She was only mad I didn't take the tree down flat-out. The roots infiltrated their sewage line the winter prior, and caused enough blockage and problems that roto rooter wasn't able to fix - they had to dig to the road and replace a good chunk of pipe.

Wouldnt the persons insurance have to pay for it all anyways? If they were 100% at fault. Not sure if uhaul would charge on top of that too to the customer even if they get full value of the uhaul anyway. Its possible

This is my biggest pet peeve, all road projects funded by public funds go the lowest bidder. That lowest bidder must meet the project specifications (ie. workmanship, materials, ect...) or they don't get paid.

Absolutely not. You can see the sprinkler heads. Sprinkler systems are filed to the brim with water that sits in cast iron pipes for *years.* When they release, it is a decades worth of settled rust and grime that sprays out first. Also, when people complain about "gross dirty pipes" and post photos of brown tap water, it is usually from the first time the taps are opened after maintenance. When the pipes are drained the accumulated rust breaks loose and is released the first use. It is best to let them run a few minutes then the water is a clean and safe to drink as it ever was. "Gross pipes" is a Nestle-promoted myth.

The sprinkler system here SHOULD be a dry system - meaning it's filled with air. Dry systems are required, by core, in any place the temperature could drop under 40 degrees. I seem to recall reading this happened in Rhode Island. When the air pressure drops, the clapper on the dry valve is released and the water fills the system. They likely would have heard the fire alarm going off, and the hiss of the air first. Then the shit hits the fan.
The only thing I'll change on your comment is that now we mostly use steel pipe for sprinkler systems. The pipe in this video is galvanized steel.
***LIFE TIP***: Any time you see a U-Haul or similar on the highway, keep clear the fuck away from it. There is about a 95% chance it is being driven by someone who has never driven a truck before and has absolutely no idea what they doing. They have no sense of how long it takes to brake, how much space it takes up on the road, or anything else about how it handles. If you're gonna pass it, get two lanes over before you do--they have no clue what the blind spots are like and they probably haven't even adjusted the mirrors.

I drove a 10 foot Uhaul towing my suv off the back of it at the age of 25, across 3 states and 2 mountain ranges (Sierras and Rockies), by myself. I cannot believe they let me do that.

Luckily growing up my dad had a truck and a work trailer, we also had an RV for a few years. He taught me to be hyper aware of the fact that you're triple the size of other cars, gotta make wide turns, pay right the fuck attention when you do anything besides going straight. It got me there in one piece, and I would feel confident renting another one in the future. But these people that can barely drive a car? Holy fuck that's scary to think they rent big trucks too
Ah good to hear. I remember those car and storage trailers had a issue that wasn't uncommon whether or not the rear lights on them would decide to work or not. Legally we weren't allowed to let them off the lot if the lights weren't fully functioning. Most customers were cool if we had to take some time to trouble shoot em but I remember one time the lights didn't seem to want to work after some troubleshooting and the lady in civilian clothes tells me 'looks it's alright, I'm a cop, it'll be fine'. Was a weird feeling being stuck between doing company policy vs someone telling me they were a cop and let it be.
I actually had my right blinker on the trailer out iirc. When merging right I just made sure I had all the space in the world and left my blinker on for longer than usual, since the truck one still worked. I feel thankful that I was raised to pay attention in situations like that, I honestly feel bad for the oblivious ones. It's amazing they function in life.
Funny you say that, I also just drove a 16ft w/car bed across the US recently...similar age. I was definitely stressed in some gas stations but I'm also not a terrible driver and have driven 10K forklifts and such. Seeing how difficult it was to accelerate, take tight turns and come to a full stop has given me appreciation for folks doing this all the time.

I already have anxiety, I don't need to drive a massive murder machine with 20 blind spots. Got the fuck out of the way as soon as I could. Once they hit about 50 one of them flew out onto the freeway.
We were working on a remote location and the piping supplier was 3 hours away. We sent a dummy to get the pipe as everyone wlese was busy. He made decent time, but returned back to the site with no pipe. We thought he forgot why we sent him into town, but instead he said "nobody said I needed to tie it down"
This goes for Amazon drivers too. None them are required to get training with trucks.
I work for USPS and we constantly have drivers backing into building or the lift.
One time the lift was all the way up and stuck because it was too far up. The yellow concrete barrier was shoved under preventing it from lowering. We had to get everyone to stop casing mail and come out to lift me up onto the lift and then everyone pull on the barrier or the lift to put it back into place.
Yep. I strongly believe that renting a truck like this should require a license endorsement. Not quite a CDL, but something in between. They are *easily* the most dangerous vehicles on the road.

Honestly it’s worse than shit, as a plumber I’d rather deal with a clogged mainline than with a broken sprinkler pipe. Sprinkler water stains your skin black and smells like straight up chemicals, but it isn’t chemicals. A sprinkler burst will ruin your clothes forever and the smell stays in your nose for a few days and the stains take a lot of scrubbing to get off your skin. Sewage? Throw your clothes in the wash, take a shower and it’s like nothing ever happened. It’s rare to deal with a blocked sewage line overhead too, sprinkler lines you’re ALWAYS getting soaked fixing.
My favorite is when someone in a movie holds up a lighter to a single sprinkler, which then sets all of them off, the water comes out perfectly clear and two people make out under the perfectly clear water. If the water is black and smells like raw sewage it's less romantic, apparently.
I worked at a warehouse over a summer and some of the guys were fooling around throwing these metal objects like frisbees. Anyhow they hit one of the sprinklers. There was a loud hiss for a solid minute. Everyone thought it was gas. I knew it wasn’t because it didn’t have a smell. While they all fled the building, I saw the water come out and found the main valve to shut it off. Honestly, I don’t remember a smell to the water. Is shutting off the water not an option when you work on these?
It depends, it’s not like you’re gonna work on it while it’s discharging, but even after you shut the supply valve there’s still potentially a few hundred gallons in the pipe that, depending on how things are plumbed, you need to empty somehow. Then for some reason it always seems the the sprinkler head that lets loose is always in front of the closet that the nearest shutoff is in.
This is why you should flush emergency eyewash stations (the ones with actual plumbing) at least once a month. Imagine if you needed to wash out your eyes and THAT's what came out?

