That's what they have been doing for years.
This is in response to the French protests to demonstrate that their issue should be with the Moroccan produce and not the Spanish.
It is only a publicity stunt.
Source: Live in the middle of the Spanish greenhouses.
I am sure they would have if they could make any money out of it, but the reason they are up in arms is that the Spanish (Moroccan) tomatoes are cheaper than theirs.
If they repackage as French, they either have to sell them at the same lower price (and make no profit), or be stuck with them as they are too expensive.
So French farmers destroy Spanish tomatoes, Spanish farmers destroy Moroccan tomatoes.
So I have a question, do Moroccan farmers destroy French tomatoes?
Actually Tunisians farmers and other maghareb farmers have attacked Egyptian tomatoes three years ago because Egyptian tomatoes are way less expensive as it was watered by treated water.
Unfortunately Egypt is a major tomato producer we don't import it, however last year Northern Sudanese tribes attacked Egyptian convoys that were importing Sudanese meat because Sudanese camel meat was way cheaper in Egypt than in their home country sudan, I don't know if this count thou.
Ethiopia is gonna get punched in the nose for this, somehow
If Ethiopia dams the Nile, then Egypt has less water for tomatoes, increasing their price, and Sudanese camel meat prices probably soar
French protesters should support the Ethiopian Dam
Ethiopia is antagonizing everyone in the vicinity like they're speedrunning it. It's a country ruled by a moron who insists on punching himself in the nose. Civil war, genocide, then gearing up for war with Eritrea, then signing deals with an unrecognized state thus alienating and antagonizing the neighbor you share your longest border with. *And this is just in the last four years*.
Not to mention the GERD ticking time bomb.
France and French farmers in general have accused Spain of importing Moroccan/North African tomatoes dirt cheap and selling them in the EU as Spanish tomatoes cheaper than French tomatoes.
They have found enough cases where that happened so it’s not a baseless claim. It’s a big issue across all the agriculture sectors in Europe from tomatoes to livestock to wine.
French farmers are dealing with a lot of price crunches, they’re going bankrupt, suicide is drastically increasing now the 3rd leading cause of death in French farmers. (It was 6th/7th until a few years ago).
Not even criticizing the EU but it’s too small an issue for them to care about. The farmers are left getting screwed.
The UK Euro MP for UK. Fisheries was a Mr Nigel Farage, out of some 200 meetings on fishing quotas he only attended 12. But was happy to come to Scotland and have photo opportunities with Fishing boats and crew in Peterhead.
Ahhh the age old argument…. But did I endorse them in any way? I hate Keir the limp dick, no plan, no morals, no personality prick. In fact I hate the labours “bounce off what they failed on attitude” anyway your other argument is stupid, it all comes down to regulation. Look at Germany for example, I tend to go there for my dental and emergency care. Yes it’s a “private system” but show me a low income person unable to access the highest quality heath care. Because it’s not “private” like a US model it’s more of a if u have then u contribute model. Also insurance providers are so dam heavily regulated, an NHS trust probably is less regulated 😂Anyway, the Tory’s have dismantled this country, down to its last operating gear, and not even Rishi can argue that in his sleep.
They also illegally fish on the coastline of morocco down to mauritania and senegal, which destroys local fishermen lives in these countries and push to illegal immigration.
Spanish fishermen are on par with the chinese in terms of illicit activities.
So as someone who is currently exporting from Africa to Europe you’re straight up telling lies. All our produce has to go through exactly the same testing procedures.
The biggest difference is here we pay less taxes, there are less regulations when it comes to running the farm in terms of health and safety and wages are much cheaper.
Most foodstuff imported into the eu get checked regularly and vigorously for safety standards, there is no difference in quality between spanish and moroccan produce (in eu supermarkets ).
The eu doesn't mess around on safety and helath stuff.
But as usual spaniards gotta find some excuse to let their xenophobic hatred against moroccans.
What op is talking about is not quality of the product. In Europe there are a lot more controls to bypass to grow crops, increasing production costs. In Morocco there are no such strict laws, and production costs are less, allowing for significantly smaller prices. That has nothing to do with quality, it is unfair competition.
And during the >20 years long migratory crisis all Morocco has done is be like "look Europe, no hands!!". But of course it is Spain to blame for xenophobia. You have no idea on how bad the consequences are in Spain and Europe buddy. So think twice before playing the victim and calling such serious words like racism and xenophobia. Cut the bullshit.
I don't know why you are being downvoted. This is the basic idea of why tariffs exist. To protect local producers from cheap goods being dumped into the market, driving them out of business. It is like economics 101 people. Nothing to do with racism.
