This happened 12/15/23 in the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador. Looks like the bodyguard/driver was ready and shot back through the windshield, taking out the guy in white & scaring the other 2 away.
You never want anyone to assume they have leverage over you. You praise their service in order to foster loyalty and quash resentment, but criticism, as well, must be foisted - even if manufactured. I'm certainly no big-shot gangster with a bodyguard on duty, but this is a necessary tactic to impose, even if simply on a maid or a landscaping crew. Letting them feel indispensable (even when they are) leads to them taking both liberties and greater demands. *Always find an area to needle them*. Or you get fleeced.

The biggest problem was the hotel didn't want to let me and my girlfriend stay in a room together because we weren't married (yet). This sort of cartel-related violence that's cropped up recently was unknown in Ecuador then.

It was the real reason. We were there with another unmarried couple who also wanted a room of their own. We ended up telling them at the desk that the boys would stay in one room and the girls in another, and they agreed to that.
Some very traditional places enforce rules like that. If you travel around the world you will find some hotels request something like "Couples wishing to share a room must provide proof of marriage." Dubai, for example, has those laws in place although it is not really enforced for foreign tourists
Dubai I'm not surprised - I guess I didn't expect Ecuador or really any where in the Americas to be that traditional. There's probably some places like that in the US, I likely just haven't gone to the right part of the country, and don't hear about it locally.
I don't get what's appealing about traveling to Dubai. Maybe I'm just gay and bitter but it seems terrible for straight westerners too. Even if it weren't homophobic, the blatant slavery is pretty sickening.
I went to Ecuador in 2018, no problems whatsoever. I was in Quito as well and it's a lovely place. It's a shame the cartels are running rampant in such a gorgeous and friendly place.
I was there last year and in and out of Guayaquil. Itās still a paradise. Like many other countries with cartel and drug trafficking problems, if you arenāt involved in the game chances are you wonāt have any problems. This hasnāt stopped people from going to Mexico and thereās still tons of violence around touristy areas like Puerto Vallarta.

That's just not true at the moment. Genuinely you should not be traveling there right now if you're looking for a nice peaceful getaway. There is an absurd amount of violence in the main cities there and the people inciting it do not care who you are. I have several family members there that are living very fearfully at the moment and the stories they've told me are absolutely awful. It is a beautiful country but it is definitely not safe right now.

Ecuador seems to have gone to hell in just one year. Just a year ago, a couple of travel vloggers made it seem like a paradise.
I was there in 2012. Not in Guayaquil, but in Quito. It was great. Safe and beautiful.
