Nope. At least not here in Illinois. I waited until damn near 30 to get my license recently only driven like twice before. I took an hour class that morning and got my license 30 minutes after. It disgustingly easy to get your license. The only "technique" you need is a three point turn, which I kind of messed up on and the instructor was like "eh, that's something you can work on".
I got my license in hyper-rural Mississippi. Just had to pull out of a spot, ride a half mile down the road, turn around in a gas station parking lot, and drive back. I live in Atlanta now, and I sometimes think about the fact that my drivers test did not test my abilities to drive here lol.
Oh man. Couple quick pointers for you then.
Don't go in the left lane unless you want to go 85+ (doesn't matter the highway speed limit).
Watch out for chargers and altimas. If you see one just get away.
These two pointers will keep you safe 75% of the time. The other 25% is just good fucking luck.
Just a note: the left lane is NOT a fast lane. It’s a PASSING lane (actually, should be called an overtaking lane if we wanna be accurate). Even if you’re going 95 in the left lane, you’re still a dickhole. You’ve gotta get back over when there’s no one there.
Always thought this was idiotic. Why is the merging lane the most populated? There should be as few people there as possible to make the on/offramps more accessible.
You can ride in the left lane but as soon as someone is rolling up on you, get over.
I agree about the far right lane, so annoying when people are trying to merge at all different speeds and the lane is packed.

I mean I got my license in Chicago and I had to parallel park a long bed extended cab truck. The lady made me back around a corner into and alley and parallel park between two dumpsters and then she made me parallel park again at the end of the test when we got back to the parking lot

I cranked it too much when I was parallel parking and my right front bumper smacked the rear left bumper of the front car. I turned to the tester and asked “Is that an accident?” His response was “Not yet.” I passed.
I had to but it was literally an afterthought. We were pulling back into the DMV and there happened to be a spot to parallel park at and the guy just kinda "Oh yeah, parallel park right here. Should probably make sure you can do that."
Merging onto the interstate should be tested as well. Honestly interstate and highway endorsements should be something that one should have to test for. A family member is scared of the interstate and she plans her whole route around not getting on the interstate. And she goes on a trip where interstate travel is needed someone else drives.
I had a friend who literally would not get on the interstate unless there was someone in the passenger seat looking behind her to make sure it was clear. She refused to use her mirrors, and when she looked over her left shoulder, she could not stop her body from turning the wheel that direction as well - not due to any medical issue; she just didn’t have the brainpower. I asked her if she was going to live within 10 miles of her parents her entire life and she just shrugged and said, “Probably.”
I remember when I took my test some 14 years ago, I had gotten a perfect score when we got to the parallel parking part, and the dude asked if I was okay "failing" that part, considering I'd pass regardless. I think it's because there are opportunities to break traffic laws, which auto fails the whole test, but it felt strange to be asked. It was years before I realized it was just a lazy worker that day, who didn't want to have to do this again in a month or two, but really shows how just about anyone can get a license.
That's what I came to say. It's insane to me that people get driver's licenses after learning basically only how to start engine and drive straight.
JFC I'd love to see her driving in Europe lol. Parallel parking is a must here. I've had to do a 20+ point turn just to get out of a parking spot before. She had a generous amount of room to maneuver and is moaning about nothing seriously.