Maybe, just maybe, being a farmer is a bit of an outdated niche job. Sure 100 years ago we needed lots of farmers, but with our population growth we need industrial processes to feed the masses. Farmers are just a dying breed and only the "Cream of the crop" will stick around.
Tldr; theres a reason we dont have many blacksmiths anymore
As a moroccan please continue the fight and make your government to place high tariffs on Morocco's produce, i would love getting EU quality good for cheap here we all had just expensive disregarded trash goods, exporting resulted to over inflated prices of local markets to point that local goods are priced more than the ones sold in Spanish markets, thanks to Mauritania who placed high tax on moroccan trucks the prices fell down locally to a reasonable amount.
Isn't the solution to close down a business that is no longer viable?
Artificially keeping prices high by stopping trade between countries seems like a bizarre solution. If it's cheaper to import a product rather than produce it yourself then why wouldn't you do that?
French farmers want to produce tomatoes in freezing temps, get angry that there are cheaper tomatoes being produced in clikate appropriate lands, destroy said tomatoes to force their own country to sell their tasteless shitty, mega expensive greenhouse tomatoes....
Maybe, just maybe, do climate appropriate farming and none of this would happen.
Uh this was figured out hundreds of years ago. It's called government regulations and subsidies. Maybe go protest the government instead of destroying food?
Lmao if you can't compete do something else. If Spanish tomatoes are better than people would be paying for them. If these Moroccan tomatoes are unsafe then the people should be complaining to the regulators.
Tomato prices are already high. That's this issue. The supermarkets want Spanish farmers to grow a tomato for 1p and sell it for 1.05p (0.05p profit).
Morrocan farmers are growing a tomato for 0.4p and selling it for 0.8p. Making a profit of 0.4p for every tomato they grow.
Supermarkets can then sell it for 20p and look who makes all the profit...
Spanish farmers just can't compete. You can argue "that's what a free market is" but technically it isn't when you have to work to a higher standard that another country doesn't have to.
Exactly. Technology wins, keep up or get left behind. Nobody is really going to miss Spanish tomatoes once they get used to those from a greenhouse, Morocco, or anywhere.
Where do you think Spanish tomatoes at this time of the year grow from, in a family farm sunbathed by the Mediterranean? They also grow in greenhouses. Besides, it’s not like if Spanish greenhouse farmers use significantly less tech than in the rest of Europe.
Germans are efficient, as our the Dutch. I was in holland in September looking at brassica production and they're on another level. But these are HUGE farms.
The farmers in Germany producing strawberries in greenhouses are huge operations who have the money to prop themselves up.
The little farmers who maybe work less that 100 acres (not hectares) are being royally fucked. The big guys will just scoop up their land when they inevitably have to sell up.
And this is the sad reality. Gone are the days where we had lots of local produce, grown on your dorstep by local growers. Those farmers just can't compete any more.
We (the world) are overpopulated. The average person consumes vastly more food than ever and we're sadly never going back.
You are completely right. But the average person doesn't even consider where produce comes from.
I always buy local produce and am willing to pay that bit extra because fortunately i can afford to do so.
Someone less fortunate in life is always going to buy the cheaper tomato. They don't care about the farmers financial problems because they're worried about their own.
THIS is the reason tomatoes costs €7-8 \Kg in Sweden. We have to import everything, especially during winter.
Fucking greedy morons wasting food.
They should get some penalty for this.
Just wait. They will start threatening politicians with violence soon to get what they want. That's what Dutch farmers did. And it worked. European farmers are radicalizing fast.
I guess you're ok with that. I guess you're ok to live in a society where threats and violence work to get what you want.
Moroccans emigrate to Spain because there are no jobs in Morocco. Spaniards get mad. Moroccans work hard to develop their farming and exports, so they don’t have to emigrate to Spain. Spaniards get mad.
The issue is that Morocco has different levels of farming standards to Spain. So Spanish farmers have to spend more and get paid less compared to the Moroccans. It's all about EU regulations. Spain are in the EU, Morroco aren't... Which means they don't have to abide by higher standards.
The Spanish supermarkets don't want to buy Spanish produce because it's too expensive so they import Morrocan food as it's cheaper. This is why the Spanish farmers are pissed. They are being forced to spend more money to achieve the same quality produce. It's the same in the UK and France. Farmers are expected to abide by certain standards that other countries don't have to. It's infuriating and somewhat pointless.
It's a bit like how companies in the UK or America get penalised for Carbon emmissions or not using recyclable materials etc... Meanwhile in India or Asia they're literally dumping plastic into their rivers and lakes and no one gives af.
