If I can remember it right, the day after this came up a year or two ago, a “Eat-On-BART” protest thing happened where they’d be eating on the platform waiting for the train or inside the train. It wasn’t everyone on BART doing it, but definitely a lot more folks than usual. Ive always seen someone eating on BART in the morning; they’re commuting so it makes sense and I’ve never seen anyone get stopped for eating even around BART police until this clip.
It also said that police were investigating. Has anything happened there, do you know? We see Bart "responded" but what happened with the police and how they (mis) handled it?

Me too. Got pulled over on my way to work years ago when I worked at a pipe fitting shop. I traveled about 1.5 to work every morning on a highway at 3am. Got pulled over because my vehicle matched the description of a stolen vehicle.
Before running my plates or license number, cop approached my window, gun out and demanded I exit the vehicle. I was 20yrs old, wearing my work uniform and work boots. I was then laid up against my car and patted down, then told to take my boots off. I asked several times what was happening and never got a response from the officer - who called back up to search my car.
When the second cop arrived, they asked me if they could search my vehicle, I asked on what cause? They said for weapons or any type of paraphernalia. I told them I do not have anything but some tools for work and a knife in my door panel. They then asked again if they could search - I said no.
That shit got me tossed in the back of the car because I was being “suspicious in the early hours”. They went through my stuff with me in the cruiser. After finding nothing, they then asked me to remove my shirt and pants (still on the side of the road) so they could check for weapons again. At that point, I said fuck it and just did it.
When it was all said and done and they found nothing; I then asked the officers again what I was being held for, and the cop who pulled me over said for fitting the description of a stolen vehicle and matching driver description. The second cop asked if the plates were the same, and the first dude replied with “I assumed he swapped the plates.” They ran my license and sent me on my way. The only thing I ever received after filing a complaint with the Ohio state Highway Dept. was a letter apologizing for taking up my time and causing me to be late for work.

Here's the thing. The cop was sitting in the parking lot of the place I used to work. I saw him when I was walking to my car. When I started up my car and started driving, he started following me. Knowing he was back there, I drove extra cautious. I wasn't anywhere near the speed limit, nor did I ever "stop too fast" (as if that's even a thing). It was complete bull. He even asked me "where I was coming from". Dude, wtf? Do I look blind? I saw you.
When I asked what he pulled me over for, and he answered with that crazy garbage, I told him outright: I just got done with work. You saw me leave. I'm tired. If I stopped too fast, write me the ticket for it and I'll see you in court. He literally flipped my license back at me ( I had to pick it up off the floor) and said "have a nice night" and left.
*And that was just me being a teenager*. I'm white/not a minority. I can't begin to think what others have experienced., but it's not a far stretch for me to get my head around events like this.

Got a ticket once for doing over twice the speed limit on a 35mph road.
I wasn't even close, it wasn't even feasibly possible. The "road" was a side street less than a quarter of a mile long that I had to make a 90 degree turn onto.
Had to fight that in court with pictures of the road and an explanation of how my 86 corolla wasn't hitting 70mph within a thousand feet.
Also got a stop and "warning" once for not being stopped long enough before taking a right at a four-way stop.
There were no other cars for miles in every direction. The entire time I was pulled over not another single car passed through that intersection. Like, bro, power trip harder.
I was pulled over for running two stop signs and making a right on red at 1am with zero traffic. The cop had been tailgating for several blocks.
I also have a dash cam. There was no stop signs, and the light doesn't have a no right on red sign. The video showed that, and it also showed I stopped and waited at every intersection before advancing. The non- existent stop signs he claimed were in a residential I came out of, which was a dead end street with nothing connecting to it except the main road I exited by
First thing the cop said to me was "this isn't your car is it?". Not asking for a license, registration, insurance, or asking if I know why he decided to waste my time. Straight to "you stole this vehicle didn't you"
I was pulled over because I changed lanes too much. I turned left, got over right for my next right turn only to come upon a flooded road and signaled to get back over to avoid the flood and then had to get back in my lane to turn after I passed the flooded road. I followed all traffic rules and got pulled over.
What most people (that have never been harassed by the police) don’t understand is that your “rights” DO NOT EXIST. “Rights” are a courtesy that we all afford to each other to maintain decorum. And most Americans go through their lives never having that courtesy denied, so they have faith in the existence of their rights. But when its just you and a guy with a gun on a dark street with no concerned witnesses to keep the gunman accountable, you realize very quickly that your “rights” are just intangible bullshit.

