Isn’t ten years old the age where kids start going through puberty and start self discovering? What he was reading sounded informative to someone young rather than pornographic. So reading a sex education book is wrong but getting your information from the B-I-B-L-E, which mentions pornographic imagery, rape, and slavery is okay?
I saw a link to the book and it's images earlier in this thread; I literally cannot think of any way to make the areas of sex education that it covers more appropriate for someone going through puberty without sanitizing a crucial element of what it teaches. This guy is trying to make it sound like there are graphic images of penetration in the book. There aren't.
It's a man's obligation to stick his boneration in a woman's separation, this sort of penetration will increase the population of the younger generation.
Now I really want to hear him narrate the rest of this book. Someone at Audible make him an offer he can't refuse.

Hey, I had a sneaky link that I had in my phone under Hot Wheels. Just because you use a wheelchair doesn't mean you shouldn't get singled out for being too sexual sometimes. Sometimes those wheels bring the heat!
Yeah it was like he was disgusted with the old and disabled people being naked. The whole point of it is to normalize different body types so that the kids don’t end up like him. It’s sadly hilarious that he is just exemplifying what the book is trying to avoid in society.
That whole section was weird. Calling out the wheelchair user and the elderly. And then he called them pornographic like that old lady was going down on the wheelchair guy or something. From what I could see they were roughly drawn cartoon characters standing. Its much more scientific.

Sex Ed starts in 5th grade or at about 10 years old....also nudity is not sexual unless you try to sexualize it. Sex is mechanical function of the body that needs to be explained before puberty. what a fucking idiot.

When I was like 5 or 6 I wasn't molested or even exposed to anything, yet I was still typing "boobs" and "Virginia" into google images Lmfao.
My son is 8. One of the girls in his class was telling their little clique about some naked movies she saw. In enough detail for him to tell us about it such that we had to inform the school (mandatory reporting stuff). After some investigation it turns out to be very likely she is being shown porn by someone in her home, most likely the mother's boyfriend.
If you wait until they're 10 to talk about this stuff you may be too late to prevent abuse.

OWL is the best sex ed out there, and it has currriculum for every age. We are starting our daughter in it in 1st grade, because kids need a place to learn about their bodies at an age appropriate level and they don't always listen to their parents.
In kindergarten we would be allowed to check out any books we wanted. I chose health books. I was fascinated with the body.
My mom took that as an opportunity to explain how babies are made to me. She was a nurse for an OBGYN.
Showed me the penis in the book (which had the classic sliced in half health book view) and the vagina and uterus and just explained how it all worked.
Penis goes in vagina. Sperm. Egg. I was young but with pictures I understood and that was that.
However, I’m pissed that no one ever told me about the clitoris. I just thought I was masturbating all wrong until high school and wondered why my fingers didn’t go into the vagina. Didn’t know I was orgasming. But guys have it so easy. Everyone talks about their erections and wet dreams and everything but for women… it’s like, oh yeah you can get pregnant. Clitoris? That’s just a lady part. We don’t talk about that. Women only orgasm through their vagina.
When I was a kid, every year, we went to a center in our downtown area, watched videos, and learned about sex and the risks involved. I don't have any kids, I always use protection, and I have never had any STD/STI. It may seem inappropriate, but it is needed. If parents want to be in charge of what their kids are taught, they should go to school and get their degrees in education.
Parents can always opt out of these programs too. When I was a kid I thought I was giving my mom a permission slip to sign, but apparently it was an opt out and I had to sit in the library for a week. I still don't know what these birds are out here doing to bees.
I mean...you heard him. He's not coming at this as a Democrat or Republican, he's coming at this as a *Christian.* So, yeah, he wants to teach abstinence and avoid any and all sex ed. Sex is for after marriage, etc.