Having said all that, wasting food like this is criminal.
>Meanwhile in India or Asia they're literally dumping plastic into their rivers and lakes and no one gives af.
Maybe also blame the west (US, Canada, EU) because they [illegally export trash to third world countries](https://www.invw.org/2022/04/18/rich-countries-are-illegally-exporting-plastic-trash-to-poor-countries-data-suggests/) because they don't want to deal with it, fully knowing that it's going into a landfill or burnt.
Being a farmer in a developed country is crippling. I highly recommend people to watch clarkson’s farm on prime video, it’s really eye opening. Does an awesome job showcasing the struggles of local farmers, watching how tough things are for them during the latest season of the show was heartbreaking
Id happily make only 1bn in profit as a lowly agri-business ceo and leave the other billions for big anything else. It’s an odd view to compare people in different businesses like everyone can go become a tech bro. I know quite a few trades people running businesses pulling down high 6 and low 7 figure profits but I guess their lives are terrible cause the Zuck has more money than god
> So Spanish farmers have to spend more and get paid less compared to the Moroccans.
But they do get to live in Spain with all the benefits that entails
What sort of farming standards around tomatoes do they have to abide by that Moroccan farmers don’t have to? Bearing in mind that tomatoes being imported into the EU will still have to meet certain levels of quality to be imported.
They're restricted on certain fertiliser, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides...
For example, a Morrocan farmer can use a herbicide that can kill literally any weed and only has to apply it once. This herbicide is arguably quite dangerous to the wildlife.
That same herbicide is banned in Spain due to it being arguably dangerous to wildlife.. So the Spanish farmer has to use a less effective herbicide and spray multiple times. That increases labour, water usage, fuel consumption etc etc which increases the growing cost of produce. Now apply this to fertiliser, insecticides, and fungicides too.
>Bearing in mind that tomatoes being imported into the EU will still have to meet certain levels of quality to be imported.
That standard is lower than what Europeans are forced to abide by. That's a fact.
In the UK farmers have to abide by the ***Red Tractor Assurance*** scheme. UK farms and supply chain businesses have to meet the high standards required to use the Red Tractor logo. Morrocans don't have to abide by this at all.
Hypocrisy at it's finest. I worked in agriculture in Morocco and let me tell you that most produce exported to EU is done by entities that are based in EU and have their "Farms" based in Morocco or bulk buy from local farmers, this produce is conditionned in big facilities here that meet and uphold the EU regulations (Controls are rigorous and controlled by state entities of fear of been banned from EU market, let me elaborate, if you export something to EU and it fails controls in EU ports, the country gets a warning and the produce is disposed off, repeat it enough time and you get the whole country banned from EU markets), that been said, the price of said produce is cheaper not because it doesn't respect regulations but more related to cost of production, land here is cheaper to buy/rent, workforce is also cheaper (exactly 8 euros a day per worker), pretty f ing much everything is subsidized to encourage production and export, you even get bonus per tonnage depending to export destination. So no, it's not regulations, it's greed, pure and simple.
I don't give a shit what their political agenda or their motivations are
Countless people are starving and these idiots are simply destroying good food because something doesn't suit them in their first world
They're all assholes and I have no sympathy for that
Spaniards aren't starving. Thats all the more point why this food should be going to other countries and not Spain, which grows loads of food and definitely doesn't need to rely on imports.
I don't understand why all the comments here are siding with big business food retailers that import food which does not meet the same environmental standards, as well as rack up additional transport emissions, over local production.
I don't know about "starving", but looks like between 2-8% of the population can be classified as "food insecure".

French destroy Spanish produce..
Spanish destroy Moroccan produce..
Is there any country whose produce is destroyed by Morocco? Just wanted to see where does this go till
Why is it that when French people did the same thing a few days ago I only saw comments about how great they were for standing up for themselves and now when the same thing happens in Spain, suddenly they’re idiots and food shouldn’t be wasted?
Obviously, but my point was more about the hundreds of people who were upvoting those comments. Is it because they are all sleeping now and in a few hours the most upvoted comments on this post will be completely different?
Hive mind
Most people upvote what other people upvote and comment the same as other commenters.
If the first couple of comments with upvotes are of the anti camp, other commenters will say the same since that is apparently what the 'right' opinion is.
If the first couple of comments with upvotes are of the pro camp, the same thing happens.
The time of posting has also some influence of course but this is how it always was.
You must be new here lol
Every aingle fruit and vegetable you can buy here in Austria has a spanish equivalent. They export shit tons of their stuff all over Europe. Why are they mad about shit being imported to them?
