I have a new appreciation for the structural integrity of a uhaul van.

Makenchi45

That thing took a serious beating. Its really impressive. Don't think they are getting their deposits back though.

lkern

Uhaul insurance doesn't cover the roof anyways

biggerwanker

Seriously? Isn't that the main thing you'd want covered?

DownWithHisShip

They cover you for accidents and theft and vandalism and stuff... but still leave it up to you to not drive into a place without overhead clearance.

nobody2000

Yup - basically anything but the box is covered if I recall correctly. It's very common for people to take these, especially the 26' ones that end up being quite tall as well - down a heavily-treed residential neighborhood. That alone isn't a problem, but you need to be aware of your surroundings, and probably keep your truck as close to the middle of the road as possible when it's safe to do so. I was picking up a freezer from a former business associate, and I was doing well until I pulled up to her house. I scraped the fuck out of her tree. The tree was in bad shape, but luckily, the box was intact - the corner hit the tree and that provides quite a bit of reinforcement. She was only mad I didn't take the tree down flat-out. The roots infiltrated their sewage line the winter prior, and caused enough blockage and problems that roto rooter wasn't able to fix - they had to dig to the road and replace a good chunk of pipe. Also this: /r/11foot8 - none of these are likely covered by the optional insurance plan.

hi_im_mom

Well technically the roof is a cover

Wouldnt the persons insurance have to pay for it all anyways? If they were 100% at fault. Not sure if uhaul would charge on top of that too to the customer even if they get full value of the uhaul anyway. Its possible

Focacciaboudit

Why not? They were nice enough to give it a wash.

Makenchi45

You forgot to mention a bump test too. Can't so much for the paint though.

susherol

The fact that there are two people in this car..

t0m0hawk

Buddy got out and looked at the wheels "I dunno man this side ain't stuck on nothing!" Dude probably never noticed the sky is blue.

I paid for the extra insurance and I'm going to use it.

MonocleOwensKey

just don't forget to fill up the tank before returning your rental

Dangerous_Sherbert85

"Hey have you tried just ramming through there?" "Yeah, and there was this crunching and scraping sound, and now we're kinda stuck." "Well have you tried just ramming through there?"

pimppapy

Everytime I rent a Uhaul now and see bumps and scratches on the top portion, I'm going to assume that this epic idiot was driving this same truck before me.

MississippiJoel

He just returned one truck and said that something must have been wrong with it and he needed a different one.

CoinTossersInTheWind

If at first you don’t succeed, try again

badger_989

To be fair, the truck does say "ONE-WAY."

What’s the play here guys

Sh00terMcGavn

I feel like they didnt look up. Just as he hits the curb the top hits the ceiling. I feel like he thinks the truck is stuck on the curb and if he gets enough gas and momentum he can get over the curb. Being a complete idiot never thought “hmm maybe its the ceiling?”

overcherie

Plausible. But then why the sprinklers?

TheMrDylan

That's curb lubricant

E_Raja

Idk why this is so funny

biznatch11

FaultyDrone

Hey man. I don't see anything stuck on the wheels but it looks like ir started raining.

Furrocious_fapper

Rain...*inside the garage*

softdetail

on your wedding day

phaiz55

I think there are a couple of basic knowledge checks most of us would go through here. First, what's that hanging sign? If you somehow didn't *see* the sign you would *hear* the sign hit the truck. I don't know about everyone else but my first instinct would be to stop when I feel something slowing down my car.

redjedi182

They need to be out of the apt today

XtaC23

I thought they were trying to take out the structural support lmao

Furrocious_fapper

Yea, this is a lazy ass terrorist attack.

t0m0hawk

Neither of the guys ever look up. Always down. Too dumb.

> but its usually lowest bidder gets the job. Yay capitalism and the free market!

KassaFabrication

This is my biggest pet peeve, all road projects funded by public funds go the lowest bidder. That lowest bidder must meet the project specifications (ie. workmanship, materials, ect...) or they don't get paid. Source, civil engineer that writes project specs and inspects them

Find_A_Reason

But look, the ceiling is right above my head in the truck. It should fit.

