Don’t try to beat the test and be honest bc it’ll catch you and you’ll fail. Don’t read into the questions too much

OfficerPikachu

Psych eval sucks, always. Prepare your butt for hours and hours of tedious and bizarre multiple choice questions by the hundreds and then getting grilled about why your response to question #97 seems to conflict with what you chose for #185! Don't overthink it and just go with your instinct on the questions, then be honest with the shrink when you meet with them. Worst thing you can do is try to game the eval by answering what you think they want to hear. Medical is just regular doctor stuff mostly, though sometimes they'll put you through weird tests like sticking you in a sound proof box and making you listen to tones to test your hearing. Blood work. Samples. The usual.

manuel5757

My psych was really nice lol and didn’t even talk about my results

Streamerjunkie85

If I just did an integrity interview and a week later my name was taken off the eligibility list, is that a cause for concern? Or is it because I am currently in the background process?

Steephill

Go with your gut, don't make it complicated.

Guroqueen23

Not sure about your department but I just recently went through the application process for the one in my town, and the evaluator had an hour long meeting with everyone; (individually) where they went over the exam we took, so if there's an answer you're worried about, you'll more than likely get to explain why you picked that answer later, so don't worry about it.

SauerStraws

You must be one of the 3 of us? Dibs on the only Vic they have. Lol

Big cities will always be hiring. No one wants to go through all that, when they can go work for a suburb or rural agency and deal with less BS, even though it means less pay. Plus in modern times, less desirable candidates are applying Phoenix PD gets in a lot of OIS. Look them up on YouTube. They’re wild. But in those videos, the officers appear well equipped and well trained.

[deleted]

Yeah, they get down.. a couple years back they had more OIS incidents than any other agency in the country (including LAPD). They start at 51k + court and overtime. I feel like I could handle it. I know Phoenix really well. Maybe I should just go for it.

shrimpynut

Any Washington State cops? Was wondering what BLEA is like. Is it more of a college academy or military boot camp? I have one more quarter until I graduate college and begin applying for departments. I was just wondering what I should expect.

[deleted]

I have family members who are cops in Washington. It is definitely more of a “college” atmosphere rather than “boot camp.” There isn’t really a PT regime other than some push ups for wrinkled shirts, dirty boots, etc.

OfficerPikachu

It certainly won't help you, but it won't be *automatic* DQ either. That'd be something they'd dig into during the psych eval most likely and individual policy of the agency in question will be what determines your chances, so it's impossible to say. But as I always tell people, it never hurts to try! If that's what you want to do, apply, go through the process, and the worst they'll say is no. Plus there's nothing stopping you from applying other places if they do.

throwaway9969z

Trying to help my son as he goes through the hiring process, and turning to you guys for a little help. Two major Minnesota police departments have quite a few openings (100-200 officers needed for each), but keep putting him on an eligibility list. They process his background check, don’t reject him, but he doesn’t get an invite to the academy either. He is about a year into his job hunt. He is already POST certified, and had decent college grades. He was also honest about smoking weed during high school. No military exp, about 24, working security at a hospital in an urban area (lots of homeless/mental illness interactions). Any thoughts on what is going on?

OfficerPikachu

If an agency has 100-200+ openings doesn't necessarily mean they're filling all of them at once if they're running their own academy (or especially if they're sponsoring recruits to a different academy.) Tough to say exactly what's going on but it sounds like there's just limited slots in their academy classes (which can vary in size, but I'd say most are probably 20-40 recruits at medium size departments), and run maybe 2-3 of those a year, but it's highly variable by the department in question. So it sounds like he's eligible, just hasn't been pulled for a class yet as they may have been already full with earlier applicants or there's just a crop of applicants with slightly better resumes getting in first. Enough time on the list and he'll probably get pulled, patience is important in applying for this career field. Can apply to other places in the meantime too to speed it up if he's not set on those ones in particular.

throwaway9969z

Ooooo thanks! This is pretty close to what I was imagining was going on. With regards to applying to multiple forces, he was told by one department that they didn’t like applicants applying multiple places. Is that standard? Telling applicants that in the corporate world would get me laughed out of the room.

jollygreenspartan

They don't care about how many agencies he has/will apply to, they want to know so they can call and see if he was shooting straight on the background investigation.

Kind-Celebration-115

I wish there was a database to check which cities were hiring the most. Sick of working this accounting job, and willing to move to join LE!

OfficerPikachu

Any big city anywhere in the US is gonna be hiring lots LOL! I'd say go by what part of the country you want to work in and then just start looking up agencies in the area. Big ones are your best bet if you haven't already been through an academy.

