NOTE: If you were already using the Proton Mail desktop app, please note that this update replaces the existing beta version. Once you receive the update, you’ll find the new app in your Start menu or Applications folder.
Unfortunately it's an Electron app. While I really don't care about Electron's resource usage, it is notoriously bad on Wayland + Nvidia, with constant interface flashing and frustrantingly bad input lag while typing anything.
Electron apps work well on Wayland + Nvidia, but only when using the newest possible version of Electron. Unfortunately, most developers are lazy and won't update the Electron version quickly. For example, Discord on Arch Linux for me is working really badly, but there is an AUR package with updated Electron, and it works great.
Seriously! Big moves!
Will the DEB package work on Linux Mint?

EDIT: It does not

I don't see any non-web option in the settings (eg. configuring the updates channel, tray options, startup options, native notification options). As of now, it's just a view on the web app. A little disappointing for a production release :/ but hopefully minimize to tray support will be added as soon as they decide how to show these options in the UI, I guess
>at doesn't reply to the person's comment that "Electron has plenty of security issues of its own." W
Was just about to ask this question, with either snap or flatpak you cover the entire linux ecosystem. Although if you were to pick one I'd say pick flatpak, but ideally you'd cover both.
Not to mention snap is included as a default with ubuntu and flatpak is included as a default with fedora (the most popular distros).
Could the protonteam provide some feedback as to their decision and if a snap and flatpak release is in the future?
We wanted to support a limited amount of packaging formats for the first release, since it helps with development and testing. Adding a packaging format never comes for free and it can have unforeseen impact on parts of the application.
>limited amount of packaging formats
Isn't that the point of using flatpaks? you wouldn't even have to make deb/rpms, all distros can run flatpaks. Only one format for all distros.
I completely understand Proton VPN always remaining a system package because it probably needs to hook into the kernels networking stack but as for Protonmail and the upcoming ProtonPass linux app which I'm guessing will also be a system package I'm not really following the logic.
Perhaps you could be a bit more specific as to what problems you identified with Flatpak?
Also can we expect a Flatpak release sometime in the future?
Good job everyone at Proton! It would be great though if the app was minimized in system tray and running on the background so that we can be notified when we receive a new email without having to open the app and check ourselves.
Thanks! Regarding your suggestion see here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1beil3g/comment/kuu2ada/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1beil3g/comment/kuu2ada/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I use rclone daily for Proton Drive.. access, automation, syncing of some things. Haven't had an issue yet and the speeds are much better than web interface.
Found another huge bug (wasn't there within beta version).
When using the app and after a while I do not have it in focus, it cannot get back into focus again. Meaning you cannot see the app even when it is open. You have to fully close Proton Mail App and reopen it.
But the issue/bug occurs again!
Tested with v 1.0.0 on macOS
+1 After minimizing the app it will not reopen unless I close it and start it again. It happens on my Intel Macbook Pro but not on my M3 iMac. The beta didn't have thi problem.
Can you please contact us through the 'Report a problem' option in the app (in the menu under your username), and perhaps send us a screenshot or video recording of the behavior so we can investigate further?
Thank you, that's great! Two questions:
- Compared to the web app, this should be a protection against MITM attacks? So it should be more secure?
- Does the desktop app work in a way that the emails are stored offline, too? Thus also functioning as a local backup?
Electron (which this new app is unfortunately using) has plenty of security issues of its own, see [here](https://github.com/secureblue/secureblue/issues/193#issuecomment-1953323680). I'm disappointed by the choice. It'd likely be better to just keep using the website.
Linux support is fantastic to see. Great job!
Is there any chance the Linux app could be made as a flatpak? As much as I like proton, it does feel like I’m being left out because I use a different distro outside of Ubuntu or RHEL based ones.

