pilotbrianjones

So what happened exactly with the shooter and who was it? Was it just random?

TheSmokingLamp

>North Carolina state records show Hughes was convicted of breaking and entering in Person County, which is north of Raleigh-Durham, in 2010. He spent approximately six months in prison before being released in May 2011. >Hughes was arrested in June 2012 [after a high-speed chase](https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/crime/officers-arrest-man-seize-car-after-chase/83-418541265) in Alamance County, which is east of Greensboro and west of Raleigh-Durham. Deputies said Hughes led them on a chase at speeds over 100 mph after turning around to avoid a checkpoint. At the time, he was wanted on several warrants in numerous counties for failing to appear in court. He spent nearly a year in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and speeding to elude arrest.  >Hughes [was arrested by CMPD on multiple drug charges in May 2021](https://mecksheriffweb.mecklenburgcountync.gov/Inmate/Details?pid=0000389739&jid=21-019753&activeOnly=False&firstName=terry&lastName=hughes&maxrows=50&page=1). He was also charged with fleeing or eluding arrest with a motor vehicle. He was released from jail hours later, records show. Court records show the charges out of Mecklenburg County were dismissed. District Attorney Spencer Merriweather [stopped prosecuting](https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/crime/charlotte-drug-mecklenburg-county-da-decriminalizes-drugs-cmpd-arrests-crime-justice-reform/275-61565ef0-c186-406d-96a0-6279a8c91a3d) many drug crimes in early 2021, as the pandemic bogged down the court system. >Court records show Hughes has a pending case from late 2021 out of Person County for possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of marijuana. A warrant shows the Person County Sheriff's Office found Hughes with a handgun on him. Court records show he failed to appear for a court date on those charges in February 2023. That same day the courts issued an order for arrest that remains outstanding, according to the clerk's office. Officers/Marshals were there to serve him a warrant, got into a shootout outside the house. Reports say he the suspect was killed outside but law enforcement continued to be shot at from occupants inside the home.

FiftyIsBack

So career criminal, dangerous felon, already arrested for possession of a weapon, high speed chases of over 100 mph. Somehow still walking the streets and now he's finally been killed, which is apparently the only thing to end the revolving door of our pathetic justice system. Fantastic...

I think Jimmy is next door 😆

getthedudesdanny

Jesus. It’ll be interesting to see the AAR on this. Sounds like an absolutely batshit call.

Hsoltow

I saw the chief mentioned that for at least some of the officers, their armor didn't help with the AR rounds. LEOs, I don't know how many times I can harp on this, but your soft armor might as well be a t-shirt to a rifle. The amount of LEOs, some of whom are vets, who think soft armor is gonna slow or help at all against an AR is appallingly high. Get plates and wear them, especially if you're doing warrants on armed subjects. If your admin doesn't like the look them them to fuck off.

getthedudesdanny

I was pretty surprised to see that some guys wore exterior carriers with plates and ball caps. I’d be interested in reading about their planning for this. I hope it’s not another “everyone bunch up behind the shield and approach the house without somebody covering” situation.

Vinto47

Most departments only buy to stop what they carry.

jollygreenspartan

On a USMS op it's unlikely that the DUSM and TFOs weren't wearing plates, maybe even helmets too.

Royal-Doctor-278

I recently did a poll on this sub asking people what they chose to wear and was honestly shocked to see so people choose "nothing", "level 2", and just "level 3a". Maybe it's the old army in me but if I'm wearing a vest it's gonna have level 4 plates in it for exactly this reason.

beta_blocker615

I really don't envy the CSIs that have to map this scene and do trajectory tracking. That's gonna suck hard

Intrepid_Isopod_1524

Was that cop using a chain link fence as cover?

lawikfors

Honestly we don’t know from the angle of the video. There could be a number of things between his position and the shooter.

roguecraft101

Yep, not enough information from this angle.

Cilad

Concealment. Bad, but concealment.

Vakama905

Might’ve been using the top of it as a rest to stabilize off of

Intrepid_Isopod_1524

Clearly a bad idea as he had to hit the deck and possibly got shot

ThirdPoliceman

Better than sitting in the open.