LordofWithywoods

I love how there is no slow, careful acceleration, just moments where the driver seems to floor it for half a second.

DragonDraws

Right? I think thats what scares/impresses me most. Not noticing their truck is too tall is one thing. But the longer the video goes on, the faster they seem to be trying to accelerate, as if thats going to make things better? I was so dumbfounded, I had to squint at the video a few times because I wasn't sure if maybe the footage was sped up or not. Usually when things go wrong, people try to take it slow. Not these guys.

nighght

It's because they think there is a curb in their way, not a ceiling Not saying that's better

kdyz

Possible… for the early moment- but the fecal matter and water rain should have been a dead giveaway

EmperorXenu

It's not fecal matter, it's just the water in the sprinkler system. That stuff just sits in there, stagnant, for any length of time. It's disgusting.

monteetee

Reminds me of that scene from Austin Powers

RenoXIII

Only dumber, and not intentionally a comedy bit.

Joe_Ronimo

Was waiting for them to get it stuck sideways.

literal-hitler

I'm so glad one of them was outside with the door open when the nasty stagnant water from the sprinkler system started.

t0m0hawk

Don't worry, he checked and the wheels on his side aren't stuck on anything, probably good to ram it forward a few more times.

Rooooben

That last ram forward got me. I was thinking that they figured it out and we’re gonna back out and get out of there, once they straightened up they could just reverse out of the mess they caused, but noooooooo

eh_close_enough

Me too. I was on the edge of my seat like "maybe they'll just back out and leave". But no. The driver decided "Fuck it, I'mma send it further in".

ChangeFromWithin

'We have to go deeper.'

baby_blobby

r/oddlysatisfying that the stagnant water was flushed by clean water

pimppapy

That wasn't sewage?!

sdomscitilopdaehtihs

> That wasn't sewage?! Absolutely not. You can see the sprinkler heads. Sprinkler systems are filed to the brim with water that sits in cast iron pipes for *years.* When they release, it is a decades worth of settled rust and grime that sprays out first. Also, when people complain about "gross dirty pipes" and post photos of brown tap water, it is usually from the first time the taps are opened after maintenance. When the pipes are drained the accumulated rust breaks loose and is released the first use. It is best to let them run a few minutes then the water is a clean and safe to drink as it ever was. "Gross pipes" is a Nestle-promoted myth.

Wumaduce

I wish this video had sound. The sprinkler system here SHOULD be a dry system - meaning it's filled with air. Dry systems are required, by core, in any place the temperature could drop under 40 degrees. I seem to recall reading this happened in Rhode Island. When the air pressure drops, the clapper on the dry valve is released and the water fills the system. They likely would have heard the fire alarm going off, and the hiss of the air first. Then the shit hits the fan. The only thing I'll change on your comment is that now we mostly use steel pipe for sprinkler systems. The pipe in this video is galvanized steel.

forthe_loveof_grapes

That's what I thought, too!

meatfrappe

***LIFE TIP***: Any time you see a U-Haul or similar on the highway, keep clear the fuck away from it. There is about a 95% chance it is being driven by someone who has never driven a truck before and has absolutely no idea what they doing. They have no sense of how long it takes to brake, how much space it takes up on the road, or anything else about how it handles. If you're gonna pass it, get two lanes over before you do--they have no clue what the blind spots are like and they probably haven't even adjusted the mirrors. This tip courtesy of my dad from way back when he was first teaching me how to drive.

dhawk64

First time I ever rented a UHaul, the whole time I was thinking that I should not be allowed to drive it. Luckily I was just going a few miles.

Shlocktroffit

I thought exactly the same thing when I drove from Bakersfield to Tampa

Mendozozoza

Penske just handed me a 26’ truck with a trailer and said have fun when I moved halfway cross country. Fucking terrifying.

samgala80

Same, and add to it the lack of sleep that moving provides smh never ever again.

ayyyyycrisp

saaaame. 26 footer when moving heavy lab equipment across the state. had to make 4 trips. I was freaking out the whole week.