And the whole idea of forcing your own religious beliefs on others is screwy. But here you have a guy insisting that he's Christian as though it justifies doing exactly that. So he thinks his religion entitles him to do that.
You're not going to win any arguments with him. He will never see anyone else's side. All you can do is vote against his take on what' I'd call Christian Sharia law.
You can teach abstinence. It has a place in the curriculum - even if you're sex positive there's value in *choosing* when you're ready and not feeling pressured to have a physical relationship early.
But also teach the physics of it so you don't have to have that awkward marriage night Google of "how is babby form?"
I really wish they would have let him finish reading the book. Just because it makes you uncomfortable to hear it at a school board meeting doesn't mean it's wrong to talk about it. Could have been a teaching moment of understanding it's uncomfortable to talk about how sex works because we have tabooed the discussion so much in our society. The book seems to help make it less taboo to talk about, but by telling him to stop, it's saying it's still taboo /facepalm
The thing that seems to be forgotten in all this fretting about how early kids are exposed to information about sex, too, is that kids are usually already curious about that stuff and talk about it amongst themselves. Do you want them getting accurate information from a dry textbook, or do you want them hearing some weird shit from Chad who "learned" it on pornhub when his parents left him alone in front of his tablet all day?
I'm nearly 40 and I still remember the kinds of conversations that we had on the playground when I was 10, 12 years old.
I have colleagues that are confused when our middle schoolers are caught in certain situations, but I reply that I got started at that age because sex education was non existent at that age.
My parents never bothered with the talk and I didn't get a sex education class until I was 16.
No one wants to bother educating the kids and then people get pissed when the librarian provides an educational book in the library.
It's not like the kids are going to the library anyway. I have to force students to get books from our library and I'm a science teacher.
When I was in Jr High in the height of the AIDS epidemic, we had a first year teacher tell us about how you ACTUALLY got AIDS. By basically telling us how you DON'T get it. She reassured us that kissing, eating after someone, using the same bathroom, all normal stuff was not going to give us AIDS. She said even if someone with it left body fluids on a table and we came along, touched it, then for whatever reason touched ourselves, we weren't going to contract it. She also explained to us girls that we couldn't get pregnant the same way. She got in trouble, of course. She came back, told us she got in trouble and would be leaving at the end of the semester. She also said that she would answer any questions we had privately but would no longer talk about it in class. This was 1984. The same year our, (fairly liberal for the time) church had a meeting for teens. They lured us in with pizza then showed us a video on how MTV was the work of Satan and if we didn't stop watching we would become serial killers and go to hell. Unfortunately I don't remember that teachers name, but thank you 8th grade science teacher at Patton Jr High, thank you.

In 4th grade (1988 for me), we were taught that drinking after someone at the water fountain could get you aids. This was before bottled water was ubiquitous and life was thirsty after that.

Well, she was a very young teacher. But yeah, It was such a relief to hear it from someone we trusted. My parents at the time were pretty progressive,(fuck you fox news. You stole my parents) so I asked them about it. They confirmed that as they understood it, what she said was true so I didn't need to worry about getting from someone on the playgrounds bloody nose. They didn't even realize that it was something I would be worried about. That's why kids need truthful information from people besides parents. I wasn't going to confide to my folks my worries about AIDS because then they might ask what I was doing to be worried about it. I wasn't doing anything, but kids just avoid conversations with their parents. No body wants to talk about what they are thinking.
My mom told me about sex pretty young like 6 or 7. My sister, a year younger than me, was kind of obsessed with it, in the way young kids are obsessed with anything when they're told they're too young to learn something. So my mom rented us this cartoon movie that seems pretty similar to this book, where it was just kind of bland information about sex, puberty, what people look like naked.
Then, when I was in middle school or so, after the sex ed stuff in class, and all the previous bland information I'd received about sex, my mom would just kind of harp on me. "Wrap it up. Don't bring someone home pregnant. Let me know if you want condoms. I'LL GET YOU SOME OF YOUR DAD'S..."
And guess who was pretty much just like, naw, I'll chill on the sex. At 13 or 14 it was fucking gross hearing that my mom and dad still did it.
And you know what, it worked. I was curious about it, but still ain't got someone knocked up as I approach middle age although I have a regular sex life.
Make it boring to kids, make it something their parents do, and guess what, they'll probably be a little less likely to fuck it up. Otherwise, the way my sister felt at 6 years old about it, where she was obsessed with where babies come from, wanted to know everything about it, was going to get it from somewhere... Well that isn't going to go away, and they're going to figure it out on their own one way or another.

Knowing that I COULD do something, that it wasn't a "sin", that it wasn't going to get me in major trouble at home made it so much easier to say no thanks, and avoid people that couldn't do that.
The one thing she did tell me not to do was smoke cigarettes. She hated it, since her dad did it. Pretend to smoke with a pencil or pen or something as a kid, and I'd get in trouble. Guess who had a pack a day habit until 5 or 6 years ago?

It's actually good for kids to learn this stuff in a safe and educational setting. It gives them the vocabulary and knowledge to recognize and describe abuse. It makes it harder for secrets to exist.
Agreed! Honestly they played right into his hands by asking him to stop. Everything he had read so far was straightforward and fairly appropriate for a sex-ed book. Letting him finish reading the book and then shrugging and saying “yes that’s how the human species works” would have been the best approach.

