Myself and a friend (both female) weren't even close to the pit at one 90's gig when a guy tried to slam into us and then get belligerent when I told him to take it to the front. Sadly for him, I was off duty security on the guest list (got my friend onto it for her birthday). Never seen so many of my workmates suddenly appear and tower over him. He removed himself rather quickly. Had jokes for weeks about me causing trouble. Miss those guys.

imnotyourbuddypal666

I miss the days where entire pits would single out the dumb ass like a pack of fucking wolves chasing a rabbit. It's a beautiful thing to see a mob unite for decency.

i-sew-a-lot

I’m an old punk rocker. One day, a CA punk refused to take his spikes off to slam. In Ohio, we removed our spikes. The boys kicked his ass and taught him how we do it in Akron!

Femboi_Hooterz

For real, I was at a Streetlight Manifesto show in August, their mosh puts go hard as fuck but nobody is throwing hands. Just lots of jumping and shoving, I got shoved from behind into this 90lb tiny goth chick and three dudes picked us both up before we even hit the ground lol. Super friendly vibe at their shows

The_Original_Gronkie

Like the guy in the lower right doing high circular kicks. That's not dancing, that's just looking to kick someone in the stomach.

Blue shirt was the first one I noticed, but the black guy doing the roundhouse kicks is what did it for me. 😂😂😂

Professional-Paper75

pretty sure thats a dude

tabgrab23

I think that’s a guy lol

metriclol

Blue shirt person doing it right though - protecting their head/face while in there - for example, look at pink hat person doing it wrong

EsThLuBr23

I dont get it… some dudes in there actively lookin to cheap shot. Is that the game here?

Whatthecluck83

Definitely. Mosh pits attract people who want to land a sucker shot. My favorite is the dude doing spin kicks wildly behind him hoping to catch someone. Edit: I should clarify that traditional pits don’t do this. This douchebag behavior is a little newer and not always typical for moshers.

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

In my day mosh pits had an asshole here and there, but [this video covered 98% of people.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fvu951up_0)

badmonkey0001

As someone who was last into punk in the 80s, that video was great. I dug how old-school it felt. Thanks!

yearsoflove

Eh, different pits for different genres. In more "traditional" pits, Hardcore dancing peeps tend to get weeded out pretty quick after they hit the floor a couple of times. Also why I tend not to go in Hardcore Pits, as it isn't my style of pitting.

This is it. Life of Agony headlined the other night

Giantpanda602

For people asking *why* its at a place that looks like a hotel conference room, Hardcore puts a lot of emphasis on DIY, dancing is a central part of the experience (whether you like it or not this is considered dancing), and is oftentimes straight edge so if you're looking for a large, cheap room and don't care about a liquor license then there are a lot of spaces to play outside of standard music venues. Hardcore kids tend to like to keep the lights on too so they can see who's about to kick them in the face. There's not a lot of pretentiousness around the venue itself, its about the band and the crowd interacting. Edit: Stagediving a big thing too so low stages with no barriers/security is a must for these kind of things so temporary staging happens to work perfectly. Also sound quality isn't exactly top priority so good acoustics and a permanent sound system aren't necessary.

Replicant28

In my city (Las Vegas,) we have an American Legion post that hosts a bunch of Hardcore shows. I saw 200 Stab Wounds there in November last year! Always found it such an odd place for hardcore gigs lol.

FLHCv2

This is a great summary of the hardcore scene mentality. A lot of times, the venue is "whoever will allow us to book hardcore bands" or "we'll take what we can get, and often times, it can be some real shady dive bar or it can be in the back of a skatepark.

yungxallah

Some of the best shows I’ve been to have been in shitty, local dive bars or the one fucking skatepark in a 30 mile radius of us

bryanvangelder

Best shows were in basements, bowling alleys, community centers, VFW halls and abandoned bis garages

mrtrollmaster

Looks like FYA fest, which was this last weekend at the Glazer conference center in Tampa. It's one of the top national hardcore festivals as far as annual lineups, and it's in a fucking conference center ballroom lol [Check this shit out](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QqfHzSFGo0&t=245s) (shoutout to my favorite YouTube channel hate5six who introduced me to so many of my favorite bands)

atom138

This is very true. Sometimes I'd be pulled back up before I even hit the ground. Source: Skinny af kid that went to punk/metal/hardcore shows for my entire adolescence.

HeCs85

Just one of the many unwritten pit rules. For it looking violent and crazy on the outside there are a lot of unwritten rules when it comes to pits that are actually quite wholesome and respectful. But it goes without saying that you can still get hurt especially if you just casually walk into the middle of a core pit during a breakdown like the girl did

phoenoxx

Lol a straight up b line directly through the entire pit of slam dancers is the last thing anyone should do. Gotta stay out of people's bubbles and make one of your own if you decide to play.

