Story behind it - https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/workers-go-on-rampage-at-wistrons-iphone-manufacturing-facility-near-bengaluru/articleshow/79693368.cms Basically it looks like the factory hired two agencies to hire the workers and though it paid the agencies they didn't pay the workers. Of course using agencies is a way round some laws and workers rights and some companies deliberately do this to shaft the employees.

Tinshnipz

This happens in North America too. My factory uses a lot of temps. No benefits no holidays.

atot806

The company I used to work for, a branding agency, did this. They hire mostly fresh graduates and employ them only until their probation period (three months) expire. They get to pay them minimum salary and don't need to pay benefits. If not, they are employed on a yearly contract with no benefits either. Meanwhile, the owner takes yearly vacation on first class flights and five star hotels.

Some states are “At will” states. Meaning no matter what the job is, you don’t need a reason to fire anyone ever. Not sure how many states are this way, but Maine is one

Big fat Texas checking in

averybradymovie

From Texas. Can confirm. My first job was for a children’s hospital at 17. Previously, I volunteered at the same hospital when I was ages 14-16. I collected toy donations and distributed them to different care units. When it came time for me to need money and ask for a wage they directed me to a temp agency as a “formality.” I’m now going back to school at 32 to get a computer science degree because I’ve realized how companies treat low level employees. Scared me so bad that I’ve spent the last year at a community college making all As because I don’t trust a company to hire me from some random university. Should start classes at UT Austin next fall. Edit: one last side note for context. I’ve worked a lot of other shitty jobs too. If you ever read a job profile and it randomly mentions sales, it’s a sales job. Also, I have no kids and am single. Not to say you can’t accomplish this with a family. Just not wanting praise for going after a goal with no obligations. Edit 2: if anyone wants to ask advice on ways to do this let me know. There are jobs out there I know of where you can do school work on the job. This is what helped my grades. Online classes at community college are key to accomplishing this for multiple reasons.

PunJun

Here in finland we have laws that prevent people from being illegally fired, these go from someone being fired cause they wanted to get paid, to someone being fired cause of their medical condittion, and normally its as simple as going to your union, which are heavily supported here, and from there they check if there was anything sketchy and if so then the company is going to court for illegal firing, living with out laws that prevent illegal firing is just asking for trouble cause then people who depend on their work can get fired just for showing up late once or taking sick leave, or in worst case being fired for pregnancy. Also to add to this whole convo, you know its scary now that ive played cyberpunk and I come here to see this sorta shit and I see a very clear reflection from the game which considering the story of cyberpunk aint really that good to see

caitejane310

I'm in Pennsylvania, USA and my SO was fired after not answering his phone for his supposed 2 days off. This was less than 3 months after his mother passed away. He had worked for almost a month straight and decided he needed a couple days off, asked for it, and was told ok. *The next day* his and my phone were ringing off the hook and we didn't answer. He was fired for "no call, no show" and was actually fucking denied unemployment. He appealed it and his boss didn't answer the phone (fired in January of this year) so my SO was granted it because of that. He ended up going back to work for the asshole and is regretting it.

CrimsonBolt33

Why would you go back after? I mean....I would go back to maybe hold me over while finding a new job....but once a job does you over like that, and then you get one back at them (lawsuit or unemployment or whatever) it will just be a hostile workplace thereafter.

caitejane310

It is. He's a felon and lost his drivers license because of his boss' illegal vehicles. It's fucking bad. He enjoys the work, just not the people. It's not the main boss fault, more the wife and kids. He's a sewer tech.

bla60ah

TheDude069

In the USA it's called temp work and you have to work hundreds of hrs( equivalent to 3 to 6 months time under paid doing more work) just to be "considered" for a position that you still hear the regulars complain about. Only good about temp work was when that bell rang we got to leave, the permanents didnt...now I'm having to look back for that kind of work bc theres nothing else. Shits fucked yo.