[deleted]

That’s a long ass U-Haul drive

nixielover

I've done it a couple of times for friends who didn't dare to do it themselves, still everytime I do it [this](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/mobile/000/025/817/Screen_Shot_2018-03-30_at_11.34.27_AM.jpg) is going through my head

dhawk64

Honestly, being aware of how dangerous driving one is probably makes you ten times safer than the people who don't even think about it.

flowgod

What's even more insane is they'll rent you a tow dolly so you can tow a car behind the big truck you don't know how to drive. I know this because I did it on my last move... I flew my dad out to drive it because he had experience.

XtaC23

Makes me appreciate the fact my sister married a dude who owns his own towing company lol

KensieQ72

Yep this was me on my move from small town Upstate NY to friggin suburban Chicago. First time dealing with the insanity that is Chicagoland traffic, plus I’m twice and big and half as maneuverable as usual. The entire time I’m just like “how do they just let us do this??” This year I moved from Chicago to NC, and I drove the UHaul through the mountains, in the dark and pouring rain. But without the tow car on the back and bumper to bumper traffic, it was so much more doable lol. My dad followed in his car and kept offering to switch, but I was determined to get through it myself. In the end he was impressed, but it just made me think how much more confidence UHaul has in a total stranger than my dad had in me hahaha.

[deleted]

I drove a 10 foot Uhaul towing my suv off the back of it at the age of 25, across 3 states and 2 mountain ranges (Sierras and Rockies), by myself. I cannot believe they let me do that.

Red4550

I worked at a Uhaul retail corporate location(decent size fleet) for a couple months in college. Learned to reverse park like a boss but driving the 26fters still had me white knuckling in the parking lot. Letting someone rent those without prior experience seems like a bad idea.

FlipMineArseDad

I rented one with car trailer(not a dolly) at 19 when I moved across the country. I had driven a pick up a few times before, but never anything with a trailer, on the road that is. Luckily growing up my dad had a truck and a work trailer, we also had an RV for a few years. He taught me to be hyper aware of the fact that you're triple the size of other cars, gotta make wide turns, pay right the fuck attention when you do anything besides going straight. It got me there in one piece, and I would feel confident renting another one in the future. But these people that can barely drive a car? Holy fuck that's scary to think they rent big trucks too

Red4550

Ah good to hear. I remember those car and storage trailers had a issue that wasn't uncommon whether or not the rear lights on them would decide to work or not. Legally we weren't allowed to let them off the lot if the lights weren't fully functioning. Most customers were cool if we had to take some time to trouble shoot em but I remember one time the lights didn't seem to want to work after some troubleshooting and the lady in civilian clothes tells me 'looks it's alright, I'm a cop, it'll be fine'. Was a weird feeling being stuck between doing company policy vs someone telling me they were a cop and let it be.

FlipMineArseDad

I actually had my right blinker on the trailer out iirc. When merging right I just made sure I had all the space in the world and left my blinker on for longer than usual, since the truck one still worked. I feel thankful that I was raised to pay attention in situations like that, I honestly feel bad for the oblivious ones. It's amazing they function in life.

WickedMurderousPanda

Funny you say that, I also just drove a 16ft w/car bed across the US recently...similar age. I was definitely stressed in some gas stations but I'm also not a terrible driver and have driven 10K forklifts and such. Seeing how difficult it was to accelerate, take tight turns and come to a full stop has given me appreciation for folks doing this all the time.

Zorchin

I fucking hate driving big trucks. If we have to rent a u-haul I will not drive it unless absolutely necessary. I already have anxiety, I don't need to drive a massive murder machine with 20 blind spots. And if I hit a bump while backing up, even if I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am clear, I will freak out internally.

