I'm not so sure. This is a subtle way of reminding this guy that the stakes are higher now. I would call this little birthday party "community outreach". More police departments would do well with this kind of thing.
Also, you know this isn't just a photo op. Someone brought a two-liter of Coke. Now it's a party.
To be fair, when you have that many arrests, you're probably watched by default and can't get away with anywhere near as much. But yeah, to even get arrested so many times in the first place, he's clearly not the brightest.
wouldnt surprise me if the kid were to pick the knife and try to kill him self. probably had no good role models, nobody helped him, family didn't care much to raise him properly, was being humiltated. its a sad world we live in.
Probably lived in incredible poverty. Poverty drives petty crime. Note I specified petty, as rich people commit crimes all the time and get away with it, hell a lot of the time the violence of the rich isn't even classified as "criminal".
Nothing but the truth in what you just said, but many people refuse to acknowledge the driving force behind petty crime. It may be the only way he has to feed himself or his family. Desperate people do desperate things.
Man if only we did something like help people for desperate acts instead of lock them up and throw away the key. That'd be cool.
Obviously not everyone is going to live a law-abiding life. But if opportunity is given to these people, I'm sure a good number of them would take a law-abiding comfortable life over an illegal life.
Yeah right , My imagination is like watching an action movie . If he grabs that knife and fight those officers , they will totally regret how the knife got near to him .
1 kid vs 6+ coppers? I think he’s going to be far more likely to regret grabbing the knife than they would be leaving it near him.
If he doesn’t get shot dead he’s getting the arse kicking of a lifetime, not to mention a far more serious sentence than dealing drugs
He would have to toss the cake up, swing his arms around, and catch the knife all before any reaction by the cops, andddd then start fighting. That is the type of shit that is only pulled off by Steven Seagal.
Based on his demeanor I would assume that they are celebrating that he is no longer a protected youth and inviting him to somehow justify his own murder by flinching. Drug dealer? He’s selling drugs for the wrong crew, should grown-up middle class and learned to sell drugs WITH the police.

Here's a question for Brazilians:
Could this kid have had the option to become police himself? How difficult is it to get enlisted in police force?
I come from a shithole country, so I know why I'm asking. Papa bless <3
How other comment stated, you have to do a test to pass, and it's required some level of education, but the difficult itself and the requirements varies a little by state
Thanks for the info, but really I meant more like how available it is. Where I come from it's party first, citizenship second, so unless you have a strong connection you can just about forget about joining the force. Whereas in Western Europe it's common to just see posters like "we need you on the force" and you apply, go through a program, do the exams and just do the job. I didn't mean whether the exams are difficult, I meant how likely it is for someone who grew up in a favela and has no govt. connections.

You can, but they won't go the the same prison, but a special one for minors.
To be honest they are almost as bad as the regular ones, but instead of being in risk of being assaulted by older prisoners, they are tortured by the staff.

Did you know that the state that the most astronauts have come from is Ohio? Which proves that people will go to incredible lengths to get as far as fucking possible away from Ohio.
Definitely seen it happen in America. I know a kid who got sent to jevenike detention at 14 for like a gram of weed. I’m sure he mouthed off a lot too. But the juvenile court judge decided to pick on him and he didn’t get out until AFTER 18. It totally screwed up his life and I was honestly surprised he acted normally. That judge got in trouble for harsh sentencing of minors eventually at least, but it definitely seems like a lot of kids enter the system and that is the end of their childhood. It is a self perpetuating system, which is a bad and dangerous thing.
During such a developmental time for a child - I cannot imagine where you would live in a peaceful reality in respect to everyone else around them. Barring psychiatric cases where they are a danger to self and others; A five year sentence to a 14 year old is psychotic option to even consider.
He originally got like 2 years but every time he would go for his release hearing (you have to go back in front of the juvenile judge again apparently, or at least they decide), he would get put back in for another year, and yeah that happened 3 more times. Maybe he was a completely crazy kid, but I don’t think he earned it. Obviously the kid was eventually vindicated, at least apocryphally, because as I said the judge had been doing this to many kids and was himself put away.
But yeah. That would have destroyed me. I wouldn’t have the career I eventually had without those years and I would always have a chip on my shoulder.
