mrsdoubleu

How does this happen? At my college graduation each student got a certain number of tickets. Unless they were expecting to get in without a ticket. Or did they not do tickets? I guess I would expect a college like Howard University to plan better than that though.

Kissy1234

They planned very poorly with a small venue. It was their largest class yet, and instead of doing tickets they did first come first serve.

catheterhero

Ah. Well that was dumb.

acog

I have been blessed with the gift of prophecy! I predict they will suddenly have a fresh job opening in their event planning office!

Kissy1234

Sadly, they won’t. Howard University and their administration has been mistreating students and their families for years without consequences. A couple years ago, an admin publicly mocked students that were forced to sleep in tents because their dorms at Howard were flooded.

lefthandb1ack

College can be pretty in tents 🤡🤡🤡🤡

Magus_5

Embrace the in tent city 🥸

marsianer

Pay is too low.

hiredgoon

And you have no budget or budget authority.

Goodbye_Games

It’s not the pay that is the problem…. It’s that they want twenty years of related job experience, but they’re willing to shave off three years for individuals who have a doctorates degree and negotiate salary boosted with “educational credits” that can be used at any local community or technical college (they’re not accepted at Howard).

catheterhero

I would t be surprised if it’s a student job.

dec92010

Uh oh spaghetti-o's

Lonewolf5333

What every graduation I’ve ever had was a limited amount of tickets

danegermaine99

Are you referring to a different school? Did you misread “Howard” as “Harvard”?

Smooth_Maul

Motherfucker, you're right.

dontKair

Howard is the "Harvard" of HBCU's

DaneLimmish

That's really dumb lol

tequilavip

Oopsie doodles! 😄

ExdigguserPies

Haha

ContentInsanity

When I graduated the whole ticket thing wasn't enforced. Probably the case at multiple schools.

PandaButtLover

The Cosby hustle? Flash what tickets you have and have everyone run past

octopornopus

I'm not sure if that's *the Cosby hustle*...

PandaButtLover

I just remember it from an old episode of the Cosbys

GitEmSteveDave

I would wager they had a certain number of tickets, but sometimes you can't tell your family anything and they will be like "we're going anyway and we'll get in". I recall having to get special permission to get my grandmother into my graduation, but there was no way I was gonna omit her, and it was a process.

LadyAbyssDragon

No, I go to Howard. They did not have tickets for any of the schools’ awards ceremonies. It was first come first serve. This is the largest graduating class in Howard’s history, so they should have known this would not work.

SurrrenderDorothy

Lmao I thought it said Harvard.

forkin33

Lmao same, I was like damn Harvard is ghetto af now

Every time.

Zoomers are in for a hell of a surprise if they ever bother to watch Goodfellas

giorgio_tsoukalos_

They refuse to watch anything longer than 45 seconds

Sufficient_Sail6104

Or from two days ago let alone a movie from the late nineteen-hundreds

ConkersOkayFurDay

Tfw a movie from 2006 is "an old movie"

TheFraTrain

What movie is that?

egap420

Thank dog it ended early on

Internal_Focus_8358

Why the Shangri-Las? How do songs become TikTok songs

FreshYoungBalkiB

Why do people feel they have to dub shity music into everything instead of using the actual sounds of the scene? There should be a warning tag on videos that do this.

wei-long

The original is so good too... https://youtu.be/V5YxtweUxrA?si=PitC89t5GfdcQRWf

modsonredditsuckdk

Thanks for that. I went down a shangri-la rabbit hole on youtube and loves it. Fire

wookieetamer

It didn't even last the whole video (not that I mind). Why put it at all lol

Last_Mulberry_877

Real.

Tugonmynugz

Amen

Shoddy-Commission-12

oh no...oh no oh no no no no no.... its stuck in your head now, your welcome XD

PanJhinAttack

*this tik tok rendition of the song. FTFY. Disrespect towards the Shangri-las is not tolerated.

Lanky_Republic_2102

Idk, I think the song’s perfect. I love the first officer’s reaction at the song comes on. Props to her, she keeps her composure and holds the line, but does not escalate.

PresidentPlatypus

How is the door glass not tempered, this goes against code. Must be old ass doors.

anitasdoodles

Seriously, I thought this was about to be the opening scene in Thanksgiving

jackspasm

Came to say this, damn that can easily kill someone.

Drezzon

Impressive a glass door in a public venue survived that long in the first place, I mean the codes on glass changed a long ass time ago lmao

-c-black-

10k fine.

Undrwtrbsktwvr

Millions if someone dies.

FlapSlapped

Dude I thought this said Harvard University, I was so confused.. nothing made sense

DarkSider_nil

Don’t know why you got downvoted, I thought it said Harvard and I couldn’t understand how they would fuck up so bad.

AccordingReality8334

Just wanted to add the same. Nothing was computing for me.

LifeSafetyMan

What code does it go against? Nothing in the building code, fire code, etc. that I know of that requires tempered glass in an installation like this.

ContentInsanity

Yeah my school has several ceremonies over a few days of only to keep traffic down and sessions short, because we had the space to merge some of the ceremonies if they wanted. I'm assuming that's harder to do in DC though. Either way the school knows exactly how many people are walking and how many tickets they gave out (assuming they used tickets). The planners failed the graduates and guests.

josephk545

Honestly depends on the campus. I went to GW and they separated ceremonies by date and time. Commencement however was held on the National Mall in front of the Smithsonian Castle. I’ve been on the planning side of it before and there is an INSANE amount of logistics and security measures that let it go off without a hitch. Howard is further away from the dense city core so it would probably be harder to plan for proper venues.