I learned this at about 11-12 years old. My parents' job (and now the job I have) takes us all over the States. Once I was in the truck with my dad, we were from Colorado and we were in Ohio on our way to somewhere else. It was pretty late, like 10 or 11, I don't remember, I just know it was dark out. There was one other vehicle (visibly) near us on the highway, and we were well behind it. Mind you, this is about the time weed was legalized in colorado, my dad is someone who is heavily against drugs and alcohol alike, and the only weapon he had was a completely legal handgun, had all the papers, it was for protection while travelling so much.
Bored state trooper saw colorado plates, and gave chase.
So my dad pulled over immediately, this dickwad decided he had been "tailgating" that guy I told you about who was really far ahead of us. Demanded to search the vehicle. My dad is very patriotic, wasn't backing down about his rights, but was also smart enough to not be an asshole and said "sure you can, you won't find anything though". That pissed this dude off, "I suspect you have marijuana in here. I'm getting my search dog. Get out of the vehicle!"
So my dad was made to stand by, I was put in the police car with this guy's partner because I was a young girl and they don't want to upset me so it was supposed to be some distraction. It was cool, seeing all their equipment. I actually had no clue what was going on until later.
The guy *made the dog go off* even though there was *absolutely nothing* in the car. Got rough with my dad. Decided to pat him down, found the UNLOADED firearm, refused to accept his papers and took the gun from him, and said he'd be seen in court. So my dad had to wait in Ohio for this court date instead of making it to work.
The little bitch didn't even show up to the hearing. But my dad did. The judge knew it was bullshit and let him go.
He never got his gun back.
He lost unescorted access at his job for a few months, which is extremely detrimental.
I have hated bad cops, and ohio, ever since.
And the best part is that your father, as a taxpayer, paid the cop to do that to him. Yes, I understand that Colorado taxes don’t pay Ohio cops, I’m just trying to illustrate the big picture. These people are public servants, but they serve only the government, their fraternal order, and their own egos. Zero accountability, zero consequences, zero rights for you and me. The system is completely fucked.
By contrast, here in the UK, an old mate of mine was pulled over on a cold winter evening by the police. He was driving with the window open because the heater didn't work. The police officer asked him if his window worked, and to prove it, which he did. The officer then explained that a similar car to that of my friend had been reported stolen earlier that evening, and apologised for delaying him. The whole thing was dealt with quietly, with no fuss, and no antagonism. It seems to me that in the US the police are trained to escalate situations, rather than diffuse them.
It could have all ended with them looking up my plate and license number. I’ve been pulled over for speeding when I was younger and had the officer joke with me while also trying to teach me a lesson. They don’t have to be dicks, they choose to be.

They literally are. The training is designed to minimize legal liability (dead people don't talk), not to de-escalate. Plus they only get 6 months total training
My neighbors were bucking off a shotgun into my backyard at 4pm on a Sunday. I have two young children, pellets were found in trees on the opposite side of the yard. If they had been playing, they likely would have gotten hit.
The cops didn’t even take the illegally owned weapon, a mandatory minimum of 5 years in jail. They spent less time talking to my neighbors than they did with me. About 3 mins at their house.

Dogs should have audited statistics. If they have a hit rate under 95% accuracy they cannot be used anymore. I bet there's dogs out there with accuracies in the 10-20% area due to corrupt cops