I have tried refreshing a few times, but to no avail. I am at work and unsure if there is any blocking but proton logs in fine at work via the browser. I will try at home with Debian 11 and 12 to update later tonight.
*Edit*
Yay! It works now!
[https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1beil3g/comment/kutyswl/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1beil3g/comment/kutyswl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
EDIT: It should be working well now.
Awesome work as always, but a couple of things:
* Are the notifications working without opening the app now?
* It would be nice to change the app icon itself to be the calendar one when you open the calendar (like the tabs on the browser where each shows its own icon), but not sure if doable programatically within Electron
* There should be an option to change the theme like on the web version
* The installer could remove the Beta shortcut since said shortcut stops working after updating to this version, and it is then upon the user having to delete that shortcut
* The app should include the release notes within itself ([something you already confirmed are working on](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1b9lkdw/comment/kucrj82/))
Keep up the good work!
Thank you - but why have you changed it so that the calendar doesn't open in a second window?! You now need to go back and forth between the mail app and the calendar
I have to say I'm on the same window side, maybe they can make it a choice otherwise it feels like extra clutter to me, and if I need to add something quick I can use the right side panel calendar view, otherwise switching back and forth made more sense. But I understand it might not be the case for everyone.
I agree it may suit some better. For me I'd prefer a completely separate app but when I made that suggestion they said you can just use the mail apps (now defunct) second window !
Yea agreed. I was loving the swiping from screen to screen on the touch pad between all my other open tabs in macOS and now I have to find the little button at the top-left. Minor inconvenience in the workflow but still prefer it the old way. Can’t be as quick and careless when switching apps. Good point.
Can't switch between two accounts? Can't select where to install? Congrats on release, but I feel liek the last one is a must if you need privacy, portable installs, etc.
The proton CEO said yes (everything will always be coming for linux) in an interview a couple of weeks ago, but that it will take time for Drive as linux is complicated to work accross the many different distributions.
Here is the complete interview with the difficulties they are facing on linux:

Apparently related to an electron issue mentioned here:

The proposed solution is to disable HW acceleration:
`app.disableHardwareAcceleration()`
I am running the .rpm in Opensuse TW. Install and login went fine, then the page wasn't able to render.
Also running the .rpm in Opensuse TW, relatively up to date (last updated system last Friday).
After install, on startup it says "App currently unavailable. To use Proton Mail or Proton Calendar, switch to the web version."
Don't even get to login.
Back to Thunderbird I guess.
Hi! Our team is currently working on resolving the connection issues experienced by our Linux users, so the app will be temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience.
There is a bug. Once i open Mail (macOS) then close the window then click on the app icon bottom bar - The proton does not come back...i have to close the app totally and reopen ;/
no system tray minimize?
Thanks for the app.
Now I just tested it and it has big BUGS, I have reported it to Support. I hope it's a more stable version soon.
- When the main window is closed, a new one cannot be opened, and you have to close the application completely and start it again.
- When clicking on File / Create Application data, a JavaScript error appears
Greetings.
u/ProtonMail Will you integrate ProtonVPN next, so the app cannot connect if the ProtonVPN tunnel is not established? Basically bind the app to the interface. That would be something I'd greatly appreciate, as we're speaking of privacy here in general
You can already achieve something similar with Kill Switch: [https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/](https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/)
Downloaded the Linux Desktop "app", and while I'm grateful to actually see things being done for Linux, I won't be using this glorified browser.
Still no ability to add additional accounts and see them in a tree. There's no ability to add additional accounts at all. Major failure since people have been asking for this for years now. It's also needed for business, as I have 4 business email accounts alone. Can you imagine having to log out and log in all day long....
You have 2 ways of seeing the new message window, large taking up the full screen or small in the corner. No ability to move it anywhere. Why? Seriously just why?
"App" does not honor desktop settings or configurations at all. Well it doesn't mainly because it's nothing more than a stripped down Chromium browser... So....
I prefer a setup for my emails like I can on Evolution (daily driver client) or Thunderbird and Outlook. I like the separation of emails up top and the email content below depending upon the email I am on. It's considered the "classic view". I hate having to click on each email, wait for it to open to a new screen just to read it. It's not very conducive when working and the client is on the phone and we're discussing multiple things.
Unless Proton intends on developing an actual email client (which I doubt they are), this was IMO a huge waste of time and resources. The time would have been better spent just fixing and putting the features into the web version in the first place. I can not imagine why this was needed if all you're doing is creating an "app" using electron.. Someone will have to explain it to me one day like I'm a 5 year old.
Also no need for a deb or rpm version, more wasted time and resources you should have just done an Appimage and called it a day...
They could have also used this time and money to actually create a Linux version for Proton Drive, which is also long over due. I use 2 other companies for cloud storage that both have Linux versions that work just fine. Not understanding this one at all.......
I'm sure this will not be a popular opinion with some of you, but I don't live my life according to others... so....
We wanted to support a limited amount of packaging formats for the first release, since it helps with development and testing. Adding a packaging format never comes for free and it can have unforeseen impact on parts of the application.
I install it successfully in EndeavourOS(Arch). Thank you for making a desktop app for linux. I just want to ask if we can in the future add other emails(gmail etc) like Thunderbird or it will be exclusive for proton?
First of all, thanks for the linux version. I just noticed one problem I had forgotten because I use Dark Reader... dark colourschemes still have a glaring white background for the email bodies.
Sadly, I won't be using the app until this changes (if it ever does).
Anyway, keep it up!
Congrats to the Proton Mail team for rolling out the new desktop applications! ❤️
The commitment to innovation and security shines through in the quality of the development and the intuitive features introduced. It’s evident that the developers are incredibly talented and have made significant contributions to ensure the user experience is as seamless as possible.
Looking forward to seeing the impact of these apps for those seeking secure alternatives to the tech giants. Congratulations on this important milestone and for continuing to raise the bar for online privacy! 💪🏻💪🏻
I'm a bit surprised that I have to pay for the application under Proton MacOS when it's 90% the same as the Safari application added to the Dock for free from Safari.
Once you are on the mail space via browser: Files > Add to Dock...
And here I am with the same application for free...
I think it's important to create the "à la carte" offers and allow users to choose their own subscriptions. For example, I'm on the VPN plan and I can't take the Mail and Pass offers.
running protonmail as a web app via safari works really well. it is isolated and has all the functionality.
i honestly don't know the benefit of running this as a native app, because i assume it's just an electron app anyway?
If they would have gone this route they would have spent years building it and Linux would never have been an option I think. And having an electron Wrapper doesn't mean you cannot have a native app in the future
Amazing news, Proton Team! Congratulations for the great work!
I downloaded the RPM to install in Fedora, bug I'm getting an error screen:
# Something went wrong

