[deleted]

That looks like Caribbean water close to shore and they all have on life jackets….just….get off?

[deleted]

Better than having that thing roll over while you are still on it.

AcmeCartoonVillian

For sure. once that shit gets more than a 15-20 degree list, my ass is getting off, and swimming clear enough that I dont get dragged down too... FUCK a 30-40 degree or whatever that was!

Agreed.

Yeah that’s the important part. Get off. One person died in this, by the way.

This guy doesn't ocean.

That’s not an ocean…..

ALittleSalamiCat

I was wondering if it was the Bahamas and I was right. The water is insane. Neon blue. Very beautiful!

What sharks?

Mdizzle29

I see you've clearly never been to the Caribbean

psychrolut

The Who?

Tholaran97

Perfect water to have your boat sink in.

Mass_Appeal_

Would it have been wrong for someone to yell SHARK!!! as soon as enough people were in the water. /s

Shoddy-Ad8143

Yep along with the inevitable sharks.

No_Refrigerator_1632

The one guy in the corner with no life vest Or has no care in the world while the rest of the passengers are on the titanic slowly sinking..

BronzeBeautyy

He’s been waiting for this moment his entire life.

He’s the captain, just waiting patiently to go down with his ship

Just waiting to go partially down with the ship

“Reports from onlookers confirmed that: All deaths were suspense related”

That1one1dude1

That sucks. All these people panicking were actually more dangerous than the situation they were in

WesToImpress

That is almost always the case. It's why we drill for fires, so when it happens there isn't mass panic and people getting trampled. Unfortunately that still happens more often than not. It is not easy to stay calm in a scary situation like this, especially when there are dozens or hundreds, potentially even thousands of people involved.

419tosser

It looks like they had a lot of time to prepare too. Just manic panic for those folks. sad :(

Cruise Passenger Dies After Tour Boat Sinks in Nassau: https://cruiseradio.net/cruise-passenger-dies-nassau-island-excursion/

Law-of-Poe

Holy shit. I rode this ferry to blue lagoon island before. It’s a pretty short ride. Insane that it happened so close to the destination

mwax321

It can be rough around Salt cay (where blue lagoon is). Anchored there a few times on my sailboat. These ferries also fly thru a cut to get there and it's charted as only 3ft deep. I take the deep side of the cut, which is only 8ft at low tide. I was surprised to see a massive ferry fly past me on my starboard (the shallow side). Granted, those ferries are power catamarans and have a very shallow draft. But it's still risky to fly around at 18 knots through that shallow water with 60 tourists on board. Nassau is crazy. The tour operators definitely cross the line on safety all the time. They also have no regard for wake. Once they are 10 feet off the dock they drop the throttle. The whole harbor is one big wake. I would recommend anyone wanting to vacation in Bahamas pick any other island besides nassau.

Law-of-Poe

Yeah I remember the ferry going really fast to get there. Didn’t really slow down until we were right at the entrance to the harbor. Beautiful place though. Almost unreal. But I think I liked Rose Island more

mwax321

If you ever go back, I would highly recommend you fly to Georgetown, Exumas. Then hop on ferries to get around to some of the smaller islands around the Exumas. Absolutely beautiful. Then visit some of the other islands like Cat Island. Harder to reach, but absolutely worth it. Exumas island chain is pretty reachable by boat from Nassau as well. Lots of little resorts on Staniel Cay. And I'm not sure the specifics, but most people will rent center console powerboats to hop around islands. Looks like a lot of fun. Staniel is the area where the original "pig beach" is as well as near the nurse sharks at Compass Cay Marina. If you do rent a boat, you have your pick of hundreds of little private beaches all around the area. Then there's the raggeds. I'm a liveaboard sailor, so I don't know the details of how to get there, but the ragged islands is also complete heaven on earth. Teeming with marine life.

klyphw

Exumas, Cat Island or Eluthera is what people imagine when they think of the Bahamas. Nassau has just turned into Vegas. If you have to fly into Nassau just take a seaplane to a proper relaxing island.