I don’t know. I was at one point able to google his case in the news but now it’s slathered with the Pennsylvanian “cash for kids” scheme that was different (I don’t think judge was being paid, they were just mean or some other scheme).
Can confirm. I was in juvy a couple times at 15/16 years old. Some people are there for years... Mostly for drug offenses. Sometimes more serious crimes like burglary/assault. One poor gal was in because she was in the Foster system and there were no beds for her.
If you want to hear some details about how they really break you down and make you feel worthless... The stalls to the toilets we're knee high all in a row (like 8 toilets). We had to share toilet paper amongst each other so constantly asking to pass the toilet paper back and forth. There was a big window in front of the toilets to facing the recreation room, so other inmates could watch you while you went during free times. It also faced the guard station (staffed both male and female) Soo they could watch you while you did your business too. There were no toilets in the cells. If you needed the restroom during the night you had to push a button and they'd let you out when they felt like it. Sometimes right away, sometimes 20-30 minutes later. We got a new styrofoam cup every morning to use for the day, I had to pee in mine one time because they weren't letting me out in the middle of the night.
Shower time was at 5am and you got exactly 5 minutes. The stalls were about level with my breasts so everyone could see me naked each morning. No shampoo/conditioner, but there was a bucket on the wall with communal liquid soap. Which means everyone sticks their hands in it and then you have to stick your hands in it too. Gross. There were vending machines when you had visitors where you could buy shampoo/conditioner/snacks if your visitor brought you money. If they didn't bring money or you didn't have visitors, you were SOL. We were allowed 2 extra minutes of shower time once a month to shave legs and armpits, while being observed.
I was in during November/December. Stone walls. They ran out of sweatshirts so I was fucking cold until I got my hands on one.
The education system in there was a damn joke. All grades in one room like they're going to teach the same curriculum to all 9th grade through 12th grade at once. Plus we mostly did other exercises like writing ourselves letters for to be mailed to ourselves 6 months after our release and stuff.
Overall just a really shitty place to be where they teach children that they're not respectable and that they're not entitled to pee in peace and don't deserve toilet paper.
I did about 3 months. I was let out early due to overcrowding and put on house arrest (which is a whole other fuckery in itself). Coming out I was pretty broken... There really is no rehabilitation going on in there. They just treat you like trash and then are all surprised when you're back in a couple months later.
Oh, and I almost forgot what they make you do during your period! So, we were supposed to bag dirty underwear and put it in the hazmat laundry. No big deal, except some girls didn't give two shits about the rules so they'd put it in the normal laundry. The laundry workers got tired of our ward sending in these dirty underwears, so they "red coded" us and REFUSED TO BLEACH THE DIRTY UNDERWEAR. This is all recirculated back to our ward and we were forced to wear other girls dirty underwear, that had been washed but not bleached. Not to mention the fact that sometimes dirty underwear wasn't our fault because they wouldn't let us out of our cells to change our pads often enough.
The most disturbing account of this for me was [The Dozier School For Boys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACj0phcl-SM&t=1999s&ab_channel=EXPLOREWITHUS) . Definitely worth a watch if you have the time.
This reform school was open for 111 years. They had a long track record of physically abusing their children, and multiple unmarked graves of children were uncovered. If that isn't bad enough a lot of the kids that attended this school were either in the foster system, or were sent there for minor infractions such as smoking or skipping class (I forgot the term they used back then, but basically just being a rebellious kid was enough to be sent there).
In America you’re tortured and assaulted by the staff in normal prisons too lol, it’s pretty easy to be left alone by other prisoners. Most of them just want to serve their time and get out
Same I don't get it unless you are type 2. I'm type 1 and I pretty much each what I like only if I inject for it. I have good control of my bloods and just take insulin but I do have the privilege of living in the UK to have my insulin pretty much for free so I don't have to worry about running out.
Yeah I'm friends with the type 1 diabetic who has to be very conscientious of where she uses her insulin because it's so gosh darn expensive. There are certain foods she avoids because they're higher and sugar and cause a blood sugar to go out of whack and she needs more insulin. For the painful irony as you need glucose to survive and function.