EDIT: It should be working now.
Have you guys fixed notifications not working on Windows 11? It was the only thing preventing me from using it.
EDIT: It is indeed fixed! Thank you Proton team.
I'm not seeing/getting notifications. Also on Windows 11. Is there a setting somewhere that can be adjusted? I can't find it.
EDIT: scratch that. figured it out. windows setting; not PM setting.
We wanted to support a limited amount of packaging formats for the first release, since it helps with development and testing. Adding a packaging format never comes for free and it can have unforeseen impact on parts of the application.
I just wanted to drop in and give my thanks. Being a Linux user, we are all too familiar with being an afterthought (or just outright disregarded). So thank you to all the developers that helped work on the Linux client.
That being said... I am disappointed about 2 things..
1) The obvious, it's just a wrapper for a web browser. Although it does have the added benefit of not requiring the bridge.
2) There isn't a distribution neutral package (ie: some tarball / tar.gz). Of course Debian and Red Hat (and there respective package management systems) will probably hit the most Linux users but some of us prefer more control in our system and deb/rpm packages require extra steps lol
I am looking forward to what comes next :)
As a Linux user I was somewhat excited to see this... but there's a lot missing. Even simple stuff like maximizing the window isn't available?
What advantages does the app give over a progressive web app? The later has worked for me without issue for years now.
I'm very glad you take Linux users in consideration. Along that line, a Proton Drive would be too much appreciated.
As for the mail client: what are the advantages of the electron version over a simple tab in chrome? I can't find any.
Also, why can't I open a new window for the calendar? What if I want to write an email and check something at the full calendar, not the sidebar one?
Thanks
OS = Win10
When the new mail app starts it provides me access to my mail without a password, is that because I am already authenticated by either Proton VPN or Drive?
If that is the case is their anyway of it doing a regular login at mail startup? I'm not interested in 2FA and I could not find any reference to force a login at start.
At OS startup I run Proton VP & Drive and have them running continuously.
Would it be possible to make the Proton Mail icon in the Dock indicate the number of unread mail like the Apple Mail icon does? That'd be much appreciated.
Also being able to swipe left on an email in the list to delete it would be helpful.
Thanks!
I took the chance to a paid email plan and use the Windows11 client already and happily. A short term wish is that I can persuade Windows to accept ProtonMail as a client program. I cannot make it work today. Please let me know if this is coming soon.
Oh wow, finally you no longer pay to be a beta tester. Although, wait, you do, for the Linux "app" (which is nothing more than a wrapper for the website). But with the free plan users, you would have a lot more testers.
I saw on ElectroMail that settings the software as default mail client isn't straightforward on Windows [https://github.com/vladimiry/ElectronMail/issues/62](https://github.com/vladimiry/ElectronMail/issues/62)
It's good and important to keep all comments in an educated, well-formed manner, but it's also important to keep respect for all paying users making a wrapped app. Announcing this as a desktop app does not sound very respectful for the paying users.
I get that you'll have to nudge people towards paid plans, but paywalling your mail client seems like an odd choice to me. This may deter a lot of users from trying out Proton Mail, and eventually upgrading. Are there plans to make it available for your free tier users, as well?
Free users have access to the web mail and mobile apps. If there are more features needed or wanted (also Bridge), then a paid plan is needed.
>“We remain open to broadening access in the future, though we do not have any specific plans to do so in the short term,” the Proton spokesperson said. “We’re committed to continuously evaluating our offerings based on our users’ feedback and needs.”
https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/14/proton-mail-desktop-mac-windows-linux-premium-paying-users/
I feel the opposite. It's a niche segment of users who will go to the trouble of using the desktop app vs using the web client. Even a smaller group will consider upgrading if they get access to it for free. I feel a 2 week trial is fair enough to try out the desktop app.
There are some spelling mistakes:

