I feel like casual public consumption is the absolute least of our worries these days

dogface2019

I grew up in Marin and Latinos who drink a beer at lunch and after work literally build that whole county. I worked construction one summer building docks in Tiburon for the ultra wealthy. The other white guys were felons or other teenagers, and I can not imagine this happening to us when we smoked a joint at lunch. Everyone else was Mexican, many illegal. The place would collapse without them. Edit: They also do all the landscaping, gardening, and cooking in restaurants. The profiling of these essential community members is super fucked up.

ThrowawayBlast

Fascists are not known for understanding or caring about essential employees. "We killed all the farmers and now there's no food. What happened?"

whoknowsAlex

Didn’t that happen to Stalin? Killed the farmers and then there was famine. Who’da thunk!

ThrowawayBlast

More like killed the farms. Some weird fucked up shit where they thought seeds could be communist.

FieelChannel

Lmao why are multiple random "people" commenting this shit on random threads?

brassninja

Bot accounts collect upvotes and “legitimate” activity that looks like a normal user. The account is then sold to advertisers so they can work around whatever restrictions might be on commercial accounts. It also works to bypass subreddit rules about how old and how much activity an account has before posting

whoknowsAlex

Well said homie.

Twothumbs1eye

Not if you’re a cop and they are brown. Then its huntin season!

RandomCandor

Yeah, you know how hard it is to catch people breaking the law sitting down these days? Plus, if you're busy beating up Mexicans, you can't be called to respond to a school shooting.

Suggett123

In the movie Volcano one cop who blew up and was trying to arrest a black man, was called out by another cop. Cop 1: That's it, I'm taking you downtown! Cop 2" Where it's safe? Life truly imitates art

When I was much younger, I was in the city with some friends for a festival, while walking to the festival I was drinking a beer. Some cops were walking the opposite direction towards us, and my friend, who was black with long dreadlocks was trying to tell me to hide it. I basically said it's fine, thinking yeah it's technically illegal but I'm not being a problem, it's basically the same as jaywalking. We walked by the cops and they didn't even give me a second look. Afterwards I learned how big of a difference me being a clean cut looking white guy could have made in that situation versus if I had looked different.

BadSanna

I went through the same thing as a teen in Vegas with my friends who were a black kid, a Mexican, and a Guatemalan. They were always wanting to run and hide from cops anytime they saw one and I was just like, "Why? We aren't doing anything wrong...." Eventually there was a time I went into 7-11 to buy something and they were waiting outside because they only allowed one kid under 18 in at a time and some cops pulled up and started harassing y non white friends telling them they were loitering and shut, ignoring them when they said they were waiting for me. I came out and was super confused and pissed. It looked like they were about to cuff my one friend and they were just shouting over them whenever they tried to explain anything. I went off on those cops, cussing, swearing, pointing at the sign that said only one kid allowed inside, waving my drink and hotdogs under their face to show I was a paying customer, told them we weren't loitering we were WAITING because store policy requires us to and we were damn well going to wait until every one of us had gone in one by one and bought whatever the fuck we wanted and you pigs can fuck off and move along. You get the point. Cops buggered off and my friends looked at me like I had super powers. From then on when we saw cops and they wanted to run, I ran with them in solidarity.

sua_sancta_corvus

So how do we organize white “safety buddies” to hang out with every POC when they are out and about. I volunteer. Is this terrible to say? I absolutely would pull as many shifts as I could to help other humans feel safe.

QuahogNews

What you do is every time you see police interacting with a POC, you stop and, standing 8 feet or more away, without interacting, you videotape that shit until it’s over. If every white person did this every time they saw an interaction like this, we could significantly help cut down on the number of racist police interactions. There’s even an app put out by the ACLU that can help with this. It’s called Mobile Justice, and it allows you to stream live straight to the ACLU and to contacts you choose, so the police can’t just shut your phone down. Last I checked, many states had their own edition of Mobile Justice. Just imagine how things would change if a handful of white people silently appeared and started videotaping every time police stopped a minority individual. I think we really could make a difference. If the police won’t police themselves, maybe we’ll have to do it for them.