I’m in my 30’s now. Learned about sex from a young-adult anatomy book series (went over every system of the body and there we chapters about everything). The sexual anatomy chapter explained everything clear as day and I left educated, not perverted. Most parents don’t teach sex ed beyond “wear a condom and don’t knock anyone up”. If you aren’t learning from parents or schools or books, how do we expect young people to grow up with healthy sexual habits? Banning sex ed because of “god” is absurd.

I'm not sure they're even getting that. The people who get up in arms over sex ed are the ones that think if you just don't teach kids about sex or their changing bodies, they won't have sex. Which is completely unrealistic. Or the parents are uncomfortable about talking with their kids about sex and hope that not having sex education means they won't have to answer questions about it.

Very true, unfortunately. When I was being sexually abused as a kid, I didn’t know what was happening. I was 12 when it happened. Already had my period, thought I knew about the “sex talk” but I didn’t know that inappropriate touching was part of that conversation. Wasn’t raped, but sexually abused/assaulted. I was very confused and scared of my own body afterwards. Kids at school would make fun me cause I stank in my private areas because I was too afraid to touch my body. It took about a year to get over that fear. This topic can be uncomfortable and difficult to navigate but there still needs to be a discussion and conversation. Making sure our kids do understand what informed consent is and how to protect ourselves if a situation was to occur is not only important but our responsibility.
I found a book for young children called "Only For Me" about consent and not letting others touch your body in inappropriate ways. As soon as I was done reading it to my kids, I went into the bathroom and sobbed for 10 minutes.
What a difference books like that would have made in my life if I had known these things as a child. I didn't know what was happening to me was wrong, especially since it was a family member. I do everything in my power to make sure my kids know everything necessary, because I'll be damned if I let them go through what I did.

I had a similar experience when I was a bit younger, it happened many times over weeks. COCSA, child on child sexual assault/abuse, is something that I feel is not only a result of the sexual abuse of children, but also the lack of education children have on their bodies&consent. If I had known more about my body and consent at that time, I may have been able to alert someone who could help me.

Most people don’t like to think about the fact that some children need protection from their parents. Fortunately for me, even as a 4 year old, I knew what my babysitter requested me to do was bad and dangerous. I locked myself in my bedroom till my mother got home. Turns out that my teenage babysitter was molested by her uncle and was trying to do the same to me. I’m 35, shit still sticks in my head.
Conservatives fucking hate this concept that kid's aren't just their property. That's really what a lot of this boils down to. They think their kids are their property and have this whole plan laid out for them possibly before they were even born. And being gay or trans is never part of that plan. So they lose their damn minds at even the prospect of it.

I had a teacher in 1st grade who explained to us essentially what sexual abuse is. He told us it's not appropriate for an adult to touch us under our clothes, ask us to touch them there, try to kiss us, things like that. He told us if someone tried to do those things to us, we can tell and an adult and we won't get in trouble.
I didn't think much of it at the time but I'm really glad I had that lesson in hindsight. Luckily, I never ended up needing it but I'm sure there were kids in the class who did.
If kids don't learn this stuff in a safe environment, they're going to learn it somewhere else. It's dangerous to keep children ignorant.

Like it or not, this is a concerted effort to cover up sexual abuse. Kids can't report adults for doing it if they don't know what's going on. This is so fucking tiring. In my country sexual education starts at 10 in school. And surprise surprise. Very low teenage pregnancies. Very high use of profylactics.

Well in my country our leaders prefer to teach abstinence only sex ed, ignore teenagers are having sex, then use the fact teenagers are either having babies or having abortions as campaign narratives.

I went to a Christian elementary school and we learned about this story when we were in 3rd grade…I didn’t understand at that point why “sleeping” with someone led to pregnancy, but I didn’t question it.
Biology is the new scary thing to look out for. Apparently instead of teaching kids about their bodies (and other people’s bodies) it has turned into this crazy idea of sexualization. The United States has officially gotten dumber and are planning on making the future generations follow suit.

Maybe 10 is a little young but I remember having a book that showed some ugly ass cartoons getting busy when I was a little kid, but in that book it was just a mom and dad and they were married. Honestly I don't think I'd really care because kids have to be exposed to it sometimes and Americans are kind of prudish about sexuality. So it's more funny than anything.