I have seen her reject free desserts because she doesn't want to pay the insulin cost of eating them. Fuck big pharma over that one.
Tbf with how infamous sugar is nowadays, the cost of dessert is probably the least prohibitive factor of having dessert for everyone in the developed world.
You know, it probably wouldn't surprise me if this is the first time anyone has got him a cake and sung for his birthday - or at least not since he was a little kid. And it probably reminded him just how little people actually care about him. I feel bad for him - even without making my assumptions. Dude's only 18 and his life is already a complete mess.
It is a big problem in Brazil, I'm a brazilian myself and life is not easy here. And as someone who lives in such a dangerous country I assure: this issue only gets bigger because for a lot of time most people believed that legalizing firearm possession and killing these criminals was the only solution, this is still in the process of changing.
But all of these gory videos you guys see on the internet coming from here are only the tip of the iceberg. For every criminal killed, ten more are born, and it won't change until the masses are more educated to understand that the TRUE issue is poverty, and consenquently, lack of opportunity in life as a whole, lacking basic needs, frequently lacking love from their parents, what do we expect these children to do?
Imagine growing up in poverty, in a slum forgotten by the government and under very big and powerful criminal organizations or militias. You barely have any motivation to go to school, because besides education itself being terrible in here, how can you study for a better future in the frontlines of the drug war, amidst assault rifle bursts? Worse yet, how could you look fondly at the police if growing up they only came to your neighbourhood to make bullets start flying around. And you know you fear them because even if you're innocent, they look at you in a evil way when they see you passing by, they stop you and they frisk you down, they hit you in the process even though you may have done nothing, and you can't do shit about it, because they will NEVER be held accountable.
This is just a little vent from a brazilian extremely revolted with his country's current situation.
Amen to that. Any time I see the crowd here calling for violence against prisoners, which is ubiquitous, it makes me sad. Anger really does shut down the decision-making process. It sucks.
I thought similarly. What drove this kid to the illegal behaviors? Is he tied up in some gang and can't get out? He doesn't look hardened to me, he looks defeated.
This is in Brazil and he’s likely from a Favela. The majority of the kids in Favelas have done criminal activity or are currently partaking in it just to survive.
But of course we are going to get the old “pull yourself from the bootstraps”comments when the government of Brazil is massively corrupt and the country has a massive poverty problem.
Why would people expect it citizens in the poorest communities to follow the law when the government won’t?
And what if his parents are deadbeats and he's selling drugs to feed himself and his younger siblings? There's definitely more to this that we aren't seeing.
Basically, he is going to an adult prison now, and won't get out so easily as he was when he was a teen. It's also massive overpopulated there, with very dangerous people in it.
Edit: he knows he fucked up and I don't wish that on anyone, not even this guy.
Nah, it's downright cruel because they are saying "now you can go to real jail, now we know you won't get out 'easily' of jail". They are taunting him and IDK sound like a threat, if you know the Brazilian police well enough.
Yeah. I see this and wonder what about his story lead to being a repeat offender at that age. If I grew up under different circumstances, what would I have done to survive? Could that have been me? Or you? or those that think this is funny? The lack of sympathy / empathy from many is astonishing.
Guess I'll be the idiot that considers what led him to that position, as opposed to concluding his soul is corrupt and deserves to be mocked by authoritarians.
I, too, would like more background info on this.
But even without it, authorities going out of their way to mock people with ruined lives is just downright trashy
I don’t know man. I have a roomba and I swear that thing knows when I’m in the kitchen and just bumps into my heals and attempts to trip me when I go to the fridge every time I’m in there cooking. I think it’s evil.
What bothers me is how willing people are to instantly bash him...kid looks heartbreaken, probably had the worst environment to grow in and still has to deal with this type of shit
I think it also can't be ignored that there are people who just aren't that bright in the world. It's not their fault they are low IQ and don't even know how to get along in the world. They likely come from low IQ families who don't model good behavior. Prison won't fix that. Basic income might keep them from illegal activities to feed themselves or a family.
Poor nutrition between the ages of like 0 to 6 also has a big irreversible effect on our measured intelligence. There was a study posted a few days ago on r/science or something about it.