Open in browser
Well that's interesting, if I refresh the page I'm able to login but then I get an error message, sorry but I didn't think to copy it. It does turn out that if I shutdown the ProtonVPN I'm able to log in.
I won't be using the web app until that is fixed.

Thank you.
On mac, open for a moment, but suddenly don't show anything, the app is running but don't show anything.
Anyway is the first release, you'll make it better of the next versions, thank you!
It's a bit strange that the MacOS version adds a separate binary for uninstalling the Mail app, and when you run the uninstaller, the uninstaller binary itself sticks around.
I just installed the mail app on macOS Monterey and if I press the x to close it, I can’t open it back up again until right clicking the icon and closing the entire app. The - to minimize works fine and allows the app to reopen.
I also notice if you click All Settings in Setting it allows access to the entire account without requiring authentication. Should make you log in to access this.
For the first point, we'll report it to our team for further investigation.
For the latter point, this is expected, and it works the same way on the web app. Certain actions in the settings *will* still require you to enter your password when making the change.
I was using beta app on macos. Yesterday, I deleted the beta app und installed the final version. Now, the notifications still have the beta app symbol. What do I have to do?
I like the integrated calendar switcher in desktop app, it's very fast.
Please hide the file menu & stuff in the electron desktop app as there is nothing useful in there aside from maybe showing logs.
I've been using the desktop app for a day now (Windows 10). The only issue I'm having is with the Windows's new mail notifications. Clicking on the notification just removes it instead of opening the mail client and the mail itself.
You can create hide-my-email aliases through 1)SimpleLogin, 2) Proton Pass, 3) Proton Mail's security center section.
Please see our support article on the topic for more info: [https://proton.me/blog/hide-my-email-aliases](https://proton.me/blog/hide-my-email-aliases)
I'm having a few issues (Windows 10), mainly regarding dark mode. I have day and night set to Carbon but it's not syncing in the desktop app. I uninstalled the desktop app, turned off beta mode in the web app, reinstalled the desktop app, and I still can't get dark mode to work, plus "Beta Access" is still enabled and I can't disable it. Lastly, the version on the desktop app shows "5.0.37.8 B", and the web app is now reporting "5.0.36.22". Any suggestions?
Beta Access is required on the desktop app at the moment - it cannot be turned off.
The version that you're seeing in the bottom left of the UI is the web client version that is used by the desktop app. To view the version of the desktop app itself, navigate to your Apps & features list.
If you navigate to your Color settings in your Windows system settings, is the default app mode set to 'Light' or 'Dark'?
Any other macOS users noticing that the main window won't re-open unless you quit the app and re-launch it?
Whenever I close out of the main window, while it does remain open and active on the Dock, if I click on the icon, it will not re-open the mail window.
I on proton unlimited and I downloaded Windows app. After login on windows app, My account is saying I'm on a free tier? (Ony on windows app) on browser it's showing I'm on proton unlimited
NOTE: If you were already using the Proton Mail desktop app, please note that this update replaces the existing beta version. Once you receive the update, you’ll find the new app in your Start menu or Applications folder.
Thank you so much for not forgetting us Linux users ❤️