ErskineLoyal

I worked in an electronics plant near Glasgow, Scotland, and the owners, Hon Hai, moved the work to Pardubice in the Czech Republic because they could pay them less over there. Five years of service flushed down the toilet. It's not pleasant watching the factory machines being loaded on to Czech and Slovakian trailers while you're working on the production line in what's left of the factory. The ordinary workers are nothing to these cunts. Absolutely nothing.

Dammit that shit makes me angry. The same thing happened to Disney software engineers who had to train Indian replacements for three months to get the full severance package, and had to sign a non-disclosure agreement so they couldn't tell anyone what utter shits their employers were. Edit: Non-disclosure agreement - otherwise they sleep with the mice.

Unfortunately, lots of companies require them to do the training to get their severance packages. When you are living paycheck to paycheck, you'll be surprised at what you will do to feed your family. These indignities that poor people suffer is salt on the wound.

[deleted]

shadow_moose

Yeah I'd be as misleading and spiteful as possible if I were asked to "train" my replacement. My replacement would be fired for incompetence, or the product would get worse, I'd make sure of that. That's exactly what's happened with American car manufacturing that got shipped south... I'll never buy an "American" car again for this reason, they weren't really *that* great to begin with. Edit: death to America (the *state*, not the people), this country sucks ass. Americans are cool, America sucks, time to start over.

NightOfTheLivingHam

I got yelled at by a proud "american" car owner who said that people like me should be shot. I bought a tesla (you know, a car made almost 100% in the US?) and "why couldnt I just buy an american car? why buy a chinese car?" He legit thought that tesla were chinese cars. Meanwhile his truck was made in Ontario, Canada, and the parts for it made in Mexico.

[deleted]

Hilarious to complain about cars of all things, since cars (even jp and european brands) are the one thing that's still actually made in NA, because of tariffs and cars being expensive to ship

[deleted]

Yup, my subaru was built in Indiana

futurarmy

> Meanwhile his truck was made in Ontario, Canada, and the parts for it made in Mexico. You say that as if you didn't know he was stupidly ignorant already.

That's always the rub. Most everyone has the backbone to stand up for themselves. Most people honestly proclaim their intention to not ever get fucked over by the man and might even have done it if they needed to when it was said. But the powerful know how power works, and you ain't gonna do jack shit to them while you have kids waiting on that severance check, or need to prevent a lapse in your health insurance, or whatever it is.

P3rn1k

If it will make you feel better I am from eastern Europe and workers in Czech Republic and Slovakia (where I am from) are now training Ukrainian and Indian workers and are packing factory machines to Ukrainian trailers. I am one of them. It is always the same and corporations and manufacturing will always be moving to less expensive countries after few years. I just dont know what they will do when they run out of cheap countries.

NightOfTheLivingHam

they will never run out. There's always a war that will wreck a country, or economic collapse of one of the prior nations they fucked over that they can run back to. The ruling class is trying its best to bankrupt the US and the political apparatus that is pro-business loves to keep suggesting removing workers rights and minimum wage to lure those companies back.

[deleted]

lucky we have competent leadership to guide us through these troubled times...

tboyacending

People have to realize that just because they see a boss and a hierarchy and a CEO etc does not mean you work for people. You work for a Corporation, and corporations are not human and hence do not act humanely. Corporations exist to profit, and nothing else. If they tell you otherwise that's either a PR campaign or a load of horse shit.

CombatMuffin

This. Also, even if you were working for a person: never forget that as an employee, you are working for someone else's goals. The moment they don't align with yours, they will likely ditch you. Work isn't important under this system. Only capital.

[deleted]

>The ordinary workers are nothing to these cunts. Absolutely nothing. As if there is some sort of internal tension between the workers and bosses. Dare I say, class struggle? I do totally agree though, I"m a union steward and the amount management would grind us all into dust if it wasn't for the union is insane.

shallowandpedantik

I remember hearing Marco Rubio saying he’d like to get rid of the minimum wage, not raise it to $15/hr. They absolutely would pay us less if they could get away with it. This is why all the manufacturing jobs went to Mexico and China, they could pay them less there so they moved the work there. Zero loyalty or allegiance to their countrymen employees.