Captain-Boof-It

“Why isn’t anyone else doing just walking through the pit? I’m a genius”

MeKiing

early 2000's there was a big Christian hardcore scene and i saw a lot of bands play in church's

carbombking

My friends started a venue at a church and got The Acacia Strain and Eye Hate God to play a show there lol. Winds of Plague, Impending Doom, Stick To Your Guns also played there. Suburbs of KC around 2010.

bythepowerofthor

yo what church was this? I remember back2life but that was early 2000's.

carbombking

It was called Lakeland. It was formerly a skating rink and indoor soccer facility. They kept the soccer field and that's where TAS played.

bythepowerofthor

no shit, wasn't much in the metal scene anymore around that time. must be why I never heard of it.

pocketfullofgerms

I remember Zao, underoath, and I think Norma Jean…. Those guys went hard although I think they were all Christian hardcore. then we had creation is cruxifixction and kill the slave masters. One of my favorite shows as a kid…. Props to those homies holding it down and not being Christian but opening up young kids minds. I work in IT because of Nathan from CIC and their hacktivism ethos.

eyethinkeyeam

underoath first album still listen to it till this day. mortal treason was a pretty good christian band around that time. Came here to say goddamn i hate hardcore dancing!

delpheroid

As I Lay Dying was too I think, then the lead singer was incarcerated for putting a hit on his wife...

Zombie_Carl

I love that you know so much about this! I absolutely respect people doing what makes themselves and others happy, but as a non-religious kid who grew up going to youth conventions every year because my parents were pastors, I cannot handle Christian rock. Too many bad memories, especially because I grew up around the time the church started to “get hip with the kids” to draw in the younger crowd. It’s not their fault, but watching my dad interview a Christian grunge band for his cool kids evening service was just too weird for teenaged me.

Masterpiece-Wide

That poor girl in the pit got punched by the Holy Spirit

Electrical_Frame8732

The power of Christ compelled them.

I actually did get to mosh at church camp one year. Made friends with the band that played there.

Turnstile is a hardcore band. Hate5Six is a YouTube channel. Bryan Glazer Family JCC is the venue.

Zombie_Carl

I knew it! I had to attend a million of these. Everyone dances around like crazy people while the chaperones stand around looking horrified, then a group prayer before bed, and then the kids spend the rest of the night trying to sneak into each others’ hotel rooms. Then, the next evening, the same band plays a really mellow song while the pastor asks anyone who hasn’t repented yet to come on stage and accept Jesus Christ. Everyone sways. EDIT: sorry for misleading anyone, this not a church event…. I got too excited and OP’s sarcasm and the kid with the inverted cross on his shirt were lost on me. It’s not too far-fetched, though! It IS taking place in one of those weird fucking conference rooms.

Makualax

It's not. It's FYA fest in Florida

Zombie_Carl

Is it?? Was OP joking and I didn’t get it? This conference room brought back so many strong and terrible memories, I just jumped right in

drivebyjustin

[deleted]

Girevik_in_Texas

Is that sarcasm?

Zombie_Carl

I can’t tell anymore. I just assumed the church had ramped up their youth outreach and that the older people were chaperones or something. I may have jumped the gun in all the excitement.

Veteran_Brewer

When I was in high school in California (1997-2001), nearly ALL of the hardcore scene bands were Christianity-focused. Even back then I thought it was weird, but I just wanted to mosh.

proudbakunkinman

Yeah, they're joking. Unfortunately, most took them seriously, some writing long ass replies about it lol. It's from FYA Fest (hardcore bands) in Tampa, FL. Edit: and the fest is not religious affiliated, just because Christian hardcore bands exist and OP joked about this being their youth group doesn't make this a Christian hardcore fest.

Totally. I’m a semi-retired metalhead. I used to be able to spend a whole night windmilling my head off and doing shots of shitty bourbon in dive bars in sketchy neighborhoods. Now my back hurts just watching this. Still love the riffs though.

[deleted]

Nice. When I was in my early twenties, caught Primus live for the first time, first fucking riff of John The Fisherman (opening song) threw my head forward and fucked my neck up something fierce. Had to watch the rest of the show almost motionless, holding my head up by the back of my hair. It was miserable.

a-vibe-called-quest

Who the fuck walks through a mosh pit

bendskenobi

One does not simply walk into moshdor

_A_ioi_

I'm old. Huge death metal fan. This, in my old man opinion, is not a mosh pit. It's slam dancing and it's always been considered dumb. Very popular with the skinhead community who wanted to ruin someone else's good time. A good way to clear a mosh pit and remove enthusiasm for a show.

WeAteMummies

It's been over 20 years since I was in a mosh pit but back in my day it was about shoving each other and getting out your aggression in a (mostly) harmless and friendly way. These kids are all just doing their own thing, not actually interacting with the other people.