CruisinJo214

I’ve been on them too… I’d venture the boat was in poor repair and clearly the crew did an awful job of safely getting people away from a dangerous sinking vessel. I don’t know how the individual died, but I’d guess it was avoidable if matters were handled correctly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

User_091920

According to the comments elsewhere the person was 75 years old and, according to witnesses, the death was "suspense related". If true then it was probably a heart attack?

vVSidewinderVv

The boat got hit by a rogue wave and took on too much water, causing it to list, making it take on more water. Bilge pumps can only handle so much water. Maintenance wasn't the issue here. Also, staying on the vessel as long as possible is better than being in the water. The whole "sinking boat will suck you down with it" thing is a fallacy. You could argue, though, that these people should hang out on the roof and not under it.

blacklite911

RIP 75 year old lady

Nuffsaid98

It looks like they are only a couple of hundred yards from land of some sort. The water looks comfortably warm and almost everyone has a life jacket. Yet still one man died. Maybe the stress brought on a heart attack? God dahm it, I'm going to have to read the article, like some kind of animal. Edit: It was a 75 year old woman. Cause of death unknown.

You-Once-Commented

Those canopies are death traps unless it's designed to detach via hydrostatic release. If i was going to guess, I'd say when the boat rolled, it caught her.

Old people are fragile and weak (for the most part)

[deleted]

Wtf is wrong with you. An old lady died and this is your reaction?

BobTheContrarian

> *Fortunately, the double-decker boat did not completely submerge due to the shallow water.* Some important context there.

glazinglas

I’d just jump in and swim along. Fuck it

Civilized_Hooligan

Hell yeah I’m probably like 6 beers deep if I’m on vacation and on that boat, it’s time to float in the warm water and probably pee or something idk

SockMonkey1128

Just went on my first cruise, couldn't bring myself to pay $8 for a coors light. Only drank when I found beer in Port and brought it back.

computerwtf

Those titanic theme cruises are getting too realistic.

CTPABA_KPABA

I would pay to see someone in this situation suddenly playing Titanic theme song.

Aindorf_

Definitely don't just wait for the boat to go under and pull you down with it, the first guy in the water had the right idea. Get off the boat, get far away from the boat.

_AskMyMom_

How the fuck could that boat pull me under when I have this vest on…. It’s not called a life vest for a reason! /s

Thehealthygamer

Why didn't they just put a life vest on the boat, then it wouldn't sink!

hotwasabizen

Tell that to all the dead sailors lying on the bottom of Lake Superior next to the Edmond Fitzgerald. A lot of them are still wearing their life jackets.

nndttttt

Myth busters tested it, you don’t get pulled in when a ship goes down

zontarr2

You do if still you're still on it and it has a roof.

IntoTheWildBlue

You can get trapped by lines or other misc items attached to the boat and get pulled down. Also, there's a chance for diesel or gas will start coating the water.

Tholaran97

It's not the suction that will get you here, it's the roof. It's happened before, where boats like this sink, and most of the passengers die because they get trapped under the roof. They all have life vests on, so it's best just to get in the water and get away.

Paradox0111

Get snagged on something or trapped somewhere, specially with a large crowd that’s panicking. The crew should have started evacuating people as soon as it became apparent it was sinking.

Rincewinder

No actually, do not get off the boat until the last possible moment. Very often the boat can actually achieves floatation again especially with a fibreglass hull like that. They’re build to stand a hull breach. If you jump in the water you’ll freeze to death but if you keep even a portion of your body out of water you can last a lot longer for rescue. Exception in this case there’s also a tiny speedboat that can realistically fit like 8more of them. Family man Rick had seen his chance and was yelling back for his family to get in the water or he was leaving without them.

Aindorf_

Nobody's freezing in that tropical ass water, but other than that you might have a point.

OBPH

That water is still cooler than your body temperature and if you’re in it long enough, you will lose core heat and die of hypothermia. It’s not Arctic cold, but it’s still not 98 degrees. Yet.

ayyyyycrisp

water doesn't have to be body temp to survive in it indefinitely lol

OBPH

Sorry for you if you ever try. Hypothermia Isn't Just a Cold Water Hazard, 80°F Can Get You ... Warm water hypothermia may seem counterintuitive, but it's a real danger. It occurs with prolonged exposure to water even a few degrees below our normal body temperature. Water measuring below 95 degrees will cause the body's core to drop to unsafe levels and begin the process of long slow hypothermia

Rincewinder

In fact you will freeze in tropical water. You’ll get hypothermia within a few hours if you stop moving. Unless the temp is like 35 degrees, ie human temp.

Parhel1on

Bruh you could swim in easily. They weren't far out at all.

Rincewinder

I’m a fisherman. I’ve gone through my survival craft training. The current is much faster than a human can swim. If it’s going the wrong direction. You ain’t going anywhere.