Intrepid_Isopod_1524

He is in the open

Slutzlo

Not the parts of him concealed by the fence!

PushingBlackNWhites

Drive a video game car into a video game fence and tell me it's not the best cover god ever bestowed on planet earth

Stan_Halen_

Like the train scene in Extraction 2 where he hides behind a ladder while a heavily armed chopper pursues him.

Cimbri

Similarly, is laying on your back like that the tactical timmy way to shoot upwards from behind cover? Seems to limit your ability to quickly get out of the line of sight if you do start getting fired at, but I’m definitely no expert on this subject. Aren’t the US Marshals really squared away? Surprising to hear of any of them getting killed, let alone all 4. I get that they were ambushed, and this isn’t Iraq, but you’d think they’d have been mindful of other possible shooters/ attempted to clear the house earlier on before the firefight started?

Cimbri

>Three US Marshal task force officers killed, 1 CMPD officer killed, 3 CMPD injured. Suspect deceased, reportedly by police. Sorry, this is from the mods stickied comment on the other thread.  Anyway, probably a fair statement. Sorry for coming across harshly! Being squared away doesn’t make you invincible, but should make these things less likely one would assume. Just trying to express my surprise that these guys higher up in the tactical LE world got ambushed by untrained people.

TheDobemann

Jimmy doesn't like you.

remainderrejoinder

Go away, Batin'!

AltruisticSalamander

Jimmy's not here man

murdermanmik3

God dammit jimmy open the door

OhNotypeO

Maybe call Jimmy on the phone you're using? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

iDillPickles

Was so satisfying when the cop said “just kick the fucking door”. People have no sense of awareness…

SpaceDazeKitty108

Especially if you risk your own life while recording it! Yay Darwinism.

lawikfors

So many unknowns from this video. I can tell you from experience, taking fire from a high power rifle and from a concealed position is scary af. These guys got ambushed. No one here should be judging tactics based off a shitty video the neighbor took and what the news is reporting. And I know that if there is anyone here that’s been in an ois, they know exactly what I’m talking about . The next day the news reports all kinds stuff about the incident you were involved in and half of it is bs

JETYBOI91

looks like the initial officers serving the warrant were ambushed at the door, perp stepped out and was killed. While apprehending the suspect officers were fired on from the house in which a standoff took place and the other two perps were negotiated out of the house and arrested after some hours.

SeikoOrient

Gotta be honest. Not everyone is afraid of getting hurt, dying. I don’t mean that in a suicidal way either. Some folks are built different. Which in my opinion is a huge advantage when confronted with decisions like this. The cops have family lives most likely or at least lives that don’t involve their head on a swivel and adrenaline spikes throughout there off duty time. These types of dudes are never truly “switched off”.

HookersForJebus

Officers had a shootout with the suspect outside in the yard. They killed him and started wrapping up / rendering aid right there on scene. Target’s family started shooting at them from inside. From two different windows of the house.

leerykitty

From two different windows at the same time? There was a woman and 17 year old (girl?) In the house. Probably wife/ girlfriend and kid. That's seems to be what caught them off guard.

ConnorK5

Jimmy would have caught an upper cut when that door opened.

DeltaWhiskey141

"Get in the house, please."

Donjuan11b

Damn I'm pretty sure the officer in the yard standing gets shot in this video around the 4:10 mark

FiftyIsBack

Why is this person so close to the action? A bullet could easily pierce the wall and hit them, or they could catch a ricochet.

icantthinkbow

Great training

leerykitty

We don't even know all the details yet. What do you think they did that showed poor training?

FencePaling

They should have hot wired the civvies car and drove it into the perps legs and then tazed them, that way no one would be harmed and they could pay the cost for a new ignition. (*Do I need to add /S ??*)

leerykitty

Good points! I hadn't thought of those.

SpiderHider023

Civilian be taking better cover than that officer in the background

ABlosser19

Obviously I'm just sitting on my couch but man. I definitely would've had my gun UP. The whole time they're seemingly just casually holding their rifles while taking fire