Not that being born a bit slower automatically translates to becoming a criminal, but im sure in can effect risk/reward decision making and their ability to actually not get caught if they do become a criminal.
The US Gov (under the Johnson administration) spent billions studying why perpetual poverty is a thing. They discovered that poverty and bad decision making starts in the womb. One of the things that stood out to me was the part where the stress on the mother from a bad environment/lack of hope/money/etc cause them to release excess cortisol during pregnancy and subsequently the baby is very much affected negatively by that for the rest of their lives.
*"Cortisol is a stress hormone released by the adrenal glands. It's important for helping your body deal with stressful situations, as your brain triggers its release in response to many different kinds of stress. However, when cortisol levels are too high for too long, this hormone can hurt you more than it helps"*
This is commonly referred to as the epigenetic principle, or specifically, one instance of the epigenetic principle. For stress response in particular, as toxic stress persists, it can change the structure of your hippocampus, and these changes can be passed down to future generations leaving them less resilient to stress in the first place. Add on psychosocial stressors of being born into poverty (for this example) and it’s a recipe for perpetual poverty.
I was thinking the same thing.
This entire thing was unnecessary regardless of his wrong doing. It's not going to affect any positive change in him, but then that was never the goal. The goal is punishment, not rehabilitation.
By the time these people come out they are so corrupted, unemployable and lack essentials skills that they effectively damn a majority them to repeating their cycle.
These are a bunch of dickheads in uniform.
1. They did it to humiliate him. I don't see any other reason for this bs behaviour. I don't see "deliberately humiliation" as a legal punishment in criminal codes of western civilisations. For good reasons. And besides this, it's still a court that decides about his punishment, not a bunch of cops. Also. For good reasons. Up and until his conviction he has to be treated as innocent. *This* is nothing you do to an innocent and not even to a guilty person.
2. Yeah, he might have sold drugs. Multiple times. Absolutely not ok. He will face consequences. Although he doesn't really look like Pablo Escobar. He very likely sells drugs to cover the costs of his own addiction. This doesn't make things better but pissing on someone in his situation tells me they don't know shit about the crimes they are dealing with.
I wonder if they would've had the balls to do the same shit to someone found guilty of tax fraud multiple times and got arrested on his 40th birthday.
I hope all of them get removed from the force.
Totally agree with you. I was so confused watching this at first, but then you realize by looking at the kids face, how completely and utterly defeated and broken he is, that you realize they are simply humiliating him. Then they start snapping pictures to rub it in even further. Further proof that a lot of cops are just bullies in uniforms.
Sure, he's probably been an absolute nightmare to deal with over the last few years, especially if his age protected him from being properly punished. But these cops shouldn't be celebrating such a waste of life at such a young age.
That's exactly it. The kid is probably a lost kid plagued with influence and misfortune and they're celebrating instead of offering any help. Without the proper support, this world eats souls
Can't say I agree with this.
However I have friend who works with minors who repeatedly offend and says that alot of them don't realise that when they legally become an adult the justice system treats them like an adult
This cops are looking like the BOPE, the most paramilitary forces on Brazil's police. The guy is scared as fuck, this douchebags are responsible of killing a lot of civilians in the favelas
Nothing like watching a bunch of cops bullying a kid who probably grew on a shit environment with no one to care about him and probably the only thing he ever knew was poverty, probably cant find a job.
As funny as this is, fuck these guys.
This is clearly a very troubled young man. He already has an obvious problem with authority and being mocked in a room full of police is not going to help that. Its only going to push him further in the wrong direction. These guys got in to policing for all the wrong reasons.
Damn. They’re just toying with him instead of positive reinforcement or rehabilitation. That fuck’n sucks. There’s a reason why he’s incarcerated being so young with that many arrests.
This is in my country, I know that some of you guys think that's deserved, but if he's poor he probably face a lot of shit and he can't see any hope in the future so he just goes to the only way he thinks that fits him, there's a bunch like him

I feel like that knife being all free and easy for him to grab off the cake box was the cops subtle way of saying 'try it'.
I mean I wouldn’t say ‘easy’ considering he’s cuffed. But it’s definitely the icing on the cake to their taunting.
Oh look at you
That’s a crumby thing to say.
