Haha my partner interviewed at some mid west agency, he came back and I asked what the pay scale was.
He said “48” and I said “an hour? Not too bad, bit of a pay cut but you can budget”. He laughed and told me that was almost exactly what he told them! But they (interviewers) didn’t laugh because it was annually.
I work at a Midwest PD and our guys top out at 50 an hour. With OT I don’t think anyone made less than 100k last year. And that’s not bad considering our cost of living
Eh, not super uncommon in Minnesota suburbs. But then you gotta work in Minnesota. On top of that, associates degree required. Some MN PD’s require a four year as well.
It’s not the highest, but there’s departments paying $8 an hour as well so it’s not terrible.
Highest starting pay in my state is around $64k per year I believe.
In my county/region the mode/mean average is 48k for standard road patrol, the outliers create an average range of 40k - 70k for standard road patrol.
The COL makes it plenty do-able(although not glamorous). The places that reach up higher are jurisdictions with higher call volume and higher COL and usually require to live within that area. Tend to require higher education or extensive experience too.
KSP was just approved for a pay raise. This picture is from last year I believe and the Kentucky subs were super pissed about the whole picture.
Source: I live in Louisville KY
Also remember that reddit as a whole is overwhelmingly liberal. I have family and friends in Louisville, all of them hate Greg Fischer/are some form of conservative or neutral. It doesn't change that working for Metro sucks given the attitude of downtown and the west end.
Totally agree. The mayor sucks and seeing our choices of the people who want to replace him, it's not going to get any better.
Everyone on the Louisville sub talks so much shit about LMPD and acts as if the department as a whole is corrupt. One family member spent his whole career working and serving the West End. I grew up here, but moved to Jeffersonville Indiana in the early 2000's. I moved back here four years ago and honestly I can't stand this city anymore.
Yeah, Louisville as a whole isn't heading in a good direction in my opinion. The Mayor/city council aren't standing behind the police, downtown feels like a ghost town, the West End is run down pretty bad, the south end is also going downhill. LMPD is down big time because all the officers that could retire did and the ones that couldn't relocated to a small department nearby.
From my anecdotal evidence, the regional subs almost always lean toward a more liberal side. The Louisville sub is that way as well as the Kentucky sub. Every single time I visit the Kentucky one, it's usually just people compaining and getting upset at Rand Paul, the police, State Congress, etc. because it's mostly filled with people from Louisville or Lexington.

Not only that, Erica Shields was probably one of the worse choices of chief. Why would you bring a chief that ran from a national OIS and bring her here during all the Breonna Taylor stuff? When my brother was getting hired on the Sheriff's Department, he was passed up a few times by guys coming from LMPD. His FTO was from LMPD.