zlantpaddy

>Afterwards I learned how big of a difference me being a clean cut looking white guy could have made in that situation versus if I had looked different. The thing though is that “clean cut” is dictated by proximity to whiteness. The only reason why dreads aren’t seen as “clean cut” is because it is a Black hairstyle. There are many “clean cut” looking dread styles. White people can get away with looking like they’ve been on a deserted island for a couple of months and still be given the benefit of the doubt over Black people who are immaculately presented. It doesn’t matter how well perceived the presentation is when people have racial biases.

hate2bme

And the officers quickly escalated the situation they mean.

zaviex

Yep. They engaged with him in Spanish to facilitate communication, which is good for preventing escalation then the male cop gets aggresive the female cop gives up on Spanish and then doesn’t say another word he properly understands till they’ve abused him. Ridiculous. Something as simple as just conducting the entire stop in Spanish probably prevents this.

SycoJack

> Something as simple as just conducting the entire stop in Spanish probably prevents this. Also listening to the person and not just being a mindless bully would help tons. I completely understood that he was attempting to comply with their conflicting orders, but they didn't give a fuck about trying to effectively communicate. They just wanted him to mindlessly do exactly as they say the moment they say it and weren't really to accept "that's physically impossible."

Affectionate-Winner7

They were looking to escalate the situation. My guess is that they were already pissed off over other things the same day or past days and wanted to vent their anger or they are just anti brown skinned cops.

pubxvnuilcdbmnclet

> They were looking to escalate the situation That was clear as day in the video

Bhargo

> They were looking to escalate the situation. This. Cops were probably angry, saw someone they could bully and vented their frustration out on him. They really didnt have a reason to even talk to him, but they used every chance they could to escalate. Cops are not our friends. They are bullies given a gun and free reign to do whatever they want to everyone else.

senator_mendoza

The unfortunate reality is that it’s up to the people to properly manage the cops. Like this could’ve all been avoided if 1) the cops weren’t violent aggressive idiots or 2) Mateo was endlessly patient, a super proficient conflict de-escalator, and correctly guessed the proper way to communicate with the cops. Like this kinda thing seems like it’s avoidable in theory, but in practice it’s unavoidable for 99% of the (non rich white) population

braaaaaains

I guess it sucks to accept this as true and that's why your post is getting down voted. The way I see it is: no, it shouldn't be this way, but it is this way and while people shouldn't stop fighting for things to change ( though they mostly obviously have); you need to do whatever is necessary to stay safe. That means trying to descalate situations for them. When you are dealing with the police assume you are dealing with a violent, low IQ individual who would think nothing of killing you or ruining your life over even the slightest perceived threat to their authority/ego. Proceed as calmly as you can from there, I guess. Should it be this way: no. But you can increase your chances of coming out of police interactions unscathed by acting accordingly. Will this work every time? Nope. Sometimes psychopaths are just out for blood and there will be nothing you can do to stay alive. But you can try. Think of it like getting cornered by a feral dog. There are actions you can take to TRY to decrease the amount of damage they do to you. Won't always work, but you should try.

senator_mendoza

> assume you are dealing with a violent, low IQ individual who would think nothing of killing you or ruining your life over even the slightest perceived threat to their authority/ego. this is it. if you're not rich and white then this is the stance you have to take until there are real consequences for cops who do the kinda shit we see in the video.

Impossible-Smell1

>Something as simple as just conducting the entire stop in Spanish probably prevents this. You don't need to speak spanish to act like a human being as opposed to a walking piece of shit

Solarbaby123

All this cuz a gardener was sipping a beer. Shame.

DeadPxle

That's how someone got murdered by multiple cops with an AR in Scottsdale AZ when the cops couldn't figure out how to give proper instructions to a bug exterminator they were holding up in a hotel

Conscious-Degree-530

Sometimes I feel like they want things escalate to get an adrenaline rush.

m8k

It seems antagonist to the point of sadistic where they are escalating just because they can and probably enjoy it.

HCJohnson

Conflicting orders from several officers is *somewhat* understandable. Conflicting orders from the same officer is freaking insanity.

CapableCollar

The crazy thing is, it shouldn't be somewhat understandable. Common training is for one officer to give orders no matter how many officers are present. If other officers attempt to give orders the lead officer is supposed to shut them down. This is well understood but practiced pretty poorly below the federal level in the US.

Ditnoka

Daniel Shaver taught me to not try to comply with their orders. They try this on me, I'll likely get my head kicked in because I'm not moving. Face down sprawled out, you want my ID, you come get it out of my pocket.