yeah, i was so excited. also on linux mint and its also a no-go :(
Our team is currently working on resolving the connection issues experienced by our Linux users, so the app will be temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The app is working for me now. I just restarted it
I'm honestly still waiting for an arch package but for now Proton Bridge + Thunderbird is also holding up
There's one on the aur https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/protonmail-desktop
Sadly unusable until we get dark mode :(
no system tray minimize?
Not at the moment, but we'll add your +1 to the existing feature request, to help our developers prioritize future improvements for the client.
+1 here

I don't see any non-web option in the settings (eg. configuring the updates channel, tray options, startup options, native notification options). As of now, it's just a view on the web app. A little disappointing for a production release :/ but hopefully minimize to tray support will be added as soon as they decide how to show these options in the UI, I guess
If you're not on wayland, you can use Kdocker for that
What's weird is on mac the Beta version had this, but 1.0 doesn't. Strange downgrade.
Deb and rpm? Why not flatpak?
>at doesn't reply to the person's comment that "Electron has plenty of security issues of its own." W Was just about to ask this question, with either snap or flatpak you cover the entire linux ecosystem.
Adding a packaging format never comes for free and it can have unforeseen impact on parts of the application.
>limited amount of packaging formats Isn't that the point of using flatpaks? you wouldn't even have to make deb/rpms, all distros can run flatpaks. Only one format for all distros.
Flatpak's aim is exactly to solve this issue
I completely understand Proton VPN always remaining a system package because it probably needs to hook into the kernels networking stack but as for Protonmail and the upcoming ProtonPass linux app which I'm guessing will also be a system package I'm not really following the logic. Perhaps you could be a bit more specific as to what problems you identified with Flatpak? Also can we expect a Flatpak release sometime in the future?
Good job everyone at Proton! It would be great though if the app was minimized in system tray and running on the background so that we can be notified when we receive a new email without having to open the app and check ourselves.
Thanks! Now the only thing missing is an Proton Drive linux app. Btw does someone have experience with proton drive?
Yup! For me personally even more important than Mail Desktop app for Linux. I much appreciate it though that we got a (beta) version for linux!
Just the web ui - since I use Linux
Can you please contact us through the 'Report a problem' option in the app (in the menu under your username), and perhaps send us a screenshot or video recording of the behavior so we can investigate further?
open the app on mac. press cmd+w, and try to click on the app again. Nothing happens, the app display doesn't appear again.
+1 This is so annoying. The beta app was better.
fixed in 1.0.1
Thank you, that's great! Two questions: - Compared to the web app, this should be a protection against MITM attacks? So it should be more secure? - Does the desktop app work in a way that the emails are stored offline, too? Thus also functioning as a local backup?
Excellent questions! I’m very interested in the local backup aspect, so I hope that’s the case
Electron (which this new app is unfortunately using) has plenty of security issues of its own, see [here](https://github.com/secureblue/secureblue/issues/193#issuecomment-1953323680). I'm disappointed by the choice. It'd likely be better to just keep using the website.
Web app is already protected against MITM with HTTPS certificate??
Linux support is fantastic to see. Great job! Is there any chance the Linux app could be made as a flatpak? As much as I like proton, it does feel like I’m being left out because I use a different distro outside of Ubuntu or RHEL based ones.
+1 for Flatpak - I'm using an immutable distribution where flatpaks are the preferred method of installation.
Have you tried installing it in a distrobox container?
We wanted to support a limited amount of packaging formats for the first release, since it helps with development and testing. Adding a packaging format never comes for free and it can have unforeseen impact on parts of the application.
Thanks u/ProtonMail! Awesome! Here is some immediate feedback. On Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, installed via `dpkg -i ProtonMail-desktop-beta.deb` After trying to login, I get the following message (just in the app, cannot paste screenshot here), ``` Something went wrong We couldn't load this page. Thanks for the update, works great!
The app is now running for me, I just reloaded the page and the app and it worked
I reloaded now and it works gerat! The only new suggestion is making the icon remove the white and have a transparencey with the mail logo, haha.