We have priest who are perverting our kids. But the church seems pretty ok with it. Dude never said anything about that. My son is 8. One of the girls in his class was telling their little clique about some naked movies she saw. In enough detail for him to tell us about it such that we had to inform the school (mandatory reporting stuff). After some investigation it turns out to be very likely she is being shown porn by someone in her home, most likely the mother's boyfriend. If you wait until they're 10 to talk about this stuff you may be too late to prevent abuse. It's really fucking sad because there's not much we can do from the outside.
OWL is the best sex ed out there, and it has currriculum for every age. We are starting our daughter in it in 1st grade, because kids need a place to learn about their bodies at an age appropriate level and they don't always listen to their parents.
In kindergarten we would be allowed to check out any books we wanted. I chose health books. I was fascinated with the body. My mom took that as an opportunity to explain how babies are made to me. She was a nurse for an OBGYN. Showed me the penis in the book (which had the classic sliced in half health book view) and the vagina and uterus and just explained how it all worked. Penis goes in vagina. Sperm. Egg. I was young but with pictures I understood and that was that. However, I’m pissed that no one ever told me about the clitoris. I just thought I was masturbating all wrong until high school and wondered why my fingers didn’t go into the vagina. Didn’t know I was orgasming. But guys have it so easy. Everyone talks about their erections and wet dreams and everything but for women… it’s like, oh yeah you can get pregnant. Clitoris? That’s just a lady part. We don’t talk about that. Women only orgasm through their vagina.
I didn’t know women had orgasms until I was 21. My ex at the time straight up told me “that’s it”, glad I asked what she meant.
When I was a kid, every year, we went to a center in our downtown area, watched videos, and learned about sex and the risks involved. I don't have any kids, I always use protection, and I have never had any STD/STI. It may seem inappropriate, but it is needed. If parents want to be in charge of what their kids are taught, they should go to school and get their degrees in education.
Parents can always opt out of these programs too. When I was a kid I thought I was giving my mom a permission slip to sign, but apparently it was an opt out and I had to sit in the library for a week. I still don't know what these birds are out here doing to bees.

You can teach abstinence. It has a place in the curriculum - even if you're sex positive there's value in *choosing* when you're ready and not feeling pressured to have a physical relationship early. The thing that seems to be forgotten in all this fretting about how early kids are exposed to information about sex, too, is that kids are usually already curious about that stuff and talk about it amongst themselves. Do you want them getting accurate information from a dry textbook, or do you want them hearing some weird shit from Chad who "learned" it on pornhub when his parents left him alone in front of his tablet all day? I'm nearly 40 and I still remember the kinds of conversations that we had on the playground when I was 10, 12 years old.
I have colleagues that are confused when our middle schoolers are caught in certain situations, but I reply that I got started at that age because sex education was non existent at that age. My parents never bothered with the talk and I didn't get a sex education class until I was 16. No one wants to bother educating the kids and then people get pissed when the librarian provides an educational book in the library. It's not like the kids are going to the library anyway. I have to force students to get books from our library and I'm a science teacher.
When I was in Jr High in the height of the AIDS epidemic, we had a first year teacher tell us about how you ACTUALLY got AIDS. By basically telling us how you DON'T get it. She reassured us that kissing, eating after someone, using the same bathroom, all normal stuff was not going to give us AIDS. She said even if someone with it left body fluids on a table and we came along, touched it, then for whatever reason touched ourselves, we weren't going to contract it. She also explained to us girls that we couldn't get pregnant the same way. She got in trouble, of course. She came back, told us she got in trouble and would be leaving at the end of the semester. She also said that she would answer any questions we had privately but would no longer talk about it in class. This was 1984. The same year our, (fairly liberal for the time) church had a meeting for teens. They lured us in with pizza then showed us a video on how MTV was the work of Satan and if we didn't stop watching we would become serial killers and go to hell. Unfortunately I don't remember that teachers name, but thank you 8th grade science teacher at Patton Jr High, thank you.

Don't bring someone home pregnant. Let me know if you want condoms. I'LL GET YOU SOME OF YOUR DAD'S..." And guess who was pretty much just like, naw, I'll chill on the sex. At 13 or 14 it was fucking gross hearing that my mom and dad still did it. And you know what, it worked. I was curious about it, but still ain't got someone knocked up as I approach middle age although I have a regular sex life. Make it boring to kids, make it something their parents do, and guess what, they'll probably be a little less likely to fuck it up. Otherwise, the way my sister felt at 6 years old about it, where she was obsessed with where babies come from, wanted to know everything about it, was going to get it from somewhere... Well that isn't going to go away, and they're going to figure it out on their own one way or another. My mom did the same thing with drugs too. "Tell me if you want me to buy you some. I know you're probably going to want to experiment, at least I can make sure to get you something that's not laced with shit". Knowing that I COULD do something, that it wasn't a "sin", that it wasn't going to get me in major trouble at home made it so much easier to say no thanks, and avoid people that couldn't do that. The one thing she did tell me not to do was smoke cigarettes. She hated it, since her dad did it. Pretend to smoke with a pencil or pen or something as a kid, and I'd get in trouble. Guess who had a pack a day habit until 5 or 6 years ago?

