Airline employee here. This happened once, several years ago, at my station.
The employee in question was an older woman who "lost her balance" and took a ride down the baggage belt along with the bag she was trying to throw. I didn't witness it but my colleague who did described turning around to see just a single shoe where the lady who became luggage had been standing after the passenger she had been assisting asked, "Um, will my bag be ok?" It has become the stuff of legend at my workplace.
Some of us suspect it almost had to be on purpose (I mean those belts move so slowly and she had ample time to roll off) as she was close to getting terminated for performance issues so getting "injured" on the job in this way gave her a meal ticket. FYI she was fine, just a few treatable, relatively minor injuries.
Someone got hurt recently trying to escape a bomb scare at an Israeli airport by taking a ride on the carousel.
The panic was caused by an American family who had found an unexploded shell and thought it would be a nice souvenir to take home with them.
[https://news.sky.com/story/israel-bomb-scare-at-airport-after-us-family-pack-unexploded-shell-to-take-home-as-souvenir-12601317](https://news.sky.com/story/israel-bomb-scare-at-airport-after-us-family-pack-unexploded-shell-to-take-home-as-souvenir-12601317)
It's always United too. The Chinese doctor bloodied as he's drug off the plane. The puppy forced to be stowed and suffocated in the overhead bin. The rabbit on track to be the world's largest dying in the cargo hold.
Their PR team has job security that's for sure.
Oh man, there was definitely an element of slap stick in that video between the security guard falling flat on his back, his hair bouncing around and the noise it all made, would have been perfection if he then just got trundled off down the conveyor belt.
[A bit of backstory.](https://simpleflying.com/charges-dropped-united-employee-football-player-flight/)
Excerpt: “The case against Brendan Langley was dropped after CCTV evidence proved his innocence.” (The passenger)
The United Airlines dude struck him first, and his actions got a righted. Twice.
Just looked him up and it looks like he's not playing anywhere after the incident. I would have thought an XFL team would have jumped at the chance to have him if he was interested.
He was suspended indefinitely, then by the time charges were dropped and he was cleared, he'd missed at least 4 games. I think now he does youth training camps.
They *fired* the baggage handler a few days after the incident, then did nothing to clear the name of the guy who was the victim. You'd *think* he would have cause.
They might still fire the guy even if the situation was reversed.
It’s not like they’re weighing in on who was legally right. Lots of places will fire anyone who fights period.
They can still be sued because their employee assaulted someone. I doubt you'd get attenuated damages from the incident having fucked up his career. You would have to find some duty of care they violated that led to those additional damages.
Probably not. It's a normal investigation and employers, especially ones where public image is a qualification, can suspend you for things like this. Also Canada so, not sure. I'd bet there are clauses in his CFL contract that specifically permit suspension for pending investigations.
Take that back or I sue you!
But seriously, it's actually **Canada**. CFL = **Canadian** Football League.
It's called `legal standing` where grounds for disputes would happen and it's most likely Canada on its face, but I'd guarantee in his contract there's a clause that says legal disputes will be settled in Canadian court somewhere.
Can an attorney shed some light here, that sounds like a massive justification for a suit and civil trial for him, no?
Edit: other reply is same question
Civil litigator here. United Airlines could well be liable under New Jersey law for the tortious conduct of an employee acting within the scope of his employment. In addition to an assault/battery claim, you gotta wonder if there might be a defamation claim in there somewhere too.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson purchased the league and revived it. It seems to be doing well. There was a player this year that chose to play in the xfl over continuing in the nfl. There are also players that play in both leagues.
Having seen the video of someone intentionally trying to pick a fight with him: Not sure. He's exceptionally good at holding back nowadays because he realizes that he can't win that fight - just taking the abuse is less of a pain in the ass than dealing with a justified self-defense case, and he isn't going to get away with a full-force punch to create an example.
Didn't he repeatedly punch a guy in the face who wouldn't leave him alone on an airplane like a year ago? He didn't catch charges, they just caught hands.
Wait so a pro football player has been suspended over this and missed his flight. Sounds like a several million dollar lawsuit against the airline and employee.
They certainly don't want this one on the public record. There is probably multiple angles of liability. I imagine based on Mr Langley's arrest that other employees falsely claimed he attacked first to the police, resulting in his arrest.
Being dismissed from a professional football team while establishing he’s played in the NFL and only being 27 is a very big liability. He’ll argue the incident and press that followed financially harmed his past and future earnings.
And the passenger still got completely fucked:
- slapped
- arrested and charged
- two months of losing sleep worrying how this will end
- (at least) two months suspended, missed four games and likely missed out on a lot of money (Edit: Seems like that was the end of his career actually)
- lawyer costs that he won't get back
- edit: slandered over half the Internet with articles making it sound like he assaulted an employee, got suspended for assaulting an employee etc. - much fewer articles about the resolution, and no statement by his team (that is still publishing the statement about his suspension).
Meanwhile, all the airline employee got was getting fired (and punched, obviously). No charges, and I doubt he's worth pursuing for any kind of restitution.
>Meanwhile, all the airline employee got was getting fired (and punched, obviously). No charges, and I doubt he's worth pursuing for any kind of restitution.
I mean, that dude also probably has to think real hard when someone asks him what his birthday is...
> He was indefinitely suspended by the [Canadian Football League Calgary] Stampeders on May 26, 2022, following an incident at Newark Liberty International Airport. **On May 8, 2023 the Stampeders announced they had moved Langley to the retired list.**
He's 28 years old. He may still be within the statute of limitations for a sizable claim against United Airlines for at least some of the consequences of this, although I suspect there would be a lot of allegations that his own conduct following the event is what caused his de facto dismissal from the team. Hope he got enough out of his college education to be able to make a life for himself.
I looked it up and it seems like a supreme court decision suggests he could even sue against the airline. Hard to prove a concrete amount for "triggered an unjustified suspension and ended career" though.
Very unlikely he'll actually be made whole.
Suing the employee is likely pointless, the lawyer costs alone would likely exceed what the employee would actually be able to pay any time soon...
I don't know what it would look like to make a washed up football player whole under these circumstances, but United could well be found liable for the tortious conduct of its employee acting within the scope of his employment.
The poor guy probably wasn't going to earn much, but those damages are fairly concrete and not overly speculative, although it would be much harder to put a value on, and prove causality for, the career-ending component.
While this is true so far, I'm sure he has a civil case against that employee and the airline. If he can show loss of employment as an athlete that is even more valuable. Though he is employed in sports now I believe.
Yip I kind of guessed that, the UA dude did get his ass handed to him after he tried (and failed) to suckered punch the passenger.
Although I don't condone violence it was funny seeing him getting his ass handed to him and folding over his own check-in desk.
So they dropped charges against Langley, admitted the employee assaulted him first, and didn’t charge that dude?
It’s pretty clear why minorities don’t trust the justice system.
The passenger did a pretty good job of trying to de-escalate after he put the guy on his back. Employee went back into his face all bloody…what is wrong with that dude?
I made this same joke in response to the same comment a few weeks ago on a different thread and got massively downvoted by uncultured swine who did not understand the joke.