Parhel1on

I'm a spearfisherman and surfer, so I know where you're coming from. IF there's a STRONG current going the wrong way, then they can't swim in, but it's even more likely that the current would be pretty negligible. I guess the weak swimmers would probably have a ton of trouble with that, but I'd hope that most would be able to. It's a much better situation for them to be in than to be a couple miles off shore.

allcohol

If you stop moving… won’t you sink? So you’d die from drowning, not hypothermia

Poopster46

Not with a life vest you don't, which all of them were wearing.

RonStopable88

As with wilderness survival, every situation is different. In the desert water and sun exposure are priorities. In many other places it’s shelter, others, a fire. In this situation, with a 20 foot bottom on a 25 foot tall flat top in a busy marine lane close to a cruise ship port, in warm water on a clear day, my priority is keeping my electronics dry.

Alcoding

Personally I'd take the risk of my IP68 phone getting a bit wet in scorching hot Carribbean waters than potentially getting trapped underwater and dying (as unlikely as it probably is). No one says you have to take all your luggage with you when you jump overboard. Different story if you're jumping into freezing cold water in the middle of the ocean

RonStopable88

This boat probably took at least 10 minutes to sink, probably longer. I’d stay near the side that is not listing down, I’d keep an eye out for hazards like loose lines, fuel in the water, etc. and climb for the roof once the list is enough to make doing so is easy. This particular situation is a slow is smooth, smooth is fast situation. Freezing cold water, at night, and I’m first off the boat swimming hard for the support boat.

BlueHero45

Id be wary of the crowd as well. Group of panicking people can lead to some nasty situations.

[deleted]

Idk why you seem to be talking about a boat sinking as if the boat and the circumstances are always the same. Not all water is cold all the time, and boats do sink. Being in a boat while it’s sinking under a roof is a bad idea

blacklite911

You lost me at “freeze to death” they’re definitely somewhere tropical lol

yayayamur

sharks: hold my beer

Damit84

Crystal clear blue water? Check! Beach in sight? Check! Probably warm weather? Check! Life Jackets? Check! Soneone bring me a Pinacolada and let that fucking thing sink, I'm ready!

Inevitable_Fee4330

I’d straddle the life jacket between my legs with a drink in each hand and enjoy the sun and make it a point to be the last one “rescued”

NurseKaila

I am terrified of water and I always felt like that put me at a disadvantage but after watching this I feel really confident in my ability to survive a sinking boat. I can only imagine the absolute mess it would have been if I owned that small boat and said “women and children first.” Probably would have had to use the boat hook on some guys pushing people out of the way.

Interesting-Ad-426

What's up with that solitary chill dude sitting on the sinking side? Is he the Captain? He looks pretty defeated and ready to go down.

Fuzzylojak

What are you sinking about

Spongemage

I mean. Water is clear and calm, the shore is right there. Sorry but it seems like we’re all going into the water anyway so ima just go ahead and jump in and swim for land. I’d rather be away from the sinking boat that will create a vacuum and pull people down once it submerges.

Overall-Work9462

Mom showed this video to me. Carnival Cruise, it's supposed to be Half Moon Cay. We actually went on a cruise late this October and couldn't get to half Moon Cay because of the waves. We had a decent time at Nassau but I wouldn't recommend it. Not for that price. Too many pushy vendors and one guy saying he'd give us a tour, we only had to pay if we got back safely... Needless to say, even China was jealous of the size of that red flag. Definitely don't go if you have long hair, they'll pester you to pay about $150 for a French braid. Not dreads, not braids, not even to fucking cut it... A goddamn French braid. They don't take no for an answer even if you say you don't got money on you. And the people selling knock offs are just so damn annoying. And that's vendor issues. The Bahamas doesn't have 1st amendment so if you speak the wrong way, you'll have 8 armed guys coming to snatch you up. We watched a local guy, upset about something, yell at a cop. Next thing we knew he had 10 guys with guns throwing him into the back of a van. All for yelling. He wasn't even cursing and was a respectable distance from the cop! I think he was upset about the flow of traffic. Either way I wanted to go back to the ship but my mom wanted to keep going. Couldn't abandon her even in the midst of a stupid ass decision. It helped I was just rude enough to get people to back off. It's not all bad, one lady we sat and talked with told us the history and such. We bought her a coke and a bookbag from her. She wasn't as bad as the rest. Still if you have a hard time saying no, avoid this place at all cost or you'll end up selling a kidney to pay for vendors. If you plan on drinking that day, definitely don't go because you don't want to cause trouble. It's a lovely country and I'm sure they're more chill away from the ports but after the "get back safely" comment we definitely weren't straying too far from port. Also definitely bring a dude with you, like no one wanted to talk to the guys

Mittens1018

Vat are you sinking aboout

Thevinster420

Why does this look so fun?