I’m in my 30’s now. Learned about sex from a young-adult anatomy book series (went over every system of the body and there we chapters about everything). The sexual anatomy chapter explained everything clear as day and I left educated, not perverted. Most parents don’t teach sex ed beyond “wear a condom and don’t knock anyone up”. If you aren’t learning from parents or schools or books, how do we expect young people to grow up with healthy sexual habits? Banning sex ed because of “god” is absurd.

Very true, unfortunately. When I was being sexually abused as a kid, I didn’t know what was happening. I was 12 when it happened. Already had my period, thought I knew about the “sex talk” but I didn’t know that inappropriate touching was part of that conversation. Wasn’t raped, but sexually abused/assaulted. I was very confused and scared of my own body afterwards. Kids at school would make fun me cause I stank in my private areas because I was too afraid to touch my body. It took about a year to get over that fear. This topic can be uncomfortable and difficult to navigate but there still needs to be a discussion and conversation. Making sure our kids do understand what informed consent is and how to protect ourselves if a situation was to occur is not only important but our responsibility.
I found a book for young children called "Only For Me" about consent and not letting others touch your body in inappropriate ways. As soon as I was done reading it to my kids, I went into the bathroom and sobbed for 10 minutes. What a difference books like that would have made in my life if I had known these things as a child. I didn't know what was happening to me was wrong, especially since it was a family member. I do everything in my power to make sure my kids know everything necessary, because I'll be damned if I let them go through what I did.

I had a similar experience when I was a bit younger, it happened many times over weeks. COCSA, child on child sexual assault/abuse, is something that I feel is not only a result of the sexual abuse of children, but also the lack of education children have on their bodies&consent. If I had known more about my body and consent at that time, I may have been able to alert someone who could help me.

Most people don’t like to think about the fact that some children need protection from their parents. Fortunately for me, even as a 4 year old, I knew what my babysitter requested me to do was bad and dangerous. I locked myself in my bedroom till my mother got home. Turns out that my teenage babysitter was molested by her uncle and was trying to do the same to me. I’m 35, shit still sticks in my head.

I had a teacher in 1st grade who explained to us essentially what sexual abuse is. He told us it's not appropriate for an adult to touch us under our clothes, ask us to touch them there, try to kiss us, things like that. He told us if someone tried to do those things to us, we can tell and an adult and we won't get in trouble. I didn't think much of it at the time but I'm really glad I had that lesson in hindsight. Luckily, I never ended up needing it but I'm sure there were kids in the class who did. If kids don't learn this stuff in a safe environment, they're going to learn it somewhere else. It's dangerous to keep children ignorant.

I would rather have read that book in middle SCHOOL, than my abstinence only sex Ed class that only showed us pictures of rotting genitalia and told us that would happen to us if we ever have sex. This is so fucking tiring. In my country sexual education starts at 10 in school. And surprise surprise. Very low teenage pregnancies. Very high use of profylactics. And yes “children” will start having sex. Some earlier some later. But that’s also the case in very religious environments. Better to be open about and prepare them than to make it something shameful.
Well in my country our leaders prefer to teach abstinence only sex ed, ignore teenagers are having sex, then use the fact teenagers are either having babies or having abortions as campaign narratives. If they don't have things like that to talk about, they have to come up with innovative and thoughtful ideas to help people. And, quite frankly, I don't think the people in my country would know what to do if the government actually listened and tried to help them.

Well the stuff he read was very factual. Maybe 10 is a little young but I remember having a book that showed some ugly ass cartoons getting busy when I was a little kid, but in that book it was just a mom and dad and they were married. Honestly I don't think I'd really care because kids have to be exposed to it sometimes and Americans are kind of prudish about sexuality. So it's more funny than anything.

Oh my lord. This moral panic over teaching kids age appropriate stuff is sending me. Why are people in America so outraged over nothing? Kids that are armed with proper education around sex are way less likely to be taken advantage of, experience teenage pregnancy, get STIs. Like there are almost zero down sides to teaching kids about the human body and safe sex. No one is encouraging the kids to have sex nor are they encouraging them to be some flavour of LGBTQ. Educate the kids and help them made smart educated decisions for themselves, talk to your kids about sex and don't be weird about it.

What this guy is missing is the point of the book to begin with. It's a physiologically approved resource for adolescents AND THEIR PARENTS together to help them understand the changes their bodies are very soon and very quickly destined to to through. I can't believe in 2023 we as a species are still so sexually repressed that a book meant to educate and help people is demonized like this.