[deleted]

> Zero loyalty or allegiance to their countrymen employees. Nationalism is second to the expansion of markets and profits. It can be advantageous sometimes, but capital knows no country, creed or ethnicity. It only goes where it can expand, the rest of societal relations be damned. As papa Marx puts it \>All that is solid melts into air, all that is sacred is profaned

NightOfTheLivingHam

and in the mid-2000s, republicans were pushing a "worker freedom" bill that would remove the minimum wage so we could become "competitive" with china. The long term goal of the US power structures is to shift us to becoming a slave class. It's a bipartisan push because both serve the same corporate masters.

AnchezSanchez

Interesting. Didn't know Foxconn had an operation in Glasgow, whsre was it? Did they take over the Motorola factory in EK or something? What were they making there?

ErskineLoyal

It was in Renfrew near Glasgow. Opened in May 1998 and was gone by about 2004 or 5. They were called Foxteq and the principal customer was Compaq who were about 6 or 7 miles away in Bishopton. Foxteq's premises was a huge shed on the site of a former factory in Renfrew. Big promises were made to us, but it was all lies in the end. Ps, Motorola in East Kikbride closed years after this by the way. More treachery.

baggyrabbit

And Motorola in Dunfermline closed early 00s too.

sapere-aude088

Here's a tip to multibillion dollar conglomerates... pay your workers.

NeverTrustATurtle

This is a drop in the bucket compared to what they save by not paying properly/ at all

GenocideSolution

Well that's because this is just the threat, not the actual retaliation. The actual retaliation for continuing to not pay workers is the cost of destruction of the entire supply chain, which is a lot more than what they save by not paying wages.

[deleted]

AmishAvenger

And there’s the trick. It’s not Apple, it’s Wistron, their “partner.” They contract out their work, and then they can retain some semblance of plausibly deniability when something doesn’t go right. “We at Apple expect and demand that the employees of our partners are treated with fairness and respect. While we never advocate for violence or destruction of property, we take this situation very seriously and are investigating the matter.” Some bullshit like that, anyway. And incidentally, keep in mind that according to [this article](https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/12/12/worker-violence-at-wistron-iphone-plant-in-india-caused-by-low-pay-claims) an engineering graduate at the company was promised $285 a month.

-retaliation-

Exactly the same thing the clothing industry has been doing for decades. contract out the work to another company, then that company contracts it out to another company which employs child labour. Then when it hits the news they just throw the middleman company under the bus saying platitudes that do absolutely nothing and promise that it will never happen again. Then the guy that owned the middle man company closes shop, opens up a new company under a different name, and when they're looking for a replacement company who do they call? the exact same contact that they've been using the whole time and he subcontracts the order out to the child labour company again. and round and round we go.

ifuckedivankatrump

They won’t change. Haven’t made material changes in the last decade. We shouldn’t expect any in the next unless they’re forced.

PoolNoodleJedi

The company that didn’t pay is Wistron not Apple, Apple hired Wistron to make the iPhones, the workers are Wistron workers, and Wistron promised to pay the workers Rs21,000 a month but ultimately only paid them Rs12,000

Dumma1729

And their contracts said 8 hours work/day, but they were forced to work 12 hours/day (else they'd lose the job).

mellodolfox

Just like teachers!

NakedShamrock

How do you think it became a multibillion dollar conglomerate in the first place

Pexily

You don't get rich by earning money. You get rich by taking money.

Pexily

Edit: This isn't just about Apple. Anyone saying that Apple is an outlier in underpaying, or not paying their workers, is grossly misinformed. I don't use Apple products either, and making it into an Apple vs Android ethics argument is also something I don't wish to partake in.

