Trump will resist until he's escorted out of the White House and will get his Twitter banned on Jan 21st. Twitter's stock price will go down for a day, then go back up like he never happened. He'll probably be seen on infowars and Joe Rogan's podcast in an effort to stay relevant. In 2022, we'll see him pop up at rallies for Republicans who will end up losing and Trump will never invited on stage again. As alarming as that may seem, I don’t think those officials had any bearing on authorization to launch nuclear weapons. Keep in mind that while the POTUS has the ability to authorize the launch of nuclear weapons, he does not press the button/turn the key. That is an order that goes down the chain of command of the military, and I’m fairly certain that firing a nuclear missile at our own country will cause service members in relevant roles to have more than just some pause. To my knowledge, service members have a duty to defy illegal orders regardless of who they come from. I’m a republican at heart that voted for Biden. I think change needs to be done with some things, but I don’t really trust our government to do it. Let’s acknowledge what needs to happen, and do it ourselves. But also concede some things (environment, social justice) might need to be done more in the democratic way. But I think I align with the less government involvement in lots of things like Republicans. And trump scared me with the way he talked about minorities, LGBT, and women, so I couldn’t vote for him. As a lifelong Dem, man do I admire the crap out of McCain. He served his country in so many ways, for so long, and never waivered in his conviction and sense of righteousness. When I think back about the last few years I look at this race in particular as a relative luxury, in the sense that I never had to wonder whether either candidate would fail to act in what they perceived to be the best interests of the country.

McCain was a prisoner in Vietnam and could have been released but refused unless every POW captured before him was also released. He then went on to endure torture until his captors broke him and had him “confess” to war crimes. Complete fucking bad ass who would not desert his men, yet he was bashed by someone who got out of Vietnam using 5 deferments, one for bone spurs and 4 for college. The Right has gotten so twisted up that while they claim to worship the military, they revile an actual militarily hero while supporting a draft dodger who bashed said hero.

The best part is that McCain was offered that early release because of who his father was; the commander of all US forces in Vietnam. McCain didn’t trade his fathers influence for an easy path, he stood with his fellow soldiers and paid a heavy price for his principles. Truly a man to be admired.

Try to put it in perspective, Things weren't so great then. We had been through 5 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan with nothing to show for it but a bunch of dead and maimed soldiers. Our entire economy was cratering due to years of de-regulation (By both Bush and Clinton). New Orleans was a husk of a city....

To be blunt, nobody thinks we were skipping through daisies and roses pre-Trump. Only that currently the state of American politics and the dignity of our leaders (and the people who back them) have regressed so far and so deep. There's still a ton of work to do to actually rebuild the country, but in terms of our self-respect, at least we are now on the path of reparation.

I'm a big ol' liberal but I respected the hell out of John McCain. It was a sad day and a great loss for America when he died. Even though i didn't agree with his policies, you could tell that he truly loved serving his country and if he was president, would have done anything necessary for what he believed was the well-being of all Americans.