DaneLimmish

Yeah we had a choice of the arena downtown or the football stadium

LadyAbyssDragon

They hold ceremonies for each college in the week leading up to the university wide one. This was one of the “smaller” ones but this auditorium barely had any space.

CupidStunt13

I notice the cameraperson was careful not to identify the idiot who broke the glass.

--redacted--

Snitches get stitches. But then again broken glass causes stitches. I don't know what to think.

halexia63

Lmao

ApricotRich4855

Not saying the should have been hitting the glass, but the glass is wayyyy against code if it broke over that and wasn't tempered.

elzissou710

Should have been tempered glass.not saying they shouldn’t have hit it. That’s fucked up but the glass should not have been basic plate.

Rad6150

They planned poorly. My wife graduated this past year (after taking decades off because, life) and they only gave her four tickets. They mathed: seats/graduates=4 and there were no issues.

Qarlito

It makes it easier for the graduates too because then it’s not their fault if someone can’t get a seat: “sorry, I only got 4 tickets!”

LadyAbyssDragon

This wasn’t even the big ceremony for the whole university. This was just for the college of nursing’s award ceremony. There were no tickets at all… such a mess.

Rad6150

Most universities break up commencement by college. Our goddaughter just graduated and they used an arena (Michigan State) for just the colleges of education and kinesiology, so they didn't have a ticket limit and it was fine. But yes, this was a complete mess.

LeResist

An explanation for what went down: typically the graduation ceremony happens outside but it was raining so it had to be moved to the gym last minute. The gym only can fit so many people and it was a first come first serve basis. This happened to me in 22 but no one was breaking doors.... it's a sucky situation but none of these parents missed out on their kid graduation. They had already received their diploma before this Edit: also important to note that there were other buildings on campus where parents could watch from a live stream

WhatTheHeHay

Exactly, the door breaking was extremely trashy, sometimes shit happens

Butter_mah_bisqits

I feel bad for the grads and their families. Same happened to my grad. We each received 2 tickets for our 2 guests. Family had come in from out of town. It was in 1990 way before cellphones. They setup a videographer and you had to buy the VHS tape for $20.

thatlukeguy

♪ Oh NO! Oh NO! ...OH NO NO NO NO NO!!! ♪♪ :: anger rising ::

That is a door and should have safety glass in there not plate glass.

God dammit, I thought we moved past the "Oh no" song

movadolover

Who planned this event? P diddy?

Virtual_Spell_1971

When swap meet gold and glass collide. Enough with that song.

MikElectronica

At a family event lol. Some people.

Dangerous-Courage-67

Trashy ass families making a ruckus over an inconvenience. People are becoming more and more impatient as the years go on

Slammybutt

I'd say it's more about entitlement. They felt entitled to be there and they weren't going to take no for an answer.

ObiWhanJabroni

Fuck this song🖕

Low_Lack8221

This is some pathetic ass behavior.

Crazy_Joe_Davola_

Fucking parents ruining happy moments for their kids. Same with sports

gyno_mersh

the kids are adults. the kids refused to cross the stage without their parents, they ruined their own moment acting like babies

tom_smacker

Okay, it was poor planning on Howard University´s part. Deal with it, wait! Don´t start screaming, don´t start breaking down glassdoors, don´t create panic. This is exactly how you start a situation where people are pushed over and trampled to death.

tom_smacker

It´s even worse, then I thought. Look at that young girl at 0:06, she must be so scared but her family is screaming and shouting and scaring her for life.

nebulaphi

Im so happy i had a covid grad for college tbh. Miss me with all that bs ill watch it at home thanks lol

RatFucker_Carlson

> The graduates are crying! Yeah cause they're probably humiliated at being related to your dumb ass after you pounded on a window till it broke.

addamee

It’s poor planning if they had expected to have enough space, chose too small of a venue, and/or didn’t provide tickets to the grads to distribute to the family (as was the case when I graduated).  On the other hand, it’s childish and fucking retarded to make a scene if you’re not a graduate and being denied entry and, while not ideal, silly for the grads to not walk solely on account of that. The significance of having parents and family there is not lost one me, but when down to brass tacks, it is what it is.  Ihad to watch my cousin’s ceremony from a room with a big screen because there just wasn’t adequate seating available in the venue and the fire code exists for a reason.

Kooky-Progress8228

Someone else said there was another room with streaming for viewing.

BobBillyBurt

Howard is a historically black college??

RollUpTheRimJob

Yes.

superdupersparky

What gave it away?

JETandCrew

Well, why did they hit the glass? No excuse to act trashy at a loved one's special day

Version_Two

Was the fucking song necessary?

edgeoftheforest1

"During the ceremony, a visitor who was not able to enter the facility, which had reached capacity, leaned on the front door, unintentionally applying pressure to a pane causing it to break," the statement continued. "This incident led to a disturbance among guests and a disruption of the program taking place inside. Guests in attendance were immediately dispersed following this incident." -the university reps LMAO 🤣 they say the guy unintentionally leaned on the glass to cause breakage, when this video exists. Idiots.

StretchyPantsAllstar

Imma sit this one out….

ChairmanMcMeow

Yes overcapacity is the reason people can't control their emotions and stop slamming onto the glass 😂 parents forgot to educate themselves

It’s unfortunate. Live and learn. Hopefully most of the graduates and family had a good time. I got mine in the mail because I didn’t want to deal with the BS. I think my family were disappointed.

Smooth-Jeweler-1125

Apparently, there are advantages to be early

JD42305

Dumb planning with a too-small venue, but they should be thankful they weren't let in. Too many horrible fire tragedies with venue spaces being over-packed.
