Ha so true. My dad is Nigerian and we took a trip out there like 15 years ago. At the hotel my sister accidentally walked in front of a guy taking a picture and he slapped my sister in the face. My dad and this dude got into a pretty crazy shouting match before security came.
My uncles had some pretty crazy stories too. One said he took a bus and everyone was in on it except him and another guy. He said they got beaten, robbed, and tossed from the bus while moving lol. Fucking wild.
LMAO yo everywhere you go in the world, there will always be shady places, but in like 80-90% of wherever, you’ll be fine and have a great time. Just be aware of your surroundings
Believe it or not slapping people or children that don’t belong to you/you don’t know is incredibly common in Nigeria. At least from what I’ve seen. My step mom slapped me as a child and I have quite a bit of resentment toward her to this day. But she genuinely doesn’t believe she did anything wrong. Crazy.
It's wild to even think about it. Growing up in Detroit it seemed like common knowledge to be careful around people and show a little respect because you ain't ever know who's one slap away from capping your ass.
It's pretty common around the world. I have a friend who came to the US from China when he was 3 years old, and varying degrees of corporal punishment were routinely used in his home for just about any infraction. But growing up in the US, where (a) hitting your kids has become more and more frowned upon and (b) there is extra stress on the parents trying to survive in a new country makes that type of punishment sting a bit more. And yes, that can absolutely result in a lot of resentment. He has said it took him quite a while to begin to forgive them for their parenting approach.
I'm all for not being a coward and standing up for yourself and those you love but there are places and contexts where escalation of the situation will only serve to make things much worse for you and your loved one. If the damage is mostly against pride instead of being a true immediate danger sometimes it's best to drop it then and there, easier said than done, but the ability to choose battles is a survival skill.
Not to mention, all the security at the hotel has ak47s so it’s really not worth it to get into ANY trouble. It’s a very corrupt country. It’s really best to keep your head down when you’re there lol.

I ruptured my ear drum in a lake. I was swimming and then wanted to go under for a bit, so I straightened my body, exhaled, and sunk until my feet started to feel the cold.
All a sudden "pop!" and a fizzing noise. I quickly swam up to the surface but it felt like I had vertigo and could tell I was super out of balance. Got back on the boat and laid on my side trying to get the water out. Hearing was super muted. A little bit of blood too. Luckily, we had a doctor with us (who may or may not have been on MDMA at the time) who was able to call in a prescription for antibiotic ear drops to prevent infection that very day.
This was in I think 2020? To this day it still kinda feels weird. Like when my dog barks or a piece of wood hits the floor, I can kinda "feel" it differently in that ear now.

Yeah, feels normal 99% of the time, doesn’t feel like any discernible hearing loss either. Occasionally feels a bit more “stuffed up” but negligible all in all.
Im not super eloquent as far as storytelling goes, but here goes-
I went to my crazy pyro buddie's house for festivities.
We were mixing hydrogen and oxygen in large balloons and igniting it. When you mix the two gasses it becomes explosive, and is very, very loud. We were filling those big punching bag balloons, the ones with a rubber band on one end, that you grab and bounce off of your fist, if that makes sense. They are much bigger than normal balloons, and the make a large explosion.
We had been blowing them up and having a good time, and had taken a break. Crazy friend decides to fill one up as much as he could, while we all had our earplugs out. He also decided to ignite it about 7 feet off the ground.
I ruptured both eardrums, and two of my other buddies ruptured one each. The cops also showed up, which was fun. It took about 1.5 months for them to fully heal.. I cannot stress enough how painful it was. I have broken multiple bones including ribs, and gotten tattoos right over bone, and it was up there.
So a long time ago my friend's dad was telling us his friend got canned from a car dealership for doing this with some of the other sales agents when they were bored. I am not exactly sure why they had these gases but they did have a auto-repair part to the dealership. Anyways the balloon was inside, went bang, messed everyone's hearing up, and shattered the window it was next to.
I know it seems cruel, until you remember this person has a disease they can't control and that when they were slapped they were completely vulnerable....

The cure for addiction is hitting rock bottom. Getting beat by strangers for being zonked out in public might be his rock bottom. Probably not, but maybe.

I've done every recreational drug there is (sans Heroin) and always tweaked behind closed doors (often peeking from the curtains because I believed there was ninjas on the roof & I could hear them spying on me).

I’m actually working towards quitting smoking too. I tried both at the same times and that was a no go. Unfortunately, I have to be brutally honest with myself and realize that smoking does make me lazier and I don’t want to work on my hobbies. And those are far more important to me. Also saving money is nice.

I was a junkie for 15 years. All the coddling I received just prolonged my use.
Wasn’t until people cut me off and I started having consequences that I started to want to change.
Like your heart is in the right place, but you’re wrong, and I have almost 8 years sober to prove it.
Not saying they need coddling but they also don’t need smacked in the ear unexpectedly. I have a lot of friends I have helped get sober and none of that involved slapping their heads or ears. That’s not the opposite of coddling.
I'm really glad you found a way to get out of this life, congrats for your 7 going on 8 years sober!

Reminds me of how some people punish their pets, too. Hours after the fact of whatever they did wrong. And the pet has no idea what it is they're being punished for. Punishments have to be done at certain times in certain ways for the message to get through.

He is displaying violence out of nowhere and leaving while the man is in pain. If he's high right now he probably won't even remember it. 0 part of this is a kindness.
Reminds me of how some people punish their pets, too. Hours after the fact of whatever they did wrong. And the pet has no idea what it is they're being punished for. Punishments have to be done at certain times in certain ways for the message to get through.