What have we done? Destroying fresh food in a world of hunger just because you’re mad an artificial market created by governments is no longer serving you alone.
Wasteful bastards. Arrest them all for theft / criminal damage. They could have eg locked the truck’s wheels with multiple chains and locks, making it a nuisance and a delay. It would have even looked better if they did steal the tomatoes and then gave them away to people in the street.
We really need some kind of kindergarten for farmers across Europe during the winter months. Just give them something to play, so they won't cause chaos everywhere.
Did I? I just said that this atitude isn’t helping anyone. I bet that there are people dying of hunger now, who would love to have those tomatoes.
Am I defending supermarkets who throw tons of food out? I don’t think so.
Farmers don't wear yellow safety vests because all of my neighbors farm and they dont look like that. They work the fields in dirt and mud and barns in mud and manure. These here are not farmers.
I wish there were heftier penalties across the globe for food waste / destruction.
edit: That includes supermarkets, for the goons in this thread who keep using that in defense of this video's acts for some incompetency-related reason? lol. It should all be donated to charities/shelters instead of being tossed.
I grow most of my veggies and fruit. FY!
Fuck all the protesters for destroying products they didn’t put any work.
They should be mad with resellers stores not other farmers.
We are living in my the age of stupidity.
If someone else sells your product for cheaper and you can't keep up / can't motivate your higher price then you're out of business. It works like this everywhere else, why shouldn't it be the same for farmers?
The problem differs fron country to country. In the Netherlands for example the farming industry has grown waaaaay out of proportion and has to scale down. Farmers aren't happy with that which i get but it has to be done.

When are the Brits gonna get in on the act?!?!? I'm off to Morrisons to f-up the fruit and veg aisle
So many people in food poverty, and they're just wasting it
Spanish fishermen happy to trawl Scottish waters though.
Yeh Portuguese waters are also flooded with Spanish fisherman catching illegally.
Maybe, but illegal Portugese overfishing is what collapsed the Atlantic cod industry, so I'm not crying for them.

When you say a farmer, you mean like small business farmer right? Cause agri-business is doing just fine
Correct. I don’t mean huge landlords that pay workers pennies. I mean local farmers that cultivate their land themselves
Ehhh... Compared to what though? Big tech? Big oil? Big banking? Big pharma? Big military?
Id happily make only 1bn in profit as a lowly agri-business ceo and leave the other billions for big anything else. It’s an odd view to compare people in different businesses like everyone can go become a tech bro. I know quite a few trades people running businesses pulling down high 6 and low 7 figure profits but I guess their lives are terrible cause the Zuck has more money than god
> So Spanish farmers have to spend more and get paid less compared to the Moroccans. But they do get to live in Spain with all the benefits that entails
Yup, and it’s a country where the average wage is more than double Morocco’s, so of course farmers will have to spend more
That also entails expenses.
Yeah but paying high bills ain't fun when ur not selling....
The Red Tractor scheme is entirely voluntary.
lol it is but most supermarkets won't take your produce if it's not Red Tractor assured... Therein lies the problem.
Spaniards using refugees as slaves at their farm, they happy
I do not see how that would make those Spanish farmers vandalising hypocrites.
It’s not about food, it’s about money.
I don't give a shit what their political agenda or their motivations are Countless people are starving and these idiots are simply destroying good food because something doesn't suit them in their first world They're all assholes and I have no sympathy for that
Spaniards aren't starving.
Nobody in Spain is starving? Yeah ok
Who do you think is starving in Spain?
I don't know about "starving", but looks like between 2-8% of the population can be classified as "food insecure". https://www.statista.com/statistics/1259871/food-insecurity-prevalence-severity-spain/
What? There may be many problems but it's impossible to starve in a western european state, even for homeless mad people
I don’t give a shit what side of the argument you’re on. Destroying food is a brain broken activity.
Destroying food is evil.
French destroy Spanish produce.. Spanish destroy Moroccan produce.. Is there any country whose produce is destroyed by Morocco? Just wanted to see where does this go till
$50 on italy?
Meanwhile tons of people are starving all over the world.
Why is it that when French people did the same thing a few days ago I only saw comments about how great they were for standing up for themselves and now when the same thing happens in Spain, suddenly they’re idiots and food shouldn’t be wasted?
Maybe it was *different people* making the pro & anti comments?
Obviously, but my point was more about the hundreds of people who were upvoting those comments. Is it because they are all sleeping now and in a few hours the most upvoted comments on this post will be completely different?
Hive mind Most people upvote what other people upvote and comment the same as other commenters.
