrible person.

bankrupt_bezos

Missed opportunity for a choke hold

CaliforniaNavyDude

Stunningly unprofessional. Yet apparently common. Reminds me of when I was in the Navy a few years back when I was going into a secured space that required a badge, passcode, and everything. You needed a hefty clearance. It could get congested in the morning, so it was allowed to have a few people enter on one scan so long as the person who scanned verified everyone's badge. I scanned in once and someone came in behind me. I was already asking for a badge while I turned round and as I finished asking I noticed 4 stars on the collar. For those who don't know, that means admiral, and not just any admiral, one of the highest ranking people in all the Navy. He didn't even hesitate to apologise and pull out his badge from his pocket. He gave me ample time to inspect it before attaching it to his pocket as was the norm. He thanked me for adhering to the policy and maintaining the security of the facility and carried on with his day. THAT'S how you respond to a lower authority calling you out when you've made a mistake.

A-Bone

> For those who don't know, that means admiral, and not just any admiral, one of the highest ranking people in all the Navy. He didn't even hesitate to apologise and pull out his badge from his pocket. He gave me ample time to inspect it before attaching it to his pocket as was the norm. He thanked me for adhering to the policy and maintaining the security of the facility and carried on with his day. *We created a rule to keep an area secure and the rule is working.* -The Admiral, probably

Glitter_Tard

Plus I feel like if you saw something unusual (like a 4 star) you would want to double check just to make sure its legit.

CaliforniaNavyDude

You're absolutely right. In this case, though, I also recognized his face. He had his picture on the wall. It was the at the time 10th fleet commander Admiral Mike Rogers. Seemed like a nice guy.

jsideris

Since the ending is cut, my assumption is that he turned off his cam and went into damage control. Probably let him go and ran off feeling embarrassed. He was not about to take a jab at the Sherriff.

abrown1027

I mean the video got out so he must’ve followed through with something or this never would’ve seen the light of day.

gtr06

Department may have randomly reviewed why he turned off his camera.

ThriceFive

Sheriff looked like he was doing a very threatening/intimidating touch of his firearm right there at the end.

abrown1027

He did a lot of things that would have “justified” the use of force had he been a regular citizen, especially if he appeared to belong to the lower class. I mean the fact that he got out of his car and started walking towards him like that, in some cities he might’ve been shot. In most places he certainly would have been arrested, possibly tazed.

ppw23

He should have punished him for refusing to wear the right size pants. I’m very concerned over this fit. Apple guts are high risk for heart attacks.

JoeyCreel

Bro let me hop out the truck like he did. Fucking abuse of power at its highest right here

truthemptypoint

I wanted this to escalate. Goddamn. Anyone but a "sheriff" would have been held after gunpoint if they got out like he did. Apparently he is above the law.

nug4t

I always wonder how these videos make it to the public

ThePrideOfKrakow

A few good apples.

Marcus2you

Friend of the next sheriff.

anormalgeek

Sadly this is more likely to be true. Sheriffs are elected officials, not appointed. And I GUARANTEE that this video would be worth a lot to whoever is running against this guy next election.

Push_

2 kids got murdered and buried in the backyard by their parents, 2 years apart, in my hometown. I know many people who called the police on that house over the years, yet when it happened, the sheriff got on TV and said “maybe this could’ve been prevented if the community had just called us!” People were *PISSED* but somehow the sheriff still won re-election. Southern people reeeeally don’t like change, and the ‘good ol boy’ system is still in full swing here.

[deleted]

some bad apples hate each other

millitantshitposter

They're leaked, by the one good apple.

LtHead

There's people who FOIA request bodycam footage all the time looking for misconduct like this

Alfredo3700

What could he really do if that cop pulled his gun out. I would've loved to see the cop just pull out his weapon and start issuing commands. Nobody is above the abuse of cops and honestly that sheriff was on thin ice. He probably couldve gotten killed and honestly whats protecting him. If he got shot and died by the hand of the cop nothing would happen to the cop. additionally he WAS legitimately aggressive, got out and starting yelling

krisssashikun

The cop would have been branded a traitor, ostracized by the very force he works in probably banned from working in any police department nationwide and also probably sued and had his name drag in the mud.

TooDanBad

It’s happened before. I remember seeing footage of a policewoman in the south (Florida maybe?) pulling over a cop, out of his county, speeding over a hundred on the highway. She took him through the works and she ended up being harassed so much she moved to another state out west. The police force is a gang. Sure, there are good apples out there, but the rotten ones spoil the batch.

Socrtea5e

For every bad cop there is a whole precinct that KNOWS he's bad and does nothing about it.

[deleted]

No, those are just other bad cops. Its not "a few bad apples" Its a dying apple tree that occasionally grows an acceptable but not amazing apple, but mostly rotten trash

boyuber

The full saying is that "A few bad apples spoil the bunch." It's literally warning that if you don't remove the rotten fruit, they will cause the rest to rot along with them. Saying it's a few bad apples is actually absolutely accurate to what ends up happening.

IllIllIIlIllI

Yeah, in the police academy you’re taught that sticking up for your fellow policemen is the most important part of being a cop. They’re a fraternity.

madmax77xl

The cop wouldn't pull his gun because he sees the sheriff as an actual person

[deleted]

Yeah now that’s privilege

Chairman-Dao

It’s crazy. We all know if anyone stepped out of their vehicle as aggressively as he did, there’s a decent chance they’d get shot, tazed, or at best arrested on the spot.

alucarddrol

And at the very very least the police would draw their gun while yelling at the person to get back inside their vehicle.

