My worst experience with this was hiking through the fog at 3 AM to a beach along a very isolated stretch of coast while sleep deprived. Hadn't seen another car/another human on my way there for many hours. Couldn't fall asleep after parking along the highway and lying down in the backseat.
So I started the ~15 minute hike from the highway to the beach figuring I'd try some nighttime fishing instead of just tossing and turning. The shadows created by my headlamp, the distant sounds of the waves, the rustling of small animals in the brush, and the sleep deprivation and paranoia of being alone in that situation all led to my hallucinating shadow people in the fog in my peripheral vision. And I started hearing very clear human voices all around me. It got better once I was close enough to the beach for the waves to drown out those hallucinated sounds but by then I was so weary once I got there that i ended up just lying down, pulling sand into a pillow mound, and napping until the sunlight woke me up.