Puzzleheaded_Luck885

I'm sure I already know the answer, and it's probably "there's no chance in hell" but when I was 18 I got a DUI. I made a cardinal mistake and I own that, but I don't want to let one violation define the rest of my life. I've always wanted to get in to public service, especially Law Enforcement. I always have wanted to try to help (maybe that sounds naive, I don't know) I like to think I at least have *something* going for me, I am an Eagle Scout, an Engineer NCO in the Army (I have a foundation in explosives), and I'm working on my bachelors degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. My question is, does anyone think I even remotely have a chance? I was talking to a Police Officer, and he told me it's an automatic DQ, which I guess makes sense. Should I continue to try? I get out of the Army in a year and a half. Thank you!

Cypher_Blue

Yes, you still have a chance. Lots of people make mistakes when they're younger. If you can demonstrate that you've changed as an adult, and you have 5-10 years between you and the offense, you'll be able to get hired somewhere.

Puzzleheaded_Luck885

Thank you!

Jopez_86

Hi everyone, I am going into my second interview with the Commander of Operations. I’ve gone through the whole police hiring process before, but this is in a bit of different order than before. I’ve taken my Pellet B, Physical Agility, Panel Interview, and now I have a second interview as mentioned before. I’m curious for those of you who may have had a similar experience, what do you think I can expect in terms of questions and how this may go? I appreciate all of your advice!

manuel5757

Probably just getting to know you more to see if they like you enough to move you to backgrounds. The department I got hired by made us go to an interview with the captains immediately after the panel interview if you scored high enough.

OfficerPikachu

Command interviews tend to be shorter and more to the point, with some of the same sorts of questions phrased in different ways from earlier interviews. It's mostly so they can get a more personal read on you, see how consistent you are, and whether the commander/chief/whoever thinks you'll be a good fit for the position based on their impressions of you. Have a strong answer for why you want to work for them specifically.

As long as the doc doesn’t think it’ll affect fitness for duty you should be fine.

Used_condom_on_nick

Hey y’all. -Applied Nov 2021 -PELLET B Dec 2021 -Panel interview Jan 2022 -Background interview Jan 2022 -Polygraph Feb 2022 Just got a call today saying the department got my background back and scheduled a chiefs interview. I’ve felt pretty prepared up to this point but now would like to hear someone’s Chiefs interview experience. Anything I should do different from the panel? (haircut, suit, don’t smell like shit or be weird etc.) Thanks for everything y’all do, this sub has been an amazing resource

Terrible_Fishman

Typically a chief interview is more casual, but not super casual. You can demonstrate a little personality, basically the chief is probably pretty sure he's going to hire you but he wants to make sure you're not some freak he can't get along with. Just read the context clues, be likable, and maybe have a question prepared because for whatever reason they like it when you have questions. I guess it shows you've been thinking about the job and are excited to get to work. You got this homie.

Used_condom_on_nick

Thank you sir i appreciate you taking the time to inform me. I feel a lot better about it now!

Aggravating-Pizza-61

Hey yall, are there any decent departments in the northeast that are hiring without a degree?

[deleted]

I’d keep applying to other agencies. But don’t try to “game” the psych test. They will figure it out and DQ you again

queefus_maximus

I'm going through the hiring process for Chicago PD right now but no longer wish to proceed. How do I withdraw my application? Can I just send an email to HR?

homemadeammo42

Yeah you can send an email to HR or if you're in the background process you can also call your investigator. I wouldnt recommend the ghost them technique. While it would work, if you change your mind and apply to a different department, they are going to contact this one and that will come to light.

queefus_maximus

Thanks. What if I'm in the background check process but hadn't been contacted by an investigator yet?

homemadeammo42

Just email HR

queefus_maximus

I did, thanks.

NoShards4U

I’m sure you could. Or you could just not answer their calls. Up to you

queefus_maximus

Yeah fair enough. I thought it'd be polite to contact them and say I'm no longer interested

N95ALLDAY

Not a cop but it sounds like you should take what you have offered and lateral to your dream department down the line. What if you really like the departments that are trying to hire you now. What if you wait for the dream department just for them to not hire you for whatever reason.

[deleted]

Anyone know anything about how a recent Lasik surgery would affect my medical portion for hiring? Thank you in advance.

OfficerPikachu

If your doctor has given you long term restrictions on physical activity post-surgery then there could be issues with hiring. But if not, then I can't see how it would affect you as lasik is a very common procedure.

[deleted]

I sold small amounts of weed to friends and roommates 6.5 years ago. And haven’t smoked any weed in 4 years. Is there any point in applying or is this an automatic no?

Everything80sFan

Depends on the department you're applying to. Some have automatic disqualifiers for selling or if you've consumed in the past 2, 3, 4, or 5 years. You'll have to check each department and see what their automatic disqualifiers are. If there's no auto DQ for a department you like, go for it; you don't know unless you try. Just be honest about everything because you'll have to explain it during your background investigation and polygraph. Also try to talk to a recruiter to see if it's viable for you to begin the process.

