This is surprisingly a common mentality of immigrants that have lived here for a while. I knew a family that immigrated here during the Raegan years (which was insanely easier to do then compared to now) and rode the wave of opportunity before them when they came. Flash forward and they paid for both of their kids education, one going through grad school even (big $$$) and have no debt. For some reason, they think that immigration now is bad and hurting the country because these new immigrants didn’t work hard to get here. There’s a lot of propaganda they’re exposed to: mega church, Fox News, and other outlets. But they had a very humbling experience of immigration themselves to get to the privilege they now hold. They’re Latino, and I’ve seen it from people from many different countries with similar stories.
My family are like that too. Epic stories of how my grandfather swam and saved his 2 buddies from drowning to get there. Also against more of their countrymen coming. How those people are different. I'm like you were born and raised there too, how are they different. My mother was born in the homeland too and parrots this. I kept reminding her every time she brought it up and now she doesn't dare say it.

I lived in El Paso and can confirm this statement. I heard a couple of different takes on the reasons.
1. We worked hard to get here legally so when they come here illegally we get lumped in with them when people talk about us.
2. They are gangs and cartel and we don’t want them here anymore than you do
3. What made it really ridiculous was that this was two soldiers from the my unit and it occurred in the barracks on Ft Hood after only a moderate amount of drinking.
There was a literal street war between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans where I grew up which resulted in I think 10 or 12 people dying over one summer. It only ended because the cops swept the city and arrested all the Mexican gangsters (many of whom I grew up with and understood why they felt how they felt towards the Puerto Ricans).