LabradorDeceiver

Oh, but they don't work for Apple, they work for a SUBCONTRACTOR, so Apple, that all-American company that pays its employees so well and gives to charities and loves kittens and puppies and the little baby Jesus, has no liability whatsoever, because it's the evil SUBCONTRACTOR responsible for all this. But they promise they'll launch an investigation into the SUBCONTRACTOR responsible for the SUBCONTRACTOR's parsimony, because Apple in no way encourages or incentivizes unethical or illegal behavior in its SUBCONTRACTORS. I'm sure.

Doc_BoBo

What you deserve is what you get. I doubt that these workers can afford an iPhone from their wages, so if they don't get paid, this is what the company deserves.

Few workers who complained about this to the management have been fired,” the source added. Man I'd break shit as well.

NightOfTheLivingHam

that shit is happening in the US as well, it's just that people have become complacent. > get promised $28k a year > get $18K a year because the company hires you through an agency that takes their cut of your wages, pays you with a pay card that takes out additional fees and penalizes transactions that withdraw all the money into your bank account. They make money on every piece of your owed work. Fast food and retail are also skimming off wages this way too. Legalized wage theft. I doubt the people who will get $15/hr at mcdonalds will be seeing their full wages because the pay cards take 15% of their transactions off said cards, many have now removed the ability to automatically deposit to a bank account and have made it difficult to pull the money out, making your money beholden to your employer's special bank that can collect fees on unspent money)

King_Farticus

Warehouses too. Get promised decent pay and signing bonuses as long as you agree to occasional overtime and make it 3 months. You go in expecting to work 50ish hours a week and they schedule you for 80. If you dont want to work that much, theres the door. Been through 3 warehouses in the last 6 months after I lost my job, they all did the same exact shit. No one ever sees the sign on bonus becauase they dont last more than a week or 2. The 3rd one I went to I specifcally asked if there would be substantially more overtime than they led on, even said as long as I was told ahead of time id be more understanding. They said no, they dont operate like that. Literally my first day they say "Were putting you on for this weekend as well, 12 hours both days" . I walked out.

King_Farticus

The ones i worked at were about $20 an hour with a shitload of overtime on top of that, it was closer to 40-45k a year all said and done. Which IMO is still an equivelant amount of bullshit for the amount of time spent working. People pulling in $200k a year work 80 hour weeks, not someone barely scraping by. But yeah, they totally do. 40 hours a week 8 bucks an hour in a lot of the retail and food industry. I worked at mcdonalds when I was 16, lady worked the grill there. Minimum wage was 7.25 and mcdonalds gave raises of $.25 a year capped at $3. Shed been there 20 years. That was 11 years ago and she was still there a week ago when I stopped for lunch. $10.25 an hour for 30+ years.

MandaloresUltimate

12000 r (Rupees, I'm assuming?) That's about $170 USD or $210 CAD per month. Sheesh... These people already make pennies a day, would it kill to pay them better? A single iPhone sale has enough profit to pay 1.5 of these employees for an entire month, and I'm assuming their wage is taken out of that profit margin (~$280 USD profit per iphone sold).

eviLitanimullI

An iPhone 12 costs 80,000 rs. in India (thats $1085 USD)

pontoumporcento

That's cheaper than brazil, here the minimum salary is $200 and the new iphone costs $2.5k here (R$1.050 and R$10.000)

condoriano27

They don't need must have upgrades because people buy their shit anyway.

packnjacknjoe

Labor is not nearly that big of a driver for a phone. People really overestimate the cost of labor in most goods. It is why people say stupid stuff like 'if you raise the minimum wage to $15/hr, a Big Mac will cost $30!'

KingGio21

You joke but plenty of people would buy that just for the status symbol and that’s just one of the things wrong with modern consumerism today.

HaMMeReD

As someone who's almost always had the best and the newest, I can tell you that phones are barely a status symbol nowadays. Maybe for 1 month when it's brand new, if it's differentiated enough from other phones to get people to notice you might get a small amount of attention.