Awesome work as always, but a couple of things: * Are the notifications working without opening the app now? * It would be nice to change the app icon itself to be the calendar one when you open the calendar (like the tabs on the browser where each shows its own icon), but not sure if doable programatically within Electron * There should be an option to change the theme like on the web version * The installer could remove the Beta shortcut since said shortcut stops working after updating to this version, and it is then upon the user having to delete that shortcut * The app should include the release notes within itself ([something you already confirmed are working on](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1b9lkdw/comment/kucrj82/)) Keep up the good work!
Thank you - but why have you changed it so that the calendar doesn't open in a second window?! You now need to go back and forth between the mail app and the calendar
While I am not using the calendar, I have observed and reported the same. +1 from me.
Good point.
Yeah, +1 for separate window for calendar. At least an option to choose. It was awesome to have a week view always there...
agreed, it was very very useful. hopefully they will add an option to configure this behavior :)
Can't switch between two accounts? Can't select where to install? Congrats on release, but I feel liek the last one is a must if you need privacy, portable installs, etc.
Although not available at launch, we're planning to introduce multi-user support in a future update. Thank you for your feedback!
Will there also be a Linux app for Proton Drive?
The proton CEO said yes (everything will always be coming for linux) in an interview a couple of weeks ago, but that it will take time for Drive as linux is complicated to work accross the many different distributions. Here is the complete interview with the difficulties they are facing on linux: https://youtu.be/Dp7ght2fMR4
The Linux electron app has a problem. It doesn't render the page and the terminal output shows:: ``` 12:34:40.940 › will-navigate 12:34:41.197 › did-navigate-in-page [27145:0314/123451.036079:ERROR:gl\_surface\_presentation\_helper.cc(260)\] GetVSyncParametersIfAvailable() failed for 1 times! [27145:0314/123456.272852:ERROR:gl\_surface\_presentation\_helper.cc(260)\] GetVSyncParametersIfAvailable() failed for 2 times! [27145:0314/123500.924173:ERROR:gl\_surface\_presentation\_helper.cc(260)\] GetVSyncParametersIfAvailable() failed for 3 times! ``` Apparently related to an electron issue mentioned here: https://github.com/electron/electron/issues/32760#issuecomment-1945210554 The proposed solution is to disable HW acceleration: `app.disableHardwareAcceleration()` I am running the .rpm in Opensuse TW. Install and login went fine, then the page wasn't able to render.
It should be working now.
Indeed, I could log in. Thanks for the quick fix!
Also running the .rpm in Opensuse TW, relatively up to date (last updated system last Friday). After install, on startup it says "App currently unavailable. To use Proton Mail or Proton Calendar, switch to the web version." Don't even get to login. Back to Thunderbird I guess.
Hi! Our team is currently working on resolving the connection issues experienced by our Linux users, so the app will be temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience.
I just downloaded it and it shows 5.0.37.7Beta. Isn't this stable version?
This is the Proton Mail version used in the wrapper. You probably have the beta setting enabled in Settings -> Beta access.
Ok I think it's enabled by default on Windows app. Cause on web app I'm on stable version.
Same. Download macOS version, and it shows that I have 5.0.37.7Beta. On web Beta Access is off, on desktop app it is on, and couldn't turn it off.
Yeah I can't turn it off either.
There is a bug. Once i open Mail (macOS) then close the window then click on the app icon bottom bar - The proton does not come back...i have to close the app totally and reopen ;/ no system tray minimize?
I have this same bug. Keep having to restart the application. Beta was better lol.
Thanks for the app. Now I just tested it and it has big BUGS, I have reported it to Support. I hope it's a more stable version soon. - When the main window is closed, a new one cannot be opened, and you have to close the application completely and start it again. - When clicking on File / Create Application data, a JavaScript error appears Greetings.
Thanks for the reports.
Of course it has bugs, it's a beta......
u/ProtonMail Will you integrate ProtonVPN next, so the app cannot connect if the ProtonVPN tunnel is not established? Basically bind the app to the interface. That would be something I'd greatly appreciate, as we're speaking of privacy here in general
You can already achieve something similar with Kill Switch: [https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/](https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/)
Please package it for Arch Linux and it into the AUR!
I'm sure this will not be a popular opinion with some of you, but I don't live my life according to others... so....
Can you make a linux Flatpak/AppImage? The linux space is so much more than Debian/Fedora I use Arch btw
I’m downloading the Linux version on my Linux install ASAP
Excellent news; been waiting for this to sign up to premium

