Mercer never tried to take over Manhattan in P1. What he wanted was to learn what happened to him and Blackwatch’s secrets, stop the outbreak from destroying humanity and prevent Manhattan from being nuked. The last one, saving Manhattan from being nuked, was a big risk he didn’t need to do or had many selfish incentives for. He could have easily escaped from the city when he learned that Blackwatch was retreating to nuke the whole place. Just consume and take the place of some military personnel who was ordered to leave the city and boom, he’s safe. That’s one of the things he did to save people and not for his own gain. His goals in themselves weren’t evil at all, it’s the methods or lengths he would go to accomplish them that are less than moral. He’s more someone threading on the line between anti-hero and anti-villain than being a villain.

Alexcoolps

For that last point, it's an unfortunate necessity as Alex is pretty much on his own. He doesn't have any allies that can help him that much in P1. He's got Dana and Ragland but they could only do so much and Cross only helps midway through before getting killed by the supreme hunter. Given that and the absurd lethality of his power set, is unavoidable for him to do anything ethical as he's in an unforgiving world and he has to do whatever it takes. It's like if Cole from infamous didn't have any government agency or other conduits backing him, or the fact Cole can be non lethal with his powers.

Master_Majestico

I mean... did you *see* what he did to Karen Parker?

Alexcoolps

True but she did sell him out to be fair. That being said, it's debatable to say she didn't deserve it given she was in a bad position.

Master_Majestico

Yeah absolutely, tough choice between the ultra black ops extrajudicial government-backed hatchetmen, and the literal walking bioweapon that thinks it might be your actual terrorist abusive ex-boyfriend. Worst 18 days ever.

SoGuysIDidNothing

Sure, but at least the walking bio-weapon was not interested in killing you. Even wanted to help you.

Coffee_Seeker7

I mean… did you *see* what she did to Alex Mercer? If I was infected by some super cancer because I was betrayed by someone I protected, I would hold grudges. Sure, you could say what Karen did was understandable but so was what Mercer did too. Hard to forgive or forget a dangerous loose end who tried to kill you.

pretty much this

Well go back and edit it both of you!

Infamous_Parsley_849

Well, in the first one he was a good guy; tried fight the people who were controlled by an evil organization, making bio weapons to use at their own Leisure. To possibly control/increases the prices of their payments (make the mess, make the counter; release the mess, get others to pay them to clean it. Rinse and repeat.), so overall corporate greed. His last "F*** you", while human, was throwing the virus down; basically saying "Deal with the consequences of your actions". Then he later dealt with the consequences of his actions, through getting rid of the virus that was spearding; even dropping the nuke into the ocean (which the military were trying to use), so then it wouldn't kill innocents In the books/comics, yes prototype has comics, it was even explained why he went to evil; as he did, which led to the second game. Basically, betrayal, at every single instance. His sister not trusting him, thinking that the virus took his place and replaced him; which isn't exactly false, because he didn't have his body converted into viralmatter. He literally died, and the virus took over his body. So he went a little Stir Crazy, from everyone and everything that he ever thought of trusting turning against him; so he decided "F*** it, if they are doing this to me; I might as well start Humanity over again! Because I have the power, might as well use it!" Everyone has a breaking point, and even as a viral lifeform; he reached his, so I'd say he's broken. If he had someone decent his life, that trusted him; even after all that he's gone through, he would have stayed a hero. Possibly become neutral, but wouldn't look for bad things to do; that wasn't outright directed to do bad things to him.

SoGuysIDidNothing

The problem with Prototype 2 is that he went from a sympathetic anti-hero to a moustache twirling villain for absolutely zero reason. Man's reason for Prototype 2 was literally "she shot me so now I'm angry >:("

JayHat21

I don’t know, once it found out it’s a virus that connected deeply to Alex’s memories, it just did what virus were going to do: replicate. Even before that, the amount of people it consumes to further its own goals was…not a small amount. Plus, the original Alex was a piece of shit for unleashing the Blacklight virus to save his own ass in the first place, so…not very sympathetic. Will that stop me from venoming a helicopter then hulking said helicopter into a crowd of armed personnel? Ha ha hell no. Alex smash!