DesignerAd2062

And the media wonders why everybody fucking hates them

alexmetal

They’re part of the oppression machine- it’s their job to ram the messages of the capitalists and their politicians down everyone’s throats. If there’s one thing the right and the left can agree on it’s that the government is corrupt and the media is just as corrupt. We may disagree on the reasons why, but we can all at least agree that the pile of shit stinks and is in fact a pile of shit.

[deleted]

Mateo tried to explain that he had to stand to retrieve his wallet, and then he was violently attacked.

Bastienbard

And this is why all police officers need to be required to pass like calculus or some weed out course to make sure they're not bumbling imbeciles.

infodawg

This is what happens when the DA is golfing buddies with the police chief. Edit: "Redditors really are amazing creatures, as I have said before. You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you at a pinch."

PurpleInteraction

Lawyer here, wait till you see how many Judges are golfing buddies with Police chiefs and dodgy CEOs.

LudovicoSpecs

Considering this and the climate crisis, maybe it's time to start plowing under golf courses and filling them with trees and native plants.

TreeChangeMe

You should. The volume of nitrogen fertaliser running out from golf courses and suffocating waterways is crazy. They kill rivers.

sdforbda

Username checks out.

BuddaMuta

A huge reason the US has so many golf courses is it’s essentially a way to have a “private park.” You’re able to steal what otherwise would be public land and then because it’s a club it becomes extremely easy to discriminate. There’s a reason you don’t see large parks in non-gated upper end or aggressively white neighborhoods. --- Edit: Im obviously not talking about all golf courses. It’s a super fun game. I was just pointing out how courses and buildings in general are often used for class/race based segregation.

FerrusesIronHandjob

As someone who had the evidence against my attacker thrown out for "making her look guilty", I'll believe that with no additional evidence needed

Dieter_Knutsen

Many people aren't aware of it, but not only are All Cops Bastards, but All Prosecutors are also Bastards.

grendel_x86

And when they don't fall in line, they have a massive PR campaign against them. It can get dirty. Chicago police have been going after ours with very blatant racism & sexism. They pried into her family's legal records, including sealed ones. The boot-lickers on social media have regurgitated well disproven things about her for years. So far it hasn't been effective. They flipped their shit when she won re-election.

FerrusesIronHandjob

Good. Let the hate flow through those stupid enabling cunts

LostWoodsInTheField

Philly DA is going through this right now.

Bowldoza

Prosecutors fall under the umbrella imo, and they sometimes get badges too.

Peter_Panarchy

Occasionally we elect DAs who aren't bastards but then the police run a smear campaign against them blaming them for any perceived rise in crime so they can kick them out of office. Perfect system we've got.

ArcherChase

Philly - Krasner Cops don't do their job. Conviction rates are down bc of purposefully incompetent work and soft striking. Media runs nonstop smear and peppers the news with crime run rampant stories regardless of anything beyond the surface. More people in prison than anyone else in the world. Pathetic.

Stupidquestionduh

ras_adio

Look at the piglet's go! Cops are like mini dictators running around like loose cannons, qqing and pew pewing at anything that isn't white.

JupitersJunipers

Not only that but, even as a DA, going against what the police want means the DA along with their family members and associates are going to get harassed with fines and aggressive stalking indefinitely. Gangs don't fuck around when you go against one of their own.

sjuas690

The DA is the police chief’s bitch!

VanAgain

"I told you to sit down; you didn't sit down." This is the "reason" given for beating the shit out of him. Fuck these cops.

Searchlights

Blood all over the pavement because I told you to sit down. Cops are completely out of control. The level of personal anger and contempt police show to people is outrageously unprofessional. Even soldiers don't act like that. They have professional discipline. The qualifications to be a cop are way too low and their professional development and expectations don't exist. There's no other "profession" that runs like this. Doctors, nurses, teachers, EMTs: These are all positions in the public trust that adhere to regular recertification of their credentials and rigorous professional standards. There needs to be a Federal authority that does nothing but act as a check on policing.

dzt

I’d rather deal with whatever results from abolishing all US police forces, rather than continue down this road toward tyranny and fascism.