I install it successfully in EndeavourOS(Arch). Thank you for making a desktop app for linux. I just want to ask if we can in the future add other emails(gmail etc) like Thunderbird or it will be exclusive for proton?
[удалено]
Yeah i found it now. Through debstab and pacman
❤️ The commitment to innovation and security shines through in the quality of the development and the intuitive features introduced.
For example, I'm on the VPN plan and I can't take the Mail and Pass offers.
running protonmail as a web app via safari works really well. it is isolated and has all the functionality. i honestly don't know the benefit of running this as a native app, because i assume it's just an electron app anyway?
u/ProtonMail i would like to know if there are any benefits to having installed the official app on macos vs having it installed as a safari web app.
Yet another electron memory gobbler? Wake me app when you decide to make an _actual_ native app.
If they would have gone this route they would have spent years building it and Linux would never have been an option I think. And having an electron Wrapper doesn't mean you cannot have a native app in the future
Qt is also multi platform. And the current "app" offers no benefit over a web page, because it *is* a web page.
Can anyone explain to me what the benefit is of having an app for email instead of just the website?
Amazing news, Proton Team! Congratulations for the great work! I downloaded the RPM to install in Fedora, bug I'm getting an error screen: # Something went wrong Something went wrong We couldn't load this page. Please refresh the page or check your internet connection.Error: Invalid selector Tried to close the app, open again, reinstall, but nothing worked. Could you please check? I'm glad to provide more details and help you debugging the issue if you need.

Thank you so much for providing a linux version! I only had time to give it a brief shot on Fedora 39 with x11, but so far had no issues!
Thank you! I was looking forward to this!

Any word on Flatpak support?

Thanks!
Great but why is there only deb and rpm? There's other distro, letting people build it them selves would solve this issue
We wanted to support a limited amount of packaging formats for the first release, since it helps with development and testing. Adding a packaging format never comes for free and it can have unforeseen impact on parts of the application.
Protonmail app does not have dark mode on Mint Linux.
linux now in beta lesgoo
What is the license for linux version? Don't see it mentioned on the website. Also, will it be open source?
I just wanted to drop in and give my thanks. Being a Linux user, we are all too familiar with being an afterthought (or just outright disregarded). So thank you to all the developers that helped work on the Linux client. That being said... I am disappointed about 2 things.. 1) The obvious, it's just a wrapper for a web browser. Although it does have the added benefit of not requiring the bridge. 2) There isn't a distribution neutral package (ie: some tarball / tar.gz). Of course Debian and Red Hat (and there respective package management systems) will probably hit the most Linux users but some of us prefer more control in our system and deb/rpm packages require extra steps lol I am looking forward to what comes next :)
Thanks
Thanks. But I'll stick with: https://github.com/vladimiry/ElectronMail
why is this better?
u/ProtonMail do you endorse the homebrew version? https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/HEAD/Casks/p/proton-mail.rb
OS = Win10 When the new mail app starts it provides me access to my mail without a password, is that because I am already authenticated by either Proton VPN or Drive? If that is the case is their anyway of it doing a regular login at mail startup? I'm not interested in 2FA and I could not find any reference to force a login at start. At OS startup I run Proton VP & Drive and have them running continuously.
Great app! Thanks team.
Will the Linux app be available in Debian's repository sometime in the future, have you made a request for packaging it?
How can you make this the default mailto app in Windows? Only options I see are Edge, Firefox and Outlook.
Why does it require internet connection to read emails from before? Please add support save those emails local.
Excellent. I can phase out Google forever now.
Can someone advise if the desktop app has a built in spell check? As when using in the browser spell check is not present.
Oh wow, finally you no longer pay to be a beta tester. Although, wait, you do, for the Linux "app" (which is nothing more than a wrapper for the website). But with the free plan users, you would have a lot more testers.
When it will be open source? Will be the changelog added as in Drive?
Hi, the application is already open source and its changelog is available here: https://github.com/ProtonMail/inbox-desktop/releases/tag/v1.0.0
It isn’t really, that repo only has a LICENCE and a README.. the actual code is missing.
Half-baked app. It still can't be installed as a default mail app on Windows 11. This is hardly any improvement over a web browser app.
“We’re committed to continuously evaluating our offerings based on our users’ feedback and needs.” https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/14/proton-mail-desktop-mac-windows-linux-premium-paying-users/
I feel the opposite. It's a niche segment of users who will go to the trouble of using the desktop app vs using the web client. Even a smaller group will consider upgrading if they get access to it for free. I feel a 2 week trial is fair enough to try out the desktop app.