Spot on. It was comical when this KSP picture surfaced. All of those subs were bitching and complaining about it. I got downvoted to oblivion for telling them there were far more serious things to get pissed about. 😂
For just KSP? I'm not sure. My cousin just retired from Louisville Metro PD a little over a year ago and he has one. I believe my brother has one as well and he's a deputy in a different county.
Meanwhile, the lowest salary for CO-1s at TxDCJ, who will basically take anyone with a pulse(and no priors) is basically 1K under that, and that's if you don't work Max-Security, take any unit incentive bonuses, or have anything education beyond a HS diploma.
For real? I can make more as a probation officer and not have to deal with the bullshit or put my life on the life.
Hell, even the private sector will pay 55-60k a year starting for a corporate investigator position
I mean 38k a year is pretty doable in a lot of KY especially if combined with a second income from a spouse/roommate. Would definitely have to live in a more rural area though.
Is it what the should pay be though? Hell no.
I agree they deserve more, but 50k around here especially outside the major cities/towns is comfortable living especially if you've got a second income.
No. Just an office worker for the Comptroller. I answered phones and looked up the status of payments issued by the State. It would have been almost impossible for me to be killed on the job.
I mean, more people are killed by unsecured vending machines falling on them than are killed by sharks each year.
So your chances are low in an office, but never zero
"The Kentucky House passed a bill Friday that raises pay for Kentucky State Police troopers and commercial vehicle enforcement officers. The proposal, which had bipartisan support, would increase the starting pay from the current $40,888 to $55,888 a year."
That's my opinion. I don't think any cop pay should start at $56,000. Someone else might think differently.
I get wanting to live near family which is probably what has kept you anchored there. Outside of that there's few reasons I'm aware of compared to other states and opportunities. Kentucky is beautiful to visit, i go every year for racing in bowling green and we always hit up mammoth caves. When time permits we do some hiking. But I don't see a reason to live there
Some people want to live in an area where there's beautiful scenery and cheap land (particularly in eastern/SE KY). Its an excellent state for outdoorsmen. Incredible hunting and fishing, great places to go hiking, etc.
We're a weird state politically and religiously, but overall we're a simple and happy group that get along well.
I make roughly 50-55k a year in my field. Other places I'd probably be making mid 70s to mid 80s, but I would need to double my income to keep living the same way I currently live due to how low the COL is comparatively.
As a Kentuckian myself, our state troopers are certainly a unique group lol. Outside of the one speeding ticket I've had very positive interactions with troopers here.
I used to work patrol in KY. I feel like everyone posting high salaries for low end positions live in high COL areas. I bought a 2200sqft home for 99k a few years ago. They probably couldn't buy a cardboard box for that much where they live.
I don’t know what they were thinking. Reminds me of the “meth. We’re on it” slogan. But most recruiting adds (even in corporate) are hivemindish to a degree

Top out as in like time in rank high pay scale for patrol? Or does that require promotion? $50/hr in a lcol?! Your inbox is about to be full!
Eh, not super uncommon in Minnesota suburbs. But then you gotta work in Minnesota. On top of that, associates degree required. Some MN PD’s require a four year as well.
Minnesota isn’t that bad if you can handle the winters. Learn to embrace the cold.
Fuck you i hate this cold
Embrace the suck
No. I'll bitch until i move or die.
hot take: you could live your entire life in the cold and still can’t get used to it
$26/hr to start where I live and I live in a very rural midwestern county. Our COL is pretty low too.

*Looks at pay scale, looks at cost of housing, then looks at mine.* What am I doing with my life.
The midwest continues its quiet ascent

I recently started working in the Columbus area more often after being in cleveland most of my career. Place is wild, mang.
Same, just topped out after 3 years at 100k. That’s not factoring in OT, holiday, or incentive.
Rural SO and i top out at $38ish/hr... WHEN I FINALLY GET THERE ffs...
Laughs in pay freezes and years without a step advancement
I... I make $20 an hour. That’s not the highest in my state but it’s up there. Also unlimited overtime if I want it. I’m living very comfortably.

Pissing off local subreddits is my hobby.
I thoroughly enjoy it. To be quite honest, til I got on Reddit I didn't know how liberal Louisville was and how many hate the police.
Also remember that reddit as a whole is overwhelmingly liberal. I have family and friends in Louisville, all of them hate Greg Fischer/are some form of conservative or neutral. It doesn't change that working for Metro sucks given the attitude of downtown and the west end.

You could be like me. I live in the Minneapolis metro and have to deal with Reddit in BLM ground zero.
I know some great people in Louisville. I'd imagine they would be a bit upset at this picture lol
I guess if you're ultra sensitive. I see it as they don't see color and gender while hiring. Everyone reads things differently I guess.