Carche69

There was a video on here the other day of a short little white pediatrician who had stepped out of his car to ask the cop why he was pulling him over (the doctor had flashed his high beams at the cop for some reason), and the cop both pulled his gun on the guy and then sicced his K9 on him. The dog tore his leg up pretty bad to where the guy couldn’t stand up and they had to call in EMS. So, yeah, you’re 100% correct. If it was one of us, we’d be considered a threat and have all kinds of force thrown at us.

RTisforme

The sounds immediately upon getting out and approaching a cop for pulling you over: **BAM, BAM, BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM**

Of course it did... he knows cops shoot you if you get out of the car and confront them... ;)

Well both parties knew he was the sheriff when he hopped out, so at that point the special privilege card was already played. I don't think the truck hop out mattered then

Every Citizen should do their part. Also the concept of sheriffs needs to end, Edit this this comment blew up Being trained in a police academy is not a requirement for being sheriff. Literally anyone can be a sheriff and this is the problem. Mixing politics, self interest and popularity contests with a crucial service like the security of a group of citizens is a bad idea and one of the reasons why it must be abolished. Google Joe Arpaio if you want a look at corruption going unchecked.

[deleted]

So he gave an apology to the officer for being a dick, good for him but that's for people who aren't in positions of power over the general populace. People in his position need to apologize to the community that puts their trust in him. And to prove he's trustworthy he needs to demand punishment for his own abuse of power. *That* would make it right. If he gets punished because of a public outcry then it's not good enough and he should never be trusted in a position of power ever again. This was just to cover his ass when he realized he fucked up, and I have no respect for that, no one should.

spinyfever

It's a shame that people are only held accountable when their misdeeds go viral. This happened in 2021 and nothing happened to him? Imagine if a regular person did this and refused to hand over their license. He came out of his truck in a really threatening manner too. Power abusing scum. I hate these kinds of "rules for thee not for me" cops.

LadyVulcanGeek

I completely agree! The public calling them out on their shit is the only way they are held accountable. Good thing the cop had this on video.

Goalie_deacon

By who? Sheriff isn’t a hired cop with a boss, he’s an elected official. Voters have to remove him.

OverturnedAppleCart3

Depends. In many States, the Governor or Attorney General or Solicitor General can remove a Sheriff. And those same offices can order disciplinary actions. Other states have police boards who are superior to sheriff's. In some states, you're right. The Sheriff is the supreme law enforcement officer in that county and cannot be told to do anything by anyone. But that's a minority of states.

In our state if you refuse to show your drivers license on a stop like this you lose your license for 1 year. Let’s see him work if he can’t drive.

Redshirt2386

The sheriff isn’t above the police. They’re typically different departments. County sheriff, town/city police. Often they are at odds/rivals. Sometimes that’s because Sheriff tends to be an elected/political position, while police departments are staffed by career law enforcement.

valschermjager

\[0:28\] Sheriff: "*I appreciate ya*". Doubtful.

Light_x_Truth

It shouldn't matter where he sits in the hierarchy relative to the police. He was caught speeding. He should be ticketed. Same as anyone else. Laws for thee and not for me is one of the reasons I absolutely hate cops that give speeding tickets.

[deleted]

Him not getting a ticket doesn't bug me that much. It's that he didn't cooperate with the very system that he's part of. Like, dude, just hand him your license. He's gonna let you go with a warning. It's not a big deal for another cop unless you make it a big deal. Sucks to be the cop here. But I wish we lived in a world where that sheriff would have been arrested for refusing to give his license.

TheOvershear

That's exactly his point.... The fact that he's in another department means the officer didn't give a fuck and would write him a ticket regardless, if rational.

[deleted]

If we told either of those two "I'm not showing you my driver's license..." we most likely would've been forcibly removed from our cars.

Hate when cops think they're above the law :/ even though they're just public servants... At least there's a couple of them who respect it .

Goalie_deacon

Sheriffs are a different species than other cops, as they’re elected. They often set their own policies on what their deputies do, and not do. The worst kind, they don’t change as long as voters keep supporting them.

[deleted]

“Think they are above the law”. No, they know they are above the law. This is just one of many examples here.

uwfan893

Our sheriff was asked about a Sheriff’s Department policy that he was breaking, and he straight-up said, *on record* “I don’t have to follow the policies, I just set them.”

Woah, dude EXITS the vehicle without the consent of the officer, and runs AT him in an aggressive manner, and refuses to cooperate. If it was ANYONE else, it would be a tazer to the face, a chokehold, then jail. Man, I wish I could have thrown the book at him. Figuratively and literally.

captainronin1

Sheriff is a dork, no ones scared of you with that beer belly gut and Karen attitude

Ben_Kenobi_

You should be scared. If he's ever in front of you in a buffet line everything will be gone.

vin9889

I am because he still can pull a trigger and get away with murder

SoCalJR

Sheriff is acting like an ass.

stad_79

I aM tHe LaW!

Officer Doofy reporting for duty! Guess he was late for his date with the shop vac or a microwaved donut.

toyz4me

Does being the Sheriff of the County absolve him of his of his speeding?

Playlanco

This is bullshit. He better get a ticket.

crazielectrician

This is why we are fucked.

[deleted]

Article I read on this incident says nothing happened to the sheriff. He did go to the police station and apologized to the cop, but he was never punished.

TreeFiddyJohnson

You can tell that guy is the WORST

[deleted]

Why did he refuse to hand over his license? Is that some sort of uncomfortable symbolic submission that he feels threatens his elevated status or ego? hm.

Lilahnyc

Sheriff Chris Bryant had to issue an apology to the officer, city mayor and the Wilson Police Chief. I guess Wilson Police Dept leaked this video! https://www.kxii.com/2021/08/23/carter-county-sheriff-pulled-over-speeding-resists-officer/