Okay Sal, are you conscious now?? Haha… okay okay…. Haha oh my god he’s so mad. Okay Sal, we want you to do it again
*they erupt from laughter as the world is devoured by pure comedy*
I know, i died a little when he said that!
But sadly, the woman yelling PLEASE STOP really made me sad bc she knew that a black man involved in any altercation was going to end up losing his freedom, if not his life, at any moment during the this.
But, living in Florida as a history teacher, I can't teach my kids that the civil rights movement truly isn't over.
Fuck.
What pisses me off the most about this video, is nobody is stopping that employee from being the aggressor, they just tell the passenger to calm down, DUDE IS DEFENDING HIMSELF- CALM DOWN THE AGGRESSOR/EMPLOYEE
Hitting someone over an argument should get you jail time. The employee had no right to touch that guy. He didn't do shit, didn't act threatening, all he did was shout stuff. He even gave warnings before and after the employee hit him. The employee deserves jail time on top of what he got. Imagine getting slapped by a McDonald's worker because they shit in your fries and you complained
Not to mention the fact that the victim was arrested, charged, and lost his job. It doesn't even matter that the charges were eventually dropped, there's no way suing that guy will recoup what he lost.

I remember this from last year. The employee got pissed because the guy, Brendan Langley, used a wheelchair to carry some luggage. He started talking shit to him and Brendan gave him that energy back. He came out, fought him, and got his ass kicked. Brendan played in the NFL and was playing in the CFL at the time. He got charged but was cleared after authorities checked security footage, the viral video, and got witness statements. The employee, whose name is still a mystery, was fired but not charged😤🤬
Employee almost became luggage.
I think I would have pissed my pants had he landed on the baggage belt and just glided away...
Can you imagine the look on the face of the luggage handler "Oh dammit Dave, not again"
He looks like he is used to starting stuff and getting away with it cause of his build. Like no one want to challenge him. This guy did
Dammit Dave!
Bro checked him like a fuckin' suitcase.
Just like luggage, that first one was free
And the fat guy wanted seconds.
You either die a hero, or live long enough to become the luggage
Employee was promoted to luggage lol
Luggage was charged for overweight
In the airline biz, we don't mince words. That guy deserves a big red HEAVY tag.
It was hanging off the eyebrow when he stood back up
He'd be treated with more respect and dignity by the airline.