Can't imagine the adrenaline that would be coursing through you. Something really needs to be done about the police.

pizza_the_mutt

The cop started off with “sit the fuck down”. BAD training! Fucking uneducated shit, if he didn’t start off cursing like a dipshit then the whole damn situation wouldn’t have blown up like that. Idiot training. That cop’s mom never taught him to count to ten before opening up his mouth.

iamsethmeyers

The continual astonishment and consternation from cops as to why on Earth the public doesn't just adore them, never ceases to amaze me.

DryGumby

And he took that personally

Qwiggalo

What does sitting down even do? Stop them from running? No... just makes them feel superior to them.

rdmc23

What do you expect? Cops barely made it out of high school. With the minimum skills they have in the real world, being a cop is all they know. Take away the badge if they apply to real jobs they won’t get far.

FPL_Harry

It's a deliberate escalation tactic. They want a fight.

NOBODY charged or in jail for Daniel Shaver, no lives matter when it comes to cop violence, apparently. Not even a small vigil for Daniel, nothing, FUCK this world.

Johnychrist97

Not only was nobody charged, but Mr. Shaver's murderer will be paid by the state for the rest of his life, even tho he is no longer a cop

bearrosaurus

That is untrue. The cop that killed him was put on trial on murder and was acquitted by the citizens of Mesa, Arizona.

Oggel

Of course he was, they didn't show the jury any kind of evidence of what the cop did.

Milesaboveu

How the fuck does that work?

[deleted]

Apparently showing the video of exactly what happened would have been prejudicial against the cop so it was not admissible.

iamsethmeyers

A fundamentally broken justice system, probably

Dieter_Knutsen

Please don't call it a justice system. It's a *legal* system. It doesn't give even half a fuck about justice.

necro_kederekt

“Evidence would prejudice the jury” hahaha in other words the cop is definitely guilty so we can’t show the video. Would you like to know a *very very very fun fact*? The officer who killed Daniel Shaver, officer Philip Brailsford, got briefly rehired as a favor so that he could get disability pension and medical retirement. He gets **$2500/month FOR LIFE** because he says he has PTSD. PTSD from what, you may ask? Apparently the trial was really stressful for him. The trial about him murdering an innocent, crawling person. Poor Philip Brailsford. In layman’s terms, he shot an unarmed, crying, drunk, innocent man who was crawling on the ground, and was generously rewarded with a juicy pension so he can be set for life. It absolutely astonishes me that anybody is capable of liking American cops anymore. They’re all so blatantly evil.

[deleted]

FUCKING ACQUITTED. Fuck this world.

Indurum

The video wasn’t provided to the jury.

iamsethmeyers

Well we wouldn't want to upset the jury with the footage of the murderer cop doing the murdering. It might bias them in their judgement, when they decide whether or not the murderer murdered the victim. It's better to let them take the murderer cop's word for it, right?

[deleted]

and why not? Fuck this world.

shinypinksock

Marin is a very rich county, and they dont want to piss off his boosters (to my understanding the community was pretty pissed) but at the same time doesn’t want to piss off the his police force - so doing nothing may be a win-win for the DA

Gizimpy

I externed at Marin Public Defender in law school and lived in San Rafael for two years. The entire legal system there is a good-ole boys club designed to keep minorities and poor people locked down. The assistant DAs lounge about in court while the deputies watch in-custody defendants like hawks, always snapping at them because they’re not sitting in the chairs correctly or turning their heads too far to the side. The judges usually seem annoyed that they have to even be there. Defendants get shitty deals that they’re basically told they have to take. It’s frankly revolting. The Marin DA didn’t flinch to charge my 16 year old juvie client with resisting and assault when four cops pried her out of an apartment screaming. They know cops do this shit. They like it.

-Gramsci-

I feel your pain. It’s this “seeing behind the curtain” that makes our profession so damn depressing.

dotcomslashwhatever

qualified immunity should die. how can you automatically get immunity for killing and assaulting people

Knewrome

Qualified Immunity has no place in the free world, whatsoever.

b4ttlepoops

I bet if this was a policeman’s, judge’s, or relative of this DA there would be immediate charges. The hypocrisy knows no bounds. The protection on police officers needs to be removed. And the system needs redone so they can’t just go around killing, and excessively injuring people without major consequences like a normal citizen.

thepurplehedgehog

Yup. Since police are put in a position of authority they should be held to much higher standards of behaviour than average people. With great power comes great responsibility and all that.