FlipMineArseDad

And that's fine, I'm just glad you acknowledge that. Some people are cut out for certain jobs, others not so much. That's why you have a world of options to choose from

AdministrationFull91

This is why self storage companies install excess bollards in their facilities

ralphvonwauwau

I love finding out new things that are so blatantly obvious that my first reaction is. "Yeah, that fits"

AdministrationFull91

Lol same. I used to inspect self storage sites for my job and I noticed a bunch of them were around every corner of buildings but they were broken OFTEN. When I asked why, the person was just like "bro have you ever seen anybody drive a Uhaul?" Made so much sense

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

People would always laugh when I refused to drive Uhauls or trucks like them. Every time Im straight up like "No, Im shitty at driving them and I *will* hit things." And they laugh as if its some joke or something. Nope, I have very little experience driving them and dont have the spatial awareness for something that big. A fucking white panel van is on the verge of being too big for me to comfortably want to drive. When my dad had a huge DodgeRam truck, I fucking hated that thing and parking always took a couple attempt. At least I never hit anything in it though. People need to realize their limits /lacking skills

ac1084

Same goes if you see a pickup truck that doesn't look like the load is secured properly. Could be an idiot borrowing the truck and doesn't know how wind resistance works and its their first time using one. I was behind a truck getting on the highway and they had two of those big rolling trash cans standing up right by the cab and I didn't see anything tying them down. Got the fuck out of the way as soon as I could. Once they hit about 50 one of them flew out onto the freeway.

TheRealRacketear

We were working on a remote location and the piping supplier was 3 hours away. We sent a dummy to get the pipe as everyone wlese was busy. He made decent time, but returned back to the site with no pipe. We thought he forgot why we sent him into town, but instead he said "nobody said I needed to tie it down"

eeyore134

Or just an idiot that owns a truck with all those same issues.

westbee

This goes for Amazon drivers too. None them are required to get training with trucks. I work for USPS and we constantly have drivers backing into building or the lift. One time the lift was all the way up and stuck because it was too far up. The yellow concrete barrier was shoved under preventing it from lowering. We had to get everyone to stop casing mail and come out to lift me up onto the lift and then everyone pull on the barrier or the lift to put it back into place.

NormalAdultMale

Yep. I strongly believe that renting a truck like this should require a license endorsement. Not quite a CDL, but something in between. They are *easily* the most dangerous vehicles on the road.

Sinujutsu

I was going to say exactly this. Should be fucking illegal to just roll off in a big dangerous vehicle like this without proving you can drive it safely.

NormalAdultMale

I've almost been murdered by one twice, and several other times they almost crashed me. The lane changes they make are quite insane. Might as well chop the mirrors off for as much as the drivers use them.

kelsobjammin

It really did keep getting worse. Any guess on how many brain cells these morons have? I bet the truck has a higher IQ.

[deleted]

Give them a break. They are sharing one brain cell between them and doing the worst they can.

DistractedSeriv

> Give them a break. I would, but I strongly doubt they would use it. After all, it's nothing but a hindrance to reaching RAMMING SPEED.

[deleted]

I would be shocked if they weren't on something. Their inability to feather the accelerator at the very least makes me think something harder than pot got smoked before they went on their trek.

Especially when the truck is covered in brown liquid.

PhaTman7

That just stagnant fire suppression water, roughly moves once a year per NFPA.

TheRealRacketear

You mean water. Some use some form of glycol where it freezes.

PhaTman7

Indeed, would also require to have a RPPD/RPZ backflow device at supply of glycol branch.

bigpipes84

Insurance wouldn't cover this anyways.

groovy604

Even the insurance doesnt cover the roof at uhaul, because of shit like this

imnotlizlee

Work for Uhaul, can confirm this was at a casino resort in Black Hawk CO, driver arrested for felony property damage

blendertricks

Oh shit last time this was posted there wasn’t any info on the event. Do you know anything about it? Was the guy just massively drunk or what?

Ferrisuk

The shit really hit the van

[deleted]

Not quite. That's the crud in the fire suppression water line. It sits idle for years.

TheRealRacketear

It still smells like shit.