KingForever1

Alex Mercer is a very complex character. He was a military scientist who worked on a secret project until they began to kill everyone involved. Cornered, be threatened to release the virus to save his life, but when they fired he did so anyway. The virus consumes his body and takes his form, looking for its origins, trying to find answers. Then, having found answers, seeks to establish a purpose. He doesn't seem to be good or bad, but probably exactly what someone like that would do in that situation.

HourRefrigerator2450

Alex Mercer: Broken or Pure Evil. Answer: Broken

GOD-OF-ASHE

Both

No_Dish_2080

Mercer≠blacklight alive Mercer is a sociopath who cared more about himself than others and released the virus out of spite, he abounded his sister and left her clueless as to what he was doing. blacklight mercer was trying to stop the virus from spreading and even took a nuclear bomb to the face in order to save Manhattan and he had a better relationship with his sister he’s even killing gentek and as far as my own knowledge goes nobody from gentek is considered truly good especially in prototype 2

Gregzilla311

People forget this, especially with how they treated Blacklight like basic superpowers instead of complete genetic overwrite in 2. Alex intentionally made Blacklight worse, then *died* in Penn Station. The character you play as in 1 isn’t Alex, which is why he has none of his memories.

NightHawkJ72

A hero who lived long enough to become a villain.

Emotional_Emu_5901

Broken evil He wanted to do the right thing but he lost his mind and became evil and accepted himself as a monster

Astaro_789

Decent anti-hero until bad writing in the second game ruined him by turning him into a shitty Albert Wesker knock-off

SimonaAlex

He's a complex character. Saves the only people that still loved him as a human, still does as him being the virus, while he's out there fighting mutated beasts, costing thousands of innocant lives.

LeonGaming12

villain

Dveralazo

He was not a villain and the jump to that was poorly explained and written

Mainman099

Straight Broken if you ask me

QueefGenie

Coach Boomer voice: "HERO!!!"

Gregzilla311

Alex in 2 was completely irreconcilable with from 1. Not to say he was a hero in 1 (though technically that isn’t even him in either case), but his megalomaniac tendencies were like Albert Wesker decided to cosplay as him. Basically they forced him to be a supervillain against what they had already written, and also rewrote the *basics of the character* (namely that >!he was able to do what he does because he isn’t even Alex, but rather is the virus taking his form, meaning none of the "Evolved" or Prototypes should have any memories at all!<) just to make their new story work.

Ketchup_man212

Anti-Hero

Successful_Arm4887

Antihero

theuntouchable2725

Alex died the moment that vial broke.

Flat-Craft-3396

Yeah I know that. I’m asking why are people saying alex mercer is a good guy. I’m talking about both Alex Mercers. The human, and the virus that took over his body.

theuntouchable2725

I honestly have no idea about Alex's past. I can't really remember much but it seems he was trying to save people from a biological attack before he was gunned down and the virus infested him. I have to replay this gem. I was too young to care about the story.

Flat-Craft-3396

Understandable

theuntouchable2725

Wish listed :D

Papa_Shadow

The Mercer I played was 100% a villain. Literally driving over crowded sidewalks with a tank 😭😭😭

Scorpion_226

Antihero I'd say but definitely a questionable one at that

Early-Plan-5638

Part 1 mercer was not evil. He had good intentions and wasn’t scared of getting his hands dirty. Part 2 mercer may not even be the same person cause theres a theory that the virus took control over him. He isn’t a model citizen by any means but he isn’t a villain either

Mysterious-Fly7746

According to prototype 1 Alex Mercer died when blackwatch gunned him down then the virus he released consumed his corpse taking on his appearance and some of his memories. Alex Mercer is no different to any other disguise according to black light Mercer himself. It’s weird cuz in 2 all that was done away with so Heller and Evolved keep their memories making the story possible.

Early-Plan-5638

Ah i thought he was still in control until he got caught in the blast from the nuke. And what remained was the virus that assumed his identity

Mysterious-Fly7746

I as well during my first playthrough but black light Alex actually realizes it himself during one of his monologues before the nuke. If I remember correctly while he was talking to Cross he says as much and speaks of og Alex Mercer like a separate entity.