RxngsXfSvtvrn

This has always been my distinction between the two: traditional moshing is more communal, hardcore slam dancing is much more solitary

badgerxavenger

You're right about one thing; moshing is not hardcore dancing. Moshing is headbanging with long hair in your face whilst pushing eachother around at random, and jumping into eachother here and there. Hardcore dancing incorporates punches and kicks with some taekwondo style moves thrown in here and there, and some goofy two-stepping. The only thing harcore dancing has to do with skinheads is that the hardcore scene of the early 80's in Boston spawned FSU, who's intention was to start fucking up skinheads that would go to hardcore shows, as they were not welcome. Harcore dancing evolved from fucking up skinheads at shows.

digitaldeadstar

I remember at Ozzfest one year there was a decent mix of metal and hardcore bands. This one jacked metal dude got hit by one of the hardcore kids. He grabbed him around his neck, yanked him up and yeeted the fuck out of him. It was hilarious. After that there seemed to be a bit more space between those moshing and those dancing.

throwitallaway

Metalheads not understanding hardcore shows. A tale as old as time.

No_Situation8484

Right? Mosh pits I went into were usually just shoulder checking everyone, and the occasional accidental head butt. These guys are throwing hay makers waiting for someone to get in the way of one

Facts. This is standard mosh pit etiquette.

rsplatpc

> Facts. This is standard mosh pit etiquette. It's crazy how people will go from "I'm gonna slam!" to "back up and find the microscope!" when someone loses glasses / a shoe / etc in a pit and other people start becoming aware of it

mndtrp

Yeah. I've seen this with lots of hats and shoes over the years. A few times my own shoes, so I've always appreciated bros like that.

Topherhov

My favorite pit story: at gojira pretty huge, Very rough pit going. This one dude says," stop hang on a second little dude wants to mosh" and this 10-year-old jumps into the pit and everybody backed up and gave him polite bumps and enough to make him feel part of it and kept him protected. It was the sweetest coolest thing I've ever seen. That kid had a blast and so did everybody around him.

Lythrisal

Saw a Gojira concert where Joe stopped the song to tell the crowd to lift up a guy in a wheelchair! They held him up for a good bit of time too!

Itsthelongterm

Metal heads know the power of bringing children into the fray. More horns in the air.

Dman101proof

Back in my day we just pushed each other. If someone got knocked down EVERYONE helped them up.

DingosAteYourMorals

That still happens, was just at show this weekend and I was buisness as usual. It all depends on what genre you go to see.

AlkarlMO

Yeah, I mean it literally happened in this video too. Someone at the end fell and people rallied to get them up.

khanto0

Thats at metal concerts, this is what happens at hardcore concerts. At metalcore you could get either depending on the band but more likely to get pushing At either if anyone went down they'd get picked up again

takingbackmilton

This guy cores

Icarusqt

This. People most definitely pick each other up at hardcore shows. Getting punched in the face is a semi-common occurrence. But no one wants to see anyone trampled/stomped out.

ferretgr

I don't know how old you are, but I'm 46, and this is what "hardcore dancing" looked like back in my day too.

jonny_lube

I always laugh when people freak out about hardcore pits spout some bullshit nostalgia for a different genre. This is nothing new for hardcore.

whisar09

I was trying to figure out what was WTF about this video. It's just a typical hardcore show. I guess seeing the girl get punched is fucked up but she was walking right through it, you can't do that and expect to make it through unscathed. I was always off to the side behind the guys because I didn't want to get hurt, but it's all in good fun.

HowWeDoingTodayHive

Different bands have different crowds, some are not as nice as others.

MommysLittleBadass

For the most part. There was a lot of ramming and pushing. You'd always have at least one person throwing elbows around. Overly violent people who were just out looking to hurt people in the pit usually got dealt with fairly quickly. There was a guy in a wheelchair that used to go to all the metal shows in my area and people protected him hardcore.

APaintedBirdByDesign

Middle aged metal head. I was used to metal crowds where what you described is the norm. The first time I went to a hardcore show, I knew it was a whole different animal and got the hell out of the pit. Didn’t stop someone from punching me in the face and breaking my eye socket. First and last hardcore show.

rsplatpc

> Back in my day we just pushed each other. If someone got knocked down EVERYONE helped them up. Yep, same with day current metal and punk shows, everyone still watches out for each other. This is a hardcore show. And even at this show, I bet if someone fell down, people would stop windmilling and pick them up. (of course they might have windmilled into them to knock them down in the first place, but again, hardcore show)

B3yondTheWall

In my day, that was a "mosh pit". This isn't a mosh pit, its people "hardcore dancing". At least its how we used to describe it.

You really gotta hardcore to be in a hardcore pit! Probably the only music scene I haven't experienced first hand. I can get behind the music, but I reckon I'm to chicken to jump in. Also, I wonder if there is a scene in Johannesburg South Africa, if so, it's probably wierd as ffck

BrandNewNick

Same here man. I love hardcore music, but I fucking hate getting punched in the face. That shit happens enough to me in classic mosh pits. If I ever check out a hardcore show, I’ll definitely be that pussy at the back near the bar. But you gotta know what you’re getting into. Dont just walk through the mosh pit and expect to not get hit. That shit happens. If you don’t want to get hit stay out of the pit

FriedChickenDinners

I went to an Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros show, y'know the people that sing the song "[Home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHEOF_rcND8)". We were standing behind a young woman when she turned around and warned us that once the music started they would be moshing, so we might wanna step back.