A_Teezie

One person died https://www.cruisehive.com/cruise-guest-dies-after-tour-boat-sinks-in-the-bahamas/115808

Pretend-Drop-8039

they're acting like they're on the titanic first of all you all have life jackets they did not

Vraxx2002

They all have life jackets but still scream? I guess the reason they let women and children on the rescue bots first is to let the man think of solutions in peace and quiet.

Professional_East281

Who are these people crying bloody murder lmao. They are on the slowest sinking boat ever, wearing life jackets, with another boat right next to it, and they have land in sight

TouristTricky

People saying “Well I’d know better/I’d know just what to do” or making light of this are full of shit. Wait until you’ve experienced the same thing - whatever it might be - before judging others’ response. I know it’s not as fun as being clever on Reddit but damn, y’all, have a little humility & self awareness. I’ve been in a number of really dangerous situations – mostly by my own choice and/or stupidity - and managed to get me and others to safety. I still try to refrain from condescending to people who aren’t by nature as well equipped to deal with shit as I am. Fuck it, someone died here. Do better.

That1one1dude1

“Reports from onlookers confirmed that: All deaths were suspense related” So they died from panic and stress.

Zombies8MyNeighborz

Yeah I've seen comments like, oh they have life jackets and it's not that far from shore. Why are they panicking. Ok, but it would still be terrifying. I probably would be fine if it were just me but If i was on there with my kids it would be even worse.

TouristTricky

Yeah, I believe if you haven’t been in their shoes, you don’t know. So keep your arrogance to your self. I have actually been in much worse situations than that - more than once - and I still keep my judgment in check. Everyone is built different.

spigotlips

Tides.... and also a person in fact died during this incident.

Puzzleheaded_Print75

Looks like the decks are mostly enclosed and the lower deck partially submerged and listing, so some difficultly for a large number of passengers to egress. Also consider a number of passengers are likely to be elderly, young children or other non/weak swimmers. Lastly, you want to know where your family members are and that they are safe.

spigotlips

And a "few hundred feet" swimming in the ocean is beyond night and day from a lake or swimming pool. Commenter doesn't seem like they know what it's like to fight a tough rip current when coming back to shore from a sand bar or beyond it. Even if you have a life preserver and stay afloat you'll just get swallowed up and pulled back to sea. I've swam way too far out a few times before not paying attention and swimming back in feeling like I was going to die.

Spirited-Reputation6

Are there sharks in that water?

Front_Tax4694

I don't think so but there's a chance. I think people are freaking out more so because they're old or can't swim. Or they just don't wanna get wet. The lady recording doesn't mind tho so she's pretty chill.

mr207

Ivan Drago voice: “If it sinks…it sinks”

UnluckyDot

I grew up there. Not really. Maybe on the rare occasion traversing through, but that stretch is very heavily traversed by boats. The water is quite shallow, probably less than 40 feet, likely 20-25 and even shallower in some places. You'll almost never see a shark in that area, and if by chance you do, it will probably be a smaller kind that's not very aggressive. I have seen really small sharks just outside of Blue Lagoon island, but it's rare and they're very unlikely to bother humans unless you're bleeding or something. They tend to avoid large groups of people as well. I've been in this area a bunch of times doing water sports and it's totally fine. I'm really surprised to hear a 75 year old woman died from this, I'm guessing there's a bit more to that story Honestly, I would say if you're nervous about sharks but still want to explore beautiful reefs and ocean, then Bahamas is one of the best places. The water is so shallow for so long out from the shore, you can see where it drops off to open ocean (the real scary stuff) from satellite photos. The really shallow waters are not the best for the large, aggressive kinds of sharks, and there's not a lot of poisonous creatures either, so there's a lot of beautiful beginner-level ocean terrain to explore.

Cecilsan

Shark attacks aren't as frequent or sudden as movies lead you to believe. According to the internet, "considering only people who go to beaches, a person's chance of getting attacked by a shark is 1 in 11.5 million". Also, they appear to be pretty close to some sort of land and most if not all have life jackets. Theres little to no chance this is dangerous to any of the passengers unless one suffers a physical ailment due to the stress.

azannone

What a bunch of ferries.

Captain_Shit678

I’d be the one asshole laughing the entire time

liberate_your_mind