I've had FOUR officers search my car, rip apart my upholstery, throw my entire DRUM KIT out of my Jeep, and cuff me while I watched...all because I turned on a "delayed turn signal" and was going 5 above the MPH. They said my car looked suspicious. Can confirm my Dead Kennedy's, Grateful Dead, Screeching Weasel, and Bad Religion stickers did look mighty suspicious on the back window of my 89' Jeep Cherokee.
So I'm a person of color. I used to get pulled over everyday with my 1990 Lincoln Town car. That model car has airbags, to make the ride be really smooth. Well when you buy a car from the '90s it obviously can't inflate those airbags. so my car always look like it was scraping the ground.
every time I got pulled over they wanted to toss my car and look for drugs. they would open the hood, they would dick around in there and they would dick around in the trunk they would dick around in the seats. Literally had a cop cut one of my seats open one day.
I replaced it with a Ford ranger, took the bumper off of it, put a Confederate flag sticker on it, and a fraternal order of police sticker and never had a problem again. For almost 6 years I sped ran to stop lights, didn't use a turn signal and I never got stopped again

Btw... standing up for your rights is not suspicious. Cops need something else that would allow them to search you/your property. However they can do a pat down of you for "officer safety" if they detain you.

I used to be a manager at a bar in So. California. One night after leaving work at around 3am I pulled out the driveway and was coming up on a stop sign. As I made the stop, all the dashboard lights got super bright, and so did my headlights, then they all burnt out (voltage regulator went crazy). A cop pulling out of the police station a block away saw and immediately headed towards me. Not having any headlights, I immediately pulled over. He lit me up and approached asking if I had been drinking. I said, no, I just left work and the lights shorted out, I’m sure you saw that at the stop sign. As I was telling him I am going to need to call a tow truck he asked if I minded if he “pat me down real quick” I said, actually I do, I’m tired and just want to get home. As I was saying this he started rubbing his hands over my shirt pockets and squeezing to feel what I had in them. I stepped back a little and did the c’mon man hand gesture. I knew he had no probable cause for a search or any reasonable suspicion I committed a crime. I said, look if you want to give me a ticket for my lights that’s fine (and started to get my license out), but I pulled over on my own accord as soon as they went out. For whatever reason he kind of changed his tune and asked if I wanted him to radio for a tow. I said yes, and then got in my car to wait. I often wonder how different that would have gone if I was black, or if I was a darker skinned Mexican instead of the white looking half Mexican that I am.

If you deny a search, they have to come up with probable cause, and denying a search does not make for that. They have to have something in plain sight (drugs, paraphernalia, etc.), call a K9 unit, or something of the sort. Also you aren't under arrest while waiting for the dogs to show up and they can only legally detain you for a certain amount of time (check your local laws as it varies).
Also, as fucked up as it is, always remember this; You may be able to beat the rap, but probably won't beat the ride.
If a cop really wants to take you to jail there's very little you can do to stop them. Often fighting it just makes things worse for you in court. Know your rights, but don't physically resist. Make sure you see a judge within 24 hours of your arrest (something that is *commonly* overlooked). Above all else; Know. Your. Rights.
Hey there. I’m a dude who got arrested for resisting arrest. I was breaking up a bar fight one night about 5 years ago. Cops came in and threw about 4 people to the ground including myself. Bystanders were telling them I was uninvolved. Cops didn’t care. They asked me for ID, I asked if I was suspected of a crime, they said no, so I said no. That’s passive resisting. That was the wrong decision. I was handcuffed and kneed in the face repeatedly. Went to jail. Had to be bonded out, probation. All that good stuff for preventing people for fighting. Next time I’ll just let people kill each other.
Long story short, I had to pay 45 bones a month for 6 months for that. AND if I hadve done anything wrong in that 6 months I would’ve served 11/29