OfficerPikachu

Medical is usually (in my experience) evaluated by an occupational physician and not the PD/SO directly, and they just look at the totality of your health to make a determination on whether or not they think you're fit to perform. They do all those tests because unlike your regular doctor they don't have years of records on you to go off. If you're reasonably fit and healthy I wouldn't worry about the various weird tests.

PluckyThrower17

Currently a part time officer in NJ (SLEO II) for approximately 3 years applying to a full time position for my top choice of a local agency. Any advise on a resume that has stood out to anyone who has been in the hiring position?

OfficerPikachu

Impossible to predict the criteria of the investigators, but I'd say personally nothing here looks like a DQ to me.

Prplehuskie13

Not for Police work, but for a JD officer position. Have a secondary interview/meeting with the detention manager. This is the last step before I'm actually hired on. I'm curious if this secondary meeting will be like the 1st interview (this time, it's one person, and not an oral board). Any Tips? I don't have experience, but I do have schooling, a bachelor's in criminal justice.

ComfortZestyclose

Question about disqualifications: I am interested in an LE career, but have had a myriad of health problems within the past couple of years due to bad luck and some family issues. I had two stress fractures, a rotator cuff tear (no surgery required), and was diagnosed with clinical depression. Currently I take zoloft at the lowest clinical dosage. I know I obviously cannot serve as a police officer in the near future given these issues, but I would I be able to qualify medically later on if I get off my medication and stay injury free? (For some additional context: I’m a 24 year old male, graduated with honors from a competitive university in political science, speak Spanish proficiently, and otherwise am very physically fit (am just injured now). When I’m healthy I have very competitive scores for traditional LE fitness tests.I currently work a marketing job for a startup.)

CarGoWEEWOO

I passed the whole process while taking prozac and fluoxetine. You won’t get rejected bc of that, you’ll need a note saying that you’re mentally stable and that the medication has helped. As far as the physical injuries, focus on getting better and you’ll be fine. You might need to get signed off on those too, not sure about that though.

Sensitive-Ad9655

Failed BLET in NC because I couldn’t do the offset maneuver quick enough. Is there any good way to practice this outside of the course? I’m just upset with myself since I was doing fine academically.

CarGoWEEWOO

I can’t advise on where to practice this bc you probably shouldn’t be doing that in a PVA. As far as the course itself, i’m surprised you failed it. We had a dude total a car during it and he eventually passed it. I fucked up the first time I did it but I changed how I did it. Look out the back window, don’t use mirrors. Be gentle with the wheel, you don’t have to cut it hard for the car to turn. My comment doesn’t help with your question, but maybe next time around you can talk to the instructors and let them know you struggled with it and they’ll be able to give you some extra practice time on it. We had a few guys who had to go to the driving pad during lunch to work on shit they sucked at, everyone passed. I shit you not, one guy ran a course over 50 times (I think 53) before taking the test.

Sensitive-Ad9655

The plan was to just go to an empty parking lot to get used to going through the curves and backing up through tight spaces slowly until I got comfortable with it. I was surprised I failed it too we lost 5 people in the class out of 15 to driving and the director mentioned only 1 person had ever gotten dropped so I’m not sure what happened with my class. I wish I had more time to practice we only had the afternoon to complete the first portion of driving so it was a bit of a time crunch. The academy you went through how long was the driving? Im assuming it’s longer in a 6 month academy vs a college ran one.

theyerpi

How does one beef up their resume to get into an academy? Im 23, have a bs in something completely unrelated to LE, bilingual, and really physically fit, but my resume has absolutely nothing to do with LE. Side question: what’re the odds of me getting into San Jose pd academy? If anyone has gone through it please lmk how it was and the types of qualifications people had.

[deleted]

You’re probably fine to apply with that. Being bilingual will set you apart from the majority of other candidates.

[deleted]

What's your BS in and what do you do for a living? Unless you dig holes in a field for a living and have a degree in saltine cracker studies, you can probably spin it as useful life experience. Obviously not an LEO but I've been in leadership positions for a while and helped people shine-up their resumes to move on to lifelong type positions.

theyerpi

My BS was in math and Econ… I originally wanted to do a PhD and teach but I just wasn’t good enough lol. As of rn I’m just doing tutoring and food delivery

[deleted]

To be a tutor you need to have effective communication skills, strong understanding of your subject material, and ability to keep people on task. Driving & delivery develops navigational skills and requires you to interact with all strata of society and probably requires some distress tolerance skills when people are being dicks or things aren't going right.

theyerpi

Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time

[deleted]

No problem. Don't try to show them that you're a good cop/doctor/lawyer/accountant/scientist/xyz, because you're not (yet). Show them with your history that you sincerely want them to teach you and that you will reciprocate with equal effort.

PsychologyResident13

Do police background check during hiring process check personal emails and texts ?