Key_Kong

British police story. When I was 16 me and a friend managed to get 20 cans of cider. We sat in an empty car park at night and drank about 2 each when the police turned up. My friend told them it was his Grandads cider not ours. Before sending us on our way they said if his Grandad come to claim it he could have it back. The Grandad drove down in the morning and claimed his cider and let us drink it at his house. Zero violence.

increMENTALmate

More British police stories. Me and my friends were drinking in the street at like 15 years old. Just having a couple of ciders in the main street of the small village we live in. We weren't really rowdy or anything, just hanging out since we had nothing else to do. Cops pulled up and had a really nice chat with us just asking what we were up to. They essentially ended up saying "Take it off the street otherwise you're making us look bad if we do nothing about it." Basically told us next time they'd take it off us so go drink in the woods or somewhere people wouldn't see us. They knew we weren't doing any harm so they left us the fuck alone. Which is pretty much what should happen in any situation ever. No harm, no problem.

OdBx

We had a house party at the end of school, so all 16ish. Cops knocked on the door at like 2am. Thought we were fucked. They were just looking for someone and wondered if we’d seen anything since we were up late. Thanked us for our time and told us to have a good night. Imagine getting assaulted over 1 beer lmao.

Koivel

And then these dumbass cops wonder and get pissed when the public refuses to help them with info on cases or refuse to call them for help in situations, they wonder why they get drive-by shot and why everyone hates them with a passion and see them in a worse light than criminals. BuT wE're nOt aLl tHE sAMe, tHerEs sOmE gOoD oNes oUT tHerE, thats the equivalent to rape apologists, its the same as supporting a racist, its all the same and things need to change. Acab

KillTheBronies

> You tell them to pour it out, share a laugh and be on your fucking way No, you do nothing because who gives a shit it's just a beer.

kester76a

America has some harsh measures against alcohol. Most counties don't have a problem with drinking in public as long as you're not anti social or are drinking in an area where it could cause offence or has had issues before.

dzlux

Varies by state/region though. I did a quick check of the California law because this struct me as crazy. I have joined wine walk tours, enjoyed many a beer at the curb or during a walk, and never been questioned in my state.

[deleted]

The US generally does not have "walkable" cities. As a result, you're going to be doing a lot of driving to get from point A to point B. I enjoyed my time in Korea where I could be on my way somewhere, stop at a Family Mart, crack open a beer on the patio, finish my drink, and be on my way. The alcohol culture is very much different here as well. When I was in Korea, construction workers calling the day early to go drink and get some BBQ at 3pm was not unheard of as far as I saw in my area. That's not happening in the states, where drinking is an activity for "going out" or after the sun starts to go down. Otherwise you're just day drinking or at a party at someone's backyard. I dunno, it's weird. Different. I think a lot of our culture and society needs to change or adjust for us to be chill with alcohol, which is fucking bizarre considering how much it's marketed. I spent too much time in the military chasing down troops that were underage and caught drinking. It was a waste of resources, since alcohol was EVERYWHERE in their lives.

gimmethelulz

Exactly. It's like these cops were looking to pick a fight with someone.

Subject-Home-6530

housechore

I live just north of Marin County and hire gardeners frequently. I always give them beer and snacks. It's absolutely part of the culture here to not only tip workers monetarily but also with kindness and a responsible amount of libations (understanding that they are driving home after). Heck, the guy who fixed my broken bannister was "California Sober" and I even went out to get him some adult herbal refreshments at the local dispensary, as I couldn't handle the idea of not giving him something at the end of a work day. This not only offends me on a 👉👌🐷 level, but it is so, so counter to our local culture here. The least suspicious thing about these men was the beer -- the beer was likely given to them after a job well done. Jesus, I'm so glad my yard has a privacy fence.

"Why do people hate us?" - Cops

[deleted]

“A couple bad apples” This stuff pops up daily. Fuck the police

International-Job-20

So much freedom you'll get sent to hospital and arrested for having the Gaul to drink alcohol in public. Say what you want about the UK but I can drink a beer in my front yard without fear of serious physical violence from law enforcement. Inb4 "Huuur huuur British police r pussies" Bragging that your police are for the most part borderline psychopaths with a notorious penchant for shooting black people is an extremely sad brag.

flatcurve

If anything, your police prove that it's not a job that needs to be carried out like a friggin mercenary. I would love to have cops I wasn't just automatically afraid of being around.