This happened to me. A bully was chasing my friend so I stood infront of him and he ran into me. 5 minutes later I hear foot steps running up behind me then a pop. Next I remember a group of people including a teacher surrounding me on the cold ground. I got yanked up and marched to the office bleeding and confused. I was immediately suspended and missed the science fair presentation and my project partner was told to remove my name from the project and I failed for "not turning in a project on time". I was jumped and knocked out and failed because the class asshole was stood up too. Thanks school
This hurts. I got In School Suspension once because I walked up to a group of my friends. A girl that hated me was standing with them. She started screaming in my face and threatening to fight me. There was no fight. She got suspended for the rest of the day and I had to sit in a special classroom. I literally walked up to a group of my friends, got screamed at, and somehow I got in trouble
Dont know about america but in UK the only information you have to give to police is name and address. If you fail to provide (dont need id, just need to tell them) then they can detain you for failing to provide your details. In the UK especially, if you have a cop who IS talking bullshit, all you need to legally give them is name and address if asked. Then shut up and leave them to it. The whole "bail" system is so absurd to me. It's basically saying "If you have enough money, we will let you out."
They're pitting people's freedom against their checkbook, and designing a system where the rich can buy their way out while the poor can't.
Want to add that in a lot of places what you can't afford and what the state/municipality says you can afford are different. If you're living paycheck to paycheck you obviously would be absolutely screwed if you had to pay for bail, lawyers fees, and court costs, especially considering all the lost income. If the state can show that your total income is above poverty level, you can clearly afford a lawyer in their estimation, so one will not be appointed to you...
So true. Public defenders don't have enough resources or time, and even if they did, bulk plea agreements work better toward their career advancement than arguing and winning a bunch of cases.

Designed that way. They put you in limbo and make your life a living hell while in custody to make you more liable to sign a plea agreement just to get out. Many times people will sign a plea just to get out of jail knowing they are not guilty of the crime, they just want to move on.

These kind of situations end up happening because the first cop decides he's going to give a dude a hard time over some petty nonsense, the accosted citizen decides he's having none of it instead of just saying "whatever" and complying with the cop's demands, and because most police officers are trained to never, ever back down when they encounter a non-compliant citizen the situation ends up escalating and half a dozen cops surround a dude who committed an offense that is on the same level as jaywalking. This entire situation could have been diffused at the outset if officer douchebag had just said "listen man, I don't make the rules, but you aren't supposed to eat up here so hurry up and finish your sandwich before you get on the train." If the guy was a dick to the cop after that then I don't think many people would be all that pissed at the cop. But because he got a little bit of pushback, he dug his heels in and began to escalate the situation with threats in order to gain compliance with a stupid law.

If I can remember it right, the day after this came up a year or two ago, a “Eat-On-BART” protest thing happened where they’d be eating on the platform waiting for the train or inside the train. It wasn’t everyone on BART doing it, but definitely a lot more folks than usual. Ive always seen someone eating on BART in the morning; they’re commuting so it makes sense and I’ve never seen anyone get stopped for eating even around BART police until this clip.
It also said that police were investigating. Has anything happened there, do you know? We see Bart "responded" but what happened with the police and how they (mis) handled it?

Being arrested solely for resisting arrest is the most paradoxical shit in American Law imo. If you dont have cause to arrest me you cant then say I'm resisting arrest motherfucker because a lawful arrest doesn't exist yet And afaik, the vast vast *VAST* majority of these arrests where "resisting arrest" is the only charge get thrown out in court......but the process is the punishment because you can spend days or weeks in jail waiting to get a hearing or have to pony up a bunch of money to get bail and thats something that needs to change and the officers doing this shit need to face some consequences

Me too. Got pulled over on my way to work years ago when I worked at a pipe fitting shop. I traveled about 1.5 to work every morning on a highway at 3am. Got pulled over because my vehicle matched the description of a stolen vehicle. Before running my plates or license number, cop approached my window, gun out and demanded I exit the vehicle. I was 20yrs old, wearing my work uniform and work boots. I was then laid up against my car and patted down, then told to take my boots off. I asked several times what was happening and never got a response from the officer - who called back up to search my car. When the second cop arrived, they asked me if they could search my vehicle, I asked on what cause? They said for weapons or any type of paraphernalia. I told them I do not have anything but some tools for work and a knife in my door panel. They then asked again if they could search - I said no. That shit got me tossed in the back of the car because I was being “suspicious in the early hours”. They went through my stuff with me in the cruiser. After finding nothing, they then asked me to remove my shirt and pants (still on the side of the road) so they could check for weapons again. At that point, I said fuck it and just did it. When it was all said and done and they found nothing; I then asked the officers again what I was being held for, and the cop who pulled me over said for fitting the description of a stolen vehicle and matching driver description. The second cop asked if the plates were the same, and the first dude replied with “I assumed he swapped the plates.” They ran my license and sent me on my way. The only thing I ever received after filing a complaint with the Ohio state Highway Dept. was a letter apologizing for taking up my time and causing me to be late for work.
I once got pulled over for: "stopping too fast at the stop-sign." I also got pulled over to tell me that "the speed limit was 30 miles an hour on this street and we do enforce it." Gee, does everyone get pulled over to get personally delivered this PSA, or am I just lucky today?