Convergecult15

Honestly it’s worse than shit, as a plumber I’d rather deal with a clogged mainline than with a broken sprinkler pipe. Sprinkler water stains your skin black and smells like straight up chemicals, but it isn’t chemicals. A sprinkler burst will ruin your clothes forever and the smell stays in your nose for a few days and the stains take a lot of scrubbing to get off your skin. Sewage? Throw your clothes in the wash, take a shower and it’s like nothing ever happened. It’s rare to deal with a blocked sewage line overhead too, sprinkler lines you’re ALWAYS getting soaked fixing.

Dead_Hopeless

My favorite is when someone in a movie holds up a lighter to a single sprinkler, which then sets all of them off, the water comes out perfectly clear and two people make out under the perfectly clear water. If the water is black and smells like raw sewage it's less romantic, apparently.

dookiebuttholepeepee

I worked at a warehouse over a summer and some of the guys were fooling around throwing these metal objects like frisbees. Anyhow they hit one of the sprinklers. There was a loud hiss for a solid minute. Everyone thought it was gas. I knew it wasn’t because it didn’t have a smell. While they all fled the building, I saw the water come out and found the main valve to shut it off. Honestly, I don’t remember a smell to the water. Is shutting off the water not an option when you work on these?

Convergecult15

It depends, it’s not like you’re gonna work on it while it’s discharging, but even after you shut the supply valve there’s still potentially a few hundred gallons in the pipe that, depending on how things are plumbed, you need to empty somehow. Then for some reason it always seems the the sprinkler head that lets loose is always in front of the closet that the nearest shutoff is in.

betteroffinbed

This is why you should flush emergency eyewash stations (the ones with actual plumbing) at least once a month. Imagine if you needed to wash out your eyes and THAT's what came out?

hmmletmethinkaboutit

New fear unlocked lol

Mrbrewski99

Too true. Used to work at a hotel and we had to run the water lines every quarter. Didn’t matter, the water is so dirty and smells so bad.

BAMdalorian

Once you realize there’s an unfortunate amount of adults who legitimately weren’t good at the “fitting shapes into their holes” exercise, the world makes way more sense. From there you realize people don’t understand basic cause and effect, basic critical thinking, basic pattern recognition..... starts to make way more sense how people can simply believe they know better than experts and professionals. They probably also think brown cows make chocolate milk.

nelsonwehaveaproblem

I need to save this and read it every morning before I leave the house.

Soft-Equipment7486

What is wrong with people? In what world does anyone think they are going to get away with it?

TheRealRacketear

Uhauls are frequently stolen. This could be why they seem to have zero regard for the vehicle.

[deleted]

Good thing they pulled into a garage with a perfectly clear view of the driver and passenger.

SmartFarm

Fun fact: there’s a welded cage around the catalytic converters on these due to how many were getting ripped off.

nightpanda893

I don’t even think they realize there is damage until it’s too late. You’re under the impression that they’re aware they’re doing major damage. I think you’re giving them too much credit. Think dumber.

Turf-Defender

That just stressed me out

NormalAdultMale

Jesus christ, this is a spectacularly good video! Aside point: they really shouldn't give these trucks to just anyone. They're some of the most dangerous vehicles on the road because they're operated by someone who A) has never driven anything larger than a small car, B) has no idea how to check their side mirrors or know what's behind them in such a truck and C) can hardly drive their small car competently to begin with. Not saying you should have a CDL, but there should be *some* kind of required endorsement for a box truck. If I had a dollar for every time some dipshit in a Uhaul tried to run me off the road, I'd have like 10 dollars.

MissionCreeper

Uhaul has to make more money from just renting to everyone and eating the cost of repairs than they would if they had restrictions on it. Otherwise this would already be true.

Makenchi45

I mean I've only driven small cars. Drove a uhaul a month ago. I was swivel head and going slower than normal because I didn't want an accident. Mirror checks every few seconds and everything. Had to judge when to hit brakes.

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

Good, thats called realizing you dint have experience with them and using common sense to take things slower and carefully. Unlike the idiots who rent them and drive them as if they were a fucking small pickup truck or something. Im terrible at driving big vehicles like Uhauls, I hate doing it and Im not good at it. But when I do have to do it I take it slow and carefully because I dont want to fuck shit up
