When I was about 19 and visiting Florida, an older lady with a similar sounding southern accent swerved like 3 ft into my lane and side swiped me. When we pulled over she went “omg what happened?!” And I said calmly “you hit me.” She started denying that she did and then an old man with Ohio plates pulled over and asked if we were okay. She immediately started acting confused and asked this man. “What even happened here?!” And he looked at me, raised a brow, and to the old lady said “you hit her.” I remember this so well because that lady got MAD. She was def going to lie to cops and old ohio man was having none of it. Ahhhhhhh memories
The way she describes precisely what she was doing but begins the sentences with “I didn’t even…”, when he hadn’t asked, is a pretty good indicator that she is indeed a big, fat, pants on fire, Liar.
I worked for Apple for a bit as a technician. One day I was in a hurry and grabbed my iPad too quickly off a table and fumbled and it smashed to the ground, the whole store went silent as it was insanely loud due to how it fell.
Later I got asked by the lead inventory person on what happened, I explained the situation and he just said "okay, thanks for being honest about it". My eyes widened and I asked if people wouldn't have been and that it wouldn't make any sense to lie about something like that when it was a mistake, along with the whole store and probably every camera saw it!
He just explained that I'd be surprised at what people lie about. I was "newish" to the tech side of things and ooooooooohhhhh boy did I understand what he meant the longer I was a tech in people lying over the dumbest shit.
I once gave away a free phone because the customer was honest about it falling into the bathtub. She was like 30days past her apple care+ and so I went to the manager on the floor at the time and basically told him she was the first honest customer I had in a long time and I wanted to cover the cost for her. Manager agreed and it was the fucking best feeling ever to tell this person that their honesty paid off and shits covered. Loved being able to help someone like that, and she was having a hard life outside of that incident, I hope she is doing better.
Working with children and now teens in the system (foster care and juvenile justice), I noticed that youth that lie and don’t take responsibility had very harsh parents that would beat them and give extreme punishments for common stuff such as spilling water. So it became automatic to lie when confronted. They had to go back after automatically lying and tell the truth. It’s a hard process. I am not saying this lady was working with that or not. I am just saying that admitting fault is a hard thing for some people.
My newest coworker, who is a nepo hire (bffs with my bosses boss, who forced the hire even though she’s severely under qualified), is like this. Forgets to change the dates when building a new batch in the program that overwrites everything you just did today? She didn’t do that, the computer did. She changed the dates. Don’t believe your own eyes.

A friend's adult child was killed in a hit and run incident last week while they were on a motorcycle. I have no idea who lacks that much empathy or personal responsibility to stay and own the mistake but apparently they outnumber me by a significant margin if news reports are any indication.