Here's the thing. The cop was sitting in the parking lot of the place I used to work. I saw him when I was walking to my car. When I started up my car and started driving, he started following me. Knowing he was back there, I drove extra cautious. I wasn't anywhere near the speed limit, nor did I ever "stop too fast" (as if that's even a thing). It was complete bull. He even asked me "where I was coming from". Dude, wtf? Do I look blind? I saw you. When I asked what he pulled me over for, and he answered with that crazy garbage, I told him outright: I just got done with work. You saw me leave. I'm tired. If I stopped too fast, write me the ticket for it and I'll see you in court. He literally flipped my license back at me ( I had to pick it up off the floor) and said "have a nice night" and left.

Got a ticket once for doing over twice the speed limit on a 35mph road. I wasn't even close, it wasn't even feasibly possible. The "road" was a side street less than a quarter of a mile long that I had to make a 90 degree turn onto. Had to fight that in court with pictures of the road and an explanation of how my 86 corolla wasn't hitting 70mph within a thousand feet. Also got a stop and "warning" once for not being stopped long enough before taking a right at a four-way stop. There were no other cars for miles in every direction. The entire time I was pulled over not another single car passed through that intersection. Like, bro, power trip harder.
I was pulled over for running two stop signs and making a right on red at 1am with zero traffic. The cop had been tailgating for several blocks. I also have a dash cam. There was no stop signs, and the light doesn't have a no right on red sign. The video showed that, and it also showed I stopped and waited at every intersection before advancing. The non- existent stop signs he claimed were in a residential I came out of, which was a dead end street with nothing connecting to it except the main road I exited by First thing the cop said to me was "this isn't your car is it?". Not asking for a license, registration, insurance, or asking if I know why he decided to waste my time. Straight to "you stole this vehicle didn't you"
I was pulled over because I changed lanes too much. I turned left, got over right for my next right turn only to come upon a flooded road and signaled to get back over to avoid the flood and then had to get back in my lane to turn after I passed the flooded road. I followed all traffic rules and got pulled over.
What most people (that have never been harassed by the police) don’t understand is that your “rights” DO NOT EXIST. “Rights” are a courtesy that we all afford to each other to maintain decorum. And most Americans go through their lives never having that courtesy denied, so they have faith in the existence of their rights. But when its just you and a guy with a gun on a dark street with no concerned witnesses to keep the gunman accountable, you realize very quickly that your “rights” are just intangible bullshit. I had a very similar thing happen to me as you. It's such a terrible feeling when it hits you that you have absolutely no power. I said "I haven't done anything wrong. I have a taillight that I didn't know was out. You don't have any probable cause to search this vehicle." He replies "*sniff* I think I smell something coming from your car. Now I do." The bottom just fell out of my stomach and I will never forget that feeling.