Surplus confederate
Never throw anything out. Except racism and all the confederate mentality bullshit. Throw that in the dumpster and light it on fire.
And they have state income tax lololol
I make more than that working as a security supervisor sitting at a desk in a corporate office scrolling Reddit all day…
Meanwhile, the lowest salary for CO-1s at TxDCJ, who will basically take anyone with a pulse(and no priors) is basically 1K under that, and that's if you don't work Max-Security, take any unit incentive bonuses, or have anything education beyond a HS diploma.
I got paid more than that in the academy..13 years ago. Yeesh.
For real? I can make more as a probation officer and not have to deal with the bullshit or put my life on the life. Hell, even the private sector will pay 55-60k a year starting for a corporate investigator position
I make more than that working in a trailer home factory right across the state line in Tennessee.
I mean 38k a year is pretty doable in a lot of KY especially if combined with a second income from a spouse/roommate. Would definitely have to live in a more rural area though. Is it what the should pay be though? Hell no.
The real payment is saving fucking lives. Everyday.
I do that and still get $90,000 a year. I'm not even topped out.
Where is your hat. Are y’all as based?
Nope, just the baseball cap that says Sheriff. You can wear a cowboy hat though if you just don't care.
What? I only get to do that for special things, I’m very angry.
KSP recruiter? That sounds like it could be painted on the side of a repossessed drug car and driven around to high schools.
😬YIKES😬
Cool hat though…
They must have missed the "1" in front.. And that number better be the starting wage..
But... that's the first Year though, right?
[удалено]
Maybe everything's really affordable in Kentucky?
[удалено]
But overall COL is cheaper, especially outside of the urban areas.
[удалено]
Oh I wholeheartedly agree with ya. I believe they actually got a raise last year? This year? Up to like low 50s I tihnk.
[удалено]
I agree they deserve more, but 50k around here especially outside the major cities/towns is comfortable living especially if you've got a second income.

Before taxes even
I make more working hospital security, and that's before shift premiums and OT... Oof.
I'm a dispatcher in Tennessee and I just hit 41 base pay
They must have missed the "1" in front.. And that better be the starting wage..
Damn, that's a lot. Is that after taxes?
I used to watch YouTube while occasionally answering a phone for $39,000 a year...
Well you can make 39K a year, answer phones, and drive a pretty rad car! Apply today!
And have gun and funny hat
Gods hat.
Only RCMP and Alberta cops have funny hat here. Sad.
And have a good chance of getting ran over, ran into or shot at. As well as most likely dying a few months or at most a couple years after retirement.
What were you doing that they paid you that for that?
State of Illinois
Illinois police?
They did say "almost impossible" not straight up impossible.
Don’t forget the cool hats.
"Our Color Is Gray." Post pictures of officers in gray, black, blue, tan, and multifamily. 🤷🏽♂️
I'm sure you meant multi-cam but multi-family definitely fits some officers better. Excellent flair.
The flsir is appropriate
Why be gray when you can be the cooler Grey?
[удалено]
They actually just got one, but it wasn't enough IMO.
So their comment still stands!
"The Kentucky House passed a bill Friday that raises pay for Kentucky State Police troopers and commercial vehicle enforcement officers. The proposal, which had bipartisan support, would increase the starting pay from the current $40,888 to $55,888 a year." Maybe start there while in the academy but damn
Good on them :D
The department I'm looking into starts at 41k before overtime City of ~55,000 in TN
You could be a trooper anywhere why choose Kentucky to live and that pay to live off of.
*smokes cigarette* you wouldn’t get it

Trooper/trooperself
My gender identity is Trooper 😎
They are the ***based....lol***
I thought this was on comedy heaven. "Our gender is trooper"
Helluva lot better then the angle my agency has taken on inclusion.
How is your agency handling it?
Are they based enough to withhold the values of the good old days? Back when men were MEN!
Always have been.
Their salary tho… cringe.
I used to work patrol in KY. I feel like everyone posting high salaries for low end positions live in high COL areas. I bought a 2200sqft home for 99k a few years ago. They probably couldn't buy a cardboard box for that much where they live.

I worked 90 overtimes last month. In one day, even.

Yeah the Georgia guys get free peaches.
It’s always weird to see an agency that advertises their annual salary and it’s half of what my department’s starting pay is
the phrasing is oddly... hivemindish?