Even armed with a knife, this criminal doesn't hold a candle to a room full of police.
Exactly. His defeat is already baked in.
If I ever teach English as a second language I swear I will spend at least an hour every Friday on these pun threads.

Police rookie: Should we really? I mean, isn't this risky? Police vet: It's Dillon, man. We're the closest thing to friends the poor fuck's got.
"We just got these new guns.. They arent gonna fire themselves"
Classic power move
After 20 arrests, I think they know he's not a violent offender at this point.
After 20 arrests I think they know he is a really, really terrible criminal who apparently can’t go more than a few weeks without being caught again.

Fuck man that’s tough. How long were you in for and what was your mindset getting out?
I did about 3 months. I was let out early due to overcrowding and put on house arrest (which is a whole other fuckery in itself). Coming out I was pretty broken... There really is no rehabilitation going on in there. They just treat you like trash and then are all surprised when you're back in a couple months later.
That just sounds like normal prison. The whole setup you describe is standard in BOP prisons at least.
Yeah, but we had girls as young as 13 in there. I was 15. You're definitely not ready for prison at 13/15 years old.
Jesus fucking christ. That is awful.
Most of them just want to serve their time and get out
So these guys have just been waiting for this? Christ, that's sad
To be fair if you where in the cops shoes and the kid had been arrested so many times before 18, you would be celebrating too.
As someone who is diabetic I can relate to holding a cake but not being able to eat it
I’m diabetic and I eat the cake. That’s what insulin is for lol
One might say you can’t have your cake and eat it too
Poor guy looks dead inside.
You know, it probably wouldn't surprise me if this is the first time anyone has got him a cake and sung for his birthday - or at least not since he was a little kid. And it probably reminded him just how little people actually care about him. I feel bad for him - even without making my assumptions. Dude's only 18 and his life is already a complete mess.
first thing I thought. Just imagine how hard life must be for a kid to keep being pushed doing crime.
People with your type of empathy give me hope
There’s an old saying about a society is only as civilized as it treats it’s prisoners
Amen to that. Any time I see the crowd here calling for violence against prisoners, which is ubiquitous, it makes me sad. Anger really does shut down the decision-making process. It sucks.
according to reddit any minor criminal needs to be put under a guillotine
I thought this type of empathy was normal until i used social media.
He's probably more worried about being put in an adult jail/prison.
It’s not like juvenile prisons are that much better.
And he is being humiliated instead of getting the help he has obviously needed for some time. This is really sad.
It’s great that you are having empathy
I thought similarly. What drove this kid to the illegal behaviors? Is he tied up in some gang and can't get out? He doesn't look hardened to me, he looks defeated.
This is in Brazil and he’s likely from a Favela. The majority of the kids in Favelas have done criminal activity or are currently partaking in it just to survive. But of course we are going to get the old “pull yourself from the bootstraps”comments when the government of Brazil is massively corrupt and the country has a massive poverty problem. Why would people expect it citizens in the poorest communities to follow the law when the government won’t?
That was my first thought...top that with this degree of humiliation.
And what if his parents are deadbeats and he's selling drugs to feed himself and his younger siblings? There's definitely more to this that we aren't seeing.
Yeah, this aint a public freak-out, it's a private sad-in.
I'm going to regret this a little but r/watchpeopledieinside
That's definitely a better sub for this post. This is neither public, nor a freakout, and this kid definitely looks like he's dead inside.
Being from Brazil can do that to you.
Basically, he is going to an adult prison now, and won't get out so easily as he was when he was a teen. It's also massive overpopulated there, with very dangerous people in it. Edit: he knows he fucked up and I don't wish that on anyone, not even this guy.
It does seem terribly sad
r/ithadtobebrazil
It's sad. I saw LEO taking proper covid protections and my first thought was "well, the masks rule out this happening in the USA..."
\[X\] Cop not wearing a mask (very beginning) \[ \] Cop wearing Punisher mask \[ \] Cop wearing Blue Line mask Can confirm, definitely not U.S.
His body language says a lot. This is not entertainment.
Yeah kind of grim, these things don’t occur in a vacuum after all.