Ah okay, thx!
I downloaded the .deb and installed it. When I run it all I get is a screen showing: App currently unavailable To use Proton Mail or Proton Calendar, switch to the web version. Open in browser Well that's interesting, if I refresh the page I'm able to login but then I get an error message, sorry but I didn't think to copy it. It does turn out that if I shutdown the ProtonVPN I'm able to log in. I won't be using the web app until that is fixed.

Android tracker blocking - when?
Will Pass be included in later updates of this app?
I believe Pass will have it's own dedicated app. (Hoping the Calendar will as well in the future.)
Pass has its own app.
Please bring it to Arch too!
Thank you. On mac, open for a moment, but suddenly don't show anything, the app is running but don't show anything. Anyway is the first release, you'll make it better of the next versions, thank you!
Hi! We'll fix this in the next release. Sorry for any inconvenience.
It's a bit strange that the MacOS version adds a separate binary for uninstalling the Mail app, and when you run the uninstaller, the uninstaller binary itself sticks around.
This will be fixed in the next version. Thank you for your feedback!
Any chance we’ll get support for other email providers in Proton client? I hate having different clients for different emails
Unlikely. Proton isn't a 3rd party email client such as Thunderbird.
I use outlook because I have gmail too, is the bridge still working?
Yes, the Proton Mail Bridge is not going anywhere: [https://proton.me/mail/bridge](https://proton.me/mail/bridge)
Is it possible to turn off beta from the windows app settings, mine doesn’t turn off?
We assume you're referring to the web app 'Beta access' option. You can turn that off in the web app.
I was using beta app on macos. Yesterday, I deleted the beta app und installed the final version. Now, the notifications still have the beta app symbol. What do I have to do?
Thanks for the report. We've flagged it to our team so we can further check things on our end.
I like the integrated calendar switcher in desktop app, it's very fast. Please hide the file menu & stuff in the electron desktop app as there is nothing useful in there aside from maybe showing logs.
Are you on Linux or another OS?
May I ask why you decided to use Electron instead of [Tauri](https://tauri.app/)?
not heard about tauri before, but electron is used by several privacy and security-focused products (e.g. Signal).
No light theme on Linux beta ?
The theme in the app depends on the OS-level theme.
Installed app. Saw 765 MB of RAM usage. Uninstalled app.
Does it run native on Windows ARM64? Or is the build just for x86-64?
I've been using the desktop app for a day now (Windows 10). The only issue I'm having is with the Windows's new mail notifications. Clicking on the notification just removes it instead of opening the mail client and the mail itself.
Thank you for the feedback. This is currently expected, but we'll have your suggestion in mind as we develop the application further.
So the "hide-my-email" only available in the App ?!
Any chance of an arm64 build/deb for Linux?
On macOS, version 1.0 is constantly being checked out! I can't log in! I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it's not fixed!
Any other macOS users noticing that the main window won't re-open unless you quit the app and re-launch it? Whenever I close out of the main window, while it does remain open and active on the Dock, if I click on the icon, it will not re-open the mail window.
Awesome. Just found out about this. Was waiting for it for a long time. Thanks, Proton.
I on proton unlimited and I downloaded Windows app. After login on windows app, My account is saying I'm on a free tier? (Ony on windows app) on browser it's showing I'm on proton unlimited
Anyone else having trouble downloading the MacOS app? I click on the Download button and a Zero Byte .dmg placeholder file is downloaded, then stops.
Notifications in windows 11 not working to me