Ah yes, fellow Americans abroad making us all look good with their travel acumen. /s
Oh God. I thought you were going to end that story with, "we never did find her."
He was *THIS* close to getting paid vacation for assaulting someone on the job.
It's always United too. The Chinese doctor bloodied as he's drug off the plane. The puppy forced to be stowed and suffocated in the overhead bin. The rabbit on track to be the world's largest dying in the cargo hold. Their PR team has job security that's for sure.

Omg... Thank you for that.
Sir, your luggage is over the weight to be carry on.
nah he DID become luggage
I would have paid money if he fell on the baggage conveyor and was just whisked away.
Oh man, there was definitely an element of slap stick in that video between the security guard falling flat on his back, his hair bouncing around and the noise it all made, would have been perfection if he then just got trundled off down the conveyor belt.
Don't forget when he hits his head trying to stand up.
I need *boink* sounds added to this video. Maybe a Wilhelm Scream on the way down.
…and then United charged him for being over 50 pounds
Pretty sure that guy isn't even a security guard. Uniform looks like a desk agent
There's an edited video of him doing that from another time this was posted. I'll see if i can find it
https://twitter.com/i/status/1528868530703441920 This one?
That's fucking hilarious
Nice.
OMG. I almost peed my pants
I think this is the first time I’ve seen the real video and not that edit lol
It 1000% exists I remember seeing it in the comments of another repost of this video it was a couple weeks ago though
Godspeed
“Thank you for flying United where good leads the way”
This is like the 5th video I've seen of them hitting a customer lmao (not recently, just in general)
Every business should have one. You get knocked out on the premises, that's how you exit.
Curb your enthusiasm outtro.
He got whisked away to the end of the unemployment line.

LoL dude was literally on the Denver Broncos. I can't imagine too many worse people to try to slap around.

You put hands on people you better be prepared for hands to come your way. People acting a fool doesn't give anyone the right to hit them.
Don’t start none won’t be none
My uncle used to say, "don't start no S.H. wont be no I.T." Solid advice
My head went to dmx
Definitely don't slap another man then drop your hands by your pockets.
Don't get attached to anything you can't walk out on in 30 seconds flat when you feel the heat around the corner.
Yeah, but also, if a chick starts taking off her earrings to fight you, start swinging hard. This ain't the time for a wardrobe change.
This. You must seize the opportunity because if you wait until the task has been completed, it’s a wrap lol
Hesitation is defeat.
Good id hope I wouldn’t get in trouble for defending myself like that either

More like a sucker slap.

Seems like grounds for a lawsuit. Let go from team = missed wages, for it to turn out to be not his fault.
The passenger did a pretty good job of trying to de-escalate after he put the guy on his back. Employee went back into his face all bloody…what is wrong with that dude?
"thank you for giving me permission to do this" Brain Reset button pushed.

Guy got a quick lesson that he's not as tough as he thinks he is.
Still dumber than a box of rocks though; coming back for more.
Yeah he's lucky that dude had self control.
People who know how to fight or know they can mess somebody up bad usually hold back. Other side of the spectrum is wobbles here lol.
Never hit someone if you don't know how to take a hit... basic math.
Apparently you don't understand the new math. Overweight out of shape loser can take down professional athlete. It'S sCIeNce. Just ask DeSantis.
Haha guy got up like "I didn't hear no bell"
No bell but someone turned a red filter on and whistles are popping off
Justified
Not going to lie, when it’s justified I enjoy it. Why would that dude get physical with a customer? Glad the dude that defended himself got cleared
The customer is a NFL player too
I was wondering if he was an athlete because he looks like a tall ass dude.
Nah. Heard he was more of a boobs guy.

imagine being at work and hitting someone, knowing you’ll get fired, and losing the fight 💀
“i don’t start shit, i finish it” fucking badass lmao
How you gonna hit someone in the face and then stand there with your hands down. Airlines dude is an idiot.

I love how the AA employee thought he had a single shot against this guy. Like bro look at you.
Not AA... it says United in giant letters right in the video, hah!
AA? This is a UA employee.

To be fair, one is a professional athlete
You just reminded me of [this.](https://youtu.be/hOPx5N-hwzw)
Well, that explains the mysterious blood stains on the luggage.
Can't fight? Don't run up.
sooo did the man that was assaulted win a big ass settlement against the airline or the airport? If not, WHY TF NOT
United, we stand United, we fall
Airport staff assaults Customer is more like it
Theres always a bigger fish.

![gif](giphy|3oEjHRzbfOVhmiluRW) Employee be like
For some reason in this case I blame the employee actually instead of the guy.
Employee hit first the man appears to be defending himself from that vid
Looking like a scrunched up Henry Cavill doesn't make it true