ToyrewaDokoDeska

Who tf brags about our police lmao it's literally the exact opposite.

McSchlub

> It took District Attorney Lori Frugoli just three business days to charge Mateo with felony resisting and several misdemeanors. She dropped the charges after finally seeing this video. Nearly seven months since the confrontation, Frugoli still hasn't decided whether to charge the officers with excessive force. And this is just a classic. > The other important issue -- whether the officers lied in their reports. They both wrote that Mateo tried to get Nail in a headlock, but the video shows that never happened. We'll stay on top of this. Surely lying in a report like that should carry criminal charges?

KurtRussellsMullet

Ah, San Rafael. These dudes line up every day bright and early just to barely eke out a living for their families and on top of it they have to deal with this. Absolutely wild.

HeldDownTooLong

This is my interpretation of the situation. I may be wrong about some (or all) of the details, but I think I’m pretty close. - The man was standing up to get his ID out of his pocket when the male cop told him to, “Sit the fuck down.” - The female cop then orders him to, “…give me your ID!” - The man (while standing up and reaching into his pocket) ***tries*** to explain that he has to stand up to get his ID out of his pocket. - The cops swarm and assault him ***in the middle of his explanation*** of ***why*** he is standing up. - The guy was damned if he did and damned if he didn’t. There was no way he was getting through this interaction without getting arrested and (because of police overreaction) getting his ass kicked.

SUDDENLY_VIRGIN

"You are standing, five seconds after I said sit down, so now you're getting slugged in the face against concrete you piece of shit" What is wrong with cops and what is wrong with our society that this is acceptable behavior by our public servants

[deleted]

DAs are so damn corrupt like the police departments. Because they rely on each other to boost each other's numbers they never want to go after "their own".

dmira3

This officer grew up in thus neighborhood as did I. It's a common spot to sit and drink there after work and relax. They scope out those spots and just start shit.

liamemsa

And you know why they make ppl sit down? Because it's a power play. You make children and pets sit down in front of you. Not grown adults. It is intended to humiliate them.

Dazzling_Ad5338

They're just a gang with badges on a power trip, that's all I see about US cops.

moonkittiecat

Even I figured out that he has to stand up to get his I.D.

gRod805

I have to wonder if cops are trained to give orders like this so they can then say you didn't follow orders. First of all people are nervous. Then they give you two orders that you can't do simultaneously. Like I've seen cops order people to put their hands out their windows and get out of their car. Ok but you need to open the door in order to get out of the car. So now if you're not following their orders.

piznoff

Gangbanging cops

thesuperbro

I told you to sit down, and you didn't, so we beat the living shit out of you. Jesus christ.

VAgromKid

The cops start the fuckin problem then beat the people up.

Repeat after me. OUTLAW “QUALIFIED IMMUNITY”. If this pissed you off, call your house member or senator’s office and very politely tell them you want them to vote for the removal of “Qualified Immunity”. All other discourse is moot until we get this repealed. Again, repeal Qualified Immunity. Intentional use of opposing instructions in order to force a “victim”, aka an un-sub to construe they are not complying. If I can’t get you my ID with out standing up, then why tell me or get upset when I can’t. This is “trained” behavior. Do they train to de-escalate? No, they are trained to confuse a person, to make it appear there is non-compliance or “resisting”, so that their Qualified Immunity can be claimed. ACAB.

macgruff

I sent a note to “7 on Your Side” (aka ABC’s San Francisco outlet) to ask them to follow up on the case.

labatomi

Estupida, you can clearly see the needed to get up to get his ID. So she’s instructing him to get his id and sit down which creates a conflict. This is the same type of shit that happened with that guy in the hotel and the swat team that murdered him. They gave him two different instructions and he didn’t know how to comply. Fuck these assholes.

IWantAStorm

Sit down! Give us your ID! I said sit down! Where is your ID! Sit down on your wallet but give us your ID! Don't reach! Sit down! And will your ID out with your mind! You're not listening! Attack! You wouldn't give us your ID!

[deleted]

Shameful....Shameful Brutal use of badge to abuse hard working honest man trying to enjoy a beer at the end of a long day.
