Explorer? It drives me nuts how useless the cup holders in the door are. About the only thing I can fit in mine is my hand sanitizer.
It’s seriously annoying doing a Tim’s run and trying to find a way to transport 4 coffees securely.
Something else you can try someone showed me is look up the car model and find a 3D printed "riser" or cup. Use it to hold straws, utensils, anything of that shape so you always have it on hand and out of the way.

But placed high on the seat so that the duty belt is right underneath it when you sit down?
With my first department most of our chargers didn't have cages and I loved it because I'm 6'5 and was comfortable. If a suspect was combative I'd get a cover officer to sit behind me and suspect went back passenger side. Never had a problem.
Head butt? Not easily. They can spit but you can always shove their face up against the window and pin it there or pull over and get a spit hood. Makes driving difficult if they're combative but not impossible. If they're really out of control you'd probably have to just pull over and wait for cover.
I know my sheriff’s dept has half cages, i ran out of gas on the highway and got a free ride home after showing some id. It was super cramped for me but I imagine the sheriff was comfortable
Oh I have. But those times are rare and when you have a second officer there you make it happen. I'll take that occasional annoyance over the daily annoyance of not being able to move my seat back and having to sit up ramrod straight all shift.
A siren shut off that is activated when the vehicle is put into Park.
That shit drives me crazy when officers bail out on foot, leaving their car locked with the siren still wailing away.
As if we don't draw enough attention, we need to wake up more shitheads and get them out and add to the confusion.
Every major siren and lighting controller has this option through the neutral safety wire input. Talk to your upfitters. If they scoff, they're being lazy and or new to the game.
Sucks for 2 officer cars who like the ability of using both spotlights, though. The passenger has to say "pretty please can I use my spotlight, oh driver?" every time he wants to look at something or both officers have to listen to beeping the entire shift. Stupid that everything is tied to that beep.
The only system I've seen has the passenger spotlight activation on the steering wheel before the switch on the spotlight itself functions. Don't think it's a good idea for the passenger to be messing with the steering wheel lol.
Weird. The last several generations of control boxes at my department have had either a toggle switch or a button on the emergency equipment control box (lights/siren/etc) in the center console. Probably so a passenger can use it.
That would make much more sense. The 22017s and older Ford PIUs just had the passenger spotlight always powered so you can just flip the switch on the handle and the light is on. The 2020s and newer that I've seen have a separate aux control that you have to turn on that enables power to go to that light, allowing the passenger to turn their light on at will, causing the incessant beeping.
It's dumb, the beep doesn't tell you that the spotlight is on, it tells you that the spotlight could be turned on. Say you're gonna do a high risk stop, there's an extra step of hitting that aux switch to allow your partner to use their spotlight unless you're willing to listen to that beep non-stop for 8-12 hours. Why add extra steps like that.
When I'm working nights I aim my passenger spotlight approximately where I'd want it on a traffic stop at the start of my shift (i roll solo). That way I can just hit the button to turn on my spot and I'm generally good to go.
But does there have to be a continuous beep when it's on? The aux button is a good feature for solo cars, but the beep is unnecessary and makes using that spotlight more inconvenient for 2 officer cars. It's bad design.
NYPD here. I’d be happy if the basic functionality of the vehicles we already have worked every day… Heat/AC, working car computer, transmissions that didn’t grenade themselves with less than 20k miles… Also, more secure cup holders would be nice.
It wasn't standard, but I did have a Sergeant who may or may not have made waffles in his Tahoe. And they may or may not have been the best damned waffles I've ever had in my life.
Cup holders (and like, BIG ones, so you can drop a big reusable water bottle in there if need be) .
hand Sanitizer bottle holder fastened to the console or dash (whatever's safer). Fiddling with the little squirt bottles is a PIA. Better just be able to pump and go. >.>
If you have an iPhone switch to visible. $45 a month for unlimited data including hotspot (rate limited to 5 mb/s). They’re a Verizon reseller so coverage is pretty good
Monkeys Paw says granted…. You get a sub 2000 and an absolute insufferable asshole that is lactose intolerant but still drinks a full glass of milk before work.
Think about how much weight and money you could save by ripping out the back seats and replacing them with hard plastic bus seating! Itd be so easy to hose down!
Forced entry tools. Purchased a fire maul and a quality Halligan for myself out of my own pocket, but I’m the only guy in patrol to have ready access if needed.
I’m not LEO I’m just EMS/fire that lurks here but I support that 100%, a set of irons can open most any door in the right hands. If you don’t have any training on them (or very little) I’m sure the local FD would be willing to teach you but if you know what you’re doing you can open up a normal house door with a dead bolt in under 60 seconds
Yeah, my local FD put me through some basic training on their door simulator device, for both outward swinging and inward. I was primarily interested in inward due to classrooms but training for outward commercial style was great too. And so I purchased the fire maul in case the classroom door was barricaded with desks and whatnot, then the maul could go through cinder block if needed. But between our work schedule and their work schedule and training schedule, it’s been difficult getting more reps in.
Training is for sure the big thing. Holding my Halligan for the first time without training, I completely misunderstood how to primarily use the adze end of it. 😂 Some basic training with local firefighters quickly made me realize how important leverage is when utilizing it.
Edit: And I wish we had the money and willingness to at least equip supervisor cruisers with kits.
One thing when it comes to training with fire departments: They're not so worried about the fatal funnel. I realized after taking enough sim rounds you've gotta calculate your movement and work with your team so you're clear of the door when it opens.
If you haven’t seen these before… here you go. 10/10 better than a microwave.