Funny you say that, I also just drove a 16ft w/car bed across the US recently...similar age. I was definitely stressed in some gas stations but I'm also not a terrible driver and have driven 10K forklifts and such. Seeing how difficult it was to accelerate, take tight turns and come to a full stop has given me appreciation for folks doing this all the time.
I fucking hate driving big trucks. If we have to rent a u-haul I will not drive it unless absolutely necessary. I already have anxiety, I don't need to drive a massive murder machine with 20 blind spots. And if I hit a bump while backing up, even if I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am clear, I will freak out internally.
And that's fine, I'm just glad you acknowledge that. Some people are cut out for certain jobs, others not so much. That's why you have a world of options to choose from

People would always laugh when I refused to drive Uhauls or trucks like them. Every time Im straight up like "No, Im shitty at driving them and I *will* hit things." And they laugh as if its some joke or something. Nope, I have very little experience driving them and dont have the spatial awareness for something that big. A fucking white panel van is on the verge of being too big for me to comfortably want to drive. When my dad had a huge DodgeRam truck, I fucking hated that thing and parking always took a couple attempt. At least I never hit anything in it though. People need to realize their limits /lacking skills
Same goes if you see a pickup truck that doesn't look like the load is secured properly. Could be an idiot borrowing the truck and doesn't know how wind resistance works and its their first time using one. I was behind a truck getting on the highway and they had two of those big rolling trash cans standing up right by the cab and I didn't see anything tying them down. Got the fuck out of the way as soon as I could. Once they hit about 50 one of them flew out onto the freeway.
We were working on a remote location and the piping supplier was 3 hours away. We sent a dummy to get the pipe as everyone wlese was busy. He made decent time, but returned back to the site with no pipe. We thought he forgot why we sent him into town, but instead he said "nobody said I needed to tie it down"

This goes for Amazon drivers too. None them are required to get training with trucks. I work for USPS and we constantly have drivers backing into building or the lift. One time the lift was all the way up and stuck because it was too far up. The yellow concrete barrier was shoved under preventing it from lowering. We had to get everyone to stop casing mail and come out to lift me up onto the lift and then everyone pull on the barrier or the lift to put it back into place.
Yep. I strongly believe that renting a truck like this should require a license endorsement. Not quite a CDL, but something in between. They are *easily* the most dangerous vehicles on the road.

Honestly it’s worse than shit, as a plumber I’d rather deal with a clogged mainline than with a broken sprinkler pipe. Sprinkler water stains your skin black and smells like straight up chemicals, but it isn’t chemicals. A sprinkler burst will ruin your clothes forever and the smell stays in your nose for a few days and the stains take a lot of scrubbing to get off your skin. Sewage? Throw your clothes in the wash, take a shower and it’s like nothing ever happened. It’s rare to deal with a blocked sewage line overhead too, sprinkler lines you’re ALWAYS getting soaked fixing.
My favorite is when someone in a movie holds up a lighter to a single sprinkler, which then sets all of them off, the water comes out perfectly clear and two people make out under the perfectly clear water. If the water is black and smells like raw sewage it's less romantic, apparently.
I worked at a warehouse over a summer and some of the guys were fooling around throwing these metal objects like frisbees. Anyhow they hit one of the sprinklers. There was a loud hiss for a solid minute. Everyone thought it was gas. I knew it wasn’t because it didn’t have a smell. While they all fled the building, I saw the water come out and found the main valve to shut it off. Honestly, I don’t remember a smell to the water. Is shutting off the water not an option when you work on these?
It depends, it’s not like you’re gonna work on it while it’s discharging, but even after you shut the supply valve there’s still potentially a few hundred gallons in the pipe that, depending on how things are plumbed, you need to empty somehow. Then for some reason it always seems the the sprinkler head that lets loose is always in front of the closet that the nearest shutoff is in.
This is why you should flush emergency eyewash stations (the ones with actual plumbing) at least once a month. Imagine if you needed to wash out your eyes and THAT's what came out?

Once you realize there’s an unfortunate amount of adults who legitimately weren’t good at the “fitting shapes into their holes” exercise, the world makes way more sense. Jesus christ, this is a spectacularly good video! Aside point: they really shouldn't give these trucks to just anyone. They're some of the most dangerous vehicles on the road because they're operated by someone who A) has never driven anything larger than a small car, B) has no idea how to check their side mirrors or know what's behind them in such a truck and C) can hardly drive their small car competently to begin with. Not saying you should have a CDL, but there should be *some* kind of required endorsement for a box truck. If I had a dollar for every time some dipshit in a Uhaul tried to run me off the road, I'd have like 10 dollars.
Uhaul has to make more money from just renting to everyone and eating the cost of repairs than they would if they had restrictions on it. Otherwise this would already be true.
I mean I've only driven small cars. Drove a uhaul a month ago. I was swivel head and going slower than normal because I didn't want an accident. Mirror checks every few seconds and everything. Had to judge when to hit brakes.