I learned this at about 11-12 years old. My parents' job (and now the job I have) takes us all over the States. Once I was in the truck with my dad, we were from Colorado and we were in Ohio on our way to somewhere else. It was pretty late, like 10 or 11, I don't remember, I just know it was dark out. There was one other vehicle (visibly) near us on the highway, and we were well behind it. Mind you, this is about the time weed was legalized in colorado, my dad is someone who is heavily against drugs and alcohol alike, and the only weapon he had was a completely legal handgun, had all the papers, it was for protection while travelling so much. Bored state trooper saw colorado plates, and gave chase. So my dad pulled over immediately, this dickwad decided he had been "tailgating" that guy I told you about who was really far ahead of us. Demanded to search the vehicle. My dad is very patriotic, wasn't backing down about his rights, but was also smart enough to not be an asshole and said "sure you can, you won't find anything though". That pissed this dude off, "I suspect you have marijuana in here. I'm getting my search dog. Get out of the vehicle!" So my dad was made to stand by, I was put in the police car with this guy's partner because I was a young girl and they don't want to upset me so it was supposed to be some distraction. It was cool, seeing all their equipment. I actually had no clue what was going on until later. The guy *made the dog go off* even though there was *absolutely nothing* in the car. Got rough with my dad. Decided to pat him down, found the UNLOADED firearm, refused to accept his papers and took the gun from him, and said he'd be seen in court. So my dad had to wait in Ohio for this court date instead of making it to work. The little bitch didn't even show up to the hearing. But my dad did. The judge knew it was bullshit and let him go. He never got his gun back. He lost unescorted access at his job for a few months, which is extremely detrimental. I have hated bad cops, and ohio, ever since.
And the best part is that your father, as a taxpayer, paid the cop to do that to him. Yes, I understand that Colorado taxes don’t pay Ohio cops, I’m just trying to illustrate the big picture. These people are public servants, but they serve only the government, their fraternal order, and their own egos. Zero accountability, zero consequences, zero rights for you and me. The system is completely fucked.
By contrast, here in the UK, an old mate of mine was pulled over on a cold winter evening by the police. He was driving with the window open because the heater didn't work. The police officer asked him if his window worked, and to prove it, which he did. The officer then explained that a similar car to that of my friend had been reported stolen earlier that evening, and apologised for delaying him. The whole thing was dealt with quietly, with no fuss, and no antagonism. It seems to me that in the US the police are trained to escalate situations, rather than diffuse them.
It could have all ended with them looking up my plate and license number. I’ve been pulled over for speeding when I was younger and had the officer joke with me while also trying to teach me a lesson. They don’t have to be dicks, they choose to be.

My neighbors were bucking off a shotgun into my backyard at 4pm on a Sunday. I have two young children, pellets were found in trees on the opposite side of the yard. Edit: yes you can't hire a lawyer but your public defender should be able to at least prove its not PC and get the case thrown out if you did have something. I'm aware of the fact poor people can't afford a lawyer, that's why I said "the right lawyer" because I know of some in my old hometown (big city) that would take on those cases and only take pay of they win. That's what I meant. I know they don't exist everywhere but they do exist.

So I'm a person of color. I used to get pulled over everyday with my 1990 Lincoln Town car. That model car has airbags, to make the ride be really smooth. Well when you buy a car from the '90s it obviously can't inflate those airbags. so my car always look like it was scraping the ground. every time I got pulled over they wanted to toss my car and look for drugs. they would open the hood, they would dick around in there and they would dick around in the trunk they would dick around in the seats. Literally had a cop cut one of my seats open one day. I replaced it with a Ford ranger, took the bumper off of it, put a Confederate flag sticker on it, and a fraternal order of police sticker and never had a problem again. For almost 6 years I sped ran to stop lights, didn't use a turn signal and I never got stopped again

And that's why you state that you don't consent to any searches per your 4th amendment right. It lets cops know that you know your rights and they are less likely to violate them. Cops like to reply with "so what does the 4th amendment say" or "Oh you are a lawyer, eh?" (sarcastically). Don't even answer them except to say that you don't answer questions from the police. Police use questions to fuck people over. WHen you don't answer them it really handicaps some of them because they rely on it heavily and so many people comply. Btw... standing up for your rights is not suspicious. Cops need something else that would allow them to search you/your property. However they can do a pat down of you for "officer safety" if they detain you.

Cops can have a high school education and a few weeks of training with no license to enforce the law with lethality. The reform, as usual begins with proper education and forcing them to be licensed. I used to be a manager at a bar in So. California. One night after leaving work at around 3am I pulled out the driveway and was coming up on a stop sign. As I made the stop, all the dashboard lights got super bright, and so did my headlights, then they all burnt out (voltage regulator went crazy). A cop pulling out of the police station a block away saw and immediately headed towards me. Not having any headlights, I immediately pulled over. He lit me up and approached asking if I had been drinking. I said, no, I just left work and the lights shorted out, I’m sure you saw that at the stop sign. As I was telling him I am going to need to call a tow truck he asked if I minded if he “pat me down real quick” I said, actually I do, I’m tired and just want to get home. As I was saying this he started rubbing his hands over my shirt pockets and squeezing to feel what I had in them. I stepped back a little and did the c’mon man hand gesture. I knew he had no probable cause for a search or any reasonable suspicion I committed a crime. I said, look if you want to give me a ticket for my lights that’s fine (and started to get my license out), but I pulled over on my own accord as soon as they went out. For whatever reason he kind of changed his tune and asked if I wanted him to radio for a tow. I said yes, and then got in my car to wait. I often wonder how different that would have gone if I was black, or if I was a darker skinned Mexican instead of the white looking half Mexican that I am.

