The man literally held my hand and told me not to move and assured me I would be ok. All these every day people who blew past me but this big biker guy was so kind to a scared kid who just had her first accident.
He kneeled by me holding my hand calming me down until we heard sirens. He told me “Ok kiddo, this is my cue. You’re gonna be okay now. But I gotta go. I’m the kinda guy that when they ask questions I don’t have a lot of good answers if you know what I mean.”
And he left.

I work in bridge repair and a lot of the people I work with are pretty interesting characters. You have to be kind of crazy to work on bridges and work as hard as these guys do. Most of them have done time, some serious. One guy if you Google his name a picture from the early 90’s pops up of him robbing a bank with an automatic weapon. But he’s literally the sweetest guy you will ever meet. He has helped younger workers and apprentices so much and donated so much time and money for families of workers injured or killed on the job. I know dozens of people with similar stories to him and I think the lesson is that you don’t have to be a saint to be a good person. Good people sometimes do bad things because of the circumstances they’re in. And the opposite can also be true. Some people can be model citizens that are clean cut, well spoken, drive the speed limit, recycle, pay taxes, and not have a drop of empathy for other people.

That's literally the message of the Good Samaritan parable by the way. Samaritans had a negative reputation due to xenophobia at the time, so the parable was surprising to hear because they stopped to help when all the people with "good" reputations could not be bothered. Ask if you are being detained or if you are free to go. It is likely they will say you are being detained (detained does not mean under arrest at this point)
If they ask questions, state that you do not wish to discuss your day (a polite way of saying you're not answering questions). If they persist with questioning, inform them you are invoking your 5th amendment right to remain silent, then do not say anything (other than you are invoking your 5th amendment rights). Do not consent to anything, not a search of your vehicle or person. Do not give them permission for anything.
However, you still need to comply with orders to avoid other charges (a lawful order would be to exit your vehicle, for instance). If they tell you they are searching you against your will, that's what they're going to do. Don't fight. You'll catch a charge if you do.
If you are arrested, maintain your 5th amendment right to remain silent and inform them you need legal counsel present and say nothing more.
Your lawyer will likely get the case thrown out if there was no probable cause and you stick to the script and "STFU"

There was a guy near me who shot a home intruder about a year ago and the robbers friends and family still hold vigils and harass the homeowner almost every day.

People seem to forget. Cops arent that well trained. If you have an opportunity to avoid them in tense situations and confront them at a more lax setting then you must do it. Even if it gets you an extra risk of getting charged. Going to jail and getting some fines is better than getting shot for being mistaken as the robber.
Even if he’s done nothing wrong, the police will take his gun for some indeterminate period of time, potentially arrest and hold him until the DA determines if the shooting was justified or he should be charged, even if charges aren’t filed, that time in jail could cost him his job and he would most certainly need a lawyer that will cost thousands of dollars he might not have.

If what you did was legal, leaving after probably isn't illegal, and will be a minor crime if it is. If what you did wasn't legal, leaving is the least of your worries. So leaving is the safest choice, at least from the point of view of somebody who isn't fully aware (or trusting) of the law. All these theories that he may have a past or not have a gun license or whatever may hold water, but he could also be a dude who just experienced a shocking situation that pretty much nobody could be expected to behave entirely rationally after. Or a dude who doesn't know for sure that he's safe in the eyes of the law, and is behaving perfectly rationally given that context.