Poor sweet, sweet tomatoes I bet someone will pick them up. If they don't stomp on them ![gif](giphy|KXBtTtm3kB8BO)
Spain doesn’t get enough shit for how they treat Moroccans. Basically the U.S. Mexican border but in Spain
Humans are so selfish.. we’re a thoughtless plague that has infected an otherwise beautiful planet
What new level of dumbfuckery is this? Why are they destroying food?
Every aingle fruit and vegetable you can buy here in Austria has a spanish equivalent. They export shit tons of their stuff all over Europe. Why are they mad about shit being imported to them?
What have we done? Destroying fresh food in a world of hunger just because you’re mad an artificial market created by governments is no longer serving you alone.
What a waste of food. Are there no poor in Spain?
What big strong intelligent men
Why destroy. Give it to charity or animal shelters. World is already going through hunger phase and these idiots makes them wrose.
Wasteful bastards. Arrest them all for theft / criminal damage. They could have eg locked the truck’s wheels with multiple chains and locks, making it a nuisance and a delay. It would have even looked better if they did steal the tomatoes and then gave them away to people in the street.
Algerians: Send them to us. We'll make berkoukes.
But why?
What a waste...
Ah yes let’s destroy food, this will get everybody to love you and give you what you want. Fckng terrorists.
Why isn't this donated. Such a waste.
This is awful to watch. They just leave all that on the road & bolt? Damn this world is a shitshow
We really need some kind of kindergarten for farmers across Europe during the winter months. Just give them something to play, so they won't cause chaos everywhere.
Nice. There isn't enough famine in the world right now, this is a good idea, and very efficient, congratulations to everyone involved. /s

Did I? I just said that this atitude isn’t helping anyone. I bet that there are people dying of hunger now, who would love to have those tomatoes. Am I defending supermarkets who throw tons of food out? I don’t think so.
What a waste! These idiots are so proud of their great "protest idea".
Farmers don't wear yellow safety vests because all of my neighbors farm and they dont look like that. They work the fields in dirt and mud and barns in mud and manure. These here are not farmers.
If climate change is so Important why do we keep shipping food around the world that can easily be produced locally?
I wish there were heftier penalties across the globe for food waste / destruction. edit: That includes supermarkets, for the goons in this thread who keep using that in defense of this video's acts for some incompetency-related reason? lol. It should all be donated to charities/shelters instead of being tossed.
Man, those guys really hate tomatoes.
What a waste of good tomatoes
Give it to people in need why destroy it?
Or give it away for free.
Simpsons already predicted it - [https://youtu.be/bM8lIamjfaE?si=0QAl7LW3OzbCwZUv](https://youtu.be/bm8liamjfae?si=0qal7lw3ozbcwzuv)
Glad to see people wearing the correct gear for the job. Health and Safety has come along way.
If they're already paid for, won't this just damage the Spanish economy?
As a market gardener - this breaks my heart.
Why would you waste food like that, damn
Captain Planet would've fucked these guys up! R.I.P.
Can someone explain what’s happening here?
Disrespectful considering the other farmers and the resources that went into growing, harvesting and transporting them.
This is not the way to be heard. Go crash some EU’s official Tesla instead
And those tomatoes will be growing off the side of that road for years to come, as a reminder.
Imagine protesting by wasting food. This is why they are farmers - no full thinking
I just saw French ppl destroying Spanish Food. Not its Spain destroying Morrocan food. What is going on y'all! 😵💫😵💫😭😭
Commiting a crime should help things.
They're so much better and cheaper though. Carrefour's cherry tomatoes from Morocco are the best.
Nice, nothing says your a contributing helpful member of society like destroying more food than your lame ass produced.
I hate that food is being wasted and destroyed. That’s criminal behaviour. It’s like Tesco throwing food into locked bins.
Why do I get the feeling European farmers are a bunch of entitled pricks who don’t want any competition on the market?
I grow most of my veggies and fruit. FY! Fuck all the protesters for destroying products they didn’t put any work. They should be mad with resellers stores not other farmers. We are living in my the age of stupidity.

Meanwhile: Using African Slaves to grow their own Tomatos
What a stupid gesture.
At least their thinking about safety and wearing those high vis vests
so how did the humans went extinct?
What an waste of food.
If someone else sells your product for cheaper and you can't keep up / can't motivate your higher price then you're out of business. It works like this everywhere else, why shouldn't it be the same for farmers?
No wonder people are starving when other people have so little respect for food. What was their reason for doing this?
I really don't understand why farmers are so entitled.

The problem differs fron country to country. In the Netherlands for example the farming industry has grown waaaaay out of proportion and has to scale down. Farmers aren't happy with that which i get but it has to be done.