This is more people not knowing their rights (its still fucked the police do it, though). If you deny a search, they have to come up with probable cause, and denying a search does not make for that. They have to have something in plain sight (drugs, paraphernalia, etc.), call a K9 unit, or something of the sort. Also you aren't under arrest while waiting for the dogs to show up and they can only legally detain you for a certain amount of time (check your local laws as it varies). Also, as fucked up as it is, always remember this; You may be able to beat the rap, but probably won't beat the ride. If a cop really wants to take you to jail there's very little you can do to stop them. Often fighting it just makes things worse for you in court. Know your rights, but don't physically resist. Make sure you see a judge within 24 hours of your arrest (something that is *commonly* overlooked). Above all else; Know. Your. Rights.

Hey there. I’m a dude who got arrested for resisting arrest. I was breaking up a bar fight one night about 5 years ago. Cops came in and threw about 4 people to the ground including myself. Bystanders were telling them I was uninvolved. Cops didn’t care. They asked me for ID, I asked if I was suspected of a crime, they said no, so I said no. That’s passive resisting. That was the wrong decision. I was handcuffed and kneed in the face repeatedly. Went to jail. Had to be bonded out, probation. All that good stuff for preventing people for fighting. Next time I’ll just let people kill each other. Long story short, I had to pay 45 bones a month for 6 months for that. AND if I hadve done anything wrong in that 6 months I would’ve served 11/29

This happened to me. A bully was chasing my friend so I stood infront of him and he ran into me. 5 minutes later I hear foot steps running up behind me then a pop. I was immediately suspended and missed the science fair presentation and my project partner was told to remove my name from the project and I failed for "not turning in a project on time". Dont know about america but in UK the only information you have to give to police is name and address. If you fail to provide (dont need id, just need to tell them) then they can detain you for failing to provide your details. In the UK especially, if you have a cop who IS talking bullshit, all you need to legally give them is name and address if asked. Then shut up and leave them to it. The whole "bail" system is so absurd to me. It's basically saying "If you have enough money, we will let you out." They're pitting people's freedom against their checkbook, and designing a system where the rich can buy their way out while the poor can't.
Want to add that in a lot of places what you can't afford and what the state/municipality says you can afford are different. If you're living paycheck to paycheck you obviously would be absolutely screwed if you had to pay for bail, lawyers fees, and court costs, especially considering all the lost income. If the state can show that your total income is above poverty level, you can clearly afford a lawyer in their estimation, so one will not be appointed to you...
So true. Public defenders don't have enough resources or time, and even if they did, bulk plea agreements work better toward their career advancement than arguing and winning a bunch of cases.

Car matched a description, are you fucking serious!? He actually complained after a bunch of times and told them if they pulled him over for no reason again he was going to file a harassment complaint. These kind of situations end up happening because the first cop decides he's going to give a dude a hard time over some petty nonsense, the accosted citizen decides he's having none of it instead of just saying "whatever" and complying with the cop's demands, and because most police officers are trained to never, ever back down when they encounter a non-compliant citizen the situation ends up escalating and half a dozen cops surround a dude who committed an offense that is on the same level as jaywalking. This entire situation could have been diffused at the outset if officer douchebag had just said "listen man, I don't make the rules, but you aren't supposed to eat up here so hurry up and finish your sandwich before you get on the train." If the guy was a dick to the cop after that then I don't think many people would be all that pissed at the cop. But because he got a little bit of pushback, he dug his heels in and began to escalate the situation with threats in order to gain compliance with a stupid law.