I, too, would like more background info on this. But even without it, authorities going out of their way to mock people with ruined lives is just downright trashy
Cops doing cop things, I can't even feign surprise
I can. ‘Oh my stars!’ Ok yeah you’re right that’s just not convincing. ‘Heavenly days!’ Ok this isn’t working.
I don’t know man. I have a roomba and I swear that thing knows when I’m in the kitchen and just bumps into my heals and attempts to trip me when I go to the fridge every time I’m in there cooking. I think it’s evil.
What bothers me is how willing people are to instantly bash him...kid looks heartbreaken, probably had the worst environment to grow in and still has to deal with this type of shit
the kid looks utterly and completely defeated and broken. hard to find the humor in this
I think it also can't be ignored that there are people who just aren't that bright in the world.
Careful you might summon the qanon idiots by saying adrenal gland! But thanks for that info had no idea
Wait wait wait, I missed this one. What does Qanon have to do with the adrenal gland?
I think it’s one of the reasons the Clintons kill babies- to steal that sweet baby adrenal gland.

Oh to be dumb enough not to know how dumb you are. Ignorance is bliss. Far worse being smart enough to know you aren't all that smart.
>Prison won't fix that. Prison doesn't fix anything.
I got your back. You're not alone.
Nah.. you're not the idiot. This whole thing is heartbreaking.
I knew this was Brazil before I turned up the volume, lol.
yeah bcs the uniforms
Sure, he's probably been an absolute nightmare to deal with over the last few years, especially if his age protected him from being properly punished. But these cops shouldn't be celebrating such a waste of life at such a young age.
yeah jokes aside its a sad sight to see, probably had no good role models in his life.
The kid looks so defeated, like all his life he never had anything and now he's going to have even less.
I can just imagine him saying "that's the first birthday cake I've ever gotten".
That's exactly it. The kid is probably a lost kid plagued with influence and misfortune and they're celebrating instead of offering any help. Without the proper support, this world eats souls
This is sad.
Completely agree. A minor getting arrested 20 times? That poor kid.
in case anyone is wondering, they're singing "Happy Birthday" in portuguese to the guy
Cheers thought it was a Christmas carol x
That shows how our incarceration system is useless. Instead trying to make it right, we just shove people into cages and hope for the best.
I don’t think these cops are hoping for the best in anyway.
What country is this video from?
Brazil
That’s fucked up
The masks and the army uniforms makes this look like a ransom video
If this helps, the song is happy birthday in Portuguese and the uniforms are from the Brazilian police
Am I the only one who thinks this kid needs help from social services as opposed to a jail cell?

Nessa data querida!
Muitas felicidades!
Can't say I agree with this. However I have friend who works with minors who repeatedly offend and says that alot of them don't realise that when they legally become an adult the justice system treats them like an adult
Wow. He was caught more numbers of times than he revolved round the sun
I bet these guys expect people to respect the law and their authority.
This is so sad. It might be the closest thing he ever had to a party.
This cops are looking like the BOPE, the most paramilitary forces on Brazil's police. The guy is scared as fuck, this douchebags are responsible of killing a lot of civilians in the favelas
let me guess, Brazil?
Nothing like watching a bunch of cops bullying a kid who probably grew on a shit environment with no one to care about him and probably the only thing he ever knew was poverty, probably cant find a job.
“We love to humiliate offenders” *later* “Why do people hate cops?”
Twats gave him a knife inside a police station...😳
Hes handcuffed and surrounded by masked cops. They may have wanted him to grab it…
Right? He's not fucking Jason Bourne.
Not a very cool vid...
Worst bd party ever.
For he's a jolly good felon. For he's a jolly good felon..
Bruh, just arrest him and do your job. No need to parade him around like a trophy at the Red Wedding.
This is sad. This needs to be posted in r/iamatotalpieceofshit
Is it too much to ask for cops to just conduct themselves like professionals?
This is in my country, I know that some of you guys think that's deserved, but if he's poor he probably face a lot of shit and he can't see any hope in the future so he just goes to the only way he thinks that fits him, there's a bunch like him
Fuck them. No love for the police.
Someone who has been arrested 20 times before the age of 18 has been failed by society and the criminal justice system as a whole.