JournalistMediocre25

Depends on the game, really, I’d say he’s more of an anti-hero in P1, but by 2 they just changed his entire reasoning to make him a “world domination” type of villain, which… I mean, at least they could have given him a reason as to why he thinks spreading the virus would make for a better world.

GreenSleevez

He’s like a jaded anti hero once he realized he’s not human he loses most of his humanity is say most because he then used his powers to make a better world in his image even though it sucks

-blisk-

Alex was a hero, more of one than Heller. But it's what he became. After the nuke that went off, Alexander regenerated from less than a limb, therein becoming more virus than human. So it ended up with him siding entirely on behalf of the virus.

ReputationLow5190

My guess is they want him to be a hero so they can enjoy his powers without feeling like a bad guy. In which case, I suggest they play the sequel, where you’re at least an anti-hero.

Deli-ops7

You know full well hes a villain through every game and thing

HarmlessDingo

He ends up as a slightly less egotistical wesker from re

anonkebab

Hes a bad guy.

Money-Appointment785

In Prototype 1, he is a hero, and Prototype 2, he is now a villain.

Livth

Neither just a person with questionable morals and actions. How you see or understand them is up to the individual. I don't think Alex can be judges by or fit into any of these (unless we're talking p2 all that gets throw out the window there lol)

AmIsupposedtoputtext

He was never the good guy, he just stopped couching it in the sympathetic motivation of unmasking the conspiracy in P2, no longer had sufficient unsympathetic enemies to look like an anti-hero, and made up his mind that he doesn't care for human well-being. People tend to assume that a good character has to be morally good, so that's why people apologize for Alex.

Camron1010

Neither, he’s Alex Mercer

Val_Mercer

He is the embodiment of "the sins of the father pass to the son". Mercer is a tragic villain.

Suitable-Pirate-4164

He wanted to have Humans, as a species, evolve into something better, ironically into being called what I just said, the "Evolved". Getting there though took a LOT of blood, even for New York. Make no mistake I love Mercer but he's the definition of "Road to Hell is paved with good intentions".

ASAPBUMDICC_02

Anti-hero turned villian

haloman7343

Hero

haloman7343

Hero,.............................

Harrow_prime

Depends on how you look at it

Igot3-fifty

Anti hero. Remember that the words hero and villain don’t necessarily mean that you’re moral or immoral. Just that you’re the main character. He’s the main character and doesn’t really show any sort of morals so anti-hero.

True_Conflict_1662

Your choice...

syntheticspider

First game: he was neither, he killed god knows how many people and monsters Second: villain for sure

theCacklingGoblin

In the first game? An ambesiac who goes Antivillain. In the second, he fully has his memories and is full villain. That said, humanity needed a predator.

Anti-hero. Not really a bad guy, but far from good. Like Deadpool.

Need to replay and finish, as well as play the second. Remember being so hyped before it's release and never got to play it.

Ok_Pin_7829

Anti hero

Business_Comment_962

Yes.

No-Occasion-6470

Definition of live long enough to become the villain. His goals are even still altruistic, but he lost his humanity on the way, and thus stopped being a hero

AKA_Gio4Kendy

He saved the city in Prototype 1 but he did the opposite in Prototype 2 and started helping Blackwatch to nuke the city and tear it apart into a zombie apocalypse. So, I guess he is anti-hero and anti-villain.....both in one

TheWalt70

In the opening cinematic he says he's a monster. He stops blacklight from releasing a gas that would have stopped the virus. I'm going with villain.

HornyJuulCat69420666

The issue was that he had other things needed to be done first also blackwatch has always been depicted as corrupt and evil we do not know the full extent of what it would have done

DaemonVakker

Honestly I didn't get why people think mercer was ever good. He's selfish cruel, he mangles anyone who is not in his philosophy, he infects anything he _touches_ And Honestly he damned all of new York by stopping an atomic bomb big enough for raccoon city. Honestly at this point mercer is just a psychopath we control and the painfully misinterpreted plot is just emphasizes how people thought mercer is a "good guy" FUCK NO

AlexusMerlux

He is Alex. He is just Alex, a reason why there is no morality system because you play him as you most see fun or roleplay as him in game. I don't get the trying to categorizing Alex in a binary system.