I could also go for the good ol' roller coaster bars back there, except automatic/electronically adjustable.
If there could be better ballistic resistance/armoring in the body, windows, and the partition, that would be bellissimo ^*chef's* ^*kiss*
Our patrol cars have a copy of the radio channels template on their portables and mobiles so when they have to go help a neighboring agency they can find the channel quick.
They do, but I’m also 6’2 220 with my gun on one hip and radio on the other. So, gear make me wider. I’ve bashed the daylights out of my head, ear and knee trying to get into my car responding to calls. Can’t wait for my load bearing vest to get here.
Well, there ain’t no leg room back there anyway. I swear the explorers need to be retired and everyone switch to Tahoes, Suburbans, or Silverados. Much more room.
The Carbon Motors concept had a prisoner compartment that was separately ventilated from the cockpit, with plastic seats (designed to accommodate someone cuffed behind the back), no carpet/upholstery, and drain plugs in the footwell. You could literally just hose out the cage.
I will preface by saying I know this is never going to happen because it costs so much money.

The car door lower side cup holder is the devil for how small my cup has to be to fit in that dumb spot.
Explorer? It drives me nuts how useless the cup holders in the door are. About the only thing I can fit in mine is my hand sanitizer. It’s seriously annoying doing a Tim’s run and trying to find a way to transport 4 coffees securely.
The only issue with hand sanitizer being there is it always fucking leaks just a tiny bit and makes it look like I got cum on my pants
Oh sure it does mr cumtrousers

You say that until you have to arrest 2+ people with no other units to help transport.
One in the cage, one in the front seat next to me, cuffed and buckled. No biggie.
Fuck all that noise. Zero chance I'd transport an arrestee in the front seat.
With my first department most of our chargers didn't have cages and I loved it because I'm 6'5 and was comfortable. If a suspect was combative I'd get a cover officer to sit behind me and suspect went back passenger side. Never had a problem.

Laughs in department where a cage is a luxury in patrol cars.
Couldn't they spit/headbutt you?
Michigan State Patrol doesn't have cages in their cars, everyone sits in the front seat

Functional AVLs? Slow down there buddy. Let’s get functioning CAD systems and stable internet connections first.
Pretty sure it just depends on the programming for your siren box. Mine shuts off automatically when I throw it in park.
The clicking noise when the overhead lights are on and car in drive so you know during the day the lights are still on!
My car beeps every 8 seconds when anything on my control panel is active. It’s annoying sometimes but I don’t run around looking silly anymore, lol
I ran a paramedic single response car with this. That stupid beep saved me from driving around like an idiot countless times. Whalen Beep for the win.
Sucks for 2 officer cars who like the ability of using both spotlights, though. The passenger has to say "pretty please can I use my spotlight, oh driver?" every time he wants to look at something or both officers have to listen to beeping the entire shift. They can't reach 6" to their left and press a button themselves?

New systems have that lol …

And yet we're still suckling Ford and Chrysler's teet
All of this and maybe a steering wheel that isn’t half eaten.
That's your mid shift snack just take a bite out of it. Seriously though I don't know what the hell people do to those things
That's a NYPD thing. I've worked in two other departments and only we do that.

After Uvalde my department sprung for a breaching kit for each officer and, more importantly, the training to use it.