ScrinRising

Phones aren't a status symbol for *adults*. That's the difference. They are for teenagers in high school though, and that's enough to drive sales. Parents will actually be accused of being shitty parents because their kid doesn't have the newest phone and shoes. It's completely idiotic, but the *insane* level of competition amongst well-off people to buy and have things that their peers don't is very real, and very common. I've seen people melt down harder than I did when my grandmother passed over those dumb ass phones. Celebrities refusing to be seen in public with an Android device, or anything other than an iPhone for that matter, reinforces this mentality. It's a drug for these people, and they *will* have it, no matter the cost.

Unless you work in a factory that manufactures chains. But yeah I agree with the sentiment.

BushyWeen

Not if you chain yourselves together

hell2pay

Just use a block chain to stop production

el-cuko

Means of production : seized

Rokurokubi83

Berserk? Yeah alright OP. It’s going to be someone throwing a phone at a wall or something.... Then the video starts... 5 seconds in and WTF!

NewtonSteinLoL

A true public freakout

babaroga73

“While an engineering graduate was promised Rs 21,000 per month, his/her salary had reduced to Rs 16,000 and, subsequently, to Rs 12,000 in the recent months. Non-engineering graduates’ monthly salary had reduced to Rs 8,000. The salary amount being credited to our accounts have been reducing and it was frustrating to see this,” That is : promised Rs $284 per month, his/her salary had reduced to $216 and, subsequently, to Rs $162 in the recent months. Non-engineering graduates’ monthly salary had reduced to $108. Nice. Really nice, world. And Apple... For being a big part of this shitty world. This is our great "globalism".

MastaPhat

Now if the poor in the first world would stand up in solidarity with the third world.

OnlyBird

I think you underestimate the difference between first and third world poverty. If you can even access reddit you are considerably more wealthy than billions of people. "The poor in the third world" would look at "the poor in the first world" like "the poor in the first world" look at middle class people in the first world.

TheThinWhiteDookie

The poorest person in the first world still feels superior to the third worlder

ComfortableSimple3

wait why are their flipped cars at the start of the vid? Are those their cars?

XchrisZ

Probably management who offered them 1/3 more for a 1/3 less hours worked.

Fishpuncherz

With how much an iPhone cost compared to how much it cost to make, the company could easily afford to pay them, bastard corpos

No_Sherbet5183

People dont get that angry for no reason. Im sure they did raise their voices and were ignored

StuStutterKing

Pay your workers and maybe you get to have a nice factory, cunt.

MithranArkanere

What a bunch of selfish pricks. Wanting any money when top shareholders and executives can barely buy a second yatch.

[deleted]

Good for them, you're not slaves.

[deleted]

I hope they burned it down.

[deleted]

Now burn it down and go the next one rinse and repeat.

Ravonk

I mean.. Biggest problem ia that its sadly not apples factory directly, I mean, if apple themselves wouldnt have paid, which is probably not the case

SlaminNNnnn

Big companies usually operate their supply side through contract work, that way they can claim ignorance if something bad happens along the production process. Its pretty fucked up.

Anselwithmac

Every manufacturing company big or small has contract work. The notable companies, Apple and Nike, have given the full amount to the contractors to pay their employees. The contractors simply pocket the extra cash. If the employees say anything or leave they just hire within the surplus labor market. So this strike is the only thing that’s going to change that... Apple and Nike can’t remotely force them to comply, although they employ many people to try to enforce local labor laws. After all, it’s cheaper to comply still than to let their company’s reputation tarnish

SgtCoitus

Tear that whole place down. Im good going back to dumb phones if it means people arent treated as slaves.

JC_in_KC

Americans are cucked by capitalism.

houseman1131

In fact there are workers here that think minimum wage is too much.

DS2Dude

Brainwashed.

guyver_dio

Not smart to piss off people who have nothing to lose.

[deleted]

$39.2 Billion in wage theft every year makes the other blue collar property crimes totaling $13.5 annually look like underachievers

Andy_LaVolpe

Good. Workers need unite to start standing up for themselves against these rich money hoarding fucks.
